Megui 2624

I don't understand why MediaInfo shows my avi file that is encoded in basic 2pass as XVID Writing Library 67. I used Megui 25xx from my external HD to encode the same file and it shows xvid 1.2.1 (yes I realise its an older version) but the external encode played properly. Laptop encode plays so so so so slowly...instead of a 2 minute file it reads as a 25 minute file. What am I doing wrong?

Laptop xvid is latest 1.3.2

With VS2015 the number of files that are potentially needed has grown quite a bit, 50+ DLLs. The Universal CRT alone is 40 DLLs. Maintaining a portable version of all these dependencies may get messy.
Once again I have to agree. I can try only to make it work.

That is hard to guess without a log file. Could you please provide the log files for both encodings?

you'll see in the red boxes, the differences

i think i have to figure out how to find the log files from megui though :(

In the MeGUI folder is a subfolder "logs" where you can find the logs. To make reading easier the best would be if you could encode on both installations the same file in one session each (=only the encoding job, no other jobs between opening & closing MeGUI).

FYI, not that it would make a difference, my original encode was a 2 minute sample or so...then when i ran the same encode on the laptop under megui 2624, i used a smaller 1 minute or so sample...just to make things quicker for me. bitrate should have been around 2000 or so...

Please create a copy of your MeGUI 2624 directory, start the copy & select in the MeGUI settings in the "Extra Configuration" tab the "use develeopment update server". Search for updates and your build will be updated (you will have to restart MeGUI likely twice during the updates). That way you get a more recent FFmpeg version which may help. If not please open the AVS script with e.g. VirtualDub and report the frame count & rate.

Someone may be able to correct me, but I believe the Xvid version number is converted from the bitstream info, and I suspect MediaInfo isn't translating it.

There's a list here, even though it's out of date.
DivX5-6/Xvid Bitstream version info (http://xmm.sourceforge.net/DivX5-6_Xvid_Bitstream_version.php)

The user data written by Xvid 1.3.4 (which is the latest) is XviD0067. This is what I found in MeGUI's log file:

i think i see now where the problem arises!!!
i guess these days megui encodes an xvid file in three phases, the last being some sort of MUXING??? i ended up POSTPONING that part, and then playing the resulting .m4v file...it played perfectly!!! then when i ran the last job, it makes the file .avi. Then it just slows down to chit!!!!

This is the reason why I asked you to update to he dev build as there a newer FFmpeg is used.

look at the other thread please Zathor, same issue with the updated ffmpeg :( posted logs & the like...

i replaced the new ffmpeg file with the one from my 2525 build, and it works perfectly. so this is indeed a bug

I haven't paid much attention to this in the past. But while encoding a particular file this morning, I got a warning in the log.

"resize [warning] converting range from TV to PC"

While I did specify the range as PC in the encoding profile, the file itself was already converted to PC levels when I output it from Sony Vegas... So what is going on in this case? Is it a poorly worded notification or did it actually run a levels conversion on the video when it wasn't needed?

This is not a MeGUI message so either AviSynth or one of the encoders has thrown that. So one of those has detected that it is a TV range source. Could you please share a log?

As you are posting in two threads I do not know where to answer... however:
I just tested it myself with XVID 1.3.4, FFmpeg 3.2.2 and an MKV input file opened with LSMASH (everything default), output AVI - and it works! So it must be something with your configuration. Start with a simple input file which is not opened with AVISource, use the default XVID config and try it again. If it works revert one setting after the other.

For x264 you may need to use both --input-range pc --range pc for pc input and output. Otherwise x264 may actually attempt to convert the range which will mess up the encode if input is misdetected (like in this case).

Zathor, thank you for your help. For the timebeing, what I did by substituting old ffmpeg with the latest is working. The why I initially am concerned with, but let me see how things progress and when I have a bit more free time, I'll try to really figure out the why :)

Appreciate your time!

An unimportant "why does it happen" question.

Every so often I've noticed the outline around the resize dimensions change colour. I don't think this is always the reason.... or I'm monumentally unobservant.... but today I realised it's somehow taking on the colour of the image behind it.

Hi, I need help.
Megui's very very slow, encoding at 4 or 5 fps, for a 23 minutes dvd video, it takes over 2 hours. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Source: a MKV file ripped from a DVD using makemkv. DVD is progressive. --old cartoons--

Script:
<input>
# denoising
SMDegrain()
# anti-aliasing
SharpAAMCmod()
# line darkening
Hysteria(strength=1.2)

You would think that a dvd source with such a simple script shouldn't take too long. I used Staxrip and it's super fast compared with megui. But Staxrip doesn't have an anti-aliasing filter for a progressive source, so megui creates a much better image.

My PC: i7-5820K 3.30Ghz (6-core), 32 GB Ram, Gefore GTX 970, Win10 64bit.

Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks

What speed do you get if you use a clean basic script? What speeds when you add you denoising and speed with denoising + anti-aliasing?

What speed do you get if you use a clean basic script? What speeds when you add you denoising and speed with denoising + anti-aliasing?

simple script: input + basic megui denoise = 175 FPS

when I add SMDegrain, it decrease to 7 FPS

after that, sharpAAMCmod and Hysteria decrese the speed a bit more down to 4 FPS.

Why in Staxrip goes way faster when using SMDegrain filter as well? I really like the result of SMDegrain, maybe I need to change it to something else.

LigH
16th January 2017, 08:50
SMDegrain has more than a dozen of parameters (http://avisynth.nl/index.php/SMDegrain#Parameters). Well possible that a call with specific values can be faster than the default call without any, yet still effective enough.

What was your CPU usage when you ran these tests? if CPU usage is low then you need to use more workers. If your doing batch encoding runs then this should speed it up a bit.

my CPU usage when encoding with SMDegrain filter was no more than 7%. I tried to change to avisynth MT and played with it, but it didn't improve the speed. Encoding with no filters uses over half of my CPU.

How can I make megui use 90% or 100% of my CPU? that should speed the encoding time a lot.
Thanks

On a DVD PAL 720x576 progressive video I get 13-17 fps on an old Intel Core2Duo with SMDegrain.
Color correction and a little sharpening applied alongside....
Almost 100% CPU load.
Everything on Avisynth MT with the most modern plugins.
So definitely there is something wrong with your Avisynth installation.
Edit: Or did you use placebo settings under MeGui?

I wonder if that's a decoding issue. Normally x264 on it's own will use 100% of the CPU. SMDegrain with the default settings shouldn't reduce CPU usage that much. Encoding a sample 720p video with SMDegrain() in the script, my CPU usage was sitting on 96% (4 core CPU).

Or are you using Xvid? It's not as efficient when it comes to CPU usage.

How can I show the video frames encoded while meGUI encoding that video such as VirtualDub?
:(

LigH
23rd January 2017, 12:54
MeGUI cannot. It lets the AviSynth script be encoded by an external CLI encoder but does not intercept the video stream, so it is not able to display it. It only intercepts the console output of the encoder, so it barely knows the currently processed frame number.

:(

If it doesn't have to be the exact frame being encoded, you can always configure MeGUI to tell the x264 encoder to write the output directly to an MKV (if it's not doing so already) and the output MKV can be opened with a player such as MPC-HC, even while encoding is still in progress.

If the idea is to preview the output as it's been encoded, that'll do it.

MeGUI once again telling me it needs to close, even though it's functioning perfectly and the only problem is not being able to dismiss the "always on top" error message. ;)
If I can move the message to a second monitor and finish creating four scripts, I suspect there was no need for MeGUI to close.

Latest version of mkvextract.exe 9.8.0 throws an error on some (not all) mkvs. Reverted to backup (v9.7.1) which still works OK.

1. Is there a fix that makes v9.8.0 work?
2. Can I get 32 bit versions of mkvmerge and qaac.exe from either the stable or development servers? ATM there only seem to be 64 bit versions on offer.

TIA.

The error message is "error" under status in the MeGUI output page. Processing then stops.

It looks like your Matroska file is truncated or at least locally corrupt. But it is so close to the end. I wonder if just the audio stream is marginally shorter than the video stream.

This should not be a kind of error which blocks the rest of the process...

That's what Mosu says as well. https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1796163#post1796163

Makes sense for this specific sample. But when you encounter such a warning in the middle of the file?

OK I'll use mkvextract.exe v9.7.1 which still works.

I got this from the MKVToolNix thread:

My guess (!) is that MeGUI treats an exit code of 0 as success and anything else as a fatal error. That's not how mkvextract (and my other tools) work:

Exit code 0 = everything was OK
Exit code 1 = there were non-fatal warnings
Exit code 2 = there was a fatal error
Anything else = there is a bug in the tool, because this should never happen

Situations such as the one mentioned above should generate a warning and have mkvextract exit with exit code 1. MeGUI should treat that as "well, it did something, and the user probably wants to see the warning in question", not as "that did not work at all".

Technically, mkvextract 9.8 "works" as well as 9.7.1, it demultiplexes the audio stream. Just the handling of a premature end of the stream is different. In such a case, a more or less advanced user may want to keep the result and check the circumstances, to decide whether it is sufficient.

Hi Everyone!,

I have a huge collection of movies (mostly Blu-ray) that I started to copy/encode 4 years ago to build my HTPC. I used only MeGUI from the beginning with the one click tool and it did an awesome job. I'm still not an expert but I've read many posts and discussion from you guys that helped me a lot to understand how to encode properly for this past 4 years. Thanks a lot for that.

Basically, what I'm doing is re-encoding the video stream keeping the original resolution but reducing the size by half by lowering the bitrate (blu-ray around 12000 and DVD at a bitrate to acheive a rounded slightly lower file size). I also keep original soundtracks and forced subtitles as well and mux everything back in MKV. All my encode settings are Blu-ray compliant according to this post and the provided example as well: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=154533 (attached file: My x264 settings)

It has been a while I didn't encode DVDs because I did what I had at the beginning 3 years ago. I just bought some old good ones for cheap at a store. Today I'm facing an issue that I never faced in the past (maybe I was ignorant or a lucky newbie) and I'm not able to solve it completely. I'm a bit ashamed since it is a very fundamental parameter.

In the past, everything end up perfect, but now it's not. I do not get the proper FPS in my final MKV and that's make me doubt about what it should be. After reading and searching a lot of posts or wiki about Automatic de-interlacing, TIVTC, Tdecimate, MeGUI Autodetect settings, BD DVD PAL NTSC standards, 3:2 Pulldown, Force Film, etc, I do not get an clear answer and explanation of what happen. I'm sure something change in MeGUI but also, I'm not sure I was right at all in the past.

Here we come:

I live in NTSC world so my source file/folder is a movie from a NTSC DVD which is supposed to be 720x480 29.97fps interlaced. right?

MediaInfo reported every IFO and VOB files as 29.97fps except one VOB file (VTS_01_3) which is seems to be 23.976fps progressive. (attached file: Source INFO)

After encoding I am expecting to ending up with an MKV file at 720x480 23.976fps progressive since 3:2 pulldown and fake interlaced is selected, but no. I end up with an MKV at 29.97fps progressive where video play to fast and is shorter than the audiotrack (which make sense if it supposed to be 23.973fps right?).

What I tried and discovered:

Force Film has been always enabled from what I remember. When it is, the auto de-interlacing feature in MeGUI report my movies as progressive and do nothing. Is it normal since most of the source folder is 29.97fps ''supposed to be'' interlaced DVD? I noticed that the intermediate file Video.x264 file is reported 29.97fps interlaced by MediaInfo (attached file: VTS x264) before muxing. Anyway, after muxing, my final MKV end up as described aboved (attached file: Wrong MKV).

After trying a lot of thing and playing with the Autodetect settings in MeGUI, nothing seems to change except Disable Force Film (I saw posts where Hello_hello and manono discussed about that on others forum). MeGUI auto de-interlacing feature now report the movies as Telecined and TIVTC and Tdecimate is inserted in Avisynth script. I felt it was right but I finally ended up with the EXACT same result as with Force Film enable and without Tdecimate (both intermediate x264 file and final MKV).

Something I discovered is while encoding (before the operation finish), the intermediate file is reported as 23.976fps progressive from MediaInfo and the logs from MeGUI show the same. It's only when encoding finished and before muxing that the intermediate file is 29.97fps and interlaced

Finally, I found that the only setting that give me the good result (If it's good) is when I go editing the job line ''mux'' in the Queue tab of MeGUI and set the fps to 23,976fps before it mux by itself. When I managed my blu-ray encode ''mux'' job line, I notice like a year ago that this parameter change. Before it was auto-detected but now, it's not possible to update this job without specifying a fps. It never affect my result with Blu-Ray when I don't edit this job line since 1080p NTSC blu-ray source files are always 23.976fps by default. But now, back to DVD encode it's another game. (attached file: Good MKV)

Questions are:

Is it right and normal that MeGUI report my source file as progressive with Force Film enabled?

Is Force Film should be disabled to insert a TIVTC and Tdecimate operation for ending up with 480p 23.976fps?

Why I ended up with the same result no matter Force Film or not and with the wrong FPS?

Should I just keep Force Film enabled and manually edit mux job line operation to set the FPS at 23.976fps?

Is there a way to automatically set/get fps to 23.976fps in MeGUI instead of changing the parameter manually? (as it was before)

It is the right way to ended up with a progressive 23.976fps MKV from a DVD NTSC source?

Is it the good choice to ended up with a progressive 23.976fps MKV from a DVD NTSC source?

Sorry for such a long post and thanks in advance

I have checked the circumstances and find that mkvextract.exe 9.8 causes MeGui to exit with an error when processing most of the mkv files in my archives. The behaviour is not just confined to the one file I posted details on, which appeared to have a premature end of the stream.

As a result I have reverted to mkvextract.exe 9.7.1 which does not cause MeGui to exit with an error.

I suggest that less advanced users would prefer a version of mkvextract.exe that works with MeGui than to try and work out what it is about their mkv files that causes mkvextract.exe 9.8 not to work.

Ideally I'm sure that less advanced users would prefer to see mkvextract.exe 9.8 working well with all mkv files in MeGui.

Please try MeGUI 2703 with your files. It should fix the issue.

Hi Masseto and welcome to the forum :)

Sadly I am not using NTSC DVDs myself so IVTC and such things I cannot help much. However I would like to know which version of MeGUI you are using. If it is not the development branch (= MeGUI 27xx) then it may be worth a try to do an update. This is also possible in a copy of your current MeGUI folder.

Thanks! That has fixed the issue, mkvextract.exe 9.8 now working in MeGUI 2703 without error.

Mosu considers mkvextract's current behavior to be correct.
