Hello
I'm using 2674 and I've noticed something it's doing that it didn't do before. When I add a .vob file to encode MeGUI is creating a complete copy of all the .vob files from a DVD before it begins making the .dgi file from DGindexNV. It never did this before it would just "link" (?) to the files and immediately begin making the .dgi file, MUCH faster and my preference. I switched to my stable version 2624 and it works the way I'm used to by creating the .dgi right away. Did I inadvertently change something in the settings dialogue?...is there anyway to change it back to the way I'm familiar with?...I have other programs that do what MeGUI does, some quite costly, but MeGUI is my favorite program by far. Any advice to resolve this minor issue would be appreciated. I'm thinking one of the updates installed recently might have made the change?...that's when I noticed it in any event.
Thank You in advance

You say you used to let MeGUI convert directly from the optical disc? ... Bad decision, that may wear down your drive faster because it has to read out your disc several times, which is also slower than reading it once to your harddisk and then process it from there several times. Furthermore, it will only work straightforward if you have an unprotected media with only one main movie PGC; but in general, commercial DVDs have to be decrypted as well as reduced to one single aspect of the whole production (most conversion target formats do not support alternative scene selections or video angles). Not extracting the main movie PGC may also lead to asynchronous audio if one of the tools in the chain misinterprets prepended nag trailers.

I believe the reason for the changed behaviour is that MeGUI now supports better the extraction of one single main movie, but requires the extraction now.

Thanks so much for your quick response. Actually my workflo is to rip a disk to my hard drive then work from that, it eliminates the decryption and of course MeGUI will work faster reading from an HD than an optical disk, which seems to be what you are suggesting I think? You make an interesting point when you refer to asynchronous audio. I've had problems, on occasion, in the past with the audio and video being out of sync when I encoded .vob from a rip to my hard drive. This seldom happened but when it did I found that ripping the movie to my hard drive with MakeMKV then using that file in MeGUI eliminated the out of sync audio and video.

So what you seem to be saying is the MeGUI has changed the way it works, it now REQUIRES the extraction of the .vob files to the working directory. That's to bad as it adds quite a bit of EXTRA TIME to the process. Would you happen to know if there is a way to turn this feature off so that it works the way it did in past versions? As I say I always use the beta version and when this issue popped I suspected it was a change in the beta that caused this "problem" so to be sure I pulled out the "stable" version and it works the way I prefer, the way I'm used to.

IF you have input to the good people that have developed MeGUI perhaps you could request they make this feature of writing the .vob files to the HD and option that can be turned on or off? Since I rip DVD's to my HD to start with creating another complete set of them with MeGUI just seems time consuming not to mention taking up disk space, temporarily, for no useful purpose.

Thanks again in advance for your feedback

Well, I must admit, I only saw recent changes in the handling of DVDs, including some support for multi-angle, so I assumed that MeGUI would require more preparation.

You say you already rip your DVD to harddisk; it will depend on the specific method, though, if the result is suitable for straightforward processing. Converters will usually need to avoid possible alternative interpretations of the content, "there can be only one" linear movie to be converted. One video angle, one program chain (PGC).

I use AnyDVD to rip the DVD to HD, though I do have other programs available. I've never really had too many problems with MeGUI and those problems that do occur I've managed to overcome. These NEW changes address problems I've seldom encountered in the past so for me these changes just makes the program slower with no advantage, NOT a plus, at least from the perspective of my workflo. I do hope they can manage to offer this "new feature" as an option that can be turned on or off as it does little more than make encoding with MeGUI an even longer process.

Thank you very much for your feedback...you've been very helpful. Best to you...

If a DVD structure is found and the source has mutiple PGCs or angles it has to be preprocessed as otherwise you will have parts in your video which should not be there. If you have only 1 PGC and 1 angle no preprocessing will take place. Also if no IFO files are available (= no DVD structure is found). I am sorry but I will not revert that as it improves the quality.

If you paste the mediainfo output in the MeGUI log I can check if there is maybe an issue.

Hello Zathor
I wrote a longer response but when I clicked post quick reply it disappeared...

In brief, thank you for your response. MeGUI worked perfectly for me so no need to send the MeGUI log. No need to revert as your explanation explains why this new workflo is an improvement. Thanks for providing those details and once again thank your for responding...MeGUI is my GOTO program for correcting my OLD B&W DVD's whose quality of reproduction leave much to be desired...fantastic program!

Trying to get OneClick to work on typical NTSC telecined TV shows. I've developed several OneClick profiles having different AVS script, one of which utilizes the following script to IVTC MKV's containing MPEG-2 files: TFM(slow=2) TDecimate()

When I use this script either in RipBot264 or VirtualDub (d2v files), I get perfectly smooth video. However, MeGUI output is choppy. The MeGUI file is also much smaller and this makes me think that MeGUI is decimating more than it should. As it goes through the processing, I notice that it uses LSmash for indexing (not extracting video from the MKV?) rather than DGIndex, which may be the problem.

Any ideas?

I am about to change the worker handling. Currently you have to create/delete workers manually and the next free job will be automatically assigned independent of the job type. Only exception is that only one audio jab can run in parallel.

In one of the next releases you specify the maximum number of workers (default is 2) and the workers will be automatically created (or deleted). There wont be a way to specify worker names or to create/delete them manually.

Additionally you can specifiy how many jobs of specifc types can be executed in parallel. Job types are Audio, Video, Demuxer, Muxer, Indexer, OneClick. Default rule will be "Audio max 1 Job", "Audio + Demuxer + Muxer + Indexer max 1 Job in total".

That way more than one worker is active (I assume most MeGUI users do not know that > 1 worker is possible) but it wont affect HDD performance as the I/O intensive jobs cannot run in parallel. Audio is also still limited to 1 job, but I do not know if this is still required. It was in the past with AviSynth < 2.6 as multiple audio jobs in parallel caused audio glitches.

This is not finalized yet and any thoughts are welcome.
PS: Temporary Workers can still be created.

However, MeGUI output is choppy. The MeGUI file is also much smaller and this makes me think that MeGUI is decimating more than it should. The avisynth script is processed during encoding outside of MeGUI.

As it goes through the processing, I notice that it uses LSmash for indexing (not extracting video from the MKV?) rather than DGIndex, which may be the problem.?
Which is your input format? Here you name MKV and above d2v so MPG/VOB/... You can select the indexer in the file indexer manually.

Could you please upload your full log file?

Hello Zathor
Just a quick note, both you and LigH made reference to out of sync audio video, that's a problem I've rarely had but there have been a time or two when it did occur. I tried one of the DVD's that gave me an out of sync audio/video when encoding with MeGUI in the past I tried it again using 2674 and the audio/video came out in perfect sync, so the changes you made ARE indeed an improvement. THANKS!

I've been experiencing unexpected behavior in MeGUI since the Oct 30th update to 2652. I'm currently on version 2674. From Zathor's response above to HOB perhaps my issue lies in my ripped files? An example...

Using AnyDVD for disc to ISO file, then DVD Decrypter for ISO to working files. I use the Stream Processing tab to select only one audio track. The result is a Stream Info TXT file, an IFO file, and one very large VOB file.

MeGUI's File Indexer is used to create/load a d2v file. It defaults to DGIndex and in the Audio Demux section of the window it seems to think there are multiple audio tracks available. Leaving the default All Audio Tracks selection and hitting Queue creates 2 jobs: IFO > VOB, and VOB > d2v.

After running the queue and AVS Script Creator I get the expected AC3 (just one), AVS, and D2V files but also a new VOB file that only contains the first 12% of the original VOB file.

I can only assume that the DVDDecryptor has not created a proper IFO file and instead has copied the IFO file and therefore you still have the references to the removed audio tracks included.

Could you give me a few more information about the DVDDecryptor output? file names, file sizes, ...

Hi Zathor. I just checked the DVD Decrypter settings and the "copy IFO file" option was checked (along with all the sub-options). I unchecked it and re-ripped which resulted in just the Stream Info TXT file and one very large VOB file.

I pointed MeGUI's File Indexer to the VOB and it only indicated the single audio track this time. Hitting Queue created only 1 job: VOB > d2v, and AVS Script Creator previews the entire length of the film now.

So is this the correct rip/index method to be using? Have I been doing it wrong for the last 8 years but only now having it break the workflow?

Yes, the usual tools to handle DVD Video in AviSynth based converters require only one Program Chain (and one Video Angle) out of the whole logical DVD Video media structure, and most of them (except the old DGMPGDec) also prefer one continuous file over a set of VOB segments. The original IFO file refers to segmented VOBs in the whole logical media, it will probably not match the extracted PGC (except the DVD contained only one, like in the result of DVD Shrink after authoring a movie-only DVD).

Regarding the Stream Info TXT file that DVD Decrypter creates - should I disable the creation of that too? I see now that it still contains the original list of sub/audio tracks, even though the VOB only has one of each. Since the indexing process went correctly does that mean MeGUI doesn't refer to this file at all?

Zathor
28th November 2016, 18:54
The TXT does not belong to a DVD structure and is therefore ignored. Without IFO file you wont get the audio language information as this is not stored in the VOB. Beside that it is fine to use the VOB only.

disklib
29th November 2016, 06:07
Ah, that explains why the Script Creator never auto-recognized the audio language.

I appreciate both you guys helping me understand what's actually been going on during my years(!) of naive usage. Better late than never I guess.

And as always, thank you Zathor for keeping MeGUI alive and healthy.

My first time using the VOB-only approach and I find VobSubber apparently requires an IFO file to function. If I go back to creating an IFO for that purpose it seems I can't stop File Indexer from loading it. Even if I choose the VOB as the input file, Indexer will load the IFO instead. Is this expected behavior? I can't say I've noticed it before. If so, is the suggested workaround to hide the IFO from File Indexer by renaming or removing it from the working directory before/after extracting the subs?

Hi. I've been working on some old anime I've got sitting around and found some Megui settings that seem to do the job pretty well. Now I'm trying to automate this into a Oneclick profile so I can batch-process, and the one thing I can't seem to get working is the setting found in the Avisynth Script Editor called "source is anime". Is there a good way to carry that setting over to a OneClick profile? I've got my AviSynth profile, Audio Encoder Profile, and Video Encoder Profile all working, but I'm not finding any way to run a OneClick batch with the "source is anime" deinterlacing option, and this results in poorer quality video output.

This is using MeGUI 2624.

May I ask why you are using DVDDecrypter? If you directly process the source it should be easier. Or depending on your workflow / use case you can also use OneClick on your source which will do everything for you.

This is currently sadly not possible. I was not aware that this option is really beeing used. It will be added in a future release (no clue where - maybe in the avisynth profile)

May I ask why you are using DVDDecrypter? If you directly process the source it should be easier. Or depending on your workflow / use case you can also use OneClick on your source which will do everything for you.

My workflow is usually just to encode a single title off of a DVD, then mux it with the original AC3 audio and subs/captions.

DVD Decrypter just seems to be a fast and easy way to identify and extract only the desired data for transcoding. Such as choosing a single audio track rather than having to extract all of them.

If I point File Indexer to the disc/ISO data directly it will extract all the audio files to the working directory (the Select Tracks option is greyed out).

One Click Encoder behaves the same as File Indexer by auto-loading the IFO even though I point it to the VOB. It also seems to expect the subtitles to have already been pre-extracted, so that doesn't help with the "hiding the IFO" workaround I described previously.

I guess the point of my last post was that while I'd like to not use or create the IFO file at all (based on your previous comments), it seems I need it to be able to extract the subs via VobSubber. More importantly, the forced/auto-loading of the IFO in File Indexer was unexpected to me and I thought it best to bring that to your attention.

DVD Decrypter is good but quite old (2005).

Have you tried MakeMkv (http://makemkv.com/) ?
It is updated frequently and
- Functionality to open DVD discs is free and will always stay free.
- All features (including Blu-ray decryption and processing) are free during BETA. (http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1053)

You can obtain a .mkv backup for each title with the desired tracks. After you can recode the MPEG2 video (and audio or subs) using well know decoders (ffms2, L-SMASH, DGindexNV, ...)

hello_hello
30th November 2016, 16:09
Nothing against MakeMKV, but personally I prefer to keep mpeg2 video in a container DGIndex can work with (assuming DGIndexNV isn't an option). I've ripped with MakeMKV on occasion but I feel better remuxing the video as a TS file with TSMuxer, or extracting it as an mpg file first.

The reason for that is both ffms2 and l-smash ignore pulldown flags by default, and in the case of hybrid NTSC video (combinations of 23.976fps and 29.970fps) I'm reasonably sure they'd both treat it as variable frame rate and output the average frame rate, so there's potential for unpleasantness unless you're aware of that. And MeGUI has an option for enabling/disabling "force film" and adjusting the threshold but not when indexing with ffms2 or l-smash.

For ffms2 "rffmode=1" is required to honour pulldown flags and when it's enabled, ffms2 will output a constant frame rate.
For LWLibavVideoSource the option is "repeat=true", but it's ignored when VFR to CFR conversion is enabled by setting a fpsnum value. For a hybrid DVD though, you'd probably either have to set "repeat=true" or "fpsnum=30000, fpsnum=1001" for the expected type of CFR output.

The norm is to output a constant frame rate, and plugins such as TIVTC and Decomb won't be much use for hybrid sources unless ffms2 or l-smash are told by MeGUI to behave like DGIndex, which I'm pretty sure it doesn't do at present.

Thanks for your comments guys.

I just installed and played with MakeMKV a bit. The forum is offline so I didn't get to look up any additional info, but I did try comparing my workflow with MakeMKV to my existing DVD Decrypter one and it's basically an even match for the early steps I've been discussing.

MakeMKV saves me from running VobSubber and hiding the IFO file afterwards (the workaround I described in a previous post), but that savings is offset with having to run an external demuxing utility like MKVcleaver to extract the subs and also the m2v file (to avoid the potential issue hello_hello described). After that it's just the normal MeGUI flow of File Indexer/Script Creator/encode/mux.

I agree DVD Decrypter is long out of development, but since the DVD format is stable I figured it was still OK to use as long as it produced something appropriate for MeGUI to work with. As Zathor clarified earlier, the IFO copy it creates was causing problems during the File Indexer process, but remove that file and the VOB itself seems fine. Based on that it seems simplest to modify my existing flow a bit: create the IFO file (which VobSubber likes) and extract my subs from the VOB first, then delete/rename the IFO file (which File Indexer doesn't like) and then Index the VOB directly. The rest of the workflow has no issues.

I guess I could also explore alternate sub extraction tools, since placating VobSubber's need for an IFO file is what's causing the hiccup in my workflow.

The "primary" tool for me to extract DVD Video subtitles, VSRip (originally by Gabest), would use an IFO file as well, because scanning a VOB for subpictures without the aid of the IFO won't be recommendable.

I am surprised that issues with the IFO generated by DVD Decrypter specifically for the extracted movie PGC are reported. But I may prefer a different kind of "stream processing". Depending on the source plugin for AviSynth, extracting the raw video stream or keeping it in a continuous PGC VOB may be preferable; but before extracting subtitles, they should exist in a VOB file (or VOB segments) together with the video stream and a matching IFO, to aid their extraction as IDX/SUB pair. Stream Processing in DVD Decrypter may export them as raw SUP, but I would fear that some additional information (timing, colormapping) may get lost this way; yet, I never tested that.

For me the workflow with MakeMkv is more easy because I have DGIndexNV and make backups of DVD PAL without fps issues.

For subs I use Subtitle Edit (http://www.nikse.dk/subtitleedit/) than accept mkv like input to OCR with Tesseract and convert to srt or ass.

Or let the SUP, chapters and audio selected in the original mkv, and only replace the recoded video.

Even MakeMkv can decode/recode on the fly some audio tracks (for instance to AAC audio with libfdk)

disklib,
I haven't used DVD Decryptor for ripping much but you might want to try DVD Shrink. If you go into it's preferences there's an option for setting the target output size. It's set to DVD5 by default but if you change it to DVD9 or something larger (ie 50,000MB) it means you won't have to worry about disabling DVD Shrink's compression each time as it'll never try to shrink anything.
I use it to rip and re-author at the same time with AnyDVD running in the background decrypting if required, but it should open the ISO files AnyDVD creates (are you doing it in two steps because you keep an ISO of the full DVD?). Either way, if you select Re-Author mode you'll see a list of titles on the right. It's usually obvious which is the movie title or there's usually one title per episode for episodic DVDs. Drag the required title(s) to the left pane, highlight it or switch to the Compression tab above the right pane, select the audio and subtitle streams you want to keep and use the backup function. You'll end up with a Video_TS.IFO file and another IFO file per set of vob files for each title. To be honest I don't know what OneClick does when you open a folder containing more then one IFO file (if you ripped more than one title) or if you can select which IFO file to open.

I've not done any DVD ripping/encoding since the changes and I almost never use the OneClick encoder anyway, but it'd be interesting to find out if the result is any different. :) For DVDs where I've ripped more than one title to a single folder, normally I'd use vobsubber to open each IFO file and extract the subs for each episode individually, and again with the chapter extractor for the chapters, so I don't know how OneClick handles it.

@ LigH...

Thanks, it's helpful to know the IFO is actually a requirement for proper SUB extraction. The problem Zathor identified with the DVD Decrypter IFO is that it's simply a copy from the disc and therefore reflects the original VOB contents and not the subset of elements that I usually ask it to extract. Having said that, it now seems obvious that I should just try extracting complete VOB's instead. That should solve the indexer/IFO issue at the expense of extra data being copied/extracted.

@ tebasuna51...

Thanks for mentioning Subtitle Edit. I saved a link to it for when I finally commit to making OCR subs. Interesting idea of swapping the video inside the MakeMKV file. I'll keep that in mind if the "complete VOB" approach doesn't work out.

@ hello_hello...

Thanks for the tips on using DVD Shrink as an extractor. Regarding One Click, besides my recent test for Zathor I don't actually use it. I like the concept and did try it years ago but found I wanted more control over cropping than it allowed. As for AnyDVD, I use it to make full ISO's for my initial viewings so I'm not constantly swapping discs or waiting for them to spin back up after the slightest pause in playback.

Now I'm trying to automate this into a Oneclick profile so I can batch-process, and the one thing I can't seem to get working is the setting found in the Avisynth Script Editor called "source is anime". Is there a good way to carry that setting over to a OneClick profile? This is using MeGUI 2624.

Will be added in the next development build. You can find it then in the AVS profile settings.

I used to be able to encode files in 10-bit x265. Now all I get is "error."

In the log, it just says:

LigH

If option "-D" (--output-depth) is suddenly "unknown", then there may surprisingly be a single bit depth build of x265, not including multiple libraries? Not for me, though; MeGUI still uses this version:

x265 [info]: HEVC encoder version 2.1+2-c0d91c2b4048
x265 [info]: build info [Windows][GCC 6.2.0][64 bit] 8bit+10bit+12bit

Did you exchange x265 on your own?

You should always post a whole log, at least a larger part of the whole relevant job (including the complete generated command line).

After some time after encoding started it's speed started to decrease slowly. Didn't see if it reached 0 or not.

The day before everything worked fine. On next day when I turned on my laptop I changed some options: added "OverrideAlgo=2, OverrideArea=0, Tuning="Animation"" parameters to InterFrame function in AviSynth script. Video preview of the script opened fine and I could without any errors jump at some specified frames. Then I started encoding job and after an hour or so it crashed.

Thank you for your attention.

I believe overheating may be a quite probable reason.

Nevermind, I got it. Instead of just -D, I had to type out --output-depth instead.

MeGUI's handing of the custom command line seems a little odd, and I think different for x264 and x265.

For x265 I thought MeGUI was behaving itself at first, because the following added to the command line section produced a 10 bit encode as you'd expect:

--vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000 -D 10

The following added to the custom command line section:
-D 10 --vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000
Results in this command line:
---D10 --vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000

The log file has an entry displaying the custom command line followed by the actual command line being used and they obviously don't match. For example:

custom command line: -D 10
Job command line: "C:\Program Files\MeGUI\tools\x265\avs4x265.exe" --x265-binary "C:\Program Files\MeGUI\tools\x265\x86\x265.exe" --crf 23 ---D 10 --sar 1:1 --output "D:\test.hevc" "D:\test.avs"

If it helps any, for MeGUI version 2674, the following in the custom command line section:
-D 10 --vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000
would have resulted in this command line:
-D 10 --vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000 ---D 10 --vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000

As far as I know -P can be used to set a profile, but according to avs4x265 that results in different types of oddness.

custom command line: --vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000 -P main10
Job command line: "C:\Program Files\MeGUI\tools\x265\avs4x265.exe" --x265-binary "C:\Program Files\MeGUI\tools\x265\x86\x265.exe" --crf 23 --vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000 -P main10 --sar 1:1 --output "D:\test.hevc" "D:\test.avs"
avs4x265 [info]: "main10" - --frames 600 --fps 30000/1001 --input-res 720x480 --input-csp i420 --crf 23 --vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000 --sar 1:1 --output D:\test.hevc

For x264 if I add the following to the custom command line everything is fine:

--vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000 --profile main

For the following, the third option doesn't display in the command line section of the encoder configuration (I assume because it's wrong and MeGUI doesn't understand it) but it's added to the command line anyway, resulting in an error:

--vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000 --pofile main

For the following, the third option doesn't display in the command line section of the encoder configuration once again, and MeGUI doesn't include it in the command line, but for some reason it causes MeGUI to ignore the second option too and only the first is added to the command line.

--vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000 -profile main

From the log file:
custom command line: --vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000 -profile main
Job command line: "C:\Program Files\MeGUI\tools\x264\x264.exe" --keyint 300 --vbv-bufsize 50000 --sar 1:1 --output "D:\test.mkv" "D:\test.avs"

Indeed, the pipe bridge avs4x265 uses "-P" as short option of its own parameter "--x265-binary" to select a specific executable file name (required when it differs from "x265.exe"); but the called x265 supports "-P" later as short option for "--profile".

The other pipe bridge used for x264, avs4x264mod (which is in fact avs4x26x, check its help screen!), instead uses "-L" which is used neither in x264 nor in x265 (yet); so I believe MeGUI should use avs4x26x instead of avs4x265 for x265 as well (and use its true name).

Hi,

Is 2624 still the latest stable version? It seems it was released a year ago.

Where do I get the latest/recent beta/test version?

Thanks

Hi there,

Being on the development tree of Megui I updated to the version 2687. x264 has been updated to the 2744. Now every video encode ends with following error.

[Information] [2016-12-11 10:55:49] C:\Program Files\MeGUI\tools\x264\x264-10b.exe: unknown option -- x26x-binary

Looking forward to see a fix to it

You are using a 32bit OS, correct? Yes, there seems to be a bug creating the command line. A fix will be available in the next hours.

Can someone help me out with full chroma and megui ffms2 2.2.3. Subtitles go missing and for the most part it's files encoded in 4:4:4 that I get this problem with. Some suggestions as to why subtitles won't show up?
