View Full Version : mkv2vob: New App to Remux MKV x264/AC3 which play on PS3

downloaded elizabeth x264 720p, transcoded into x264 into one 4,75GB VOB file with subs. Burned into DL media.
All went well to PS playback except the 5 last minutes. PS3 reported corrupted data. The same DL media in the PC played without problem (included 5 last minutes).
Since you are recording to dual later media and you are reporting corruption occuring in the last 5 minutes...
I wonder is it possible that it could be the burner and/or media? Do you know where the software is inserting the layer break? If it is burning as much as possible onto the first layer (4.35GB) and then burning the remainder on the second layer, then my theory could well be true.
The fact that the PC read it without a problem also makes me think it could be the drive. The drive that burnt the media usually has the best chance of reading it again. It is with stand alone players that the problems usually exist.
Burning dual layer discs can sometimes be a tedious task and some older burners don't handle this job too well.

the drive is a plextor (aka nec) 800. It's 3 days old ;)
I'm thinking the same thing, that the drive could read the file after the second layer while PS3 couldn't because of a bad media and/or writing method. On the other hand i used nero scanning to scan the media, and it was just fine.
If i choose to transcode with split method, then the second file will be <=400MB and that's annoying :P But assuming that i will use the split method, will the second splitted file be correct with the subtitles synchronized?

3r1c,
You never responded to my question:
The problem is the FAT32 split option creates files that are 3900 MB.
I want to use Kingston/Sony/PNY/ 4GB USB sticks that are actually 3790 MB.
The files do not fit.
Will a future release of MKV2VOB have a custom file size?
OR:
A 3790 MB split option?
Thank you.:thanks:

I'm still thinking that it could be the media or software. Nero will see it as fine because your PC drive has no problem reading it as you've already mentioned. We need to work out what is causing the problem with the PS3.
Can you specify which software you are using to burn? Also the brand of media? Is it + or - media?
If it isn't too much trouble for you, I would recommend trying a different type of media. First of all, if you are using DVD-DL, try DVD+DL. Using good quality media can also help a lot. I always use Verbatim and they always provide a quality reliable burn.

You're right about the nero report (same drive, good specs)
i used nero to burn the vob (i should use imgburn thought...) in a DVD+R DL media and booktype as DVD-ROM. The media was a local Greek brand and maybe that was the cause of the problem (althought i haven't had any issues with this media on other DVD DL movies).
Will try with verbatim in slow speed and come back with results. Thank you VERY much for replying.

s_kound, you are welcome to my help but I am not 100% sure that I am on the right track. The suggestion I offered sounds like the most logical answer to me though.
I have an idea for you to test if it is the clip or the media.
Split the VOB file through mkv2vob or whichever application you prefer, load the second part onto a flash drive, iPod, or external hard drive (if you have any of these). Test it out to see how it plays...
If you don't have a flash drive, you could sacrifice a single layer DVD for the second part of the split for testing purposes. It will still cost less than buying more DL media.

A common problem is burning DL media at 8X , 6X or even 4 X when the local brand of media is really only capable of supporting a 2X burn DL media that the PS3 will not complain about.(in some cases but most burns were at 4X since burning at 8X even after verification produces coasters as far as the PS3 goes).
Just my luck?
My preferred option is to use an 8 GB memory stick with two formated sections under FAT32 that give me 3790 MB per section.
However.
The program MKV2VOB produces sections at 3900MB rendering the USB 8GB memory stick option useless(even for 16GB USB sticks since the PS3 is unable to read NTFS formated sticks).
I can not be the only guy who just wants to burn to an 8 GB memory stick and avoid all of the hassles of burning to disc.

What transcoding codec are you using?
I've just re-read your question. My settings were: x264 with VOB extension. No subs, no overscan compensation, boosting AAC/DTS volume. Any news on the file I've uploaded?

Some updates to TSmuxer.
Don't know if anything will help MKV2VOB?
* Version 1.7.2(b)
- Issue with demuxing PGS to SUP format fixed.
* Version 1.7.1(b)
- Bug fixed: Now pulldown info correctly processed.
- Ability to remove pulldown info from stream added. All video codecs are supported: H.264, VC-1, MPEG2.
- Some small bug fixes and improvements. Also tsMuxeR package size is decreased and dependings to other libraries have been removed.

heres what you wanna do to make an avchd
the only thing mkv2vob can do for you is make sure the output file is playable on a ps3. therefore, use mkv2vob to output to a .m2ts. export the m2ts as blu-ray structure using tsremux and burn to a dvd using udf 2.5 settings. HOWEVER, this will only produce a good video (unless you consider flashing green lines on the top and bottom of the screen good) if your resolution is exactly 1280x720 or 1920x1080.
if the video is a different size, it must be reencoded using some software im too busy and not ocd enough to care about to give it the black crop bars.

Thanks,
I know this has nothing to do with mkv2vob, but does anyone knows how to mux subtitles into divx for files bigger than 4GB? I ask this since the only good program I know capable of doing a good job is AVIAddXSub, but it does only handle AVI 1.0 files, thus having the 4GB limit. Once it goes past this limit it reports an error and can't create the DivX file...
I already know of DivX Mux Gui and Sub2DivX, but none of them create a good output (Sub2DivX only handles NTSC and PAL inputs, and DivX Mux Gui creates too small and screen-center based subtitles).
Any help is appreciated.

You say that if you split you end up with a 400mb file.. well the mkv2vob uses the byte size from the dvd specifications, it sounds to me like you are overburning the disc and the ps3 wont read it.

Ok.... Why have you got 2 partitions on the memory stick? That is not needed at all. FAT32 specifies that a single file can not exceed 4GB but that is not the partition limit. They are different things.
Format one partition (approx 7600MB) and everything will be ok.

It's not possible.
The DivX media format container is engineered based on the older AVI v1.0 container. This container format has a 4GB limit (as you already mentioned :)).
The best application I found was AVIaddXsubs (as you said). When you say it can only handle AVI 1.0, what did you mean? AVIaddXsubs can input avi 2.0 files but as I mentioned above the .divx container is a wrapper of the AVI 1.0 container, so output is unfortunately limited to 4GB, in any DivX media format application.
With AVIaddXsubs you can enter a custom resolution and adjust the on screen subtitle position. I had a 720p (1280 x 544) movie which is an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. I even managed to get the subtitles to display on the black part of the screen (where the borders would have been). I entered 1280 x 720 as the subtitle resolution and 700 as the position. This places the subtitles on line 700, which is below the picture! Also, if you enter a font size of 24 or 26, I found that produced the best results. :)
Note: The way the subtitles appear on the DivX media player on your PC is not always the same as the PS3 will play them.
The DivX media format container is engineered based on the older AVI v1.0 container. This container format has a 4GB limit
Thanks for clarification :)
But, are you sure it's not possible to create AVI 2.0 in DivX container? I'm asking this because of a note in AVIAddXSubs's homepage stating:
AVIAddXSubs (at the moment) creates AVI 1.0 files. AVI 1.0 files cannot be greater than 4GB. So the program cannot be used for files bigger than 4GB.
What does this "at the moment" means? Could it be program's fault and future development could solve it, or that it is waiting for some sort of DivX specifications to change?
Anyway, many thanks :)

It means that avi over 4gb requires AVI 2.0 and AVIAddXSubs does not have support for 2.0 yet.

As I said earlier, it is the DivX media format that was engineered using AVI 1.0 as it's fundamental structure (maybe it's a licensing issue with MS). It is not only AVIaddXSubs that is limited to the DivX media format containing AVI 1.0 as it's core. I have researched this previously. So I can not see this changing at all. The DivX Ultra profile has already been implemented. If they were to redesign the DivX media format, they would need to create another certification level (maybe something like DivX Ultra HD).
I have TMPG DVD Author 3, which allows complete DivX media format authoring... Menu's, chapter points, multiple audio tracks, switchable subtitles etc. The interface shows a bar with the maximum output size as 4.0GB, so as you author your DivX media project you can keep a watch on what the output will be. This is commercial software so it would be safe to assume that they have acquired all the neccessary licensing from DivX to implement the DivX media format authoring to it's fullest potential. As you can see, unfortunately it is limited to 4GB.

Now I get it!
Its all fixed since now I format the 8Gb stick to NTFS to transfer files that are larger than the 4 gig limit from my desktop to my laptop.
Then I re-format my 8gb usb drive to fat32 to transfer all of the file pieces created by MKV2VOB to my PS3.
And its great!
But I have another question:
I have an 4.37 GB file thats a Divx5 with 5.1 DTS sound(mediainfo) in an .avi container.
Will using AUTOMKV to turn the .avi container/divx5 file into an MKV file work?(with 5.1 DTS sound).
Then I plan to use MKV2VOB to mux the audio to a PS3 friendly file output.
Thank you.

Hi,
I've got a lot of mkv-movies with two languages.
demuxing them and putting them in another container on my own, made them playable on pc but sadly not on the ps3.
I've even tried adding another language to a mkv which I ran through mkv2vob (and which was playable on the ps3).
but that didn't work either.
is there a possibility that there will be a feature for a second language?
thanks,

mkv2vob will not accept a mkv with divx/xvid video, and its not supported in the m2ts container anyway.
The video must be h264 only.
Also to the ppl who said DTS is not working, I can find no problem with it, it works fine, certainly none of the commands mkv2vob uses have changed, the only thing changed in the last version is new tsmuxer, try the older one, or the latest one.

Is the quality affected in anyway by the "output file extension" selection?
Just wondering which I should be selecting to play on my ps3? Currently I select the "vob" choice.
Any reason I should select a different choice like "mp4" perhaps?

There is no difference.
Use whatever works with your streaming software, or on a dvd/usb/hdd does not matter.
some streaming servers (eg. tversity) will try to transcode vob into mpeg2, so "mpg" extension works best.

In regards to your DivX AVI, you do not need to go to as much trouble as you just mentioned.
Just load the AVI into VirtualDub, select "Direct Stream" for the video, then go to the audio settings and select AC3 5.1 channel 640Kbs as your audio compression format (provided you have an AC3 ACM codec installed). Output new AVI file and this will be compatible with the PS3 (with firmware v2.20).

Here is the result of the transcoded file using the default mkv2vob settings, it also plays fine on ps3
Yes, the audio is fine whatever I try. I originally used x264 with .VOB extension (it's mkv2vob after all :p). I can see you used the MPEG2 + mpg extension. And it worked with TVersity indeed. However, the .MOV file size was 3 times the original. Which means I'll end up with a 7.5Gb file if I begin with a 2.5Gb one (in this case, worse with others).
Have you tried to use the x264 codec + .VOB extension and see what you get? I got a file 3 times <smaller> than the original one and heavily pixelated image. The trancoding is naturally doing something to the video stream (downsampling it, I guess). Could you try to force-transcode it to the same "resolution"?
I reckon what we could try to figure out is why the x264/VOB combination is not working for this particular release (and possibly others) while it works so well with others (in some instances only remuxing is necessary). You speculated it could be the level. Doesn't mkv2vob change it automatically before carrying on?

Please dont randomly change the settings if you do not understand what they do, i set them that way for a reason.
the reason is tversity thinks vob files are dvd video and will try to transcode them, if you are using a streaming server you must make sure your server software is passing through the files made by mkv2vob without doing anything to them such as transcoding.
there is no difference between the vob and mpg files made by mkv2vob, they are bit-for-bit identical, only the extension is renamed.

I had the same result when I selected the 264 for transcode instead of MPEG2 - I got a tiny little file that was pixalated into garbage. I am currently trying a manual reencode with those files - using MEGUI to transcode from AVC to AVC - I generally just select the PS2-XBOX360 preset - then change the average bitrate to something like 10,000k and the max to 19,200k, unselect re-size in the script creator and leave it alone for about 12 hours (quad core 2.8 Xeon) and it works ok, then remux into an m2ts, which the PS3 appears to prefer to VOB (though vob is still fine, unline mp4 which appears to be somewhat euchered since firmware 2.20).

Well, I thought mkv2vob would do that for us. What I meant by "doesn't work" is that mkv2vob is not able to convert (and transcode) it to VOB on its own, like it did for a couple of other files.

"Randomly change"? I can't help but imagining a monkey randomly hitting the keyboard and pressing "Add file" in your app.
I understand what it is supposed to do (not necessarily how) and it does NOT work. Period. Your app, as it is today, is not capable of fully identifying certain bizarre MKV files and do what it is supposed to do: convert it to VOB. I am just trying to help everybody getting it to work ALL THE TIME by pointing out one counter-example. Therefore, please try to show a modicum of courtesy. It is not the first time I see you being "assertive" to people before. Just keep it professional.
the reason is tversity thinks vob files are dvd video and will try to transcode them, if you are using a streaming server you must make sure your server software is passing through the files made by mkv2vob without doing anything to them such as transcoding.
Please don't randomly make assertions you have no natural way of verifying. My "Destinarion Directory" is set to <never transcode> in TVersity. The problem lies with mkv2vob. It cannot trancode the original video stream to x264 without producing a highly pixelated image (even though it works with MPEG2, at the high cost of inflating file size three fold).
So, shall we keep focus at the task at hand?
3r1c
4th April 2008, 00:38
If it works with mpg file, but not with vob file (which are 100% identical, i made the program, i do know what it is doing) then obviously the problem is tversity is transcoding it.
i use tversity myself, i KNOW it tries to trancode vob based on the filename.
mkv2vob IS DOING what its supposed to, read the mouse over description on the extension, its a file EXTENSION, not file FORMAT.
by "randomly change" i mean you are just changing the extension to vob for no reason, without reading the description of what it does, if you had read the description we wouldnt be here.

unselect re-size in the script creator and leave it alone for about 12 hours (quad core 2.8 Xeon)
Nice job, (very) patient man/woman... :)
What about file size? Was it close to the original?

The resulting file size is THREE TIMES SMALLER in the VOB created by your app. x264 is good but it does not work miracles (specially not when it does h264 -> h264). Therefore, your app is encoding it in the wrong way somehow. Had the file size been the same or close (like it is for the MKV files mkv2vob is indeed capable of transcoding/encoding) and still I got the pixelated image, your TVersity argument wouldn't be as vacuous as it currently is.
BTW, you've just said it yourself: there's a bug in the x264 encoding. At least this discussion led to something fruitful.
Good job in finding the bug. Looking forward to running the new version.

well you quoted the rapidshare link with the sample where someone posted the audio wasnt working, so i though you were talking about the audio not the video.
