Is anyone having issues with DTS audio error converting to AC3 from the MKV file? I keep getting an error and I also downloaded the older versions too and still the same problem.

well in the ongoing update to get the Dexter season one mkv eps to play on ps3 things are not so good. as mentioned mkv2vob didnt accept the files at all to mux or transcode. GotSent makes a muxed vob (GS makes a .mpg extension) which seems like it works but freezes/slows up 5-6 min in.
Super's ps3 setting just makes an mp4 which works but has 2ch audio and the one i watched didn't look great quality and the audio went out of sync towards the end. When I try to make an mpeg-2 using Super it seems to make one ok that works on pc but not ps3.
I guess thats why mkv2vob wouldn;t mux it or transcode it, these mkv files have something funky with them, but there are prob others like it.
seems ps3 is just picky and with some mkv the only thing tht will work for ps3 is the convert to mp4 which isn't that ideal.
here are the details of the mpeg-2 file converted from mkv using Super that shows up as corrupted on ps3 and with soem strange resoltion even those these specs clearly show its 1280x720
Format : MPEG-2 Program
Format/Family : MPEG-2
File size : 1.16 GiB
PlayTime : 51mn 1s
Bit rate : 3269 Kbps
Video #0
Codec : MPEG-2 Video
Codec profile : Main@Main
Codec settings/Matrix : Standard
PlayTime : 51mn 608ms
Bit rate : 2976 Kbps
Bit rate mode : CBR
Width : 1280 pixels
Height : 720 pixels
Aspect ratio : 1.000
Frame rate : 23.976 fps
Chroma : 4:2:0
Interlacement : Progressive
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.135
Audio #0
Codec : AC3
PlayTime : 51mn 1s
Bit rate : 256 Kbps
Bit rate mode : CBR
Channel(s) : 6 channels
Sampling rate : 48 KHz
ChannelPositions : Front: L C R, Rear: L R, Subwoofer
^
what in the above doesnt the ps3 like?
and here is the one ep that actually worked in ps3 after transcoding to mpeg-2 (using mkv2vob when auto detect determined it needed to transcode)
Format : MPEG-2 Program
Format/Family : MPEG-2
File size : 2.53 GiB
PlayTime : 53mn 46s
Bit rate : 6747 Kbps
Video #0
Codec : MPEG-2 Video
Codec profile : Main@High-1440
Codec settings/Matrix : Standard
PlayTime : 53mn 46s
Bit rate : 6233 Kbps
Bit rate mode : VBR
Width : 1280 pixels
Height : 720 pixels
Aspect ratio : 1.000
Frame rate : 23.976 fps
Chroma : 4:2:0
Interlacement : Progressive
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.282
Audio #0
Codec : AC3
PlayTime : 53mn 46s
Bit rate : 384 Kbps
Bit rate mode : CBR
Channel(s) : 6 channels
Sampling rate : 48 KHz
ChannelPositions : Front: L C R, Rear: L R, Subwoofer
so a much higher bitrate on the one that worked (and larger file size)
Codec profile : Main@High-1440 instead of Main@Main (for the non working one)
Bit rate mode : VBR instead of CBR on the non working one
and
Bit rate : 384 Kbps instead of 256 on the non working one but i dont thin the audio matters as much.
so it must need to be Code profile Main@High-1440 and VBR Bit rate mode. those are the main 2 things that teh working on ps3 mpeg-2 has that the other non working doesnt.
now how do i get Super to make it Main@High-1440 for the Codec profile and VBR Bit rate mode using Super?
when i make an mpeg-2 in Super from the mkv, it shows up in ps3 as some weird res like 560x2048 and doesnt play. in Super it shows as 1280x720 though.
i dunno i guess there is a reason mkv2vob couldn't mux these certain mkv to vob or transcode to mpeg-2. the only option on these certain ones (though i'm not sure what it is about them) is to conver to mp4.

Sin City mkv 4.37gb...video 23.976fps & audio perfectly in sync.
Saying yes to mpeg2 with mkv2vob is the only way to get a playable video yet the file is almost a 9gb vob...excellent quality though. However not fitting on 2 dvd's or transferable to Fat32 ext. hdd, I split the mkv to 3 parts. The 1st part plays great but the second part is out of sync with audio!! Someone here mentioned file splitter on large vobs...but the program creates 001 files etc.( only of use for storage perhaps )...is there any other working method to split the Vob or a more reliable way to split the mkv rather than MKmerge global options?
Thanks

there has to be a better way to get these Dexter season 1 mkv's to play on ps3. nothing has worked except encoding to mp4 using Super which takes forever. mp4 has 2 ch audio and the audio is a bit out of sync, enough to annoy me especially being how long it took. I can't believe a whole series of eps couldn't be muxed to vob or the quicker transcode to mpeg-2.
I mine as well encode to wmv at this point cus i'm not impressed with mp4 and it takes almost as long.

nope looks like for mp4 its only AAC 2ch (no 5.1 option even in the "Super" prog for mp4 so its not a ps3 problem but just mp4 from mkv can only be done 2ch i guess?), so i wont be selecting mp4 as a choice anymore. I guess mpeg-2 is the best if you want mkv on ps3 with full ff/rw controls and 5.1 sound. i dont know why i bothered doing the mp4. I guess cus in 'Super', if you select ps3 as output file it automatically does mp4. why dont they offer mpeg-2 as a ps3 choice? it transcodes just as quick if not quicker I believe, it has the full ff/rw controls in ps3, and the benefit over mp4 of 5.1 sound with the one catch of the larger file size.
I wonder what other file formats work on ps3 that Sound can do (cus it can output to almost any video file type) and if there are any other choices that work, which is the fasted transcode with ff/rw controls and 5.1 sound. It probably is still mpeg-2 as the best bet but just curious.
You can do 5.1 aac I do it all the time on my Mac and it plays on the PS3.
You need mplayer on your system and faac, the first line converts the ac3 to a 5.1 wav then the second line converts the wav to a 5.1 aac.
mplayer audio.ac3 -vo null -ao pcm:nowaveheader -channels 6
faac -q 128 -I 3,6 -P -R 48000 -C 6 -X audiodump.pcm -o audio.aac --mpeg-vers 4

3r if you use -copyts in ffmpeg when you transcode it should fix any audio sync issues person have with transcoding. also if you use -sameq in your video settings part for output you do not need to worry about buffer etc as it just copies the original settings when you transcode.
also can you put in a option to force recoding in your next version? I would love to just use your program rather than having to do this manually.
thanks!

Post the details of the mpeg2 created in mkv2vob that doesnt work.
Dont post anything created in super, i dont know anything about it and doesnt help.
mkv2vob wont even attempt to make an mpeg-2 out of these mkv files I have. That was probably my first clue that its not going to work. mkv2vob gets the error and wont make a vob or mpeg-2.
I used other programs which let me make an mpeg-2 which works on the pc and looks like it works on ps3 but 5-6 minutes into it studder freezes to a super slow down halt, unwatchable.
Although at first I was annoyed that mkv2vob wouldn't do anything with these mkv'si have, but I appreciate mkv2vob not making an mpeg-2 that ultimately doesnt work on ps3. It must have detected something.
Shame I tried it a few times using other progs to realize it. Mp4 works but the problem is at least in super the only fps video option is 29.97 while the mkv is 23.976 (as most are). Super tells you to match the frame rate to the orig file if audio is out of sync but again there is no other frame rate option when making a ps3 compat mp4.
Maybe a third option for mkv2vob would be a choice to convert the mkv into an mp4? Might get a little more complicated but for one the more choices the better and for 2 in the case of this whole series of mkv I have, they can't be muxed to vob or transcoded into mpeg-2, so the only choice would be the mp4.
Ideally mkv2vob would tell you, yes this can be muxed to vob but give you the choice to convert it into an mpeg-2 or mp4 (your choice) anyway. Again some like myself might not mind the larger file size and extra time of converting into an mpeg-2 to gain ff/rw controls and maintain 5.1 audio. Mp4 seems to take longer then the transcode to mpeg-2 (believe it or not and you would think it would be the other way around since mpeg-2 comes out so large) and while like mpeg-2 it doess seem to have the full ff/rw control ability in ps3 it is limited to 2ch audio, so I can't really see anyone wanting to do mp4 unless as in the case of a bunch of these files I have which mkv2vob can't make a vob or mpeg-2 out of it and other progs waste time making an ultimately non working mpeg-2.
So my request for mkv2vob would be as before the option to force mpeg-2 transcode even if the file can be muxed to vob, and in addition if mkv2vob can't mux to vob or transcode to mpeg-2, having the ability to convert to mp4 as a last resort back up plan should basically ensure that this prog will make a working ps3 video file out of any mkv one way or another.

V1.4 10/Jan/2008
Removed confusing yes/no prompt.
Added auto/always/never transcoding option.
Added some options to prevent audio out of sync when transcoding.
oh sweet new version. so no yes no prompt? so the auto/always/never option replaces that I guess. So auto will only transcode to mpeg-2 if it can't be muxed to vob I assume. Always, will force transcode to mpeg-2 either way and never wont transcode even if the file can't be muxed to vob. The latter would then just do nothing but I guess for ppl that only want to do the quick mux but if it has to do the lengthier transcode they dont want to bother. Though they could just stop it when they see it couldn't mux and had to transcode I guess its a nice option.
But for all these files I have that mkv2vob can't seem to mux to vob or transcode to mpeg-2, I'll probably still be out of luck.
I'll give it a try though, and thanks to 3r for making such a great program, being proactive with its users and making updates/improvements. Thanks to everyones input, pointers, advice etc. and sorry for my frequent and sometimes long posts.
edit:
yep still can't do anything with these mkv I have. I get the same error.
"Unsupported Video Codec: V_MS/VFW/FOURCC"
and though i think someone breifly commented on that error, I still dont know what it means and more importantly what I can then do with these type x264 mkv (for ps3 or 360 playback) besides converting them to mp4.

there is a way to convert to mp4 without transcoding (very fast) but i have been very busy lately and it will take a while to do it.
but are you sure there is nothing wrong with your mkv files?
if it wont work even converted to mpeg2 then i would say your mkvs are bad.

yes I thought i've heard of of converting mkv to mp4 in a much faster way thats why i was surprised RipBot264 and Super take so long to do it.
Is there something wrong with my mkv files? Well they are the only x264 mkv or hd file for that matter there is of each ep of this series, yet all are different and by a few diff authors/groups.
What do you mean if it wont work as mpeg-2? mkv2vob wont even attempt to do it so yeah that is a sign these or "off" mkv but i wouldn't say bad, they are just diff in some way. I didnt make them and am just dealing with what I have to work with. Yes other progs make a non working mpeg-2 which could be further sign its a bad mkv or that i'm setting something wrong when making the mpeg-2 but i think they are just not so great files.
again either way they are all i have to work with and the only thing i've found to work is mp4, so yeah if you know a way to do it quicker let me and the thread know.
meantime I'll try and find out, but i'll prob have the rest of these eps encoded to wmv or mp4 by then or have gotten a hw media player that does x264 mkv.
Popcorn hour has a 2 month waiting list though and the tvix 6500 is delayed so..... i'm stuck with ps3 for now and remuxing/converting mkv to something that works.

i've had mixed results with GotSent also, while Super has been 100% with making mp4 from mkv and before 3r's latest version of mkv2vob was the only resort i could find in the time being. the audio was sometimes out of sync on the mp4 from mkv using Super though and it took awhile.
I did suggest adding an option to conver to mp4 but now its really not needed that he fixed the error that wouldn't let mkv2vob mux to vob or transcode to mpeg-2. the mp4 conversion seemed to take just as long or longer then mpeg-2 so i'm not so sure about your statment.
is that what you meant that mkv to mp4 conversion ws quicker then to mpeg-2? because i think its opposite. only reason i could see someone wanting mp4 is for the smaller file size then mpeg-2 and retaining the ff/rw controls just like mpeg-2. But mp4 has only 2ch audio so its no good to many.

thanks again 3r for a great program and your help and pro activeness with it. Sony has you to thank for many of us (as at leat one other mentioned) right now getting any use out of our otherwise dusty ps3's, heh. :thanks:
p.s.
now if someone can just get mkv's working directly on the ps3, then sony should be paying that person for what will result in the sale of a good # of new ps3. but this prog makes the ps3 at the very least a good hold over until the popcorn hour is more available or the Tvix 6500 come sout.

I understand about the mp4 only having 2ch audio. I enjoyed it more for the ability to keep it on one DVD-R. I know mkv2vob is meant for streaming but I prefer burning on discs. If I choose the option to never transcode on the new version of mkv2vob, will it automatically mux to vob and is it guaranteed to work on PS3? I'm not concerned with the ff/rr controls.
Quatre
10th January 2008, 23:43
ok so it worked on the mkv with the FOURCC error on prior versions. But strangely it took a little longer then usual mux to vob but i knew it was too quick to be transcoded to mpeg-2 but yet the file size more then doubled (as if its mpeg-2) 1.07gb mkv to a 2.63GB .vob
will have to see what ps3 lables it as. i'm assuming AVC and that it wont have ff/rw
only thing i can think is its jus this type of mkv gets much larger when muxed to vob. and its just i wonder how long the transcode to mpeg-2 would take because if the vob file size is about the same then thats one more reason to just do the mpeg-2 for ff/rw

its pretty much guaranteed to work as mkv2vob seems to just not do anything to the file if it can't make a file that works on ps3.
some mkv (supposedly 95% of 1080p mkv) can't be muxed to vob so you will be out of luck if you choose never transcode.

mpeg2 will be bigger then the mkv, because mpeg2 is not as efficient at compression as h264.
