mkv2vob: New App to Remux MKV x264/AC3 which play on PS3

i have a wired connection but i prefer ext. hdd and not leaving the pc on. if its already on for something maybe. and i dont think it works just having it connected as it is. you have to add the file to the library of a program like wmp, or red kawa or tversity, all of which are annoying.

its not like streaming will give you ff/rw. it will just eliminate the splitting of files neccesary for fat32. ps3 should be able to read hfs+ file system (whic ipods use) as 360 can, but sony is stupid.

i use tversity, all you have to do is add a folder in tversity, then when you add a new file to that folder just refresh tversity, its only 2 clicks.
you can also copy to the ps3 internal hdd over network (i havent tried this but i see others done it)

you could also buy a bluray burner and a rewritable disc, then you have 25gb on ufs.

maybe i'll give tversity a try again, but i didnt like it and i dont liek streaming but yeah i'd try transfering to the ps3 internal with it maybe.

ok i got it. seems to work but doesn't show the proper info for the file. ie. says 0x0 resolution. maybe once copied to the ps3 internal. may just do that from now on to avoid the painful step of splitting the file and get more compatability and be able to hit yes to auto detect if transcode is neccesary. just copy the file to the ps3 internal.

may want to get a larger 2.5" sata for inside the ps3 now. will still maybe use the fat32 ext hdd for single files <4gb and for avchd camcorder footage etc. but yeah it seems for larger files, that it would be quicker to just add the file to tversity library, turn on the ps3 and use tversity mediaserver to copy the file to ps3 hdd and done for later viewing at any time. overall its prob quicker then splitting the files, mux each file, copy to fat32 hdd.

I have just tried a 1080p dts mkv file, everything looked to be ok, clicked yes to transcoding. But output file was only 253MB? Any ideas?

that happened to me once i think. someting didnt work. i'm doing a 1080p dts mkv now and its taking ages, so i know its transcoding. if wht 3rl1c says is true about "99% of 1080p arent valid level 4.1 encodes, which will need to be transcoded."

then its almost not worth getting the 1080p version let alone dts and what problems that causes or maybe the dts was just a problem to split.

ugh, this 1080p dts mkv is taking forever. I guess it had to transcode, i'm afraid its stuck in an infinite loop or is it supposed to take hours like this? if it has to transcode is it the same as encoding? like an mkv to wmv? if thats teh case then i mine as well have done wmv then so at least i could have ff/rw.

i guess really going to have to try to stick to 720p and pref ac3 i guess from now on. :\

I tried to find a way to play the srt subtitles in Tversity, but i dont know how to make the vob file use ffdshow to display the subtitles......

in ffdshow set "raw video" to "all supported"
launch media player classic and open your vobs, this will trigger ffdshow
in subtitle option (on ffdshow) select your subs

i don't use ffdshow for subtitle.. or tversity.. so my help is quite limited.. sorry

once its transferred to the ps3 hdd though it shows all the info including resolution.

btw, when mkv2vob detects that the mkv needs to be transcoded to play on ps3 and makes an mpeg-2, yes it takes a lot longer, i think it was like 2-3hrs for a 1080p movie, but...

FF/RW works! so that is almost worth the extra time. So, I will prob go for 1080p first choice just for the higher res, even though i think you said 99% of 1080p mkv will need to be transcoded. yes the other catch is the 50% larger file size but again its almost worth teh FF/RW.

so its great that mkv2vob auto detects. now i'm not going to kill myself trying to get one version or another, if i get the 720p that doesnt need transcode i'll just appreciate the fast remux and smaller file size, and if its a 1080p and needs to be transcoded, i'll suck up the extra time to do so and the larger file size for the higher res and the FF/RW.

It's great that you were able to solve your problem, but I still cant play my MKV's due to the fact that mkv2vob always comes up with an error saying "Unsupported Audio Codec: A_AAC"

I already tried to demux the video and then remux it with yamb into an mp4 file, but it still doesn't work... :(

i would just try a different version release of your content then at this point. I haven't found an x264 yet that either mkv2vob or GotSent couldn't mux to vob or transcode to mpeg-2.

yes mpeg-2 has ff/rw. i dont think you can force mkv2vob to transcode. it just auto detects if you hit yes and if it needs it , it will do it.

try a diff prog that transcodes mkv to mpeg-2 every time then. but it takes a few hours where as remux to vob is minutes.

here's one i havent found... how do you guys burn files to a disc for the PS3? For the 360, i use either dvd-r or +r, using imgburn and the UDF format.

I tried this with a bunch of .mp4 files for the ps3, and it did not read, as if I didnt even put the dvd in the drive

is the ps3 picky about this or what?

i dont know about imgburn but discs made with nero express work fine on default settings.

It will burn any files which are on your hd.

I tried burning a mkv to a dvd and used nero vision 4, and when i tried adding the file, it said it was anable to add the mkv file.

dont use nero vision, use nero express and select dvd data disc. just drag and drop files.

not with mkv files, those wont play on ps3 without conversion to mp4 or vob.

convert the file first, then burn the vob or mp4 with nero express.

since the audio is copied .. it isn't possible.

this application have some serius potential.. but lack of support to wide audio codecs..

i think will be easy to add a option to transcode audio from aac (for example) to ac3, and so correctly muxing in vob

Im curious how you are able to determine this since the DTS would be unplayable on the ps3, so you have nothing to compare it to?!

If you are playing on a pc this is not supported.

Yeah I already know that, that doesnt answer the question.

The volume is not changed, and since you cant play the DTS what makes you think its changed? ie. your comparing the low volume in AC3 to what exactly? the complete silence of unplayable DTS?

Different movies and shows are encoded in different volume, i have to change the volume on my tv depending on the channel/movie etc.. its nothing unusual.
Just higher your volume if its too low.

I just had a quick question about GotSent. First, I would like to thank the developer of mkv2vob. I started out using it and it worked great. The only reason I haven't used it much was because converting to vob meant I had to use a lot of DL discs. I used GotSent because it converted to MP4 and I don't have a surround sound system and I was able to fit most movies on 1 DVD-R. The problem I am having is one of the files I converted to mp4 would burn succesfully on disc but when I played it in PS3 it would say corrupted data. I used Nero Express and Data DVD and was below the limit for disc capacity. I thought it must have been a bad file but I used GotSent the second time and split it two discs and burned one and it played fine. Has anyone else had this problem?

to rephrase my last post, i take the mkv and use gotsent to convert to mp4. i try burning on dvd-r and ps3 shows it as corrupted data. i tried again with gotsent but this time i split into two files to convert to mp4. this second process works on ps3. why would the same mp4 work on splitting but not on single dvd-r?

I've used to extract h264 streams from mkv files and encoded the ac3 audio to aac and put everything into mp4 with yamb. Some worked and some didn't. Is my assumption correct that this had only to do with the supported avc level. If I change the level to 4.1 with h264info most of the streams should work even with mp4. Because I really like mkv2vob but sometimes I really do love to seek and the ps3 just won't seek with vob files. (Most were 720p not 1080p)

changing the level with h264info only works if the level is set wrong at encoding time (ie. whoever encoded it doesnt know how to use x264 properly), but if the properties of the video actually require a level higher then 4.1 then changing the level doesnt help and there is no way to make that video play except transcoding.

Just had a a few questions about mkv2vob. First to be able to split mkv and have vob fit on DVD-R i need to split around the 2.5GB mark? Also, I need to select yes for auto transcoding on first split file and if no transcoding is done click no on the second file? Also, how do I get mkv2vob remux to vob every time. I read where it only takes minutes. Every time I load mkv file and hit yes to auto transcoding it takes a lot longer.
