Before the change in MeGUI the calculation was based upon a 6% general overhead calculation. This has been replaced with a more exact calculation. But sadly it is only more accurate for some audio tracks (e.g. high bitrate AC3). As soon as the following discussion comes to an end I will replace the current calculation with this one:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=158828

Is there a way for me to use the calculator from 0.3.5.0 in 1911? Is there any files that I can copy from the old into the new to revert it back?

My method is exactly as in my tutorial (http://www.bubblevision.com/underwater-video/Vegas-YouTube-Vimeo.htm). I am mapping video in Vegas to RGB 16,16,16 - 235,235,235 because the browser's Flash Player will do a [16-235] to [0,255] conversion when it plays videos from YouTube, Vimeo, JWPlayer etc.. I want to maintain the original levels without clipping. I frameserve to AviSynth in RGB24. In the AviSynth script I use the line ConvertToYV12(matrix="PC.709") to maintain the levels and allow the filters to work. But MeGUI's preview is expanding that out to full range 0-255. It's not a problem really because the mp4 has the correct levels, but I'm wondering why it's happening.

It's because the megui preview is using a Rec601 matrix for the preview. This is a normal industry standard for SD and what flash uses, including youtube (actually youtube uses Rec709 to convert YV12 material to RGB for display). Remember, you 're not looking at YV12 directly , you 're looking at the RGB converted representation of it.

If you want to view Y'CbCr data with a full range matrix use ConvertToRGB(matrix="Pc.709") temporarily, but comment it out when you do the actual encoding.

The reason the export mp4 has the correct levels is because Y'CbCr is passed through untouched. Input levels = Output levels

If you want to recover "superbrights" and "superdarks" in your original clip, you actually don't want to use studio RGB. Studio RGB means Y' 16-235 gets mapped to RGB 16,16,16 - 235,235,235. This means you've lost Y' <16, Y' >235. You actually want to do a full range conversion , ie. Y' 0-255 => RGB 0,0,0 - 255,255,255.

* as an aside you can actually use full range Y'CbCr and decode using full range if you use your own hosting. This means Y' 0-255 is decoded to RGB 0,0,0 - 255,255,255. This means you get less banding along gradients. Flash supports full range flag by x264.

It's because the megui preview is using a Rec601 matrix for the preview.

That explains it. Thanks!

The rest of my workflow is all about retaining superwhites and superblacks. I'm "squeezing" the levels range in Vegas Pro because the browser's Flash Player will "stretch" the levels of the video that YouTube deliver. If the uploaded levels aren't squeezed, the superwhites and superblacks get clipped when viewed on YouTube/Vimeo etc..

One more thing, poisondeathray...

actually youtube uses Rec709 to convert YV12 material to RGB for display

Do you know if it does this for video <1280 px wide, rather than Rec601?

I have found the BR calculator tool pretty accurate for bd-5/9 and bd-25 (~95% in Imgburn), up until a few builds ago.

In fact I would add 200-300 kbps to the br resulting ~98%.(= to ~4% overhead)

Now the br actual calculated br is too high and oversizes for all 3, as mentioned by Zathor.

I find that if I add 5min to the time of the movie (ie 1h 58m, enter 2h 03m) or deduct 4%, it's back on course ~98%.
This is fine until the new build/calculator.

I tested it a few months ago, and it was independent of resolution . Even the SD vids got Rec709 treatment. It may have changed

I install two days ago the lastests upgrade for Megui, and since , when a launch a X264 encode, it crashes.
the most weird that it crashes when a move a Window from my Desktop ! If I don't do this , it works fine !

I Have a X64 Windows 7 , a Q9550 Quad Core and 4 Gb Ram

Anyone as an idea ?

Hi

Can someone tell me why encoding high res (1080(i)) video is very low FPS for me? But that's not my main concern actually. It's the fact that it only is using up about 30% of my CPU usage when encoding!

My encoding setting is as follows:

Field deinterlace
No crop
Resize ~ 720x400 res
Lanczos4 sharp resize filter
NO change of video FPS (29.97 fps)

x264: DXVA hi def video profile, target filesize @ medium/fast setting, 1300 kbps

I only get about 26 to 28 fps when I use anywhere from medium-fast-faster-very fast profiles. However, if I encode two 1080i videos simultaneously, they both are going about 26 fps, and my cpu usage is still at about 70%.

Is there a speed setting or something else i'm missing here? I want the video encoding to take full advantage of my cpu usage but it's not doing so.

For some reason, MeGUI isn't liking the qp file I'm trying to feed it to force I frames for Blu-ray chapters.

The error I'm recieving is:

--[Error] An error occurred: x264 [error]: can't parse qpfile for frame 0

My QP file is saved as a text file and looks like this:

240 K -1
480 K -1
720 K -1
960 K -1
1200 K -1
1440 K -1
1680 K -1

I've never used QP Files before, so I'm assuming I'm doing something stupid.

Thanks

Hmm, it's still not working. I've uploaded the file here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/1x59ki

Sorry for being dumb, is there supposed to be a header or is it just a pure text file as described above?

Hmm, and this file DOES work: http://www.sendspace.com/file/7m8h9y

you should look at the fault module. the second crash is not a good sign (kernelbase.dll) ...
fft3dGPU could be the culprit.

Often you do not only have to install something, but also to configure it.

Check e.g. ffdshow's VFW Configuration (Decoder) if "Raw Video" conversion is enabled, at least for planar YUV.

MeGUI seems to be behaving itself at the minute, thanks for the replies Sharktooth!

another problem if anyone can help please?
most of the time when using Lame CBR over128KBps in MeGUI
i still get only Mp3 128KBps.
what i mean is i can set it to 160Kbs but i find the output is 128Kbps

96, 112, 128 all work fine , go over 128Kbps and it doesnt work , it always outputs at 128Kbps

VBR, ABR , any configuration works a treat, but constant over 128Kbps will only output at 128Kbps

can anyone explain this?

When creating an AviSynth script using the 'AviSynth script creator', I always make the following steps:
* hit 'auto crop'
* check 'resize' and 'suggest resolution (mod16)'
* hit 'analyse' on the 'filters' tab

Can these steps be automated, i.e. that they are automatically performed when a .d2v is loaded?

My current workflow is to use the 'File indexer' to create a d2v, which is automatically loaded in the avisynth script creator. It would be nice if especially the analysis would start immediately, since it takes some time before it's done. That way I do not need to monitor the file indexer to see when it's ready in order to push those buttons, I could rather leave it and check the settings when it's done.

Please try the One-Click tool. It can do everything you require automatically. You only need to setup the tasks once, save it as a profile and afterwards need only to select the input file (vob?) and click on "go".

I have a question. I am encoding a DVD video in MeGui to AVC with x264. The original video is 720x480 16:9 NTSC and I want to keep the original resolution of 720x480.

Question is: what is the best avs script option (qualitywise) from the 2 below?

Script 1 has no filters/resizers involved (except colour correction) so it seems to be the best option, but I may be wrong. Is this a good idea? Am I missing something?

Script 2 is created using "Clever (TM) Anamorphic Encoding" in MeGui. It resizes the encoded video to the same size of the original movie (720x480). That does not make much sense to me since I always heard that resizing degrades quality.
In this case I am not sure and I do not know why MeGui is trying to resize to the same original size (?????). Does this resize to the same size degrade quality further in comparison to Script 1? Should I use this instead of Script 1?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

the most weird that it crashes when a move a Window from my Desktop !
,

I have been having the same problem. Any attempt to move or minimise any of the windows (main or worker) and everything goes white and freezes. Sometimes it recovers but usually not and if it does the encodes will usually error some hours later.

I recently had another bout of self-deleting profiles, everything vanished except the scratchpads.

I really like MeGUI but it can be flaky.

@ beto:

AviSynth will recognise that there is no change in the clip dimensions, and will do no resizing, no interpolation.

Using the C.A.E. may be necessary though, to have MeGUI signal the anamorphic aspect ration in the final container correctly.

Wow, long thread.
Ok I ran a search and read heaps of pages, but couldn't find my issue.

I've been using megui's one click encoder to convert my dvds to mkv.
However with the current dvd i'm trying to convert i'm getting a weird audio sync issue.
When i play back the mkv the audio is about 500ms behind the video.
I've tried multiple audio settings and profiles and even tried preserving the original audio, but every time the audio is out of sync.

Something is wrong with the audio encoding for AAC. I haven't changed anything, but since the last update, I cannot encode audio without getting this error....

Now, if I take the audio file (AC3, or any audio file for that matter) and place it in Nero's Audio Encoder using Nero 9, it encodes just fine. So, I'm guessing it has to be something with MeGui.

It's the 1.5.4.0 version of the Nero AAC encoder. "The pipe has been ended" error only happens with some audio streams (and there's no rhyme or reason to it) and usually only happens with 5.1 encodes, but it's always fixed by reverting to 1.3.3.0.

Maybe you could post a sample of your .ac3?

I was wondering if there was a way to add multiple files at once or add a folder?

I have over 1000 jobs to convert, and adding a folder instead of each file individually would be faster. Not sure whether MeGUI has this option or not.

I am currently using the One Click Encoder to do the jobs.

With other programs I am able to do this, but due to what I'm trying to do, I can only use MeGUI for this because I'm using scripts alongside the files I'm converting.

AiDz0r, as per forum rules there is no best. MeGUI as well as other GUIs are a matter of personal taste. Use what you like more. However, MeGUI supports almost all x264 commandline options, so no need to specify extra commandline options. I'd start playing with presets and tunings.

I sometimes forget about the rules, im sorry about that, ill try not to say it again, however, you are correct, to begin with playing around with the presets and tuning, though, I've heard and remember from years ago, that there was a commandline or preset, specifically for Video-games, Anime, and CG as separate for each. I exactly remember that there were commandlines only if you render CG or VideoGames and Anime. I actually want to know if anyone would able to share and help me out, because I know the GUI is not enough for advance tuning, I wouldn't care less about the tuning but things change once you join organizations and put extra effort in movie making in Video Games.

I also remember that there's a website, full of x264 encoding commandline and examples, I just can't find it anymore, and one last thing. If suggested to encode for CG and Video games which one would show fine (sharp), in H264 on a Mp4 container, X264 on a Mp4 container, or XViD on avi container, because I remember something like fBlock or something not too sure, that appears when fast motions occurs and the video quality just lowers really bad, I need to know as much, because I forgot it all. I know its my duty to learn but I would like a guidance and path for me lead and go along with, after that I would do the rest, If i didn't need help I wouldn't be here in the first place, I need to be fast as I could. Thank you.

*Edit*: oh and forgot to mention, where exactly can I get the latest X264 encoding (or CLI) not too sure, sorry for the lack of knowledge, I'll get better asap

Regards,

-Sly

H264 on a Mp4 container, X264 on a Mp4 container, or XViD

Slightly off-topic, but there are no such things as H264 or X264 -
there is H.264 (video compression standard) and then there is x264 ,
which is one of many implementations of an encoder that
encode videos into an H.264 compatible format.

in Megui directory /tools/x264/, run one of
x264 --(help|longhelp|fullhelp) in a console.

The different tunings for x264 are available in MeGui in
x264 encoder config / main / tunings (top right) , and
any options not found in the GUI can be entered in the Misc tab
