TESA is a PLACEBO. Use UMH... you wont see ANY difference and will get a nice speed boost.
@rapscallion: bitrate is not limited by the resolution. x264 can produce files bigger than the original as well as xvid or any other encoders. also, that doesnt mean it can "improve" the source... it cant be done. every time you re-encode you WILL loose some quality (unless you're re-encoding with a lossless method).

I'm not using tesa. Can the avs content affect the amount of memory used by the x264 process?

So, if the resulting bitrate is higher than the source, what are those "extra" bits doing, other than increasing the file size ?

Your source is the decompressed output of your file, If you save that output in raw and lossless format you will end with a HUGE file. Lossy compression will produce a filesize between 0 and the size of your raw output. So if you set an higher bitrate than the compressed source, you will end with a file larger than this source.
I dont know what happens if you set a bitrate higher than the raw source.

I finally solve my problem with the update.
I delete these keys :

I don't know how this file was a part of the registry. It was just unzipped from an archive (http://streamy.sourceforge.net/), no installer.

The latest x264 update is extracted with the following file name:
x264.
Therefore it doesn't replace the existing version.

bah! i really need to replace the keyboard.
however it's extracted as x264..exe ....

Recently I noticed that the Cyberlink H.264 decoder does not properly report 1080 lines for AVC encoded video so I've been trying different decoders. CoreAVC works very well but it seems to cause MeGUI's interface to stop responding if you click anywhere on the encoding monitor window. x264.exe still continues to run but you can no longer tell the statistics of the conversion. Any ideas?

Taddeusz - why are you using DirectShowSource for H.264 instead of DGAVCIndex/DGAVCDecNV?

The new x264 (with a working filename) have corrected my memory blow problem. Now for the same work the max mem used is around 600M (1500M and more before, with x264 crashes)

I'm doing a pre-rendering pass in MeGUI with some pretty heavy filtering and mencoder is close to but never exceeds 50% CPU. Is mencoder's HuffYUV encoding multithreaded? If so, I guess it's time for me to move to Avisynth-MT...
Sharktooth

if you're doing heavy filtering, then avisynth is your limiting factor.

Edit: System idle time is 40-50% and mencoder is about the same. I'm beginning to think Avisynth isn't the hang-up in this particular case.

Also, on a dual-core system, "50%" is one core.

get FLV splitter from here: http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=170561&filename=mpchc_x86_v1.2.908.0_FLVSplitter.zip&a=75719497
ensure FFDShow can decode the streams by playing the .flv file in your favourite DirectShow media player, if it does, then use megui's avseditor to create a script using directshowsource() to open the file. load it and go on encoding.

im sorry but we cant fix other softwares (expecially if they're not opensource softwares).
if "streamy" compromises your internet connectivity, we can do nothing to fix it. just contact that software developers and ask why their software is messing with your internet connection.

MeGUI crashed on me while I was doing something stupid. x264 is still running, according to the process monitor. If I leave it alone, it'll still finish encoding the file, right?

Since the last update the x264 profiles contain "--fullrange on" by default. I thought this option should only be activated if the input uses the range 0-255, which isn't the case for DVD and Blu-Ray sources.
If I'm correct then why is it enabled by default and why isn't there a way to deactivate it?

It should, as Megui's front end capability sets up the command line parameters for the encode, and when started, 264 takes over and goes on from there until done.
In any event, you'll find out eventually :)

Are you sure about "--fullrange on" flag? I don't see it but I encoded some video and noticed that it have wrong levels when video played using CoreAVC (CoreAVC thinks input have PC levels) and right levels with MPC-HC with or without DXVA(I guess MPC-HC do not respect fullrange flag). So then it makes sence to me...
EDIT: encoding to h264 with ffmpeg gives me right levels with CoreAVC so probably fullrange flag is somewhere there in MeGui.

OMG, when nurbs said "profiles" i looked directly into xml files. There is no such flag in them but now I see it in MeGui commandline...

Thanks, rapscallion. New question for devs and others: when I drag a .dgm file into the AVS Script Creator, I get an error that tells me that there is no function called "MPGSource". I assume this is because the current syntax for DGMPGDecNV is DGSource() rather than MPGSource(). Is this intended behavior and I'm just screwing up somewhere, or is this a bug?
Sharktooth
1st June 2009, 03:06
i think ALL DVDs and Blu-rays have 0-255 range. however i'll make it an option.
EDIT: done.
@inspector.gadget: megui defaults to DGMpegDec syntax since it's free and it's included with megui updates, however does DGMpegDec accepts DGSource as well? In that case, ill just swap MPGSource with DGSource, otherwise additional checks are needed.

it's because the code isn't updated yet to support the new version...

Sharktooth: DGSource() doesn't work with a regular d2v file, as far as I can test, so you may need to separate the function. I don't know anything about programming, but since opening a .dgm file in the AVS Script Creator already starts the CUVID server, the "hook" may already be there.
Related issue: When encoding using any of the NV tools and the CUVID server running, opening another NV (dgm, dgv, dga) file in the AVS Script Creator accesses the running CUVID server and crashes MeGUI but apparently doesn't interfere with x264 or the instance of Avisynth it uses (and has only brought down the CUVID server one of two time I've done the same stupid thing ). I realize it's not MeGUI's fault, but if you developers get a chance, maybe you could figure out a way to check for a running instance of the server and disallow any further automatic access through the AVS Script Creator to keep idiots like me from constantly messing themselves up. Many thanks for an excellent program.

Is there a simple way to drop 1 or 2 nonindex frames from a h264 video stream using MeGUI? I want to join 2 MKVs together. Unfortunately, the keyframe is two frames before the scene change that I want to make the join. I need a way to drop those 2 frames from the video, preferably without doing any reencoding. Due to various reasons, this would be impractical. Is there a way to reindex the video stream without reencoding?
I have Mkvmerge as a muxer, it can only cut on keyframes. If there's another muxer that doesn't have this limitation and can let me cut on the frame I want, please let me know.

Then, how can I get the [codec private] information from the video container and put it into MeGUI? If I can do that, I only need to reencode one video once, instead of lots of videos.

I just had some partial success. I've been able to tweak my MeGUI settings to the point where I can reencode the video and make it join with the other video properly. This time, I'm only one frame off from where I want to be. So close yet so far!
I've picked up DGAVCIndex and got it read the h264 stream demuxed from the MKV, but I have no idea how to get it to specify a keyframe where I want it, or something like that.
I would be most grateful for any assistance in this regard.

If you are re-encoding the video, just use Trim() in the avisynth script to cut it where you want
Next time, just edit everything in the script before encoding
If you want to place specific keyframes when encoding, use a qpfile (do a search there are several threads)

I'm using Win7 so maybe this is not really a bug in MeGui but please check this out. In x264 configuration dialog, when we disable CABAC option - Trellis and Psy-Trellis Strength becames grayed out. But when we enable CABAC again, only Trellis becames normal, but Psy-Trellis Strength remains grayed out and there is no way to enable it.
Sharktooth
7th June 2009, 01:42
well, i doubt it could be due to windows 7... ill check it out but please report bugs to the megui project bugtracker on sourceforge.
edit: it's not a bug. when you disable cabac trellis is automatically set to 0 and disabled. to re-enable psy-trellis you should set trellis at least to 1 (and obviously re-enable cabac first).
