you dont even have to rename the .vob file to .mpeg or .mpg. all of my videos (20+) from mkv2vob are vob's and burnt directly to dvd5's or dvd9's using nero, poweriso, or imgburn as a normal data disc.

Cheers Nunya for the info :)

Hi all

I've donated (paypaluk), well worth it...this is an excellent program.

I have an .mkv file which contains two audio streams, 1 x german, 1 x english. I have english selected as my preferred language in mkv2vob, but the film is still in German once converted.. Any ideas ??

Thanks

Hi, just run the mkv through mkvmerge and before you click "Start Muxing" untick the German audio box and thats it mate, the file will still be the same but without the german audio :)

Thanks for that, I actually found "mkvmerge gui" etc myself prior to reading your answer (via google)... but thanks for replying anyway.

(the problem was that both audio streams were marked as "und" as in "undetermined", which is probably why mkv2vob couldn't identify the english track.)

Hello.

Is there any possibility to adjust subtitle font size and position when burning subtitles from .srt file ?

Sample here (http://atlantis.dreamland.org/~mnc/snapshot20080322154808)

The size of the font is definately too small and i would like to place it a little bit more up :P

The overscan compensation checkbox in the configuration tab is there for moving up a little the subtitles for people having trouble with the standard position.
About the size of the subs, I posted a workaround a few pages back in this thread at least until 3r1c releases a new version with (maybe) subtitles size choice.

@3r1c, just to say thanks for a great app!

I do encounter a problem with some files where the app seems to go through all the normal processes but I just end up with a 1.9 MB (or less) file at the end of it. It seems to happen with 720p and 1080p files, just more often with large 1080p.

I haven't seen anybody else reporting this problem, anybody got any ideas?

:thanks:

at the same bitrate, codecs advanced as x264 give you better results than less advanced codecs as xvid or divx, if you use much higher bitrates MPEG2 still delivers great quality and is less power-demanding in encoding and decoding. So, if you dont mind a 3 GB files MPEG2 because you are streaming it, go for the mpeg2, the only reason to use x264 is to have smaller files to keep the files for collection/archiving. I watch tv shows, and then I delete the files. So I go for MPEG2.

ah thanks for this clarification. yeah i really dont usually care about file size being larger for the most part, so if its that much faster and same quality then i'll stick with mpeg-2 for my transcoding output option in mkv2vob.

its just one post made it seem like the quality was in order of slowest to fastest making mpeg-2 the worst quality transcode output option in that theory but I thought that wasn't neccesarily true and now verified.

mostl likely comma's (,) or other symbols in your file name as i know that causes that exact same result your talking about. could still be something else but check the file name first and remove any ,'s or other unusual symbols.

Is there any way to custom adjust output file size?

For example when I select the FAT32 size I end up with a 4,000 MB file size.

The problem is my USB thumb drives says 4 Gb , but the actual capacity is 3890 MB.

So is there any hope of either a 3890 MB size compatible with 4 GB thumb drives.

Or a custom file size option.

Thank you.

It's really almost always true that codecs usually gives better results the more encoding time they take, but at the same bitrate, so at the same file size. If you use high bit rate with a less effective codec, you will end with about the same quality of a more effective codec but double the file size. This forums are a mine of information about encoding. Just look around in other threads, there are tons of interesting info to read, and things to learn :)

Vexille 1080p mkv does not work on ps3 after mkv2vob transcode to x264.

upon play its just a black screen and video isnt playing when you look at the clock time of the file.

was able to use the seek control to skip ahead and play (play from beginning nor ff worked) but then the video froze and had to shut down the whole ps3 and i couldn't even exit out of the video. it froze the whole ps3.

this was after taking a whole day and night to transcdode the file to x264 (needed only in order to hard code the subs) plus recode the dts to ac3.

luckily i have a popcorn hour but still, i'm surprised mkv2bob took that long to make a non working file.

I've spent quite a few hours googling, reading forums and guides.

I have an .mkv file which is a perfect fit for a DVD-9, however, after running it though mkv2vob, the resulting file is approx 300mb too large for a Dual Layer DVD.

I don't want to stream to the PS3, or copy to the hard drive.

Is there any way to shrink the file size by 300-400 meg ?

(there are no subtitles or audio streams that I can remove)

Thanks.

hi there, I have a question, Is there a way of making an MPEG-2 with 2 passes instead of just 1. Even if the quality is good, it does'nt match the original mkv and blaockiness is presented in blacks and non focus images, I've tried the other codecs, but the all present the same artifacts. Thank you in advance!

the only way i know is to skip to the end of the movie and look at the time code for when the credits begin. get mkvmerge and in the global tab, tell the program to cut the video at that time code. you then get the video as one file, and the credits as a much smaller file. run the movie through mkv2vob and more often then not, depending on where you cut the video, the new file should fit on a dvd.
i do it all the time with some 4.5 GB 720p rips and im sure it would still cut off enough on the 8.33 GB rips

Converting adds 6% to the file size of the included streams, this is limitation of the file format there is nothing I can do.

Select the DVD9 split in configuration tab, it will create file that will perfect fit on dvd9 with another small file, which is probably just the credits.

3r1c, first of all thanks for this excellent little program. It's just what I've been waiting for. I'm too lazy to do all the necessary steps manually, so finally there is a tool which enables me to stream HD thru my PS3 and UPnP server (Twonky) without much hazzle at all. AND it works great. What are the odds :)

I have a feature request which I personally believe would be an improvement to many of us. Now, when transcoding, approximately 100% CPU time is taken by the various tools which are run if you have a mediocre computer like I do. It pretty much freezes the whole computer, and in my case, makes my dedicated file/UPnP/transcoding box go down on its knees. It's possible to go in and give the various applications lower priority in the Windows task manager, but if you have a batch of files this needs to be done for every process which is started by mkv2vob. Therefore, my idea is to add a thread priority setting in mkv2vob and launch all tools in threads set accordingly. Just an idea which I think would make a neat addition :) (which would also probably enable you to add a "kill" option to stop decoding).

Thanks once more for a brilliant program. I hope you will continue the great support.

Hi.i just been reading the threads. And i thought i should let the designer know that this program also works on the evesham HD iplayer, which is a high definition media centre with 80 gb storage which plays 720 and 1080 HD movies, music photos etc from my external hard drive via a usb port.
I googled for a month for a program to encode my HD mkv media. And come across mkv2vob. This does the job almost perfectly. On some occasions though the sound is a little quiet, but other than that ,its faultless. well done :thanks:

This is a great program, very much appreciated.
Perfect for weekly HD episodes :)

I wonder if it's possible, to not convert the DTS audio.
As I sometimes use the output to create an AVCHD, which can use DTS.

It would be so cool to immediately create .m2ts files with mkv2vob and have DTS audio, instead of having to remux some more :)

Thanks for all the work so far.

its just one post made it seem like the quality was in order of slowest to fastest making mpeg-2 the worst quality transcode output option in that theory but I thought that wasn't neccesarily true and now verified.

mp4 and derivative codecs WILL, from the same source, provide a higher "quality" given the same bitrate and/or file size. The tradeoff as you've seen is time. Given the "source" from which we're talking here about creating PS3 playable files, they are already SO compressed the chances of you noticing any REAL difference between mkv2vob outputting mpeg-2 versus avc are very small.

The blockiness noted by another here is very likely resident in the source, no making of multipass transcoding is likely to improve it, only further complicates this great little app, and adds hours and hours to troubleshooting efforts.

/RANT
Honestly, do we all forget what this little app is intended to do? It was designed to take MKV's (of 720p h264 video with AC-3 or DTS audio) and convert them quickly and easily into something playable on a PS3. I don't know that the author is interested in making it into a "kitchen sink" PS3 conversion app, there's plenty of those out there already. If so, great, let's start a new thread of some different topic to discuss the new app. But if not, let's stay focused on what this little app is supposed to do (of which it does VERY well).

No you're not. Nor are you the only one who would like to be able to take a DVD9 rip and run it through this app and get a file result that will still fit on a DVD9. But 3r1c says it's some limitation of how the transcoding is done and he's suggested using the built in split capability to lop off the end. Hopefully that just cuts off some end credits, but ya never know.

If its burned on a DVD as an AVCHD, DTS works fine...made a lot of those already ;)

Transcoding the DTS audio, takes alot of time, and not necessary for me, so that's my point.

and if mkv2vob also created Blu-ray output (tsmuxer has the option), that would be totally awesome.

burnsdg
24th March 2008, 13:55
NB my output settings so far are: file splitting none (video source is only 1,1Go) / video transcoding automatic / boost AAC and DTS is checked / transcoding x264 slow / output file mpeg (should i use VOB or something else for a better result ?)
Those are just fine. Output file mpeg vs vob won't give any necessarily "better result", just changes what output container file format in which the result is stored. The transcoding is really the only thing in this app that affects "better result", and since those particular source files should already be in main@4.1 h264 they shouldn't need any video transcoding at all. Since PS3 should recognize and play this resulting file regardless of which output container you select, your choice is really only important if you have some other playback device that prefers one container format or another.

Theoretically, if PS3 support mkv container, none of this transcoding would be required. Might have to do some profile/level changing (idiots putting stuff out a high@5.1, STUPID). But that's at least a couple PS3 firmware updates away yet (and maybe never!).

Isn't it silly that PS3 supports something if it's on a disc but won't support it from other devices? Aargh, frustrating...

I totally understand the feeling.

I'm actually thinking about getting a blu-ray burner, so I could use 25Gb rewritables for playback...saves the "won't fit" hassle.

No the blockiness it's no present in the source, If you want I make some comparrisions screenshots. And it's no only one movie, it's all files. I only asked for a double pass encoding, because i don't mind spending the double time coverting the movie if the quality improves. After all we are changing from SD to HD because of the quality.

3r1c what do you use to split output?

* Version 1.6.1(b)
- Option to split output file added.
- Option to cut source files added.
- Bug fixed: TS PTS/DTS timing filled wrong for some progressive H.264 streams, if frame data was ahead SPS/PPS data in source stream.

Tsmuxer seems to be able to do it now!

I am still having the same problem even with the new Medialink 1.3

What happens is when you play the 6gb vob file created by mkv2vob, it will play the video and at a certain point, it will just stop playing. When you go to info, the duration of the movie is way off. When I use the split feature of mkv2vob, and split the files, the movie plays fine. Both files show the video duration exactly what it should be.

When i use Twonky to stream the 6gb file, it streams fine with no problems. Even normal DVD vob files over 4gb have the same problem.

Any other Mac users with a solution.

Thanks

For those with Macs - Nullrivers Medialink has been upgraded to version 1.3 and it now streams .vbo files, as well as getting rid of the problem where a film would only play for a short while (although if you press the 'info' button when watching it still shows the duration as only being a few minutes...)

I have tried a file with both MPEG2 and x264, same result both times and I have also renamed the file so there are no other characters apart from letters and spaces (and the full stop for the extension). Still the same result.

Having looked at the destination directory, it looks as though the .m2ts file that is created during the "muxing" stage is 0.01MB less than the final file. I don't know if this helps at all.

Lately I'm having a lot of problems. Some files convert fine while other go through the whole process and at the end "Tsmuxer.exe has generated an error" pops up and conversion fails. I'v tried downloading Tsmuxer again and replacing the .exe file but I still get the same error.

The maximum AVC profile level stated in the official Blu-ray (and HD-DVD) specification is "High@Level 4.1".

I have found however, that placing "High@Level 4.2, 5.0 and 5.1" streams within the .AVI container, can render them playable in hardware devices... But not when muxed within the .MP4, .TS and .M2TS containers and played using the same hardware device.

I'm getting a Muxing Failed on a couple of files that I've just tried running through mkv2vob - no bizarre characters in the name. Settings are Auto transcode, transcode to x264, automatic transcoding, no file splitting. Plenty of free space on the drive its outputting to.

Not sure the best way to debug the problem without a bit more verbosity in the errors.

Yeah, I get that on random MKVs. Very frustrating. I actually have been having a lot of problems due to transcoding between samba shares / usb drives / hard drives. I have a setup now that seems to work most of the time, encoding to and from a usb drive with c:\ being the temp directory. However, I run into some MKVs that give "muxing error" every time I try them. There doesn't seem to be any logging anywhere to track this down...

Please excuse this if it sounds a little newbish... this is what i have done... m2ts---->>tsmuxer--->>.h264 file and dts audio stream---->mkvmerge---newmkv.mkv how ever when i put this into mkv2vob (great program i must say) it causes my pc to restart.. lately its been doing it when doing dts to ac3 but originally it shut down when transcoding the vid (which it looked like it was going to take days) i am going to try using a slightly older version of mkv2vob but any suggestions would help...thanks

jediknight, some encoders specify the wrong level in the header.

Even though it says "High@L5.1" it still may be L4.1.

mkv2vob detects the real level of the video, its its ok it will correct the header and produde a playable file without transcoding.

If its burned on a DVD as an AVCHD, DTS works fine...made a lot of those already ;)

Transcoding the DTS audio, takes alot of time, and not necessary for me, so that's my point.

and if mkv2vob also created Blu-ray output (tsmuxer has the option), that would be totally awesome.

i've seen some stuff released as a .iso image to burn on a dvd4 or 9 as an avchd disc. thats great they play on the ps3 and with ps3, but one thing about the releases i came across was that they were a .iso that couldn't be opened with anything.

so for ppl that just wanted to get the main video file out you couldn't and were forced to burn.

it should be an option to create an avchd disc or not. What prog will make an avchd disc? i know it has to have the bdmv folder then stream with teh main video file in that.

regularly i wouldn;t want to burn to dvd9 but if a file has dts and otherwise just needs a quick remux of the l4.1 h.264 mkv video then yeah i might consider authoring an avchd disc with the dts, just to save the time of recoding the dts to ac3 and to enjoy the superior dts.

so yeah maybe 3rlc can add the option to just make the video compatible and not recode the dts to ac3 so you could then author an avchd or better yet have the option of choosing avchd dvd9 in mkv2vob which would create the avchd disc file stucture and then seeing you chose avchd disc as your output option would then know it can leave the dts intact, but still give the option to recode it i guess for ppl whose receiver doesn't do dts or something.

anyway i got a popcorn hour which play x264 mkv natively but actually files with dts cause it to studder. the solution is just to quickly mux it to .ts using tsMuxeR and then it plays fine with DTS.

had to do this with the Vexille 1080p x264 but then it had no subs so i had to use mkvextract to extract the .ass subs and then subtitle workshop to instantly convert them to .srt subs.

I also used mkv2vob on the file and chose x264 as the output option for the transcoding (which it had to do just to hardcode the subs as otherwise the l4.1 video didnt' need transcoding) but it ultimately made a file that didn't work on the ps3.

of course now the wmvhd of it came out which i could play easily and instantly on my ps3 and popcorn hour also plays wmvhd even from an hfs+ ext. hdd like 360. but pch also can read fat32 (360 and ps3 also can) and the coveted ntfs that neither console can do

i'm still getting more used to the pch and just put a 750gb hdd in it which should make it better but to be honest i kind of like video playback best on the ps3, then 360 and pch last of my 3 devices.

Still waiting some answers :S :thanks:

dude, of course the files work after transcoding, thats the whole point. when its a file that is l5.1 or incompatible to play on ps3 for other reasons, transcoding it will make it work on ps3.

or do you mean you are selecting never transcode and its working even though the nfo says l5.1? it could be incorrect info as someone told you.

even the popcorn hour wont really play l5.1 encodes. apparently they aren't supposed to be done this way and is not neccesary and no improvement from it only incompatability with most devices. its more scene standard now to do all l4.1. i guess in the beginning ppl didin't know and supposedly many progs defaulted to l5.1 for soem reason.

i really dont get what your asking but your asking why some supposed l5.1 x264 seem to play and others dont, but yet you said it transcoded and so of course it plays on ps3. just choose auto and it will make it playable on ps3 and stop worrying about, posting info of 10 files at once and asking why one works without transcoding and others dont when it seems to be you said it transcoded and then were surprised it worked. its supposed to work.

Great APP!!!

Now the PS3 has support for subtitiles inside AVI file using.

You can use sub2divx to insert the SRT inside the AVI file.
http://userxp.tripod.com/sub2divx.htm

Also when I playback a VOB file it displays the button to select the subtitle under the triangle menu.
Does anybody know where to fina a VOB that have a subtitle track inside?

What about a M2TS with the subtitle inside it?

Things are getting sharper for the PS3.

I tried with a vob that under VLC had 7 subtitle tracks.
Under PS3 when I select subtitle it says no subtitle option available.

I guess that the sub support is only for the AVI container.
Will have to wait since the 2.20 firmware update was just released.
