mkv2vob: New App to Remux MKV x264/AC3 which play on PS3

i have an mkv with vorbis audio track. the audio wont even play on the popcorn hour. will mkv2bob conver the vorbis audio into someting the ps3 can play? and what about the .ssa subs, will it hardcode those. i guess it will hardcode any type of subs?

popcorn hour doesnt' play some subs either. i know .srt work will have to find out which subtitle formats it supports and convert into those but for this file have to convert the vorbis audio track into something else so i figure i'll just use mkv2vob on it.

nope mkv2vob says that Vorbis is an unsupported audio codec. so this file i have wont play on anthing then but pc.

jediknight, I was under the impression that any h264 encodes that use more than 4 reference frames were not be playable on the PS3/Blu-ray players... But according to your post they are...

Eragon has 6 reference frames and you say it plays!?

Resident Evil Extinction has 5 reference frames and you say it doesn't play.

Also as Quatre pointed out, if you are transcoding the files then of course they will play. They are no longer h264, they are now mpeg2. I was wondering this myself when you said...

i converted to .vob ( mpeg2 transcode ) and its worked on ps3.

Does that mean you enabled mpeg2 transcode?

If you did then mkv2vob is converting them to mpeg2 and that is the reason they are playing.

4) Wait for PS3 firmware v2.20 to be officially released for download.
5) Install new firmware.
6) Enjoy avi movie.

Now the PS3 has support for subtitiles inside AVI file using.

You can use sub2divx to insert the SRT inside the AVI file.

That application doesn't create an avi file. It creates a .divx file which is an extension of the avi format (DivX media format, ie: DivX Ultra).

I would prefer to use DivXMuxGUI which was created for the DivX media format. Link: http://labs.divx.com/DivXMuxGUI

Although, the application you posted (sub2divx) seems to have a few more options for subtitle manipulation and editing, DivXMuxGUI is more suited to simply mux a DivX avi and a srt subtitle into the .divx container format.

i've seen some stuff released as a .iso image to burn on a dvd4 or 9 as an avchd disc. thats great they play on the ps3 and with ps3, but one thing about the releases i came across was that they were a .iso that couldn't be opened with anything.

so for ppl that just wanted to get the main video file out you couldn't and were forced to burn.

it should be an option to create an avchd disc or not. What prog will make an avchd disc? i know it has to have the bdmv folder then stream with teh main video file in that.

regularly i wouldn;t want to burn to dvd9 but if a file has dts and otherwise just needs a quick remux of the l4.1 h.264 mkv video then yeah i might consider authoring an avchd disc with the dts, just to save the time of recoding the dts to ac3 and to enjoy the superior dts.

so yeah maybe 3rlc can add the option to just make the video compatible and not recode the dts to ac3 so you could then author an avchd or better yet have the option of choosing avchd dvd9 in mkv2vob which would create the avchd disc file stucture and then seeing you chose avchd disc as your output option would then know it can leave the dts intact, but still give the option to recode it i guess for ppl whose receiver doesn't do dts or something.

anyway i got a popcorn hour which play x264 mkv natively but actually files with dts cause it to studder. the solution is just to quickly mux it to .ts using tsMuxeR and then it plays fine with DTS.

had to do this with the Vexille 1080p x264 but then it had no subs so i had to use mkvextract to extract the .ass subs and then subtitle workshop to instantly convert them to .srt subs.

I also used mkv2vob on the file and chose x264 as the output option for the transcoding (which it had to do just to hardcode the subs as otherwise the l4.1 video didnt' need transcoding) but it ultimately made a file that didn't work on the ps3.

of course now the wmvhd of it came out which i could play easily and instantly on my ps3 and popcorn hour also plays wmvhd even from an hfs+ ext. hdd like 360. but pch also can read fat32 (360 and ps3 also can) and the coveted ntfs that neither console can do

i'm still getting more used to the pch and just put a 750gb hdd in it which should make it better but to be honest i kind of like video playback best on the ps3, then 360 and pch last of my 3 devices.

Just as an example for AVCHD.

ISO files for AVCHD have an UDF 2.5 file structure, so your windows needs to be able to read that (Vista does by default).

what subtitle formats are supported? I have a .avi with .idx and .sub files. will that avi file with those subs work because i tried to convert them using subtitle workshop and it said it was a bad or incompatible subtitle file (or sometign to that effect)

man ps3 cranking out the fw updates. i'm always skeptical of sony that they may disable something or that they generall use fw updates to do that and add protections not add features, but i have to say the fact that they added ability to play divx and wmv larger then 2gb now (and i think before it was only limited when streaming or something) is a good sign that they realize video playback is important and want to add new video playback abilities etc. so that is a good sign for possible mkv support at some point.

actually i was just trying to get the audio to work on the popcorn hour. it also doensn't support vorbis audio. ironically that files subs worked but no audio and then the avi i have audio works but the .idx and .sub files with that dont work and i'm unable to convert them into .srt using subtitle workshop.

now that 2.20 is out does it support .idx and .sub? or do the sub files have to be put into the .avi? ps3 doesn't support them as sep files?

yeah that sub2divx prog didn't work for me so i'll try divxmuxgui on this avi with the .idx and .sub files.

edit:using divxmuggui, i just did standard mode. am i supposed to do join mode? i just added teh .avi file for the part where you add the file and for the audio. and it let me add the .idx for the subtitle file. so what does standard mode do? will it inject teh subtitle file into the .avi now so it will work with subs on the ps3?

it finished and just made a new with .mux.divx at the end instead of .avi. can i just rename it to .avi and it now has the subs inside it? it will work on ps3?

Which is why I listed the steps to make the "audio work". It's up to you if you follow my advice but the steps I outlined previously will make your audio work and the video will be left untouched (directly streamed into new container). The steps I mentioned will not only make it compatible with popcorn hour, but also enable the file to be directly played on the PS3 itself. If you don't want to use an avi container, that's fine but you will still need to re-encode the audio. Re-mux back into Matroska container if you wish after you re-encode the audio.

By the way steps 4,5 & 6 only matter if your DivX file is larger than 2GB. I just realised your file is 349MB so you don't need to wait for firmware v2.20 at all.

In regards to which subs the new firmware will support with DivX, I don't think anybody knows until the firmware is actually available for download.

As soon as I am able to download it, I will test it out and offer my help if you still need it.

Note: This thread is more related to mkv2vob, which is targeted at being a HD video solution for the PS3. The video file you posted is Standard Definition (704 x 396) and it contains Xvid so more conventional steps can be used, much like the steps I outlined. Also that resolution is very strange for Xvid. It is meant to be mod 16. That resolution isn't even mod 8... It seems to be mod 6. I have no idea why it was encoded that way. 720 x 400 would have been the right choice.

no yeah i understand and believe me, i'll take it working on the ps3 also. either or both. but yeah with the mkv, it just needs the vorbis audio converted to ac3 then i can use mkv2vob on the mkv or play it as is on the pch.

for this avi that worked but no subs on the pch i'm trying to figure out which mode in divxmuxgui to use to inject the .idx/.sub subs into the .avi but i dont think that will help it on the pch cus i turned subs on on that and no go so it must not support that tyep and i wasn't able to convert the subs to .srt. so i hae to hope that the ps3 supports these subs cus mkv2vob wont recode an avi to hardcode the subs. I just not sure what mode in divxmuxgui to use. standard mode or join mode or? both the mkv with vorbis audio and the avi with the .sub/.idx subs are Rurouni Kenshin stuff btw not that it matters but i figure you migth be an anime fan. I like it but not enough to go through too much trouble. i just used to liek Kenshin so i found a bunch of stuff but as i said one is mkv with vorbis, (so no sound on pch) and vorbis is unsupported on mkv2vob and ps3, the other an avi with .sub and .idx subs that dont show up on pch so i'm hoping i can insert them into the avi using divxmuxgui and then hope ps3 supports that type of sub cus i cant convert them,

and the rest of the kenshin stuff i got is like .ogm, some with .ssa subs. and no clue one what .ogm will play.

I'm curious, Sony seems very careful to say "Divx and WMV", they don't say AVI. At some point I would have to wonder if they will cut off supporting AVI container and only support DIVX (and WMV) container? Of course, if they would just support MKV container, this would all go away. That's because Matroska supports all formats.

In regards to the PS3 supporting the Matroska container, as much as I would love that to happen I think that it is highly unlikely. First reason is that it's a completely open container format meaining that it can support any combination of media streams, so to claim support for it could quite easily be misconstrued. Second reason is because it is open source. That means there is no international standard that governs it and therefore can not be licensed correctly. I am sure that Sony would not want to touch anything that is open source, there are too many legal implications that could surround it.

ah, eheheh that explains it. i knew you were that wakka. I already got the 1080p x264 working on the pch by muxing to .ts with tsMuxeR and using mkvextract to extract the .ass subtitle file and using subtitle workshop to convert it to .srt. works perfect on the pch.

then later the 1080p wmv came out so got that also for 360.

the problem with those avchd disc releases is yeah i couldn't get the video file out to play from hdd and I didn't want to burn. so your making it hard for ppl that dont want to burn it (though easy for those that do) when you could just release the video file with maybe instructions on how to author an avchd disc.

how do you make one anwyay? what prog, because i may want to do it for my .mts home video files from avchd camcorder.

so what can one use in xp to read the udf 2.5 file structure and extract the main .m2ts video file from teh stream folder? i could see the folders with iso buster but couldn't extract teh file. I guess i should not be lazy and just boot into vista. have to put it to use somehow lol.

so all these old kenshin movies i got wont work for for one reason or another. i guess the mkv with vorbis audio ic an get working once i recoded the audio to ac3

I've had that problem with ALL movies I've burned into DVD5, except for V for VENDETTA.
THE ISLAND, CARS and 300 all of them represented DVD blown away (more than 10 DVD ruined).
I convert the files usind x264, splitting into DVD5, with SRT and "always transcode" ON.
Can anyone help me with this? I don't know what else to do...and I pretty much aprecciate to be able to watch those movies!

i was reading around some forums and i think the subs must be on a .divx container for ps3 to read them.

jediknight, some encoders specify the wrong level in the header.

Even though it says "High@L5.1" it still may be L4.1.

mkv2vob detects the real level of the video, its its ok it will correct the header and produde a playable file without transcoding.

how we can detect the real Video Level ?

Since the new ps3 version supports DivX bigger than 2GB and supports subtitles, the only way to embbed them is in just one .divx file. I wonder if 3r1c could please publish a new version without the automatic splitting option, so that we can use DivXMuxGUI or Sub2DivX or AviAddXSub to create the working output file.

I've used AVIAddSubs with a XViD file and worked, thw PS3 showed the subs, but when i loaded a AVI file made by MKV2VOB without transcoding the AVIAddSubs gave me this error:

The "file extension" setting in mkv2vob does not effect the contents or actual format of the file, it just sets the extension.

The default subtitle size is 2. checking the box will increase it to 3 like it was in mkv2vob 2.0.x

its just an old anime but i have a bunch of Rurouni Kenshin files that all dont work on any of the devices i have for one reason or another (ps3, 360 and popcorn hour)

the mkv play on the pch but with no sound cus it also doenst' support vorbis, so it looks like i just have to convert the vorbis into ac3 which someone here nicely listed the steps to do so.

mkv2vob as i said can't work with teh vorbis audio in the mkv.

then I have an avi with .sub and .idx subs that dont show on any of the devices either. I tried a couple programs most recently AVIAddXSub to insert the subs into the avi (i guess is what it does) and still no subs showed on the pch so i doubt they will on the ps3.

Then the other 2 Kenshin OAV (original animation video, i think) and movie i have are .ogm and those dont work on the pch and no clue how to convert them to anything the ps3 or my othe 2 devices can play.

luckily i dont care about it too much cus its an older anime but shame that all 4 things of it have dont work for one reason or another.

i prob have best chance converting the vorbis audio to ac3 then it will play on the pch and mkv2vob can transcode it hardcoding the subs. and slight chance of getting the .sub/.idx subs working with the .avi on one or more of the devices.

funny that i got a popcorn hour to play native x264 mkv (especially 1080p and hoping it didnt have to be l4.1) and with dts that ps3 can't do but yet it really can't as it can't do higher then l4.1 jsut like ps3 (and most devices to be fair except pc) and dts causes stutter problems.

even funnier is that the solution is to mux the mkv to .ts using tsMuxeR which is what mkv2vob uses. and nice thing is you dont have to transcode to hardcode subs but you do have to extract them from the orig mkv, convert them to .srt if neccesary and then place them with the .ts. Due to that maybe for mkv that need english subs i will just mux to .ts and play on the pch so i dont have to transcode for ps3. in fact though i still am getting used to the pch and prefer the ps3, my pch has a 750gb (largest ide you can get and that is what pch uses) while my ps3 has only 320gb (largest 2.5" sata) and filled with avchd vid cam footage, so i really need to use the pch more. do all subbed mkv on the pch is a start to making use of that device and the hdd and leave room on my ps3 for mkv that can be quickly remuxed and dont need subs.

so what is the easiest way to kill mkv2vob as soon as you see it transcoding and want to abort? or i guess i could justpick never transcode but then may waste time making and testing a file that doesnt' work. I was a little disappoitned recently when using mkv2vob on the 1080p Vexile x264 and chose x264 transcode output to lose no quality (before i realized really the only benefit is smaller file size) and though it was l4.1 had ot transcode just for the subs. of cours later i realized i could just mux to .ts for pch (took 13 min) then add the subs back (mkvextract the .ass sub file then subtitle workshop to convert to .srt) plus then the 1080p wmvhd of it came out which plays instantly and perfectly on 360. btw does ps3 still not play the audio of most wmvhd?

also, wht is the difference between exactly .ts and .mts/.m2ts (avc) anyway? and ps3 doesn't play .ts? it used to i think.

3r1c: Many thanks for this new version, DivX is working great now, but I've noticed one thing though... In the end of transcoding the file, the status still says Transcoding Video, it creates a completelly working and valid file, but mkv2vob display a Error 57 window saying "file not found". In this window we're only allowed to press Ok and then mkv2vob shuts down.

one when i try to put hebrew subtitle with convert the file its doing jibrish

two i have the show bluray of celine dion and it cant to finish the convertion its say that it have more space in the hard drive despite i have space 30 giga.

Thanks for the latest version. I tried converting Transformers again (the file that I was having problem with previously) and this time it worked. Even though on the PC the audio was out of sync, it worked fine on ps3 (I transfered 1 of 5 files).

On the negative side, just when I thought my problems were over I came across one :(. Then converting Ice Age 1080p, mkv2vob decided to transcode it and everything went fine up to the "transcoding" point where it give some type of "missing dll file" error and shut down. :(

Are there any logs that can tell what exactly went wrong ?

i have just put Enchanted 1080p through MKV2VOB on auto transcode and it said 'no'!! not needed.

is this common? i thought all 1080p files needed transcoding. what are the chances of it working on my PS3? can't try it till tonight.

No, not all 1080p files need transcoding. If they are already compliant with the PS3/Blu-ray format then they will be directly streamed into the new container.

Let's hope that more downloadable content is done with respect to what the PS3/Blu-ray format is compliant with, then we wont have to re-encode at all. :-D

I have found that all the 720p encodes that I have downloaded have been encoded within the acceptable profile boundaries for the PS3 and can be simply re-muxed. However, as we've just discussed most 1080p encodes found on the net aren't so PS3 friendly. I really hope this changes...

After all, it didn't succefully created the file as I thought... I was watching the video file before, but didn't turn on the speakers (it was early in the morning...), but the error must have got something to do with muxing audio, since it has no audio track. Both playing on PC and on PS3 it has no audio track, also when I tried to mux subtitles, AVIAddXSub complained about the audio or video not being found (obviously audio) and couldn't mux it. The original mkv file had DTS audio, but to my knowledge mkv2vob successfully converted it do AC3 since it made 2 passes on it before transcoding video...

Also, to mention, the mkv file to start with, was just named "ghost.mkv", so I'm sure it has nothing to do with strange symbols in file name.

your mkv2vob is able to do this ? (ironic question: i have tried but failed) or is in to do list ?

that was just before that most 1080p x264 needed to be transcoded mostly do to higher then l4.1 h.264 video level (though sometimes other things can cause it to need to be transcoded)

native hddvd and bluray are l4.1 though and its new scene standard to do l4.1. reason they weren't before was due to diff reasons mainly encoders not knowing, progs defaulting to something other then l4.1, or encoders thinking it improved the quality even though it didnt'.

all new 1080p x264 rels (not repost of old) will mostly be l4.1 and will not need to be transcoded. this is great news for ps3 and mkv2vob and actually for compatability with other devices like popcorn hour that need the x264 to be l4.1 and a reasonable # of ref frames. in fact i dont know any device besides pc that can play higher then l4.1 encodes properly. i guess they were making those rels for pc (htpc included i guess) but now its new standard to do l4.1 and should increase compatability with all/more devices including ps3.

so dont act so surprised, be happy it didnt need to transcode and it should work/play on ps3.

One thing though, though first time, in one computer, in which I have been upgrading mkv2vob automatically, along with the error, the output file had no audio track included.

This time, in another PC, with a fresh install of mkv2vob, I got the same error (the image above), but at least the output file had a 500+ MB of size, with the correct audio track, so... this time it worked flawless, beside the error.
