mkv2vob: New App to Remux MKV x264/AC3 which play on PS3

Thanks for this awesome little app!

Some transcodes can take up to 4 hours, can you please add an automatic shutdown feature that shuts down the computer once all the items on the process list are completed? This way I can leave it to do it's work over night, GrabIt has this feature and it works great.

Is anyone having problems with the mpgs produced by mkv2vob and the Mac streaming application Medialink? Each film will only play for a short amount of time, 10 to 20 minutes, which is always the same for each film, but different times for different films. Unfortuanetly medialink doesnt 'see' .vob files so i cant see if a change of extention would work!

Conversely, if you are using medialink and DONT have this problem, or know of a better streamer for the Mac, can you let me know

(I know the problem isnt mkv2vob as the films have worked great on my old PC susyem...)

I had the same problem with MediaLink but only on files larger than 4GB. The PS3 supports the files, another DLNA could stream the files, but MediaLink reported a truncated duration as you describe.

The Nullriver guys gave me a new build of the app that works successfully with the large files, even though the duration is still reported as a short value. So you can either wait for the MediaLink 1.3 to be released to the public or choose to chop your files at 4GB when you run them through mkv2vob.

I'm assuming your files are larger than 4GB because that is the only case in which I've seen the problem you describe.

I had the same problem. I tried the demo version of Twonkymedia and all of my files play through to the end. I emailed Medialink, but they have still not replied. Maybe give that a go.

That's weird, when I emailed them with this problem they sent me a new build of the app the same day.

Yeah, the files are over 4gb - i have emailed a few times but they havent sent me the new build so i guess i will have to wait - its no big problem tho as i have a demo version of eyeconnect that will last a little longer and that works fine -hopefully the new medialink will be out soon tho, i hate paying for something that doesnt work!!

3r1c - Looks like your program can convert ACC 5.1 to AC3 5.1 and then rewrapper the streams into a DVD like container (VOB).

One challenge that seems to be within your grasp would be to take a .MP4 container with H.264 video/ACC 5.1 audio, convert audio to AC3 5.1 and rewrapper it back into .MP4 stream or into a MPEG-2 transport stream.

Why do I bring this up?

Many of the Apple HD movie trailers in quicktime contain ACC 5.1, but Quicktime Pro does allow conversion of the .MOV container to a .MP4 container. But it cannot convert the ACC to AC3 and retain multichannel audio.

This would allow us to take a Quicktime HD movie trailer and be able to play it on both a PS3 or a Blu-Ray standalone.

Blu-Ray standalones support H.264 and AC3 5.1 if it is in the MPEG-2 transport stream, basically that is an AVCHD file.

How hard might it be to adopt this tool to create something like this?

Currently nothing exists for this and several folks are looking for something like this in the Blu-Ray.com forums.

Obviously this is more work since you need to demux an MP4 and remux into a MPEG-2 transport stream or back to MP4 container. But it seems like it could be within reach of someone with your talent.

I have a similiar question regarding h.264 files. I have some files that are more or less the same specs as this:

VIDEO:- H264 1920x1080p/25
AUDIO:- DD5.1 384Kbps
AC3 Audio: 3/2 Channels (L, C, R, SL, SR) + LFE, 48.0 kHz, 384 kbps.


i can get more info once i unpack it and look at it in media info but for now i just want to know if this type of h.264 file will play on ps3 or 360? i think 360 plays h.264 of some types but might be only 2ch audio.

Ps3 should play this file type being an h.264 and ac3 audio as long as it is a mpeg-2 transport stream? which is an avchd? well this file looks like it is ac3 audio so that is good but no idea what file extension or whatever the h.264 is or if its mpeg-2 ts.

i guess i can try it on 360 and ps3 to see if it works and if it doesn't i guess mkv2vob can't process an h.264 file like that to make it work on ps3?

by the time i'm ready to watch these, i'll probably have my popcorn hour (by syabas) which should play the raw h.264 1080p file like that.

Im running VMWare Fusion on a 2ghz Mac and most conversions are done very quickly - i have only had one 17gb transcode that took a fair while - but still nowhere near 15hours!

yes the one audio track is a german 2.0, but since i have english as my preferred audio track setting in mkv2vob it uses the english ac3 5.1 audio track.

that shouldn't have anything to do with it because i have other of the same file type (diff eps) that are the same and that I also select the .m2ts extension.

what is causing mkv2vob to make the output file in bluray format and ultimately show up on ps3 as an unsupported format?

Okay in wanting to get Apple's HD movie trailers to play on my Blu-Ray player, I was finally able to get the Quicktime exported MP4 to a MKV using mkvmerge tool.

So now I was going to use mkv2vob on this MKV but I noticed that on the Configuration tab there is a Transcoding set to automatic. The video is H.264 and I want the output video to remain untouched but inside of a VOB, so do I set Video transcoding to "Never"? I am assuming if I leave it to "Automatic" that it is going to actually reencode the video?

I did see this in the first post, but I am still concerned since the Video Codecs show different speeds for the transcodes. And I know for a fact the ACC stream is re-encoded and thus recompressed. So does the quote below specifically apply to the H.264 video.
No transcoding/recompression is done, the streams are simply split and mux into the vob.

Also my blu-ray player requires H.264 inside of a .m2ts stream so can I just choose the output file extension .m2ts and not have too worry about anything else?

I am really hoping this tool works since it can do the ACC 5.1 to AC3 5.1 transcode.

Also can someone suggest a tool that can look inside the MKV container and .m2ts container so I can see what the video and audio settings are? Will GSpot work?

Well it looks like this tool may help me get a QuickTime Apple HD movie trailer playing on my Blu-Ray. I am going to burn it to data DVD with UDF 2.5 and see if it works. I will report back.

I should have just went with my first instinct and ignored that huge warning box when I set video transcoding to never. But that is what you want to do and it will just transcode the audio from AAC 5.1 to AC3 5.1

Final result: 1080p HD trailer H.264 with AC3 5.1 audio wrapped inside an .m2ts stream so that it plays on PS3 or a Blu-Ray player!

Technically its 1056p, I am not sure why Apple does this, but they label it a 1080p trailer on the movie site.

Shayx- thanks for the mediainfo tip, I forgot all about that one. I guess it replaces GSpot?

LOL, No it does not take longer than before. Just me being freaked by the warning dialog when I choose video transcoding of "Never" and backed off like a wimp. And then wondered why it was taking so long to just mux the stream when it was indeed transcoding it. :stupid:

I guess the first post just threw me off since it mentioned that the tool will not reencode anything, but then had an option to reencode (video transcoding) and a warning back telling you you should really be leaving it on automatic.

Long story short, I got some balls, set it to never for video transcoding and ignored the warning box and in the end got what I needed. :thanks:

If you are making the mkv yourself, or its not encoded with x264, mkv2vob will not be able to recognise it, and will default to transcoding any file it cannot read.

Quatre: "x264 - core 47" may be detected wrong, you need to use always transcode on this one, its not valid level 4.1.
The problem is x264 changed the way ref frames for levels are calculated without changing the version number.
Some early "core 47" versions were the old method, and some were the new method. There is no way for mkv2vob to detect which is which. This only effects a very small number of files, if the person who encoded it was unlucky enough to download that version during the short while it was available.

Even with never for video transcoding selected it will transcode? I could swear that it looked like it was not transcoding the video. Is their a way to tell for sure that the video was touched?

I guess its back to the drawing board if I want the original video. I don't understand why your tool can't just mux any H.264 video stream.

Looks like tsMuxeR might be a possibility, but it means I need to demux the AAC audio and transcode it first. Someone suggested a tool called Aften. Is this what you use to the AAC to AC3 transcodes in your tool?

3r, ah thanks for that explanation. So for those rare type you will have to force the transcode, i see. I ended up just getting another version of the same file (720p x264 with ac3) and it worked fine without transcoding.

I really have to say that this prog shines for 720p x264 tv eps with ac3. these later versions are super fast for these type file and its literally about 30 seconds. its almost as if the ps3 could just play x264 its so fast.

but back to my main question at hand right now. what about files labeled simply 1080p h.264, will these play on the ps3? and if not can mkv2vob make it a ps3 compatible file?

I guess i have to check out the file further and see exactly what it is (in media info etc) as right now all i know is that its a 1080p h.264 with ac3 audio according to the .nfo and as I posted in a previous post.

yeah i know about teh sony and pana avchd 1080i vid cams. i have one. the camera itself has the bluray file structure (video files in BDMV>Stream)

for most video files though and the tv and movie files i'm talking about here i personally dont usually want to burn. I've seen some released as avchd dvd5's which is nice but i've had trouble getting the main .m2ts video file extracted from the iso on those.

for these h.264 1080p files of 1 hr tv eps (approx 44min) I just want to play the file on the ps3 (whether from fat32 ext hdd for files under 4gb) or from the ps3 hdd.

so what would you suggest without looking further at these h.264 1080p files i have? what likely will they already be named? .m2ts? if not will renaming the extension to that let it play on ps3?

I guess i wont no more until i take a closer look at one of these files and test it on the ps3 but i kind of wanted to know if it will play on ps3 and if not what is involved to convert it to a ps3 compatible file before i bothered getting a few of these 1080p h.264 but i wanted to see what this type of video file is about as obviously if it plays on ps3 without doing anythign to it then its sligth better then a 720p x264 that requires at least a remux.

If I set it to transcode to MPEG2, it doesn't seem to be a legal Blu-ray MPEG2, would it be possible to have it changed so it was?

the reason I ask is that I often watch an MKV and then I want it on Blu-ray so I use the transcoded file from MKV2VOB (I set it to always transcode if I'm not in a rush to watch something and keep the MPEG2 as it's more compatible with other software) but it always needs transcoding again in any of the software I use (Nero 8.2/Encore CS3 or DVDit Pro HD - but if it was BD legal it would passthrough without anything needing to be done). Seeing that most people are converting hi-def files that are MKVs, would it be that hard for the transcode to be BD legal?
if others are playing the file on a PC or PS3 they won't notice the difference, but for people like me it save 2 transcodes and a lot of quality and a hell of a lot of time!

3ric, i had the problem with the ogg.dll and downloaded the file and tested it with a sample, it worked, i loaded the full file and get a error of missing msvcr70.700 file, when encoding xvid, but only at the end of the process, after all the transcoding done... i've added that dll to the tools folder, i'm testing right now!

there is an option for that, just choose "Overscan Compensation" and the subs will be higher.

about sub size, waiting for what 3r1c has to say (or release :) )

Im running VMWare Fusion on a 2ghz Mac and most conversions are done very quickly - i have only had one 17gb transcode that took a fair while - but still nowhere near 15hours!

I installed VMWare Fusion...The problem must have lied in Parallels. x264 transcoding still takes a hot minute though.

The trouble with all these media servers is that they have to build a database of all your stuff, and then periodically refresh that database. Is there any way you can get live access to your PC filesystem from the PS3? Are there any Media Server progs that allow this?

I'll tell you exactly why, the TEMP folder must be set to a small size disk probably the one which contains windows.
Go to configuration tab, then in Temp directory choose a folder in a large and free disk.

I've been looking through this thread for a discussion on file size but I can't seem to fine much because there's over 70 pages! So I'm sorry if I'm double posting but I can't seem to find it.

the fact that the ps3 didnt allow full cpu and/or ram use for linux installed on ps3 was the only thing holding back and now apparently that is fixed.

i guess for some ppl it may still be too much trouble or over their head to install linux on ps3 and still rather use this program but once done it will play mkv directly without need for remux or transcode.

- as I said in the beginning: the video-stream is okay, plays without any problem on the PS3...
but still: when 'transcode' option is set to automatic, mkv2vob always transcodes it :-(

3r1c, THanks for a fantastic program.

A couple of requests for the next version.
1. A cancel button. If you're transcoding and want abort the transcode for whatever reason, now you have to kill mkv2vob.exe and associated processes via Task Manager, and manually clean up the %temp% dir.

2. Support for .ts files, would be really great :)

3. I think the current subtitle size is just fine, but I can back up the suggestion to make a subtitle size selection.

When I have converted some mkv's movie, sometimes the sound disappears for a second. This happens again and again in every half a minute or so. Have anybody else experienced the same? What should I do to make these movies work?

The only thing these movies have in common (I can't find any other) is that the language of the audio track is undetermined, is that a problem?

Am I really the only one who experience this problem?
