Hi All, hope someone can help!

I had to reinstall my computer following a dead HDD

When I now try to encode a BluRay, MeGUI (or x264) pauses during encode.

It will encode for a period of time, then do nothing for a period of time (I've not timed it)

When encoding it runs at ~10 fps with x264_64 using 70-80% CPU and avs4x264mod using 15-20% CPU

After a few frames encoding stops and both process drop CPU

Then it starts up again

Rinse, repeat

I have the priority set to NORMAL.

Because of the pauses the average fps is down at 4.5 fps

I have reinstalled exactly what I had before and there is nothing now running during an encode that wasn't before.

The only difference is that I have switched from a SATA II HDD running in IDE mode to a SATA III SSD running in AHCI mode.

In case it is something drive related I have tried switching back to IDE mode but get the same result.

Tonight I am going to put the HDD back in and try again to encode a file from HDD instead of SSD to see if that makes a difference but wanted to check on here to see if anyone has any other ideas before I start dismantling my computer again!

AVS and Log included below.

Hardware:

Abit AB9 QuadGT motherboard (Intel P965 Express chipset with ICH8 controller)
Intel E6600 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo

Nvidia GTX 550 Ti (301.42 driver)
C: - Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD
D: - Kingston V+200 120GB SSD
Windows 7 x64 (fully patched)

Is that possible to make MeGUI Distributed Encoding like in RipBot264 ??

Possible? Yes
Likely? No
Reason: No time and interest for such things.
But of course if someone else will do this I will add it to MeGUI.

When I now try to encode a BluRay, MeGUI (or x264) pauses during encode. No clue, but you can try to disable x264 x64 in the MeGUI settings to test it without avs4x264mod.

I have come across this warning with MeGui when using DGAVCIndex/DGAVCDecode.dll:

I do not get this warning when using DirectShowSource. Where is the improper "240000/10010 fps" coming from?

Your AviSynth script (and therefore AVCSource) is reporting this frame rate.

My AviSynth script is below. I don't understand why I get this warning when MeGui created the script.
Is there a bug with dgavcindex or Avisynth? One of them is adding one too many zeros!! ("240000/10010 fps" )
I can just use directshowsource, but it does seem like there is a problem here, one that is not self inflicted. :(

LoadPlugin("C:\Tools\MeGUI\tools\dgavcindex\DGAVCDecode.dll")
AVCSource("D:\BD BACKUPS\Shameless Season 1 Episode 11\SHAMELESS S1 E11.dga")

Because fractions can be reduced, it is just a warning, but the quotient is the same.

You might get rid of the warning by enforcing the expected dividend and divisor with AVCSource("*.dga").AssumeFPS(24000, 1001) — but in this specific case only; other movies may have other framerates.

You might get rid of the warning by enforcing the expected dividend and divisor with AVCSource("*.dga").AssumeFPS(24000, 1001) — but in this specific case only; other movies may have other framerates.

Thanks LigH, that did eliminate the warning. I don't recall ever seeing that warning before and I have done quite a few of these same type of reencodes, using dgavcindex, and never needed to add assumeFPS before.
Perhaps MeGui should make that call as it does when using directshowsource. ;)
Maybe Zathor could provide his thoughts.

Up to now the DG tools had been correctly reporting the frame rate to AviSynth and therefore I did not add the assumefps like for DirectShowSource or FFVideoSource. On the other hand DGAVCDec is quite old and more or less outdated. Nevertheless there are some sources where it is still required (at least in the MeGUI workflow).

I was using WinMenc to encode .mp4. Decided to try MeGUI, but a slight problem I am having is that the .mp4 created do not seem to be universally playable as the .mp4 created in WinMenc. i.e 1st Gen Ipod's, Klite codec using MPC will only play the audio and not video.
This is using Xvid with HE-ACC in the .mp4 container.
The files play fine in VLC or if I use Windows Media player on the same machine that Klite/MPC do not work. Files created with WinMEnc are fine.

What is the difference in how the .mp4 is created to make this difference?

I would prefer to use MeGUI as I get much faster encoding times as I'm able to use 8 threads.

ok fair enough, I dont know WinMenc but if its like MeGui and uses an external library for the xvid encoding maybe the versions used by the 2 programs are different. It could also be that the parameters used to encode are different.... Encoding the same file using the 2 progs and comparing the 2 resulting files in Mediainfo may shed some light on the difference.

It plays the audio but freezes on the picture. I am not using Qpel or GMC but I will test without B-Frames and use some of the profiles.

One other question; is it possible to upscale stuff. i.e I want to go from 624*X to 640*X but even though I set it in the resize window it will remain at 624*X

hi, i know there is an issue with Xvid 1.3.x series (2gb issue), my question is, is there nothing that can be done on this, is anyone even looking for a fix for this problem, other GUI's have introduced the new version, but MeGUI still hasn't, why is this matter not being dealt with.... Xvid is still being used by many (mainly cost really, replacing all those divx players out there is gonna take a lot of time LOL)

reason i have posted is because other GUI's (several) can utilize the new xvid series, yet MeGUI as well developed as it is still has not found a solution to this problem (my concern is that no ones even bothering with it)

just got a new upgrade rig, my i7 runs terrible with xvid 1.2.x, but tried out xvid 1.3.x with other programs and without question the new version is much better (so much faster)

any feedback welcome

You can use new Xvid 1.3.2 in MeGUI but you have to replace the appropriate files manually.
Use the search function and you will see how.

Are you sure it is faster that existing Xvid in MeGUI?
Did you time the conversion with a stopwatch or you relied on fps reported?

if 1.3.2 is known to cause hit and miss, then of course i too would rather leave it,

Xvid4psp (adding the normal Avisynth SetmodeMT stuff) 1.3.2 encode finished 4% quicker (ran three tests and grabbed the average)

1.3.2 does seem a little faster on my system (although didn't know it would be so little....4-6% is hardly nothing..... so not really an issue after all (i was expecting 1.3.2 to do a lot better job on the 1st pass.... the 1st pass is where Xvid REALLY underutilizes the CPU, and 1.3.2 doesn't do much to improve on this....although i have no figures to back that up, as it's hard to calculate this part of the encoding because of the weird ramdom CPU spikes)

thanks anyway

one thing still puzzles me however..... how as other GUI's like Xvid4psp - staxrip solved this 2gb issue?

Hi guys,

I have an issue about avi encoding with MeGUI. I hope you could help me.

I usually use MeGUI to make some repack (1,4GB to 700MB) or encode MP4 to AVI but since several month the file size outpout are wrong. Less than 700MB (400 or 500MB) for a movie.
It always worked when I choose filesize = 700MB in Autoencode (final step)

I don't understand. I hope you do understand what I'm saying cause I don't speak english a lot...^^
I have ffdshow + haali. I'm using MeGUI x86 I don't really know why the file size are now always smaller than I decide.

thanks for your help

The 2 GB border is an issue of xvid_rawenc.exe (which is used by MeGUI), but not of e.g. VirtualDubMod using the Xvid VfW Codec (as it is used by some other GUIs).

global MeGUI_darx = 67

SetMemoryMax(768)
SetMTMode(5,3)
<input>
SetMTMode(2)

however my other profile "NNEDI Denoise" as follows works fine!!!

SetMemoryMax(768)
SetMTMode(5,3)
<input>
SetMTMode(2)
LoadPlugin("D:\Program Files (x86)\MeGUI\tools\yadifmod.dll")
LoadPlugin("D:\Program Files (x86)\MeGUI\tools\nnedi3.dll")
YadifMod(order=-1, edeint=nnedi3(field=-1))
<crop>
<denoise>

then i don't get an error, why is the first script causing error, but second script OK, the first script is as simple as it gets.

i'm trying to create a new profile you see, as i have a progressive DVD,

i found the problem, if i turn of the noise filter under "Filters" - Mpeg2 source in avisynth script creator then hit preview AVS script, i get the error "script return was not a video clip", however if i turn the noise filter back ON, and then hit preview again, all is well. I have no IDEA what's going on there...... i'm thinking got to be a bug right!

so here is one example, the following causes error
# Set DAR in encoder to 93 : 68. The following line is for automatic signalling
global MeGUI_darx = 93
global MeGUI_dary = 68
SetMemoryMax(768)
SetMTMode(5,3)

LoadPlugin("D:\Program Files (x86)\MeGUI\tools\yadifmod.dll")
LoadPlugin("D:\Program Files (x86)\MeGUI\tools\nnedi3.dll")

yet this one is ok

# Set DAR in encoder to 93 : 68. The following line is for automatic signalling

#crop
LoadPlugin("D:\Program Files (x86)\MeGUI\tools\avisynth_plugin\UnDot.dll")

Deleted this post, another problem has occurred that contradicts what i previously thought, need to look more into this.

EDIT,

i believe i found the problem,

The script can't have SetMTMode (xxxx)

at the end, there must be something after it, why i don't know, i guess Avisynth expects something after the SetMTMode (xxxx)

it was quite sometime ago i originally setup my profiles, it was only by chance that i needed to create a new one after all this time when i got the script problem.

my best guess is, all the other profiles i created always had something after SetMTMode (xxxx) in the script, so the above issue never arose, only now was i attempting to create a script that had nothing after SetMTMode, and this of course was not acceptable by Avisynth (if nothing is going to be added after SetMTMode(2) in the script then why is SetMTMode(2) there in the first place)

anyway all seems well, i have successfully created 3 scripts now, the good news is from all this, it's given me a chance to recreate my profiles from scratch, which in turn has allowed me to do a nice cleanup which has been due for quite some time, and also implement a few more profiles (i had a habit of altering other profiles which could lead to problems if i forgot i altered them, which did happen from time to time, no more hybrid profiles any more)

(i have made a note of the above problem in a text file.... just in case i forget)

Is Zathor on a break? I wondered why MeGUI hasn't had any updates in the last 30 seconds..... ;)

Probably a bad time to ask these questions then, but I guess some AVIsynth knowledgeable person is likely to know the answers.
When opening a video via DirectShowSource, MeGUI's default script looks something like this, and the Filters tab lets you select the desired frame rate.
DirectShowSource("E:\video.mkv", fps=25.000, audio=false, convertfps=true).AssumeFPS(25,1)
I'm just curious.... if, as I understand it, "convertfps=true" is there to convert the frame rate if need be, what does adding AssumeFPS() actually do?

When opening the same video as above using ffms2, MeGUI's default script looked something like this:
FFVideoSource("E:\video.mkv", threads=1)
So a few questions there.
Any logical reason why the script couldn't default to using the same type of frame rate conversion as when opening a video using DirectShowSource? It occured to me after having problems converting a couple of 25fps MKVs, which as best as I can tell have slight variations in the frame rate in a few places (well it appeared in this case, every so often there's a frame with an 80ms duration rather than 40ms) that adding frame rate conversion to the script would fix any such conversion problems and make converting variable frame rate video easier. I assume if no frame rate conversion is required, including it won't have any adverse side effects?
To convert this particular video successfully with audio in sync after indexing, I had to manually add the frame rate conversion. ie:
FFVideoSource("E:\video.mkv", fpsnum=25, fpsden=1)
What I don't understand is how ffms2 determines the frame rate, so maybe this is why VFR to CRF can't be done automatically when indexing a video, but as there's no mention of the frame rate being used, in order to work out what the audio sync problem might be I had to open MeGUI's script with MPC-HC to look at the frame rate it reported, which in this case turned out to be 24.959fps rather than 25fps. Once I discovered that and the penny finally dropped, then I set about learning how to modify the script for frame rate conversion.

One other thought... any reason why the AVS Script Creator's Filters/AVISource/DSSource tab is the only one with a frame rate option?

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but for those who stayed till the end..... thoughts anyone?

@ hello_hello:

AviSynth simply doesn't support variable framerates. Handling them usually means either converting the video to constant framerate by duplicating frames where necessary, or caching the framerate profile, assuming CFR while processing, and restoring the VFR profile in the final copy.

MeGUI was originally made to convert video sources which don't have VFR (e.g. DVD Video). As versatile as a GUI may be, it has its limits. Some things are so "out of mainstream", they are just too complex for automated processing and may require manual solutions.

hello_hello
26th July 2012, 13:27
LigH,
I understand AviSynth doesn't support variable frame rates, but converting "variable" frame rate video to constant frame rate was what I was trying to achieve. Correct me if I'm wrong, but generally when converting video, if it's VFR, wouldn't converting to CFR be the usual objective, especially given MeGUI is designed to convert from/to CFR video anyway.

I guess my logic is this, and please once again correct me if it's flawed....
When encoding CRF video without changing the frame rate, adding frame rate conversion to the script wouldn't (I assume) have any adverse effects. However if it's VFR video, adding frame rate conversion to the script should at least allow you to successfully convert it without audio sync issues. When opening video via DirectShowSource, MeGUI appears to already do this. It even lets you specify a new frame rate, so I'm just wondering why when opening video using FFMS2 the same thing couldn't be done. Wouldn't MeGUI just need to assume all video is VFR and convert it to CFR?

As much as I'm not a fan of the program, Handbrake has an option to select a CFR or VFR when encoding. Just to see what would happen, I ran one of the "problem" MKVs through Handbrake a couple of times. Once while selecting VFR mode, and again when selecting CFR mode. In both cases it produced an encode with perfectly synced audio. The VFR encode was the same as the original while the CFR encode obviously added extra frames. I assume Handbrake doesn't use AviSynth but if there's no effective way to get MeGUI to produce a VFR encode, automatically converting VFR to CFR would be nice, if it's do-able.

DirectShow based frame rate conversion is quite low quality, based on duplicating or removing frames. Not in all cases the most recommendable method.

Why should MeGUI assume all videos to be VFR? No DVD movie, no Blu-ray movie, no DVB TV programme (assuming no mixed contents) has VFR. Only very compressed sources like webcam or internet videos may have that, but converting "eye-cancer goo" is not the reason why MeGUI was made.

thanks "AMED", haven't tried yet, i did try using - encoding setup - one click profile - audio AC-3: aften - DVD - good- encode audio: if codec does not match

i assumed the above would mean, if AC-3 then leave only mux, else encode to above setting (AC-3 in this case)

unfortunately that was not the case, the file was encoded to AAC (no idea why as AAC was not set....some where MeGUI decided todo AAC on it's own!!!)

trying never now, hope it works as i have come to love one click.

do have suggestion though for one click.

when doing mutiple episode DVD's - one click needs to put each DVD into it's own temp directory (VTS2 can't go in the same temp folder where there is also a VTS2 for example)

not what i do is goto main setting in megui, change default temp folder to say "H:\MEGUI\1"
then after DVD 1 is set up and Queued , i then change temp folder to "H:\MEGUI\2"
and i do this for each DVD i have, although this is reasonably quick, it would be quicker if i could change the number at the end of the folder location manually..... but MeGUI does not allow manual alterations to folder locations manually, one has to use the ".." and browse for folder each time (this is made worst by the fact that browsing ALWAYS resets to default location, so i have to go hunting to H:\MEGUI\x every time) which really slows down adding a lot of jobs.

any chance this can be change in the code to allow us to manually change the folder location by clicking in the folder field.

thanks.

ONE last thing to doom9, why is the auto log out so quick now, need to log back in again to post this very text!

Well MeGUI does use DirectShow based frame rate conversion, so whether it be the best method or not, shouldn't MeGUI at least endeavor to keep the audio in sync when using other decoding methods also?
Or if there's a better method of converting the frame rate when decoding by other means, then why not use it?

After a bit of experimenting it seems when converting video which has duplicate frames, but a constant frame rate, GUIs using Mencoder seem to add "harddup" to the command line which forces the encoding of duplicate frames, but there's also "noencodedups" which ouputs zero byte frames to indicate duplicates. Either way though.... synced audio. After testing my "problem" MKVs this way and having no audio sync issues, I assume "duplicate frames" is the issue I'm having.

While I'm not sure which method it uses yet, AviSource seems to handle duplicate frames fine. I remuxed one of the "problem" MKVs as an AVI and used AviSource to open it, and the output had synced audio with no frame rate conversion needed.

MeGUI automatically adds frame rate conversion to the script when opening video via DirectShow, which effectively handles duplicate frames correctly when encoding, so.....

That leaves duplicate frames and indexing with ffms2. So far, whether it be MKV or AVI, ffms2 gives me a reduced number of frames (minus the duplicates, I assume), and while the total duration is correct, it reduces the overall frame rate to get there. Maybe the way duplicate frames are handled is an ffms2 issue and not an MeGUI one (although adding frame rate conversion to the script would seem to be the way to fix it).

Does AviSynth have any way of identifying/handling duplicate frames I've not been able to discover?

What is the best option, or does it make no difference ?

1. Extract the *.m2ts w/Tsmuxer and change the fps to 23.976. Process through Megui and then mux w/the audio ?

2. Extract, leaving the fps @ 24.0, process through Megui. Mux with the audio and change the video fps then?

3. Extract and re-encode video @24.0, then change the audio fps to 24.0 ? (Track is DTS-HD, which I can convert to wavs. Then change fps in DTS MA Suite)

Sorry but audio can't have 23.976 fps.
If your audio is in sync with a video 23.976 (V23) you need compare the frames with your new video 24 fps (V24)

- If V24 have the same frames than V23 (discard any initial delay for different credits), and you don't need other audio in sync with V24, recode V24 with AssumeFps(24000,1001) and mux the audio in sync with V23 (maybe with some delay for credits)

- If V24 have different frames than V23, with F24 = F23 x 1.001, you can recode V24 at 24 fps and mux the audio in sync with V23.

- With other differences you need edit the audio.

About your options 1) and 2), is indiferent, use AssumeFps(24000,1001) instead.

Your option 3) "change fps in DTS MA Suite" don't work. You need extract the wavs with:
eac3to input.dtshd output.wavs -23.976 -changeTo24.000

Sorry but audio can't have 23.976 fps.
If your audio is in sync with a video 23.976 (V23) you need compare the frames with your new video 24 fps (V24)

Thanks for the response !

Of course you are correct. I should have stated that audio was from, and in sync, with a V23.
Both are the same film, different sources/encodes.

Outlander (2008) Canadian (good ole Alliance) release that 's wrong AR (1:85.1) with DTS-HD audio, V23 (mpeg2).

Euro release that's V24 (mpeg4 that's much higher BR), correct OAR 2:35.1, however with only lossless DD audio.

V24=165,504 frames , V23= 165,616 frames. I havn't checked for differences in credits.

Since my post, I played around with it and extracted the V24 with Tsmuxer, changing frame rate to 24000/1001. Then wth Megui, also "AssumeFps(24000,1001)". Redundant, I know, but no harm I think.

I tested a 10 min clip in VLC until I found it to be in sync ~ (-4) sec and then entered that delay in Tsmuxer.
Final result after recode, in Mediainfo, under "Audio", video delay = 11ms.

Seems to be in sync at all the points I checked throughout the film.

hi there, i got an annoying issue here : all the AVI Source/DSS Source tab from the AviSynth script creator is greyed-out for any .d2v.

any idea as to how i can fix it ?

thanks in advance.

*.d2v files are index files for MPEG2Source; they are neither AVI files nor files a DirectShow source filter could detect. If you don't want to use MPEG2Source (why not?!?), don't use the index, but the media file directly as video source.

Hey all, I have a problem encoding cartoon to xvid.
I've extracted the episodes with pgc demux into vob files, and I am trying to encode them to xvid, but it craps out on me. I am using one 1 custom made click profile with x264/aac, just changing the encoders to xvid 2 pass balanced with mp3 96kbit abr. Encoding the file to x264 works perfectly and without errors.

And here is AVS script:

I can't trouble shoot it. I don't know where it goes wrong, because if I only use any x264 preset profile and nero aac, it works.

So that's the error. Have you tried using FFMpegsource.
