mkv2vob: New App to Remux MKV x264/AC3 which play on PS3

Since the v2.2.2 update, I am getting "muxing failed", even when tested on files where it previously worked ok. I have tried a full re-installation. Doesn't help.. Running Vista Home Premium.

Nice app - been using it for a few months but now I have some questions -----


1 - After you've added a file and the 'transcode' begins, how do you cancel?

2 - If I want the best quality video i.e. I want to keep it HD, does it matter which transcoding codec I use? (if I use the x264 codec a 1080p movie can take all night) Is it worse quality output selecting the MPEG-2 fast codec?

3 - All my 720p movies have been fine after running them through this app, about half my 1080p movies go through the process, but when played back on the PS3, they are stuttery in particular the audio. why? Is this down to DTS?

4 - some 1080p movies dont need transcoding and MKVtoVOB is very quick outputting the mp4 file for my ps3... why?

having some strange thing converting "Before.The.Devil.Knows.Youre.Dead.720p.x264".
When selecting file spliting 4.7GB transcode is ok but on two files.
But when selected 8.5GB the transcoding fails.
Transcoding with file splitting "none" produced a good file.
Testing 8.5 and 4.7 again... (all gone OK now) maybe it was a random error or something

I just wanted to say that I signed up to this board just so I can post a giant THANK YOU for all the hard work you've put into this project of yours. Before your program came along, trying to get MKVs to play on the PS3 with 5.1 sound was an absolute nightmare.

Honestly, you are a talented and extremely helpful guy, and even though we tend to sound like a bunch of whiny pansies on this message board, I'm sure everyone here is as grateful as I am that you created your sweet little program.

In the future, I might post a question or feature request, but for now, I want to keep it simple and to-the-point... YOU'RE AWESOME!

I did however process a number into full sized VOBS and now need to split them, to fit a FAT32 drive. Rather than obtain them again & re-process, can some recommend a splitter than can cope wth such a VOB ?

If you made the vob with any mkv2vob version after v1.5 then you should be able to use tsmuxer to split it.

If you made the vob with any mkv2vob version after v1.5 then you should be able to use tsmuxer to split it.

Thanks. TsMuxer doesn't output to VOB, so I've tried .ts & .msts. Both run for a few seconds and then say

"Reading buffer overflow. Possible container streams are not syncronized. Please, verify stream fps. "

I've been using the MKV2VOB for some time now....But I'm experiencing something new... Whenever I split the MKV file over 2 disc (Muxing it to VOB) ... The source is a 6GB MKV file with 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound. The 1st disc will be 2 channel stereo only.... the 2nd disc will be in 5.1 Surround Sound! This has just started happenning. Any suggestions?

i have a weird problem.

I have a file that is a AC3 mkv file and mkv2vob will start muxing (it doesnt need to be transcoded, just remuxed) and it will get all the way up to about 90% and then MKV2VOB just stops converting the rest. No errors, i looked at the video and its perfect except the last 15 minutes are missing. I am under vista and i have tried it on 2 different PCs

This is a great feature that came in a recent update to mkv2vob. I had forgotten whether it was tsMuxeR or mkv2vob that could do this but I knew it was one of them and assume it was tsMuxeR.

Seems tsMuxeR actually can't joint .ts files while mkv2vob can ironically.

I just added the first .ts file and mkv2vob says joining so i guess its working.

Is that the correct way to use mkv2vob to join .ts files? I haven't seen it talked about. Just add the first .ts file (would the last .ts file also work? cus I know with rars the first is best) and it will join them all into one and then make it a file playable on the ps3?

I chose .mt2s as file extension output but left it as mpeg2 encoding.

speaking of which I also haven't seen it mentioned but it seems some extensions sometimes will make it seem like the file doesn't work. I just did a 1080p x264 which had to be transcoded and i did mpeg2 transcoding option in mkv2vob but did .mp4 as the file extension.

the file didnt play on the pc or the ps3 and showed up on ps3 with an incorrect resolution and file size. Just changing the extension to .mpg made it work on pc (to test though i know often files that dont work on pc after mkv2vob do work on ps3) and works on the ps3 with proper info.

I think that had happened to me before with m2ts also where it didn't work and changing it to .vob or .mpg did. I'm just afraid some n00bs might think mkv2vob doesn't work if they choose .m2ts or .mp4 file extension and the file doesnt play.

.m2ts has worked for me when doing tv eps that are just remuxed to avc (no transcoding) and played from a fat32 ext. usb hdd so i dont know if its the usb hdd factor or that they weren't transcoded that allows the .m2ts extension to work in those instances but it might also be just TVersity didn't like the other extensions and why they didnt work.

once copied to the ps3 hdd they might have but i like to test it first streaming from pc via tversity before i then copy it to the ps3 hdd. Like with this recent transcoded 1080p x264 (it was an old one done improperly@ L5.1 so i knew it would need to be but chose it anyway over the 720p x264 with ac3 version which would have been easier, heh) Also, I know sometimes a non transcoded file will show up on the ps3 via tversity as an mpeg-2 or something and then once copied to the ps3 its properly labeled as an AVC.

Anyway for the .ts, I hope just choosing the first .ts will work. Does it need to transcode .ts files to work on ps3? I would think not and ps3 used to play .ts files at one point i think. I left it as mpeg-2 encoding which seems to work best and fastest and no less quality then the other encoding options (just larger file size which i dont mind)

My popcorn hour plays .ts files and in fact sometimes for x264 mkv that dont play properly on the pch (usually due to improper encoding like higher then L4.1 h.264 video and higher then 4 or 5 ref frames) can be muxed to .ts (10-15 min for 2hr 1080p mkv file) and work perfectly on the popcorn hour.

But, for now I have my pch in slightly secondary room and screen as its still a bit buggy and not everything always works though there is always fw updates. So for now i still prefer the ps3 (over 360 also) as my video playback device of choice even though the pch actually plays more file types and supports subs on/off etc.

I guess I could have used a different program to just join these .ts files into one to play on my PH but i forgot which program I have somewhere can do that and I wanted to see how mkv2vob joined them and what type of file it makes for ps3. and this way I will be able to watch in my main fam room on larger tv (where the ps3 is) with wife as its something she will want to see. While my pch is in basement home theatre with slight smaller screen (used mostly for 360 playing) and used more for stuff that she isnt interested in seeing. Believe it or not the ps3 is actually more dependable with video playback then the pch. Once through mkv2vob I know that the file will play on ps3 99% of the time while on the pch its a little testing and playing around with and kind of hit or miss with playback that I can't subject my wife to. When she sits down to watch a movie with me, I have to know its going to work properly with full ff/rw, seek, pause, resume functions and the pch has sporadic results with those functions as well depending on the file type and has no resume feature at all (though many have requested this so its prob coming in a future fw)

Ah, I now see that mkv2vob finished joining the .ts files into one and that it doesn't need transcoding. Its now muxing I'm assuming the now joined one .ts file into an avc?

Again to play on pch I could have skipped this part and just used a prog that joins the .ts file but this was nice to test and actually this way the output avc file will play in both rooms on both the ps3 and popcorn hour.

I haven't seen the .ts option talked about much but this really is a great feature/ability of mkv2vob so you can view .ts files on your ps3.

A lot of tv is ripped directly to .ts (especially 1080i stuff it seems) In fact I think many 720p x264 tv eps are made from that 1080i .ts file. The 1080i .ts file is considerably larger then the 720p x264 mkv of the same episode but supposedly is therefore better quality even though it is always debated whether 1080i is better then 720p and usually most say 720p is better though it also depends on what you are playing it on and its deinterlacer vs upconvert capabilities.

I will have to test a 1080i .ts file vs. a 720p x264 mkv of the same episode on both the ps3 (.ts and .mkv muxed to avc) and pch (raw .ts and .mkv file) to see if any difference and ultimately it probably wont be enough to justify the larger file size of the 1080i .ts over the 720p x264 mkv of the same 60 min. tv ep.

Maybe mkv2vob will take that large 1080i .ts file and mux it to a smaller avchd file for ps3, not sure.

But especially for files that come as multiple .ts files, it is really a nice feature that mkv2vob can join them for you so you dont have to use another program first and then proceeds to make it a file playable on ps3 (and i'm assuming most .ts files dont need to be transcoded)

mkv2vob used to not even accept .ts files let alone join them so it really has come a long way. Enjoy.

For some reason it encodes it fine and gives me a proper sized output file (about 4,836,252kb against original 4,583,920, seems normal so far). It shows up on the PS3 with the MP2 sign next to it, click Play/Enter and it just dosnt start for some reason.

Allsettings are the same in mkv2vob as every other movie so far (BTW the smaple of the above movie worked though ?).

I have a similiar wish/suggestion. right now, if you choose the dvd5 split-size you end up with a file of 4,27 gb in size, in older versions it were the full 4,37 gb available on a dvd5, is it possible to change that back to the correct 4,37 gb ? sometimes this 100 mb per dvd make the difference between 2 or 3 dvds to burn.

Hi,

great app - helped me a lot on many files for my PS3 already.

Some proposals for future enhancements if you don´t mind:
- There should be a way to abort a action in progress. Right now you have to kill the task and the background task

- As you already provide a progress bar, it would be nice to add a % figure to it, along with an estimated time until finish

- I would appreciate a log file where I can see what is going on, maybe add a "log" tab?

- It would be good to be able to know on what basis the decision to transcode (or not) is made. Currently I have some files that get transcoded and some don´t, and I can find out why ...

The new split function might make odd filesizes but it splits safely at the keyframes.

The old split function just cut at the 4.37gb mark without caring if it was in the middle of a frame, sometimes this resulted in the next segment file not playing at all (corrupted data displayed on ps3).

If you can still get the 1080p x264, try that. its kind of old though and the only 1080p release of it. The 1080p mkv of Equilibrium didn't play on popcorn hour. Usually muxing to .ts works for play on the PH when the mkv doesn't but still didnt' with this file.

Letting mkv2vob transcode it to an mpeg-2 though worked and played perfect on ps3 so that what i ended up doing.

Im surprised your having trouble with the 720p version though. I figured the reason the 1080p was giving me problems was cus it was old and not encoded properly and being 1080p is sometimes more problems but i just wanted the 1080p version.

Thansk for the reply Quarte. I am a bit surprised myself regarding this file thats for sure, as i have done others that are 1080P and not had a problem.

I thnk read somewhere in this 60odd page thraed about .EVO files not working properly for some reason and have a look at the source SOURCE........: Equilibrium.HD-DVD.1080p.H264.DDPlus.5.1.EVO maybe that has something to do with it.

As for your idea about mkv2vob doing it to MPG2 that's what i thought i was doing.

Output File Extension is on mpg
Transcoding Codec is on MPEG-2(fast)

Would you sugest then a different setting. Maybe Xvid for the Transcoding Codec. Any ideas would be great, as i dont really want to add another 6-12gigs to the HDD:).

i have a weird problem.

I have a file that is a AC3 mkv file and mkv2vob will start muxing (it doesnt need to be transcoded, just remuxed) and it will get all the way up to about 90% and then MKV2VOB just stops converting the rest. No errors, i looked at the video and its perfect except the last 15 minutes are missing. I am under vista and i have tried it on 2 different PCs

i am still having problems with this. Its multiple files now. What can I do?

Hi again. I have a slight problem.

So far ALL my encodes with mk2vob have woked flawlessly except when i tried to do Equilibrium. For some reason it encodes it fine and gives me a proper sized output file (about 4,836,252kb against original 4,583,920, seems normal so far). It shows up on the PS3 with the MP2 sign next to it, click Play/Enter and it just dosnt start for some reason.

Allsettings are the same in mkv2vob as every other movie so far (BTW the smaple of the above movie worked though ?).

If you search the thread you'll notice me and another member had a discussion about Equilibrium.

When we tried to play it all we got was a black screen.

I fixed this by using mkvtoolnix to cut 31 seconds off the beginning of the movie, and running my newly created MKV through MKV2VOB.

You may need to force transcoding off in the options.

I don't know if cutting 31 seconds is actually needed, the process of remuxing the MKV might be all that is needed - However a few months ago when we figured out how to get Equilibrium working, we cut 31 seconds off the intro.

- bug fixed: Issue with muxing PGS stream from several source files (i.e. append mode) fixed.

Looks like it might be worth going to 1.7.6b if it fixes issues with h264 streams!

i tried running as admin - tried compatibility mode - i tried to just exract the content from the exe and run the mkv2vob.exe but then it says "error getting mkv info"

pls help - i really need this cool prog up n running :) thx in advance

i have one more question - since the new version doesnt work for me i am still running an older one which uses h264info for level changing to 4.1. this takes an awful amount of time. i didnt get why the prog did not just change one byte - my own tool did the level change in like 20ms. or does h264info do a compliance check?

I had the same thing and all it was, is that there wasnt enough space on the HDD. If i understand correctly you need space for the Finished file and atleast a similar amount for the Temp Transcode.

@Audioboxer. I grabbed that little program. How do you take 30sec's out of the beginning. I see all the file splittling options etc, just not sure how to delete the first 30sec's.

I have been searching for a way to create mini Hd-DVDs. The last step is to author the files into an HD-DVD format.

All current programs that do this automatically re-encode the files to 1920X720 MPG2 or AVC at 14000Kbps or higher. The finished folders have VOBs, not EVOs,k but are recognized by HD-DVD players as HD.

With that said, would I be able to use this tool to create the VOBs and then place them into the compilation, replacing the ones created by the comercial programs? (or use these files to author a basic DVD with the various free dvd authoring progs out there?)

i have the last version of mkv2vob 2.2.2, and i tried to install in my computer and i received a message "fatal error occurred", and i can't install it, also i tried to unrar it, and then run mkv2vob.exe, or to open with winrar and then run mkv2vob.exe, and it loads. but when i load a *.mkv and i select add file. i received a message "error getting mkv info!" i have windows vista.

i agree, but i converted that same rip using mpeg2 and it filled up two dvd9's. personally, i would much rather take a dvd9 mkv and fit it all on one dvd9 so that i dont have to get up and switch it in the middle of the movie. and thank you for taking the time to make the comparison. however, could you post two different pictures from frames that have more colors (i know the matrix is green) but this would allow a more in depth comparison thanks again

yigal33DTS has always been supported but only from a Blu-ray (BDMV or AVCHD) or DVD, this is still the case

But I still have a movie that when I transcode it in x264 the output file is very small (2,4 MB).
