if you set it to "never transcode" there is no way at all that you got a mpeg2 file.
the slowbess was because of trancoding DTS audio.

how?

what did you use? mkv2vob still starts transcoding when selected to auto and seems to still transcode andmake a non working mpeg-2 file when i selected never transcode on an L4.1 1080p mkv file.

I put it through h264info and then remuxed it to a .ts file with tsMuxer and it plays great on a PS3.

I was able to convert effortlessly The Matrix 1080p and 310 To Yuma 1080p using the auto transcode feature.
310 to Yuma was a 10gb rip, and after the conversion (which i think transcoding; i cant tell im in college where i get them and i watch and convert these at home on my ps3) the 310 fit perfectly on two dual layer dvds
Ive been using this software since Christmas and have converted roughly 10 720p and 1080p movies, burnt them, and watched them perfectly.

yeah using tversity it showed up as an mpeg-2 but then once copied to the ps3 internal it showed as an AVC and a moving video thumbnail so i thought it would work but it doesn't play.

It may have been because I was doing the same file using auto and then ran a second instance of mkv2vob and selected never transcode. that may have been the problem, i guess i should only run one instance this time and try selecting never transcode again.

ok but others are saying you can just use one prog being the topic here of mkv2vob and select never transcode for L4.1 1080p x264 and it will make an AVC file that plays on ps3 without transcoding like you have to for most 1080p x264.

funny how many of us initially requested the option to always transcode so we would get ff/rw when before the remuxe avc .vob didnt have that. Now we need to select never transcode for L4.1 1080p x264.

Maybe new version can detect if it is L4.1 and then not transcode as some L4.1 1080p x264 dont say that it is except maybe in the info and you never know when you could get one wrongly labeled as L4.1 but isn't , if mkv2vob had the ability to detect L4.1 and allow one to still select auto then we wouldnt have to play a guessing game and possibly waste time making a file that ends up not working.

(also as a side note, could you ppl with hdbits start upping these L4.1 1080p x264 to ng's) :thanks:

You dont have to select "never transcode" on the L4.1
That guy just doesnt understand that DTS will still be transcoded, the option only applies to the video.

Next version will mux DTS without transcoding.

confused. so for L4.1 1080p x264 I dont have to choose never transcode? is it okay that I did? because previously I tried both auto and never transcode and neither the transcode to mpeg-2 via auto nor the avc created from selecting never transcode worked.

i did run 2 instances at the same time on the same mkv though as i said previously. did it this time with just never transcode and about to see if it works. if it didn't i guess i can try again auto but at this point i'm either thinking its a file that can't be done with mkv2vob or i sholdn't have downgraded the txMuxer version in mkv2vob .

dont know what else it could be.

L4.1 wont be transcoded by auto mode.
So selecting auto or never will both give the same result.
Im just saying that it is not necessary to select "never" like one person said, mostly because its a bad idea to get in the habbit of selecting never when its not needed.
Unless you are splitting files, do not select never.

Are you saying this L4.1 file wont play?

EDIT: Dont run mkv2vob more the once at the same time on the same file.
It uses the same temp name for both, thats probably what messed it up.

Do it again once and select automatic.

ok i understand now but I did it again once and selected never transcode and it still made an mpeg-2 according to ps3 but one that doesn't play. transferring it now to the ps3 hdd and if its same as last time then it will then show as an AVC with a moving video thumbnail once on the ps3 hdd but still wont play.

now i'll try doing it again selecting auto but basically at this point i'm just wasting time trying the same things i've already done over only to get the same result.

the only thing left it could be is the fact that I overwrote the tools folder with the tsxMuxer 1.2.0 files as someone recommened fixed some problems mkv2vob was having with sync etc.

i guess for this last try i'll just reinstall mkv2vob 1.5.3 (leaving whatever version tsMuxer it uses) and try auto again but i think it just doenst' like the file. But yet others mentioned this same movie L4.1 release (of which there is only one so i know its the same) and got it working. of course one guy said he didnt use mkv2vob but its annoying that here i thought L4.1 was a way to a quicker smaller avc file (instead of longer to transcode and larger mpeg-2) on ps3 from a 1080p mkv.

instead i jsut keep wasting time using mkv2vob on the file for it to make a non working file. maybe L4.1 1080p mkv aren't so good afterall? what gives?

edit: yep same result. selecting never transcode on "We.Own.the.Night.2007.BluRay.1080p.DTS.L4.1.x264-CtrlHD.mkv" results in what ps3 labels as an mpeg-2 file (even though i selected never transcode) when using tversity and doesn't play. Then copying it to the ps3 hdd, it then is labeled as an AVC with a moving video thumbnail but still doesn't play.

Now i'm trying all over again this time selecting auto but all it does is take longer then selecting never transcode and result is still a non working file. I thought the L4.1 was going to make it quicker and easier for 1080p x264 on ps3 especially using mkv2vob but it seems just a lot of wate of time making non working files and were still better off getting the 720p AC3 version of a file which is a shame because for ppl with both 360 and ps3 and relying between the 2 of those for video playback on larger tv (as opposed to small pc monitor) yes there is wmv which plays great on 360 (no sound on ps3 for some reason yes even with wma audio enabled) but the problem is wmv rels come sparingly and come late sometimes never (or only or at least first with hardcoded nl subs which is frustrating) also for awhile were mostly 720p (for the stupid reason to accomodate ppl burning to dvd9 even though many used ext. hdd [hfs+] or stream and would have prefered 1080p)

so at least with ps3 you can make use of the quicker to come out and larger selection of x264 but seems it was safest to stick with 720p ac3 files which defeated the purpose of an alternative to 720p wmv on 360. Yes mkv2vob could make a working mpeg-2 of many 1080p x264 but the long transcode time, 50% larger file size and especially the files that after said long transcode etc. made a file that didnt work properly with either out of sync audio problems or jumpy skippy video like it was in fast forward as i recently exeprienced.

now L4.1 1080p x264 comes along figuring that will be the answer to quick easier 1080p x264 on ps3 but the first one i'm trying (over and over) is just causing mkv2vob to waste time making a non working file. ;_;

Hi, to everyone having a problem using mkv2vob (or GOTSent) to transcode their MKVs... yes there is a problem at the moment with mkv2vob . The problem is actually easily fixed by down grading tsMuxeR back down to 1.2.0 (so problem is with the current version of tsMuxeR). All you have to do is go to http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=134104 and download version 1.2.0, unzip it over the files in the tools folder. This will allow you to transcode all the files that the current set up refuses to do. Before this app was working fine but I was also having problems transcoding MKVs, including old MKVs that mkv2vob used to do fine. Tracked down the problem to the version of tsMuxeR eing used. Copying over the newest version still allows you to keep 5.1 ac3 and the ability to fast forward. Last couple I've done have been fine and noticed no audio out of sync after fast forwarding.

You can see one file working here in the following pics...
http://download.cliche-corp.co.uk/doom9/doom9.20080213a.jpg
http://download.cliche-corp.co.uk/doom9/doom9.20080213b.jpg

This file didn't work before, but worked once I downgraded. I would have posted this sooner but I only upgraded on Friday and so had to wait 5 days before posting :)

Also, 3r1c, any chance of source or if you want a hand let me know. I could try and help to add features as would be cool to be able to do a batch process of files or even nominate a temp directory of you own.Oh, before I forget, this is an awesome little app :thanks:

seems like this may have been bad advice and using the older version of tsMuxer causes mkv2vob to make non working file especially with L4.1 1080p mkv.

maybe there are too many chefs in the kitchen on this thread

carlosroman101
15th February 2008, 10:38
That might seems to be true (not tried with any 1080p content). Only suggested it for those that were having trouble with mkv2vob and who previoulsy were having no problems creating vob files for the PS3. So maybe the advice should be if your having trouble try downgrading tsMuxeR to see if this helps. I still stand by the advice as the current tsMuxeR will only find the ac3 track in one file out of 20 I tested, while the old one found it every time :)

Im working on a new version with some new features but it will be a while before its ready.

here is what i have planned

- convert multiple files
- convert entire directory
- rar file support
- audio language selection
- subtitles
- auto file splitting (fit on dvd5 etc...)
- xbox 360 compatibility
- check for updates automatically

If you get the subtitles to work i'll make a statue!!!:p

I'm getting the same thing as Quatre.

If I watch the whole process, I can see that ffmpeg kicks in encodes the video to mpeg2.

Quatre, did you do the "keep broken files" trick with winrar? I did. Maybe that's why? The MKV is only 95 meg and not the whole file... ??

Also, when I do this manually, tsRemuxer shows this in the info window: Warning! Frame delimiters are absent at H.264 stream. Auto fix it.
If mkv2vob is looking for the Frame delimiters I assume that would make it want to transcode the video...?

Another 1080p L4.1 x264 flick has been posted.

"American.Gangster.2007.1080p.HDDVD.DTS.L4.1.x264-CtrlHD".

I'm downloading the sample of the file and going to run it through MKV2VOB to see what results I get.

Same thing. ffmpeg is running right now....

Samples will always transcode in auto mode.

mkv2vob reads the header in the first few bytes of the file to determine if it needs to be transcoded, and samples is usually
a cut from the middle of the full file without the header.

Using the first rar usually works, however if the audio stream is first track in the mkv you might get a first rar only containing audio.

hi, first post here (took a week before i could!)
first of all thanks very much for an extremely useful little app!

when i convert sme 1gb files i have (the usual 42 min tv shows), they will usually convert no problem, with some requiring extra conversion to make it compatible for my ps3..
but when i try to convert some larger MKVs i have (2gb, 4gb some 720p movies) then i find that the audio codec (a_aac) is not supported..

i have tried using gotsent,mkvextract/mkvmerge,Yamb,mp4box.... but once i have extracted the audio and video, neither application will merge the files back to an mp4..

does anyone one know of a way to get round this?
or even another application that supports this codec.

any help or suggestions come greatly appreciated! thanks.

I have rip for me KingKong in 1080p. Is an 12GB mkv movie with AC3 sound. Today i have to essay to convert the movie with mkv2vob. I have try the "Never Transcode" method and the movie works perfectly. :) No stutter or async in 1080p AAC. Is after all possible to play an 1080p Movie without transcode to mpeg2.

I did a search and not a lot of people are asking about mkv files encoded with aac 5.l sound. mkv2vob won't work on these files. Gotsent can make the file compatible with the PS3, in mp4 format, but my HTiB can't decode AAC.

What's the best way to change AAC to AC3? I've tried demuxing with mkvextract. Then I use DAudioK to change the AAC to an AC3 file. But the AC3 file is always messed up. Anyone have a quick and easy way to make an MKV with AAC 5.1 audio into an MKV with AC3 5.1?

I recently came upon tsmuxer and thought that avchd movies would be the step up from just making vobs (although you could put those in DVD file format).

I made myself a Across The Universe 720 1 GB sample from the beginning of the file and went through the works of changing the level in tsmuxer and then making it into bluray format in \BDMV\STREAM\00001.m2ts. Burnt as AVCHD with UDF 2.5 and everything and it didnot work in my ps3 fw210.

I have burnt many mkv2vob movies to dvds, some have been doubled in size 310 to Yuma 1080p) and others have just increased a little to not fit on one DVDR (the Bournes 720p)

WITHOUT READING ANYTHING I JUST POSTED (not yelling, just trying to get 3r1c's attention), I basically want to know what causes mkv2vob to know which files to transcode because it seems that this is independent of the whether the h264 level is 4.1 or not.

To convert aac to ac3 I do the following -

1. Use MKVExtractGUI to extract h264 video and aac audio from mkv file.
2. Use faad2 to convert aac to a 6ch wav file (faad -o outfile.wav infile.aac).
3. Use aften to convert wav to ac3 (aften -v 0 -readtoeof 1 -b 448 - input.wav output.ac3).
4. Use mkvmergegui to create mkv of h264 video and ac3 audio
5. Use mkv2vob to create vob from new mkv.

AVCHD is the same as blu-ray which has more restrictions which x264 currently does not meet.

mkv2vob already uses tsmuxer.
Just burn the file on a a DVD-R and it will play.

Thanks. I've seen this method, but I'd rather a program that does those steps in one shot. Have you seen DAudioK? You can change an AAC file to an AC3 in one shot. It uses AVISynth. But for some reason it doesn't always work.

There should be a more automatic way to get from AAC to AC3 because a lot of people must be running into this issue. My HTiB is fairly decent, but it can't decode AAC. What about you guys? And why are people releasing MKV's with AAC audio?

We Own the Night L4.1 1080p x264 causes mkv2vob to make a non working file every time whether you choose auto or never transcode.

Very frustrating considering it takes all that time to do it just to produce a non working file and even more so the fact that the L4.1 files were supposed to be the answer to the ability to have 1080p x264 files on ps3 without needing to do the lengthier transcode to the 50% larger mpeg-2 file.

i'd rather have that though then waste time repeatedly making a non working file.

I dont know what all this is about keep broken rar and other crap but the release par'd fine and should be good but i guess maybe that is part of the problme that there is something wrong with it. i'll just resort to 720p ac3 x264 for that movie and try another L4.1

yeah some idiot on the thread told ppl to overwrite mkv2vob with older version of tsMuxer (1.2.0 to be exact which is several versions back).

I thought I had tried it with the untouched latest version of mkv2vob but maybe I did it with the older version of tsMuxer in the tools folder. but before I thought it was something else so tried again before reinstalling so its just been a pain. hopefully it works and the lesson is to not have too many chefs in the kitchen so to speak.

ie. some ppl in the thread need to stop suggesting incorrect information and confusing ppl. instead make a suggestion/tip to the author and let him verify its working and tell others , otherwise be sure you are correct before posting misinformation and bad suggestions to ppl, that then make it seem like the authors prog is not working.

Watch calling other members idiots, you are violating forum rules.

Others are trying to help you and I know some persons are less technically oriented than others. you just have to take what they say with a grain of salt. If you do not want their help then pm 3r1c directly with your questions.

anyone else have trouble with video/audio speed? On some of my conversions the a/v will speed up for a sec. then stop and play normal that do it again and continue this process. Its not the whole movie but portions of it will do this.

Thanks for any help.

do your original mkv files have dts audio? and did you update to the latest mkv2vob?

How do you split the mkv files? I have tried several methods without succeding.

ok good point thankyou. i guess i was frustrated that I took someones advice that ended up being wrong and a major time waster. are you a forum mod? or just a normal member scolding others though? cus nothing wrong with giving someone a harsh reaction to the spreading of misinfo and making the prog and the author look bad but I guess it wasn't on purpose. again i was prob just frustrated by the huge waste of time because of it.

Yes, it seems like a few ppl have mentioned this. It happened to me on a 1080p file and its a shame because you think you have a working file but then through the movie the video speeds to what some ppl thought was like 2x and then back to normal only to do it again throughout the movie making it basically unwatchable.

so its a waste of a long 1080p transcode and large useless file that at first you think came out good upon first testing. luckily in my case when i went to sit down to watch it i had the 720p as backup as the 1080p with fast playing video spurts was unwatchable.

yes i think mine was a 1080p mkv with dts and i'm sure we were all using latest version when we got resulting mpeg-2 files with intermittent fast playing video/audio

Not a mod just warning you that I have seen others banned for doing this. Not a issue with me, just trying to see you not get in trouble.:sly:

ok thanks but i think you brought more attention to then anything as on its own it really wasn't that harsh.

anyway We.Own.the.Night.1080p.DTS.L4.1.x264.mkv (disclaimer: made myself, not a torrent)
still causes mkv2vob to make a non working file every single time.

luckily by the 10th try the wmv is now out and plays perfect on the 360.

haven't had good luck at all with this prog lately, first the across the universe 1080p x264 with the intermittent 2x ff playing video after taking ages to transcode to an mpeg-2 that ultimately is unwatchable and now this one that completes but creates a file that doens't work at all. and here L4.1 was suposed to be the answer to quick remuxed avc from 1080p mkv files.

guess not. and my prog and pc are fine and same files as everyone else that par check and mkv plays fine on the pc so its def something th mkv2vob prog is doing.

there is no uninstall for it so i've tried deleteing the whole mkv2vob directory and reinstall i guess its just bad luck that the last couple i've tried take all that time to produce a non working or unwatchable file making for a lot of wasted time.

Thats one of the ones I had problems with. Not all the files I have had this problem with are DTS, they are 1080p though. I usually just watch it through unless it is real bad and some have been that way. Thanks for the replies azyd and Quatre. I hope this gets worked out. I am still very happy I found this app.

Mkv2vob almost always has to reencode 1080p sources and uses ffmpeg to do so because they are encoded into mkv sources using 5.1 AVC OR with more than 4 frames per ref, I do not know how many more times we all can say this. the lvl 4.1 trick only seems to work for 720p sources I have yet to see a 1080p 5.1 or more than 4 frames per reference mkv work on a ps3 by just remuxing. Also if b-pyramid is used to encode the 1080p mkv (which many persons still do) then it will also cause problems with just remuxing.

Why would there be a uninstall it doesn't install in the first place? Just delete the directory and unzip the files again.

Just because a mkv plays on your pc is in no way any test that it will work on your ps3. It is nothing that the mkv2vob program is doing that makes them not play, more that ffmpeg when it transcodes has issues with the video or audio portion of the mkv. Remember mkv2vob is basically a automated gui front end for tools that already exist. 3r1c did not write tsmuxer, h264info, mkvextract and merge, ffmpeg, tranzcode, besweet etc. he just uses them to the best of thier ability. if any of them fall down due to a poorly made (corrupted or non standard) mkv file then I would blame the mkv you are downloading not this program.

"Mkv2vob almost always has to reencode 1080p sources"

ok but most of us were under the impression that the whole point of L4.1 1080p x264 was that they didnt have to be transcoded like other 1080p x264.

"I do not know how many more times we all can say this. the lvl 4.1 trick only seems to work for 720p sources I have yet to see a 1080p 5.1 or more than 4 frames per reference mkv work on a ps3 by just remuxing"

ok thankyou for clarifying this but actually this is the first i'm hearing so i dont know where all the other times were. In fact all i've been hearing was contradicting info that l4.1 1080p x264 could be remuxed. what is the point of L4.1 720p x264? most of them can already be remuxed it was the 1080p x264 that were the problem.

as far as the uninstall of mkv2vob, yes thats fine that there isn't i prefer it that way, its an unobtrusive program, i was just trying to narror down where the problems i was having was coming from and making sure that I had the previous version with old version of tsMuxer removed completely. again frustration due to trying several times and not being sure where the problem is, as well i have an eSata drive that seems to be going slower then usb and freezing up the mouse.

"Just because a mkv plays on your pc is in no way any test that it will work on your ps3"

yes i know I was just trying to explain that it wasn't a bad mkv though you went on later to imply that that could be the problem.

"Remember mkv2vob is basically a automated gui front end for tools that already exist. "

yes I do realize this, either way some of these mkv (which again isn't bad and plays properly on the pc) do not come out as a working file on ps3 after using mkv2vob (and the programs its uses) and we were just trying to figure out why

The L4.1 files are supposed to play without transcoding.
Its possible there is just something wrong with that file.

you could try to split the mkv first then run it through mkv2vob

I have tried using mkvtoolnix but having left it for over 12 hours it just sits there doing nothing, although my processor shows it to be running at 100%!!

Guess i am a bit stuck now....
