or buy a faster PC to be able to encode faster + actually watch them :)

I can watch them fine on my shiny new imac, but it still makes me feel a little sad that i have to run Windows in a window to do the conversions - works very fast tho, even on 15gb files!

Still, i'm sure you are working hard on producing a OS X version of mkv2vob for us all ;)

there was some discussion about this a few pages back - i think it was just being misidentified...

they are not identical!, do not split with mkvmerge, it does not duplicate the header properly and so mkv2vob cannot determine the h264 levels except the first file.

feed the original full unsplit file to mkv2vob and use the split option in the configuration tab.

thanks!

is this why i am getting a black screen with the 1080p's then?

also with the splitting option it splits the files right under 4gb and then leaves a tiny file for the end of the film. can this be adjusted?

transcoded 1080p files play without picture AND sound on the ps3. it is a shame because the non transcoded ones keep the 5.1 (with black screen) must be something simple (to you!) to get the picture to work.

i'll start again tomorrow.

you will get a black screen with "never transcode" if the video needs to be transcoded.

i dont know what you mean by adjust it to avoid the small file at the end.
what do you want it to do.. make the file too big that it wont fit or what?

sorry. the file in question with the splitting was about 8gb's. it split the file into two chunks of 3.99gb and one 426mb. the last file was about 1 minute long! it's no biggie.

my main issue is with the black screen though. I must admit i have split the (1080p) files with mkvmerge first so i will not do that next time. The reason i use mkvmerge is to even the split size out more. So i get three 2.5gb files at around 50 mins each.

However i have only had success with 720p files up to now using this method. 1080p's didn't work so i will put the full file through tomorrow and see how i get on.

thanks.

Hi :thanks: for all your hard work on this 3r1c - I've been following this project from the start. This tool has added a ton of value to my PS3. Going forward I have a couple of requests for things that could be cool to add to future revisions somewhere down the road.

The real magic of what you've done here is to take various file types and make them into something that the PS3 will accept, which is frankly awesome. In light of that there are some other things that I thought would be cool to add.

1) Some way to transcode mkvs which use a vc-1 codec insteade of h.264 - when I tried running one through my output file just had audio. I would assume the easiest would be to transcode to Mpg2 - harder would be to transcode to 264. I plan to play with this in the near future suing avisynth, but if it could be incorporated in the process that would be awesome.

2) Some way to take an HD file from a Tivo and make it into something the PS3 will play. Last night I took a file legally transferred from by Tivo, ran a Streamfix under VideoRedo, then converted it into a h.264 mkv under Handbrake, and am now running it through mkv2vob - I'll know when I get home whether it worked, but this is certainly a clunky path. I was wondering if it would be possible to add some x264 functionality to the mkv2vob process to allow it to do internally. Alternately, it could probably be done in Handbrake if I could figure out what settings to use to make the output acceptable to the PS3 - clearly level 4.1 is needed, but there seem to be a lot of other factors.

In any case, thanks again- loving the product.

Are you sure it's a VC-1 inside a MKV? I'm asking this since i've never encountered none, whenever it is a VC-1 I always find it in a WMV container, and there you need to do nothing to play on PS3 (unless you want to burn subtitiles onto it).

Correct me if I'm wrong since I've never seen that before.

Yeah it is, I know because I sort of created one of the beasts from an HD-DVD. It actually plays fine in Windows Media Player - I wouldn't be surprised if it could play on the PS3 with a little bit of tweaking, but that's getting beyond my capabilities. If there is a way to drop it directly into a PS3-compatible WMV container I'd love to know how.

Thank you so much for this great proggy 3r1c..!!
I've been closely following this thread and on a whole it seems to work out for a lot of people.
I'm facing problems though. I have a 6.5 gb 720p movie with subs (in UTF-8) and after choosing the appropriate settings in the configuration tab i get an error as as soon as the transcoding process starts. A dialog box pops up and says "Mencoder.exe as failed". Btw i have a P4 cpu at 3.2Ghz with ample RAM size and hdd space. After an extensive researching on the net, i found that mencoder.exe when compiled might not work on certain CPUs. I also tried downloading the P4 compatible mencoder.exe but that doesn't work as well. Mkv2vob crashes at the transcoding level.

Appreciate your help with this. Thank you.

You need to find a mencoder.exe which works with your system.

It works fine for me so i cannot test it at my end.

the error you are getting suggests your command prompt is not working properly, or else your mkv is corrupted.

Ok... Thats what I guessed... But why does it play without problems on the very same pc ? Maybe there is something in the header that mkv2vob doesn't like ?

Hi 3r1c,

First let me thank you for the great work you have been doing with the wonderful application (MKV2VOB).

Now my doubts:

Is it possible to transcode using AVC instead of MPEG2? Maybe this is a dumb question but whenever we add subtitles we end up with a file three times bigger :(
Let me explain, while using a MKV (AVC source) and converting it to VOB, we end up with a VOB (AVC) smaller, but when subs are added the resulting VOB (MPEG2) is quite larger :(

Thanks in advance,
Keep up the great work ( I will send a donation soon to help out too),

Regards,

Fenix.

What I'd like to see is a smart splitting option. One that would analyze and figure out a split amount that resulted in equal size files but all under the FAT-32 file size limit. So if perhaps a file would end up being 9GB, rather than 4GB + 4GB + 1GB it would give me 3GB + 3GB + 3GB. I think you could see my point?

^^Totally agree with you buddy. I had a 4.3 gb file and after running through mkv2vob i ended up with 3.99gb and some 200mb file. I checked the latter file and only the credits at the end were cut as the 2nd part.

This is why it splits the way it does.
So you can choose to ignore the last small file if you dont want it, this can mean the difference of wasting a disc for just credits.

As everyone else has said, thanks Eric for such a great program...

Question. Before you started using TSMuxer, if I had a 4.37 GB mkv file, I would trim the credits and have around a 4.25 GB mkv. Then mkv2vob would generate around a 4.33 GB vob that I could burn on a single layer. FF/REV, as you know, didn't work.

But since TSMuxer, that same 4.25 GB mkv turns into something closer to a 4.4 or 4.5 GB vob.

I just wanted to verify that's what others are seeing and that it is TSMuxer that's adding the "extra".

As such, I'm sticking with mkv2vob 1.4.1 since I can get movies that fit on a single layer disc.

Thanks,

Chris

Not true. DVD's are MPEG-2 only and like 9.6mbps bitrate. You CAN get FAR higher bitrates and resultantly FAR higher quality in a DVD5 size file using AVC encoding.

That may be true, but most regular DVD's that are of that high of bitrate with high bitrate sound are usually on DVD9. Now AVC does produce high quality video but if you have a 2 hr movie with 5.1 sound you're still going to be way above DVD5. 720p movies maybe, but if you're looking for 1080p you have to re-encode at a lower bitrate which I don't want. If I wanted it to look good on the iPod it would be ok, but when I'm doing HD movies I want the best otherwise what's the point in having HD.

Your wireless has to be very good quality to stream HD.
You will never get actual 54mbit no matter what it says it is.
You need some software to monitor the actual transfer speed and move your ariels to get the best signal (media center does this for 360 but i dont know of any similar for the ps3)
Stream with wires if you can its much better.

As for xbox360 streaming there is no way to get 5.1 audio out of the 360 even on wmv.
The 360 converts all audio to stereo 2.0.

I have 360 too, mainly i use the ps3 for video playback and streaming from the pc, and the 360 for games.

make sure ppl realize though that HD wmv's play great in full 5.1 suround when played from a usb external hdd formated to hfs+ (supports files larger then 4gb unlike fat32)

Quatre
5th March 2008, 02:40
WOW, 360 does not convert all audio to 2.0, If you have a video with WMA 10 Pro, wich can go up to 768Kbps 5.1, it will convert the audio to DD 5.1 . Of course if you have digital optical audio, and your receiver supports DD 5.1

i have one 360 with optical audio and one connected via hdmi into the receiver. 360 can't really make use of audio codecs/capabilities that you can only get from hdmi (not optical) like ps3 can but you get the DD 5.1 via hdmi to receiver or optical to receiver.

it seems this tool has nothing to do with reencoding but with changing containers, therefore moved to the container forum

please correct me if i am wrong

i think it does a lot more then just change container but yes i think it only reencodes (to mpeg-2) if it has to which is for most 1080p x264 except the newer L4.1 ones.

Can't just mount the .iso with something like daemon tools, and pull the files off like copying from any other drive?

nope of course i've tired this and opening the iso in winrar which usually works.

after further reading i see this is a problem with these type .iso that are made with the bluray file structure.

its an avchd file (.m2ts) and its made with the bluray file structure (BDMV>Stream folders is where the main video file is) my avchd video camera has this file structure also.

its made so that you can burn hd video file onto a regular dvd but it plays in bluray players.

i know some were looking to do this with files they remuxed from mkv to avc (not transcoded) and there is software to do it (like i said the avchd video cameras come with software to do this)

the problem is, for some reason this type of iso with that bluray file structure makes it very hard to extract the .m2ts video file out for some reason. I've read elsewhere ppl having this problem but ppl who dont know just suggest the usua winrar and daemon tools etc that doesnt' work.

the only thing that could even open the iso to see the folders and find the main .m2ts avc video file in BDMV>Stream was isobuster but even that couldnt extract that .m2ts video file out.

so while its nice that whoever released these did it as an iso with teh bluray file structure and can be burned to dvd5 to play in bluray players (including ps3) its pretty much a pain for anyone that doesn't want to burn it to dvd.

i'd rather they just released the avchd .m2ts video file and let ppl who want to author it as a bd to do it themself as its not hard and there are progs that do it for you.

meantime im still searching for a program that can extract the .m2ts avchd video file out. i may have found one that can but its a large pay program that has to be burned to cd/dvd, so its a real pain.

I post here instead of just to 3rlc to see if anyone can see what the problem is?

the only thing i can think is that i see it says avc @ L5.1 while mkv2vob says it didnt' transcode it. doesn't L5.1 still need to be transcoded to mpeg-2 even if its 720p or no?

is it something with the dts messing it up? I've done episodes 1-4 of this same tv series from same author/group. why suddenly episode 5 is a problem? only thing i can think also is maybe the first 4 were done with older version of mkv2vob?

if you cannot extract the files then its probably not a real iso but some other format. first thing you need to do is find out what it is. then look for a program to extract it.

or burn with nero and select the virtual drive, this will make a nero image file, then extact the nero image.

L5.1 shown there is what the headers say, it doesnt mean its actually 5.1 mkv2vob detects this automatically.

well what extension type does discs authored with the bluray file structure use for its images? like software that comes with avchd camcorders that let you burn your avchd video clips to a regular dvd that plays in bluray players. it must make an image file right? what is the extension supposed to be? maybe the authors of this file just made it .iso because ppl are familiar with that and you may be right that its not a real .iso.

3r1c,

What's the latest on the new version cuz I'm anxiously waiting for a fix for the channel swap problem.

so currently mkv2vob makes the sound come out of the wrong speaker on every file it remuxes or transcodes?

if so that is a pretty big problem. right channel sound coming out of the center speaker i think was one example you made.

i'm confused as to exactly what the problem is but as you've described it, that sounds really awful and i hope it gets fixed asap.

Am I being really stupid or is there no way of keeping the correct aspect ratio of files after they've been passed through mkv2vob and moved into the new container?

I've tried on various films I've downloaded that have 2.35:1 aspect ratios with properly cropped off borders and when they're played back on the PS3 the only way of watching is in a small box with borders either side or stretched vertically to cover the 16:9 ratio over the space that should be black borders...

Do the files I convert need to have a 1280 x 720 size? Or can I use anamorphic ones? I'm guessing the former...

PS - I also noticed the probs with AAC files and the wrong audio channels, both 300 and Finding Nemo had the centre coming out of the right hand side.

Tha'ts why they make blu-ray. Face it, most of the mkv content that is useful for this program is stuff that was sourced from 1080i or 720p. Since there IS no 1080p broadcast, I'd get my 1080p from blu-ray's (bought, not downloaded). No current download technology is going to get you even close in a reasonable time OR cost.

Nobody, not even YOU, can predict that this "last small file" will be "just credits". Come on, you know that. :) That one particular example was just lucky. Is giving us the option to split into "equal" parts too hard?

The problem is that once it has finished remuxing my original mkv file to vob, I am unable to delete the mkv file because my computer says that the file is still in use. This problem does not occur everytime I use the program, but none the less is becoming a bit of a nuisance when it does! Has anyone else encountered such an issue? Or does anybody have any solutions so that I can convince my computer the file is no longer in use so that I can delete it? Thanks in advance for any help. just close mkv2vob and you can then delete the file. the prog is still using it somehow. also you can select the check box to delete original mkv file once mkv2vob is done with it. (keep the rars maybe just in case)

I wanted to mention that I wasn't crazy about the output folder option as where as with the input folder it at least leaves off where you chose the last one from so a lot of the time your new file isn't far from there, but for the output folder you have to pick it each time and i usually want it in the same folder as the mkv. then i del the mkv and keep the rars for it in case i ever need it again or whatever and then just use the new .vob file

it seems its easier to just pick one output folder for mkv2vob and leave it as that.

with all the complaints and requests I just wanted to show where this program really shines.

I was needing a few tv eps but could only find the 720p x264 that were dubbed in german but i saw it was just taking the original english version and putting a 2.0 dubbed german audio track over it so the 5.1 english was still there but when you play on pc it chooses that default german 2.0 audio track.

well just using mkv2vob with the preferred audio language to english it fixes that because the files didn't have video nor audio that needed transcoding, it literally now is like 30seconds to 1minute to quickly remux the file and its ready for ps3.

super fast easy and chose my correct language audio track. i dont think any other program really would do this that easy and fast so lets remember to appreciate the program where it shines while we help test it for bugs and make requests to make it better.
