I have been using mkv2vob succesfully several times. Very nice software indeed.

I do insert subtitles which means that the video is transcoded. I use the x264 option and most of the time I di add the .srt file as an additional file in the directory in which the mkv resides.

I have used Mediainfo to understand 'input' and 'output' and noticed that the fps for most of the files does not change.

For one video however is changed from 23.976 to 25.000 fps. Why would it do this? Which software is used to do the transcoding. How to set the fps?

I do not understand this. Anybody?

The only thing that I see is different with this one video is that I did not insert an .srt file because the subtitle I needed was in the mkv.

If needed I can post the complete Mediainfo stuff but maybe somebody knows what is going on?

Question about the DTS to AC3 conversion: Does the bitrate stay the same or does it automatically lower it to standard AC3 bitrate?

Question about the DTS to AC3 conversion: Does the bitrate stay the same or does it automatically lower it to standard AC3 bitrate?

It lowers the bitrate from 1500kbps(DTS) to 640kbps(AC3)
When I show the info while the video is playing on my PS3 it goes up and down which indicates to me that it's Variable Bitrate but it's still set at 640kbps

Question about the DTS to AC3 conversion: Does the bitrate stay the same or does it automatically lower it to standard AC3 bitrate?

Max allowable bitrate with normal AC3 (not EAC3) is 640kbps so that's what it encodes it at.

It lowers the bitrate from 1500kbps(DTS) to 640kbps(AC3)
When I show the info while the video is playing on my PS3 it goes up and down which indicates to me that it's Variable Bitrate but it's still set at 640kbps

I'm not so sure - I encoded an audio track myself and used CBR AC3 640kbps (and tried 192kbps 2.0 as well) and it was not steady on the PS3 - no big jumps, only small, but still.

Another memcoder error :

Live Free Or Die Hard 2007 PROPER 720p BluRay x264-SiNNERS

P.S.- I tink is from the realese, i try 3 diferent versions of National Treasure Book of Secrets 2007 , only IAPULA do not the memcoder error , and work fine.

BTW, you are not supposed to use the original names of the files which insinuate that you downloaded them

also, is that the 6GB release? because if it is, it doesnt need transcoding. I converted mine and watched it earlier today

I also got error during installation on Vista (Installation ended prematurely because of an error), but I found a solution that worked for me. Start a Command Prompt (right click and run as Administrator) and type "regsvr32 VBScript.dll". Run mkv2vob setup again, and the problem should be solved.

Hi, I'm following this title for a while but this is my first message. I didn't have much trouble with muxing infact only one movie gave a muxing error but when it comes to transcoding I have only succeded in one file. I generally use transcoding for changing the file to Divx inorder to enable subtitles. Process starts and ends without any error but when it is completed there is no transcoded file, it just disappears. Has anyone experienced such a problem or am I the only one facing it everytime I try.

By the way I want to thank you 3r1c to let me use my ps3 for the main reason I bought it.

But i insert subtitles, and need to do the transcode. Of course i not use the name of realese, is too long, and i insert subs and put short names in the 2 files.

Has anyone actually got to the bottom of this mencoder crashed error at all or not really? 31rc any suggestions on what we can do? Oh and also with regards to an error log being within the program??

i understand that the main problem that is being addressed is the crashing of mencoder, and i am lucky enough to not have that problem. that being said, has anyone transcoded a file using x264, burned the file to dvd, but the movie only plays to a certain time and resets?
for example, my Batman Begins 720p rip (8GB) transcoded overnight and after wasting 2 dual layer dvds to get it to burn, the file on the 3rd stopped playing after 1:07:21 and immediately restarted without skipping a beat. was anyone unlucky enough to suffer the same?

This is the exact same thing that has happened to myself and a few others. I cant remember (Audioboxer perhaps, maybe) work out a possible solution to it. A few things that appear to make the movie/episode shorter (i have had 3mins out of 2hrs to similar to yourself).

Do a quick search in this thread for my posts (gotta get to work soon) and also Audioboxer. Some quick things that have worked have been to chop anywhere between 2sec-31sec(Equalibrium) (this takes a few steps, but hopefully you will find it in our posts) and then re do it through mkv2vob.

Cheers

PS Still a bummer for all you that keep getting crashes still. Mine has done everything i have thrown at it so far.

I am converting 1080i TS files and whenever i try to run it through MKV2VOB, i get an error saying "error repairing AC3" what does this mean? how do i fix it?

stesmi
22nd May 2008, 12:34
That error is described one or two pages back. It's a 5.1 stream with only 2.0 channels containing audio data.

CowTipper

is there anyway of fixing that? I am assuming i would have to re encode the audio

stesmi

What I did when I got that error was extract the ac3 stream from the MKV and then reencoded it manually and not trusting mkv2vob with the job. I used besweet for the job. That way works. Mkv2vob has failed every time in getting a working file when I didn't.

So 1) Extract stream 2) BeSweet to reencode manually to 2.0 3) Put the MKV together again 4) MKV2VOB.

I guess you could replace 3) and 4) and just run tsmuxer by yourself, but I chose to do it that way becuause I need to change High@5.1 to High@4.1 and it's either 3) Put MKV back together 4) MKV2VOB OR 3) h264info to change 5.1 to 4.1 and 4) tsmuxer. MKV2VOB is way faster on my machine than h264info in changing 5.1 to 4.1 so it's faster but needs more diskspace to just slap the mkv back together and mkv2vob it.

Hello everyone,

This may be abit off topic so bear with me. Having nothing but recent agro and @!"% with MKV2VOB I have downgraded to one of the original releases of MKV2VOB which offers no splitting or options leaving me with complete massive Vob file at the end of my transcode. I have been reading into the PS3 and its harddrive structure and found it to be apparent to a format called REISERFS (Linux format) Now I have scoured up and down the web looking for a program that allows me to convert a HDD to the REISFERFS format but with no success (no machine with linux on it im afraid).....Does anyone have a Linux PC that they could use to format a HDD (prefabely one over 4GB) to the REISERFS format and then see if the PS3 accepts it in the dashboard because if it does then by rights we can load up files bigger then 4GB and no longer have a file size restriction.

this soft is perfect, just perfect, it only can get better, if you can add a option when you do the re-encoding, to set a maximun output size, that will be fantastic.

You do realize that you can copy a large VOB file to the PS3 with tversity and it will play it just fine... I've copied a file as large as 13GB and it plays fine. I just keep all my HD vobs on an external connected to my PC, usually the transfer takes about 10-20mins depending on how big the vob is.

How come the FAT32 (4GB) option makes the movie too big for a 4GB Memory Stick? Part 1 of my encoded video is 3.90GB whereas my memory stick only holds 3.81GB.

Anyway, great program and thanks for the continuous support!

so does the ps3 play 1080p videos put through mkv2vob now? i remember a while back it had issues, or was it just a size limitation? i tried putting a 1080p sample video, and it played on my ps3.
if there is a size limitation, what is it?

sorry... i'm sure this was answered somewhere in this thread, but its hard to find the answer since there are so many posts with the word "1080p" in it.

edit: i know 3r1c doesn't condone this, but i chose to never transcode btw. if i set it to automatic, it trancodes it. but again, i chose never and the 1080p file played fine on the ps3.

Yes, I have found files where it transcodes stuff when it's not needed and I have found a few isolated cases where it didn't transcode and it WAS needed - but since I was going through lots of files I didn't keep track of which they were or I would have reported those cases.

I have always done 1080P via MKV2VOB. The problem I have is keeping the file as a single file and moving it over. But I am currently looking into not needing to split the files anymore. At the moment there are two options available

1st option is the ReiserFS format which I spoke of briefly above or the 2nd option is to make the file an MP4 using MKV2VOB and then moving the MP4 over via WMP11 (yes there is a MP4 registry patch for WMP11)

TVersity does MP4 - just use that?

I may actually...just been reading up on it. I think I have worked out how to avoid any errors with MKV2VOB (even the latest version) I have figured how to completely avoid transcoding with any file (and no not because I have turned transcode off its set to AUTOMATIC) Providing you use the H264 codec for the video and AC3 oblivously for the audio wrapped up in MKV. extension then MKV2VOB has no reason for transcoding and just starts muxing straight away (done 3 or 4 tests now and all work beautifuly)

At the moment I use EAC3T0 to demux the EVO's and get the video MKV but it oblivously is not doing it in H264....can anyone point me in the right direction? Also what is the best muxing program to use

(I was using Handbrake 0.92 for the MKV and was doing it with DVD rips but unfortunately it does not do EVO's)

FAT32 max filesize is 4GiB (2^32 bytes). If you have a USB drive/memory stick/cellphone/whatever that is FAT32 formatted you can stick files on it but the files can never be larger than 4GiB each. You can however split them in pieces so if you have an external USB drive with 320GiB of storage, formatted as FAT32 you can split your 12GiB movie into 3 parts. (that is of course an example ..).

i Think with subtitles the mkv2vob need to transcode always.
i transcode always to h264, i will try other options in transcode codec mode. My output file extension its also always .Vob, will try anotherīs.

I believe AC3 is what you're talking about and it's very unstable any higher than 640 which is why it's set to default in mkv2vob. That's just what I've been told and found out on several forums. I don't think BeLight supports encoding higher than 640.

That's the problem you see, my memory stick is FAT32 formatted but it has a maximum size of 3.81GB, when my movie gets splitted the first part is always 3.90GB making it too large.

stesmi
24th May 2008, 16:20
Yes, because 4GiB is 2^32 bytes and 4GB (harddrives always has / usb drives do nowadays) is 4*10^9 bytes. Get another memory stick or use another media (usb harddrive) - I believe that option was added to stay within specs of FAT32 and not so that people with 4GB usb drives could use it otherwise "where's the 2GB / 8cm DVD-R / ED / whatever option?". I agree there should maybe be more options though than those that exist but without a generic option to specify size there'll always be someone that it doesn't work for.

itīs possible the opcion when transcoding fit video and audio into one or two dvdīs and output Blueray format for make bluerayDVD for PS3 ?, Thanks.

an option like that would be very useful! mkv2vob spent several hours transcoding "bourne ultimatum" and the resulting file was 10gb. since it was transcoding it anyway im sure it could of done it to fit onto a dvd9.

some more detail on the errors would also be useful, transcoded "transporter" and after it done all the hard work it stopped and said "unable to mux - crashed"

I've been using this for a while now with no problems but over the weekend I found two files that won't convert:

One is a movie with details as follows:

-----------------------
---Video Information---
-----------------------
container : mkv
codec : x264
bitrate : 6100 kbps
resolution : 720p (1280x720)
frames/sec : 23.976

-----------------------
---Audio Information---
-----------------------
codec : DTS 2.0
bitrate : 754 kbps
subtitles : None

There error I get is "Error extracting DTS to WAV!"

The second is a 720p TV episode with the following details:

Video Codec: H264
Res: 1280x720
Framerate: 23.975
Audio Codec: a52
Channels: 6
Samplerate: 48000 Hz

with this one I get "Could not parse mkv file!"

Is there anything I can do to diagnose these errors more or workaround them?

Looks like a nice app - I've currently got an Xbox 360 and annoyingly there's no way to play h264 files on it without either transcoding the video or transcoding the audio to stereo AAC.

What exactly does the PS3 support video-wise (both this thread and Google don't seem particularly enlightening). From this thread, it looks like it supports h264 and ac3 in a vob container? But not DTS audio in vob? Does DTS multichannel audio get transcoded to 5.1 ac3? Are other multichannel codecs supported (eg. FLAC 5.1)?

And in which cases does mkv2vob actually need to do any video transcoding? If it's just a case h264 files with level > 4.1, isn't it enough to just set the level flag to 4.1 in the stream and hope for the best?

basically thats what mkv2vob does...it sets it to 4.1 takes about 5mins on average to do an mkv. the ones that take longer are the ones with DTS audio, theyre converted to AC3 5.1 audio and take about 15mins for those. occasionaly mkv2vob will transcode the video if it detects something that the ps3 wont like. so far ive done about 20 mkvs and only 3 needed to be transcoded. all the rest where just extracted and set to level 4.1. very pleased with it so far. made life a lot easier!
a couple of tweaks would be nice, ability to select the bitrate for the AC3. sometimes the resulting file is slightly too big for a dvd5, so being able to have 448kbps audio can reduce the size just enough to squeeze onto a dvd5. also having an option for dvd5/dvd9 target size for transcoded video would be good too. Theres not really much to do with the video file if it cant fit onto a dvd

It would be great if the next update included an option to re-encode the AC3 Audio. It's necessary to do this, otherwise, the finished mkv2vob file won't fit on a 4.37gb DVD.

Every time I go through MKVExtract, BeSweet to re-encode the AC3 to a lower bitrate, MKVMerge to remux, the audio slowly, but surely, gets out of sync with the video. I set the proper frame rate when remuxing but it always manages to do no good for the sync issue.

While I can see the point in the option that wasn't what the program was designed to do to begin with but could be a nice addition.
