What software do you use to convert DTS to AC3 ?

I used a special build of foobar2000 + dts input + aften (ac3 output).

i resolved my problem. with mkvextract extracted the 2 treams and reconverted to L4.1 profile. with mkvmerge joined the 2. And with mkv2vob transcoded tp x264.mpg with portuguese subtitles.

The extension is just that, an extension

You choose the encoder in the other option (h264, mpeg2 or divx).

You don't need to tell me what an extension is. I made no reference to the elementary streams being encoded. I was referring to container formats. I understand that the GUI in mkv2vob specifies that it is only the extension you are selecting. I think it's a little misleading that that mkv2vob simply renames the extension as I was hoping that it would actually pack the streams into the chosen container. Anyone can change an extension. The question was directed at 3r1c, now please let him answer it.

You are right about the public forum part. However, it was still directed to 3r1c as he is the only one that can truly answer that question. Just a note, you also just posted a question directed to 3r1c. I also could offer help in your question but out of respect for who the question was directed at, I will leave it alone.

By telling me what an extension is, makes me think you consider me a nOOb. I can assure you I am not.

Put it this way naj, you are talking about DivX in mkv2vob. If you are considering to use mkv2vob for a DivX encode in the first place, I can guarantee you that I am more competent then you are when it comes to this sort of thing. I would not need an automated program to do my encoding. I would not use mkv2vob for this. I would only use it for it's muxing abilities. Since mkv2vob is using tsMuxeR to export m2ts and simply renaming the extension, I might as well continue to use tsMuxeR to mux as Roman's GUI offers more flexibility too (subtitle input, chapters, language ID, Blu-ray output etc.).

The temp and destination folders must be NTFS, if you later want to move it to a FAT32 drive this is ok, but during processing the program will need to create files more then 4gb (assuming your movie is this large).

In 720p video xvid bitrate is disabled, it uses whatever bitrate which is needed to match the quality of the source.
In 1080p it does 2 pass xvid (because ps3 stutters playing the unlimited rate that works with 720p).

Shayx, if you want no splitting then select "none".
Using blu-ray splitting will waste your cpu splitting files which is not actually being split.

I understand that mkv2vob does more than just mux. I already stated that I am only interested in it for it's muxing though. I still don't understand what the benefit is of changing the extension. Is it to fool the media player or streaming application that it is actually a different container format, when in actuality it is a m2ts file? I wouldn't think that people would need mkv2vob to handle this. I mean, changing the extension isn't considered complicated, is it? Regarding encoding, I would rather handle that with a more "hands on" type method. I can completely appreciate that others would really benefit from the encoding and muxing being done in one easy to use application and I must say you have done a great job implementing this. :)

In regards to the other points...

1. Yes subtitles do work in Blu-ray output, which is why I referred to Blu-ray authoring.
2. Yes it does. Whenever you select an audio stream or switchable subtitle (from Blu-ray output) the language is displayed on the screen.
3. Of course, but that is not a problem to me as the benefits of creating Blu-ray output far outweigh the benefits of cropping.

Some of the things authoring a Blu-ray disc (or AVCHD) will provide that a m2ts media file can not...

- DTS audio.
- Multiple audio streams.
- Switchable subtitles (the DivX media format can also offer this as of firmware v2.20).
- Language ID.
- Chapter points.
- FF/REW seems to work smoother and doesn't stick at all.

I also would like to know how you've automated this. I mean, I can load up a h264 stream in MediaInfoRaw to determine what encoding settings were enabled. From there I can see if it is compatible with the PS3 and/or stand alone Blu-ray player. However, I think it would be great to have a little application that you can just load a h264 file into and it says... "This is compatible with the PS3" or "This isn't compatible with the PS3". This would be very handy for those that are newer into the encoding scene. I think with the market that the PS3 attracts, you will find a lot of people would like to take advantage of the media formats it plays but have little or no experience in digital media manipulation and encoding.

There is certain movies in DTS that will just not work in MKV2VOB. This has been like this for quite a few builds - It's not 3r1cs fault but the applications he uses to convert DTS to AC3.

For the problematic movies, you'll need to convert to AC3 yourself, then run your newly muxed MKV file through MKV2VOB - You may need to select "never transcode" on this new MKV you created as sometimes MKV2VOB goes to transcode when it isn't needed,

from one of my older posts,

I've manually converted the DTS audio to AC3 by doing the following,

1) MKVextract used to seperate .DTS and Video (I used MKVextract GUI)
2) Tranzcode 0.4 to seperate DTS to 6 WAV mono channels (I used TranzGUI)
3) WAV to AC3 Encoder 1.1 to create 6 Channel AC3 (use MuxWizard under file to insert WAVS & then make sure you set the bitrate to 640 on the slider, then hit encode)
4) MKVmerge to create new MKV file of original video plus newly created AC3 track

To elaborate on the points, use mkvextractgui.exe to extract the DTS audio from your mkv.

You'll have a .dts file now.

Load tranzcode 0.4, open the dts file, set to 6 channel mono, then extract. You'll have 6 WAV files now.

Open Wav to AC3 endcoder and use muxwizard. After encoding you'll have a .AC3 file.

Open MKVmergeGUI, load the original MKV, uncheck the DTS audio, drag/open the AC3 file in MKVmerge, and check the AC3 audio. Then click mux.

You'll now have a new MKV file, with AC3 audio.

Run it through MKV2VOB and it will work!

Pretty easy to do, doesn't take long once you get it right.

By the way, download mkvtoolnix and install it from here - http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/ - Above rar is missing MKVmergeGUI.exe I think

im using mediainfo but always i see ''High@L5.1'' all videos.

im transcoding with through MKV2VOB and i can watch on ps3 this High@L5.1 videos.

But some High@L5.1 videos i cant watch ps3 cause im getting ''corrupted data''

So, i need a program for detect REAL H264 Video Level, cuz i think mediainfo is sux : )

would there be ANY chance of Blu-ray output? (even basic, just add black bars so it's the right resolution and DTS or AC3 audio)

Hmmm - after a couple of months of 'no problems' i converted 3 1080p files and they all show 'blocking' when i play them on the ps3...

not had this at all befor - i ran a test of a very high bitrate file i did a month or so back and there were no problems with that at all so i guess that could possible rule out network problems (my network is wired anyway).

will see how i get on with a few more files.

BTW, not sure i liked the 'auto-update' that mkv2vob did - sometimes i prefer to stick with older versions!

What do you mean by downsample? You want to lower the bitrate? I'm not sure if that would be adequate to reduce the size to fit onto a DVD-5.

For example, if you had a h264 stream + Dolby Digital @ 640Kbs, that was 4.35GB in a Matroska container. Then you used mkv2vob to remux (not re-encode) it would end up being about 4.63GB as the m2ts container adds about a 6% header increase.

Now let's say that you reduced that Dolby Digital stream to 384Kbs (anything lower than that is going to compromise too much quality in a 6 channel audio stream). That would effectively lower the total file size by about 120MB, still not enough for a DVD-5 unfortunately.

If you wanted to get that file small enough to fit onto a DVD-5, you would need to reduce the ac3 track to about 192Kbs, which would only be good enough for stereo really. Personally I don't see the point of having HD video and combining it with a stereo audio stream but it's completely your choice...

If you still want to do this...

1) Load the mkv file into tsMuxeR.
2) Demux the audio stream.
3) Use any of the available ac3 encoders to re-encode the audio (MeGUI + FFMPEG, BeSweet + BeLight or BeSweetGUI, Foobar2000 + Aften etc.).
4) Load the mkv file back into tsMuxeR, uncheck the original audio stream.
5) Load the new audio stream into tsMuxeR.
6) Create new m2ts file.

Because my pc is a little bit slow, i want to transcode a 720p x264 .mkv video file to vob x264 so that i can encode the greek subtitles into the file, have the best possible quality from transcoding and then play the file to my PS3.

My question is, should i check the "increase subtitle size" or the default is good enough for a 40" LCD tv?

It says the audio source is german dvd.
This audio rate from pal dvd will be 25fps, but the video is 23.976.
Thats what the problem is, the video is playing slower then the audio.

The easiest thing to do is make a new mkv with mkvmerge and change the video framerate to 25fps.

I have a problem with subtitle using mkv2vob 2.1.2, i split first the mkv with mkvmerge in 2 parts, then i use mkv2vob, the first (vob) part is ok , on the other the subtitle appears in fullscreen.

I have use mkv2vob a lot of times in many mkv files with subs but this the first time that i have this problem.

Thanks a lot for your interest ,i am doing what you suggesting,but some times when i split the vob in 2 parts with your progamm the second one doesnt play in ps3.
This the reason why i am using the mkvmerge.

The latest version uses a different split method which should work, and its faster too since splitting is done during muxing it is one less file copy.

I did what suggesting,using the option (split FAT32) but the mkv2vob transcode the moovie only few minutes then muxing and at the end i have a small vob???????????????????????????
This the first time i have this problem.
Using the mkvmerge first the transcoding with mkv2vob is proceeding succesfully,but i have the problem with the second vob with the subtitle in fullscreen.

First of all, congrats for the nice app, 3r1c...

It worked perfectly on half of my HD stuff. However, I got a badly pixelated image for a couple of files, even though the sound was still AC3 5.1. The final VOB file size was around 1/4 or 1/5 of the original one, which explains why I got the downsampled image. But I still can't see why this is happening to the video stream.

I then tried to use the "Never Transcoding" option in your app and got the black screen (with 5.1 audio).

So, I would appreciate if you could take a look at this sample and tell me what's going on...

I also tried mkv2vob on the full movie and it didn't work either: pixelated image (auto transcode) or black screen (never transcode). It just took me longer to realize the same thing...

P.s.: additional info - all MKVs play fine in WMP, VLC etc and it's not a CPU/Memory/Network limitation either. I'm running Vista Ultimate 64, although I don't see why this would be a problem since it worked for other MKVs before and all other 32-bit stuff runs fine.

What transcoding codec are you using?

That's exactly what I did. This is the <original> mkv file as obtained. I've done nothing with/to it. I even downloaded it from RS myself to make sure I hadn't uploaded the VOB file (after conversion from mkv2vob) instead.

I'm using no transcoding on my own. Everything is being done by mkv2vob. Moreover, my VOB folder is set to "no transcoding" in TVersity so couldn't blame it either. But since the actual VOB file size is 75% smaller than the original one it would be safe to say that problems arise even before streaming to PS3.

Can I make a suggestion: could you tell users whether the MKV file would have to go through any kind of transcoding <before> the app actually does it? My experience so far was that every time it had to transcode the video stream things didn't go well, while when the only thing needed was remuxing it did.

What exactly do I need to do to get a file from mkv2vob to make it into avchd.. I took my .vob file and used tsremux to breate bluray structure but then i tried to play it in ps3 and it wouldnt play the video.. I want to be able to play these in bluray players and the ps3.. what am i doing wrong?

downloaded elizabeth x264 720p, transcoded into x264 into one 4,75GB VOB file with subs. Burned into DL media.

All went well to PS playback except the 5 last minutes. PS3 reported corrupted data. The same DL media in the PC played without problem (included 5 last minutes).

it's a 13Gb version of Live Free or Die Hard, it has:
track 1 - video
track 2 & 3 - Subtitles
track 4 - AC3 stereo
track 5 - DTS 5.1
track 6 & 7 - subtitles

it says it transcodes DTS to AC3 (1/2 and 2/2) but there's no sound in the final file, the other files I did at the same time (some of which had DTS as track 2) came out fine
