There is no benefit of using AVCHD or PCM for tv eps, unless you want to have it on a disc for some reason.
All tv eps will have AC3 audio, there is no broadcast DTS so it wont need conversion.

ok thanks, so most of these updates are for movies. you think the ps3 is as good as the popcorn hour for x264 movies? 1080p with dts?

actually some tv ep blurays have dts so the avchd mode could be good for those but yeah so otherwise you recommend just outputting to file for 720p mkv tv eps

i dont do discs. also why only .mpg for file output? i thought .m2ts was best extension for ps3?

also wont doing avchd mode make for video thumbnails? though i guess that isnt' enough reason to do it for tv eps as you said there is no benefit of using avchd or pcm fot tv eps unless you want to put it on disc.

if the prog is gearing more towards movies and burning disc, i wonder if i should go back to the previous version and turn off auto updates?

Thanks for the great updates, it's great to finaly have a stop button. I just tryied the new version and had a little problem, i hope that this can be fixed in some way. I used AVCHD-Disc mode to convert a mkv movie, everything went smooth, i burn't it on dvd and wanted to play it in my ps3. Ps3 has played it with no problems but the movie isn't in the middle of the screen?? It's in the top of the screen. I know that previous versions of similar software had green bars if video isn't 1280x720 (like mine) but i thought that this new mkv2vob can fix this. Can this be avoided somehow?

something seems wrong with the new version. in running a tv ep through as normal, it seems stuck in the same place of progress on muxing (set to auto transcode if neccesary and reported as usual with tv eps that it didn't need to transcode) this progess is usually quite quick but seem frozen and not progressing.

how do i go back to the previous version of mkv2vob that worked perfect?

seems there is no way to go back to the previous version and nowhere to dl it. i guess from now on ill disable auto update till i know the kinks are worked out of new version.

Hi there - am i correct in saying that if i convert an MKV with DTS audio to AVCHD format will the size increase ?
Most movie MKV's are sized to nicely fit on a Dual Layer DVD and a quick test i did seemed to increase the size.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

3rlc: I think the new version is freezing up when it has to split files (like into 4gb parts for fat32).

speaking of which i know ppl have mentioned it before but it might be nice to have the option to split the file into 2 equal parts in some cases. like a i have a 2 part tv mkv just barely over 4gb so to have one small .mpg file would be kind of dumb. But I guess there is no way to know where to split it to separate the 2 parts/eps as its probably not exactly in the middle of the file. Also with the file output mode will it still play seamlessly between the split file parts or no?

With the new version, every time it finishes the muxing it complete with an error:

is that redundant to have a "use old file format" option box to check which just makes it a .m2ts and also the "output file extension" which has .m2ts as one of the options just like the old version.

when choosing something other then automatic it says it warns it may make it unplayable on the ps3. what file extension does automatic use? .mpg i guess cus you said that progs like tversity were most compatable with that. I just prefer .m2ts over the others as i know its hd and ps3 related and since i'm putting it on fat32 hdd so dont need the greater compatability with tvesrity and other streaming progs that .mpg brings. So i can leave it as automatic and check the use old file format box to get .m2ts or i can not check the "use old file format box" and just pick .m2ts from the file extension drop down list.

I guess that is the problem I was having when trying to have it split a file larger then 4gb for fat32. the way you stated the error though was that it would happen with any file even one not needing to be split if the output directory was fat32, ack. thats all i use as i only use mkv2vob for 720p tv eps. good thing that got fixed though i think I did one ep that didnt' need to be split and it worked fine so i think the problem was more when splitting for fat32 but still that is enough reason to make me not want to autoupdate cus till that got fixed if the problem was for every file output to a fat32 hdd, i'd have been screwed till the new version. i guess ill just uncheck auto update if its working fine and until i know the new is working ok. but i fear if i hadn't noticed and said anything it might not have gotten noticed by anyone else for some time.

I was using it on "House of Sadamm" 720p but it put eps 1-2 in one file and 3-4. both larger then 4gb so it needs to split them.i guess it would be hard to split it perfectly at the end of ep 1 but its an example where even just splitting the file in the middle with 2 more or less equal parts would be more ideal then have a 3.99gb file and then one that is like 200mb and very short.

anyway i think main question for ppl want to use the .m2ts extension is again do we.
1. leave "output file extension" as Automatic (which regularly makes it .mpg?) and check the box to "Use old file format" which would make it .m2ts?
or
2. just choose .m2ts from the drop down list and dont check the box for "use old file format" as doing both would do the same thing right? and possibly therefore cause a problem

I guess ill go with leave it as Automatic since it warns against picking otherwise claiming the file may not work on the ps3 though .m2ts always did before but ill leave it auto and just check the "use old file format" box to get my .m2ts
i know its proba formality as i could just change the .mpg to .m2ts and it would work but just wondering.

edit: hm when you hold mouse over "use old file format" it says that .m2ts creates slightly larger file but plays better on pcs. id ont need pc playback really other then maybe to test which never worked before anyway using wmp. it says .m2ts works on older ps3 fw's as if it doesnt on new but it does still work on newest fw. anyway i didn't realize that .m2ts makes a larger file and if .mpg offers the most compatability ill just stick with that via automatic.

You are confusing extension with container.
Setting a "file extension" just renames the file after conversion, it doesnt make it a real m2ts/mp4/avi etc..
Setting "use old file format" creates a real M2TS container, otherwise a TS container is used.

In the old versions it always created a M2TS container and renamed it to whatever extension you selected.
The new version uses TS because its less overhead, if you want to restore the way the old version worked you enable the "use old file format" option.

so with the old version it was good i was using .m2ts because thats what it actually was.

so what is the benefit of new version using .ts? what is less overhead? quicker remux? smaller file? so if i have it on output to a file and keep output file extension on auto and dont check the use old file format box it will make a .ts file with a .mpg extension?

and this is the most recommended way? I guess the new way which makes a .ts is ideal. fastest and smallest file with full quality? so why not just have it make a file with a .ts extension? why .mpg? cus of the compatability that extension has with windows and streaming progs like wmp and tversity i guess?

ah, i see now looking at files made with old version highlighting the file mediainfo shows it as a BDAV (which i guess is a .m2ts) and new version shows mpeg-4ts. the .mpg still doesnt play in wmp to test so i dont see the point in using the .mpg extension for me since i put it to fat32 hdd. what is the proper extension for a mpeg-4ts? .ts i guess?

you sure the mpeg-4ts is better then the bdav (m2ts)? what exactly is the benefit? i mostly only care about quality and file size in that order, i want unchanged quality and file size and fast remux.

actually for an mpeg-4ts I guess .mp4 help me know what it is and .mpg is half true, .m2ts would work but thats not what it is. i see from the mkv's i remux to .ts in tsMuxeR are mpeg-4ts so again the proper extension is .ts. why is that not even an option in file output extension?

what is the benefit of mkv2vob then just using tsMuxeR besides some of the file split and other options? or will an mkv remuxed to .ts using tsMuxeR not always ensure it plays on ps3?

is the mpeg-4ts (.ts) mkv2vob any larger file sizse then the bdav (.m2ts) it used to make cus i know usually .ts tv eps are much much larger then .mkv

I end up still being unclear whether to use the new format or the old and with the new what extension would be best. i know it doesn't matter but i want an extension that makes sense is correct and lets me know what the file really is. i guess i could manually rename to .ts

and i'm still not clear for sure if there is any benefit of using the avchd-usb mode. i know all files have to be in a folder called avchd in the root and then it creates a bdmv folder in that? can you still have subdirs for say diff tv shows or do all files from all diff shows have to be all in the same dir in which case that is not ideal. is there any other benefit. do you get the video thumbnail?

its weird how .mpg is a choice for output extension even though thats the new default and if you change the output extension it warns it might not play on the ps3. if .m2ts extension always worked why wouldn't it now and doesn't .mp4 also

I have a problem with converting to AVCHD, the movie has odd resolution so it must be reencoded, reencoding starts and everything is fine, when it's finished there is no muxing ( maybe it's not needed, i don't know) there is no error message but the AVCHD folder is only 40MB big or let's say there's only 2-3 min of movie present in stream folder???? Please help, this is the first time i had this error, i used mkv2vob many time before with this settings and everything was fine. Thanks.

Edit: The problem is definitely in muxing, i starts to mux it reaches 3% or so then it's suddenly complete and i got AVCHD that's 39MB big????
I've tryied to reinstall mkv2vob, installed newest mkvtoolnix and nothing, what else can i do? Please help.

Quick suggestion:
it would be a very good idea if when i choose "Output Type: AVCHD - Disc", there was an option to limit the file size to "Dvd-5", "Dvd-9" or Blu-Ray (25GB).

But what iam missing is a high bitrate output of transcoded MPEG2 files.
Max. here is about 9 Mbps, but it should be around 20 Mbps.

nice update. this is knitpicking a bit, but, I still dont get why one of the output file extensions is .mpg when that is also the default if you leave it set to automatic. when you hold the mouse over that extension it explains that chaging the file extension doesn't change the codec or file format (which is now .ts where as before it made an avchd (bdav according to media info) which the correct extension for that is .m2ts and what I used) so if the default when set to automatic makes it a .mpg why also have .mpg as a choice in the drop down list. Why not have .ts as a choice since thats what it is?

when you hold the mouse over an .mkv file, if you have Media Info installed it shows you info about teh file. with the old mkv2vob that made an avchd file which media info showed as a bdav file type, it didn't show as much info as mkv but at least it showed the resolution.

with the new mkv2vob making a .ts Media info doesn't even show the resolution, just very basic info. kinda sucks and I know this from using tsMuxeR on mkv files for better compatability with my popcornhour networked media tank (it can play mkv but sometimes has trouble with 1080p mkv files with high ref frames etc and dts sound while .ts works 100%)

maybe new version of Media Info shows more info on .ts files?

edit: ah, new version of Media Info does show the resolution when holding mouse over for these mpeg-ts files that mkv2vob makes (their main site on sourceforge is down but videohelp.com had it)

Not sure why, but when I create MPG files out of MKVs my Explorer always crashes when I single click on the files. It doesn't happen on any other MPGs, just the ones created in MKV2Vob. The error I get is "application : explorer.exe" and a fault with file "qedit.dll".

This program has worked well for me when it comes to regular videos, but what about full-length movies and large file sizes?

Right now I'm trying to convert a movie that's in 1080p and is 6GB.

The sound is also encoded in DTS and I'd like to keep it that way in the conversion since my PS3's hooked up to a surround sound setup.

I tried one smaller movie already and for some reason the picture was really distorted at parts.

- 'cause I got the error "Unsupported Video Codec: MPEG2" when I try to convert a mkv which was made by 'MakeMkv' out of an ordinary DVD...

Or is the "DVD MPEG2" so much different from the "Blu-Ray MPEG2" that your program refuses to work with it?

--by any means, please add support for the output of MakeMkv, would make life so much easier: just two clicks to convert a DVD to something playable on the PS3:
1. MakeMkv
2. mkv2vob

..if those two flavours of MPEG2 are really incompatible, then you could always force re-encoding (I anyways want to do 264 out of them...), but at least you could recognize the DVD-MPEG2!

'nother question: any plans to add multiple audio-streams?
PS3 supports those, but mkv2vob only leaves one audio stream in the transcoded file...

There's a site called ****** that's been putting up Blu-Ray rips of anime movies. They just put up a 1080p DTS rip of Akira. It's 11Gigs.

It adds a fake LPCM header so the ps3 will play it, but its playing the untouched DTS stream which the ps3 passes to the audio system.
You will see the DTS logo light up on your audio system.

The one big problem I have always had with mk2vob though is that whenever I convert something with subtitles (that aren't hard-encoded onto the video), the subtitles always come out in a default font different from how the originally displayed.

It's still perfectly readable most of the time, but the process reverses anything the original subtitler may have done to make the words more readable against certain backgrounds in the video.

Is there any way to make sure the subtitles stay in their original format?

SRT Subtitles (which are by far the most popular so I assume you are using these) are stored as text without formatting, except for basic bold, italic.
A player is free to show the subtitles in whatever font it wants.
The way mkv2vob does it might look different from another player, but there is no "right" or "wrong" way of doing it.

If you mean SSA/ASS subtitles, those arent supported by the muxing apps and need to be converted to SRT which again has no formatting.

"The problem was caused buy the MKV container. if the ripper had left it as a M2TS file, it would have just played. MKVTOVOB/M2TS has what was a well Known bug when handling DTS audio only MKV. Due to the library its using, it can fail. what you need to do is convert the DTS stream to another audio codec first. instead convert the DTS to AAC 5.1 or DD5.1 then use a remuxer to combine it with the H264 video stream as MP4/M2TS. "

I have just tried converting an mkv with 5.1 DTS audio, however when played on PS3 it says that the audio is only 2 channel. This is using 2.4.4. Additionally, i have set the file to be split into 4gb files for FAT32, 2 of the files play but the other 2 do not. The PS3 reports one as being unsupported, and another as not having enough memory!

I do remember once converting an mkv file that had DD5.1 sound and it remained 5.1 when I played it on my PS3. There was a significant sound lag meaning that something else had gone wrong, but it was still coming out on five channels.

Also, if you want to take a file (maybe already converted) and just split it without going through the whole conversion thing, what would you do?

I'm still not sure whether I want my movies in two different halves. Even if the files are too big for FAT32 I've still got TVersity to stream them, so I'd like to have both options without going through the conversion process twice.

Okay, I tried converting a movie tonight and video-wise it went smoothly. My main problem seems to be sound.

This didn't use to happen with smaller mkvs (with pretty much identical properties otherwise), but now whenever I'm done converting I get a video with no sound at all when I play it on my computer. When I stream it on the PS3 through DLNA, I just get static for sound. This isn't just happening on the movies that originally had DTS (which on the PS3 came out as 2Ch PCM), but on all of the movies I've tried.

Since the latest updates I haven't done anything with the sound settings in mk2vob. They are all default except I have the preferred language changed to Japanese.

"Use PCM instead of AC3" is unchecked. "Use 448kbps AC3" is also unchecked. "Don't use DTS in PCM" is unchecked as well. I can get this to work if I just get around this sound issue.

Also I just found out that the subtitles are in "ASS" format. The original audio for the movies I have is either Japanese DTS 5.1 or Japanese AC3 5.1 (I think), both in 640kbps.

Hi thanks for this great program, I just have one problem. I can convert a movie with DTS audio to AVCHD ( usb) The ps3 wll show that the movie is playing DTS audio but my reciever will only play it in 2 channel. AC3 5.1 works fine. Any suggestions

Fixed old ac3 encoder which causes stuttering still used when downsampling/fixing ac3.

so does this mean it can now play dts audio from a file say on an ext. usb hdd now or not? if so that is pretty huge and there is getting to be less and less of a reason to use my popcorn hour for movies though I still prefer it.

I do still however prefer 720p tv eps from a 2.5" ext. usb hdd formatted to fat32 on the ps3. Maybe If I didn't have to store my avchd vid cam clips on the ps3, I would transfer movies onto there (I dont like streaming from pc) or if the ps3 could hold larger then 320gb hdd. but i think that is still the largest 2.5" sata drives they make.

Hello!
1. Why AVCHD without transcoding are only for AVCHD with height above 584? (Technical problem?). It's a huge problem because 90% of 720p mkv's are 544, sometimes 528 or 536. Is it a chance that mkv under 584 will be convert without transcoding in the near future?
2. "For USB mode The output wiil be FAT32 Compliant, but You still require a drive with enough free for the whole movie" - I have 8GB USB drive... if I convert to AVCHD USB for example 6 GB movie (I cant choose file splitting), then outputfile will be in 2 parts 4gb and 2GB? and I can play it on my PS3?? But i must have this two parts on my 8GB usb drive?? Is that correct?? :)
