you probably have a corrupted mkv file

Am I the only one who is unable to run this program on Vista x64? I double-click the exe and it briefly shows in the taskbar but immediately closes down, no error sound or anything like that. Just goes away.

It's working on my laptop as it should (Win XP).

I have moved my user folders to another physical drive using the drag'n'drop functionality in Vista. Also, I have rerouted my temp folder(s) to another drive using the environment variables. Could it be because I have Gordian Knot and some other stuff like that installed that it's interfering with it?

I would say that your problem is not Vista itself, it runs fine on vista but only on vista x32 bit version. Problem may be your x64bit. At the moment I would just stick with xp

It has always been working fine for me on vistax64, and I have now just checked again and it is still working fine :)

The MKV was fine but i think the manual remux may have messed it up.

B4tm4n doesnt know what hes talking about.

The new L4.1 releases are just valid level 4.1 and before most 1080p were not, it still a mkv file and needs to be converted in some way like with mkv2vob.
What it means is they will remux without transcoding to mpeg2.

If you read my post I did say you needed to remux to a ts file, with tsmuxer, and it will play on a PS3. There are some L4.1 files been posted on the net, and the one 1080p file I tried played fine.

Good for you. What is the matter with my installation then? I haven't found anything useful in Event Viewer, but then again I've never really understood that thing anyway. What am I supposed to look for?

Is there anything else I can try?

it does everything automatically.
just open your mkv file, select automatic and the resulting file will play on ps3.

EDIT: Damn, no aac support :( . I guess I'll have to stick w/ demuxing then remuxing via TSRemuxer.

PPS is not needed for ps3 playback.

Replacing the h264info.exe with the new version most likely wont work, mkv2vob sends control commands to its window, it relies on all the text boxes being in the same positions, it likely wont work with a new version without these commands being changed too.

thanks for the clarification 3r1c. It is a shame that h264info does not have a command line. Hopefully TSmuxer will have these issues ironed out soon so we will not need h264info at all.

just wanted to reiterate what othes have said about low volume on 1080p files with dts. I got the 720p and 1080p of the same movie and the 1080p was significantly lower after mkv2vob. more importantly the resulting 1080p mpeg-2 was lower volume then the mkv it was made from. Also took quite awhile and went from 12GB to 20GB which is a side effect of the uncompressed mpeg-2 we already know and usually i dont mind but thats just starting to push the limits on reasonable file size.

lets just hope that Level 4.1 1080p x264 becomes a new trend and we see lots more of them (def could have used on this last movie). maybe if the word gets out that there is a demand for L4.1 1080p x264, they will become more common.

I transcoded several MKVs with this tool in 2007, but that was before seeking (rast forward/rewind) was added, so is there a way I run the VOB through mkv2vob or transcode the VOB back into a MKV so that I can retranscode to get seeking working?

I have the exact same question. Anyone have any idea on how to do this? Maybe doing it manually with some tools instead of mkv2vob? I'd rather not have to download the original .mkvs again.

open up mkvmerge GUI 2.1.0 and load the file
change the video frame rate to 23.976 ( or mkvmerge defaults to 25fps )
start the remux and wait till its done and is a brand new .mkv
then run it through mkv2vob like normal

I've just been opening tsmuxergui, adding the vob file and clicking "start muxing". The resulting ts files work fine, and it is very quick.

Another noob with a feature request here :)

I am using this terrific program on Mac OS X, using VMWare Fusion.

The problem is that the program is using the temporary storage (probably on the "Documents and settings" folder) which is on the "Windows" hard drive itself.

I have rather limited space on my "Windows" machine, since I do everything using a bridged networking, so I basically point the program to a network storage. Remuxing an MKV which can easily reach 10-20GB will not be possible.

It would be great if the program would simply use the target folder as the location of the temp files storage.

Thanks again!

Try this:
Go to Control Panel -> Sytem -> Advanced -> Enviroment Variables and change the TEMP + TMP Paths there. You should be able to relocate the temp folder to an external drive.

That did the trick! :thanks:

Small tip if others are trying this as well: You can't access network folders from the command prompt, so just map a drive to the network folder, and have the environment variable point to that drive (I used Z: for example).

no. this has been answered many times in this thread. even if it could they would not play as you cannot choose subtitles from a media file playing on the ps3.

Thanks! Does each remux degrade the audio quality?

Don't think so - it just extracts the AC3 audio and h.264 video streams and muxes them into a ts file, which is what mkv2vob does as a second step (no need to do the first step of changing the level of the h.264 stream to 4.1 as that was already done when it was first converted to a vob)

yo eric,

dood, your my frickin hero. i got this ps3 two months ago and have been experimenting with everything, some good, some bad, but mostly tedious. Thing is, the ps3 upconverts sooo much better to my tv than my PC, that I want everything to go thru the ps3. Your tool is working great for me. muchas grass

just want to point out a little bug that my noob-ness caused: if you specify a destination directory that doesnt exist, mkv2vob goes through all the steps, only to fail at the very last step. resulted in the dreaded: " muxing failed" error message. probably because it doesn't know where to put the result. worked perfect (beyond perfect, because the vob looks sooo good via the ps3 vs my pc), when i gave it an existing directory. maybe not a big deal, but if ya didn't know, now u know.

Hi, to everyone having a problem using mkv2vob (or GOTSent) to transcode their MKVs... yes there is a problem at the moment with mkv2vob . The problem is actually easily fixed by down grading tsMuxeR back down to 1.2.0 (so problem is with the current version of tsMuxeR). All you have to do is go to http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=134104 and download version 1.2.0, unzip it over the files in the tools folder. This will allow you to transcode all the files that the current set up refuses to do. Before this app was working fine but I was also having problems transcoding MKVs, including old MKVs that mkv2vob used to do fine. Tracked down the problem to the version of tsMuxeR eing used. Copying over the newest version still allows you to keep 5.1 ac3 and the ability to fast forward. Last couple I've done have been fine and noticed no audio out of sync after fast forwarding.

You can see one file working here in the following pics...

This file didn't work before, but worked once I downgraded. I would have posted this sooner but I only upgraded on Friday and so had to wait 5 days before posting :)

Also, 3r1c, any chance of source or if you want a hand let me know. I could try and help to add features as would be cool to be able to do a batch process of files or even nominate a temp directory of you own.Oh, before I forget, this is an awesome little app :thanks:

subtitles twice eh?

speaking of file splitting, is there any way to predict file size (or shrink)? I've had a few vobs end up smaller than the mkv, but most end up 30% to 100% larger than the original. A couple i planned to put on a dvd9 but they ended up too large.

is it the version of tsMuxer in latest version of mkv2vob that would cause it to make an mpeg-2 that is jumpy and looks like it plays in fast forward at times from a 1080p mkv with dts?

Because my Across the Universe mpeg-2 from the 1080p mkv with dts does that and is unwatchable after taking a good few hours to transcode using mkv2vob. luckily i had the 720p version as well (not sure if it was an avc or mpeg-2) from 720p mkv (not sure if it was originally ac3 or dts) and it worked fine.

shame that 1080p is still a problem and that while things get fixed or added to mkv2vob but then suddenly other things stop working.

in this case hopefully its just a matter of overwriting tools with the older version of tsMuxer.

nice list. for the file splitting, can you make it so you can enter the size you want each portion to be? i stream my files to my PS3, and although ff/rw is supported now, i like to split my movies into 3-4 chunks using mkvmerge, but this will remove that step.

also, any word on the normalization of DTS -> AC3?

I've tried 1 of these new L4.1 encodes and it plays fine on the PS3 without re-encoding.

i ran mkv2vob on we own the night L4.1 version and it looks ike it still had to transcode to mpeg-2.

did you tell mkv2vob to never transcode for this one? does mkv2vob just think it needs tobut it doesnt?

i did downgrade the tsxmuxer to 1.2.0 in mkv2vob 1.5.3 cus that is supposed to help fix problems but is it possible that know because of that it made mkv2vob think it needed to tanscode this 1080p L4.1 mkv when it didn't or again did you just try the never transcode option and the resulting file avc .vob file worked on ps3?

edit:

i did we own the night L4.1 1080p mkv a second time this time selecting never transcode and it looks like it still transcoded. strange. i'll see of the 2 resulting files what works and what ps3 labels them as mpeg-2 or avc but so far its taking a long long time and looks like it has to transcode to mpeg-2 so now i dont see the point of L4.1 1080p mkv as it doesn't seem to be helping anything
maybe i shouldn't have reverted bck to tsxmuxer 1.2.0?

selecting never transcode for the L4.1 1080p mkv seemed to still transcode and just make an mpeg-2 in less time but one that doenst' play? i thought L4.1 mkv dont need to be transcoded? why does mkv2vob when set to auto still transcode it and when set to never transcode still makes an mpeg-2 but one that doenst play?

Eric, I started carving a statue in your honor. Thanks for the job.

It's just too bad most of the tools used do not exist under Mac OSX, this way we could create a pure mac version of your tool.

Since I'm not equipped with an Intel machine, and do not want to change, I'm stuck with my work PC, but this does the trick.

im starting to see a few of these 1080p encodes

We.Own.the.Night.2007.BluRay.1080p.DTS.L4.1.x264-CtrlHD

if i run this through MKV2VOB will it convert the DTS to ac3 and then remux or after converting the DTS will it run trough H264info then remux?

it is 10gigs....... i dont want to waste the download.....

how did you get this file working? set to auto mkv2vob still transcodes it, is taking a long long time, resulting mpeg-2 will prob be 20gb and not play properly on ps3 (jumpy/skippy video like its in fast forward at times) just like Across the Univese 1080p x264.

i tried selecting never transcode and that just make an mpeg-2 file (and it said it was transcoding during the process even though i told mkv2vob not to) that doesnt' play or work at all.

what a waste of time.

what is the proper instructions for L4.1 1080p mkv? select never transcode in mkv2vob? or should mkv2vob auto detect that it doesnt need transcoding? how come neithe worked.

was reverting TsMuxer back to 1.2.0 as someone suggested actually be part of the problem now even though someone posted that that version worked and to overwrite the newer tsMuxer files in Tools folder of mkv2vob as newer version tsMuxer was causingsome problems.
