however the reason that the installer does not work would suggest there is something very wrong with your pc, so you should fix this.
mkv2vob installs fine on xp/vista both 32 and 64bit versions and all service packs.

Love the program! I've used it extensively for a while now and want to send thanks for the great app!

I came across a problem when trying to convert an .mkv of Wrestlemania XXIV. mkv2vob shows an error message of "Unsupported Audio Codec: MPEG/L2" If this is something fixable in the future, I'd love to see it implemented.

I haven't followed this thread regularly, so if this has already been addressed, I apologize.

I also have this file and cant convert it to play on ps3, does anyone know yet of a way to get this converted because i tried gotsent and mkv2vob but neither would convert it.

Any help would be great!

Ok i have tested DTS out in VOB form from an MPEG-2 file and it shows that DTS hasent enabled DTS in File form either.

Will MKV2VOB ever be updated to make the output file the same size as the source?

I ask because most 720p MKV rips are 4.37GB - perfect for DVD but MKV2VOB always adds around 200mb more to the output file making it too large for DVD.

Read the Thread. converted files in m2ts format (vob) have an overhead by 5%. Cut your movie before. Best know the credits and converted now.

I have a few 720p videos in .avi and .mpg which are both with two languages, can I use those somehow with mkv2vob too? The PS3 seems to play the mpg but with the wrong language.

Hi again all.

I finally got around to fixing the issue with my "The Day After Tomorrow" encode. What seemed to be happening is whenever i encoded it, all seemed fine. Showed up on the PS3, played back on the PC etc. The problem was the PS3 would only see 40odd minutes of it or about 2.2gig. At first i cut the movie in half and re did it that way and that worked, except it was quite choppy/jumpy in a lot of places. I then changed the output format to MPG4 (only one i hadn't tried yet) and placed it on Forced Transcoding and it now is 100% perfect.

I just found that a bit strange, that all other movies so far 720P/1080P, different Sound Codecs etc. all worked under MPG (Output Format and Auto Transcoding) but Day After didn't. Hopefully this might help someone out or possibly get a fix maybe in the program (if it's the program).

Now a problem i cant get around is related to Transporter 2. I encoded it with standard settings and it appears to work. When i goto play back on the PS3 95% of the movie is fine. Although in some parts it has that Jumpy/Skipping/Speed Up look, problem about it (lasts for 5-20secs each tme). It doesn't loose sync with voices at all just does the above and then goes back to normal. It looks like it happened about 4-5 times in the same place through out the movie.

I though it might have been the network doing something funny so i copied it to DVD and also straight onto the PS3 and the same problem persists, in all the same parts f the movie. Though when i play it back on the PC all is fine, with complete smooth playback and no Jumpy/Skipping playback issues at all. So that leads me to believe it's something to do with the PS3 reading the Codecs/Container and having little hissy fits.

Any ideas on the Transporter 2 problem or even why Day After Tomorrow did what it did. Just to try and help others out also.

Of course you werent able to ff or rw but i think thats well worth the sacrifice to get the whole movies on 1 dvd. And yes I have cut the credits on alot of movies that still didnt fit.

Yup have all of them. But i would prefer 3r1c ok it, only for the reason, that if using an old version could bring even more questions that migh have been answered many times before and also the fact that since that realese there has been many bug fixes. Although it is freely out there, all the old versions that is.

I have been trying to convert 1080i .ts from BBC HD (High @L4.0) to play on my PS3.
Conversion goes fine, however when played back on the PS3 I only seem to get I-Frames so I see a succession of fixed images.
The sound plays more or less OK, but skips from time to time.

I am streaming the file via TVersity over a gigabit link.

The .ts comes from DVBViewer.

I am currently viewing on a 32" Sony crt TV, (do not mock, my Pana full HD should arrive next week), could it be that the major downscaling from 1080i to 576i is too much for the PS3?

i also tryed to encode run fatboy run manually but if i kept the bit rate at 640 i would still get skipping, i lowerd the bit rate and now it works fine.

is there any way that in a later version you might include the option to choose the bit rate for the audio?

Hi there again 3r1c. I have to say a HUGE thanks to Audioboxer for his earlier suggestions regarding the DTS (possible) problem.

I just tried it on The Day After Tomorrow and Transporter 2 encodes and they are both now perfect using the method he mentioned earlier.


I've manually converted the DTS audio to AC3 by doing the following,

1) MKVextract used to seperate .DTS and Video (I used MKVextract GUI)
2) Tranzcode 0.4 to seperate DTS to 6 WAV mono channels (I used TranzGUI)
3) WAV to AC3 Encoder 1.1 to create 6 Channel AC3 (use MuxWizard under file to insert WAVS & then make sure you set the bitrate to 640 on the slider, then hit encode)
4) MKVmerge to create new MKV file of original video plus newly created AC3 track

To elaborate on the points, use mkvextractgui.exe to extract the DTS audio from your mkv.

You'll have a .dts file now.

Load tranzcode 0.4, open the dts file, set to 6 channel mono, then extract. You'll have 6 WAV files now.

Open Wav to AC3 endcoder and use muxwizard. After encoding you'll have a .AC3 file.

Open MKVmergeGUI, load the original MKV, uncheck the DTS audio, drag/open the AC3 file in MKVmerge, and check the AC3 audio. Then click mux.

You'll now have a new MKV file, with AC3 audio.

Run it through MKV2VOB and it will work!

Pretty easy to do, doesn't take long once you get it right.

By the way, download mkvtoolnix and install it from here - http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/ - Above rar is missing MKVmergeGUI.exe I


What would be nice if something along these lines could be implemented directly into the program, whether it's possible i dont know, as i know nothing about coding etc. or at the very least maybe add a little FAQ to the first post, with a bit of cleaning up/easier explanation (i found it easy probably due to fact i being a slight geek myself(so the missus says)) but others might need more Step by Step instructions. I would be more than happy to do so, unless Audioboxer wants to (he will get the credit mind you).

What are the criteria for mkv2vob to transcode a file to x264/xvid/mpeg2? (is it resolution or something?)


I mean, when set on auto, some files it transcodes and others it doesnt.
But my real question is, how come when I choose "Never" to transcode, and I input the same file as the Auto function would transcode, the output file stille seems to work fine?:confused:

It just really saves me some time to only mux the file and not having to transcode the file first. But if I could no the rules it is easier to understand :)

Well, I got my new PC set up and followed Audioboxer's guide ... and - yup - it now plays perfectly.

Bravo to Audioboxer for this workaround .. and of course to Mr. 3r1c for the fab program!

This is not directly related to mkv2vob but since this is the most active PS3 video thread I will ask it here.

I am having issues playing back Xvid files since after PS3 supports files larger 2GB. At some point playback stops saying Unsupported Media (or something like that). The movie can be restarted but it will stop again a the same point. If I FF past this point the movie plays again, but now with 1 channel audio instead of 5.1. Sometimes there are several such points in the movie. This happens with Xvid movies that I have and also with thoise created by mkv2vob from x264 MKV movies.

Has anyone seen something like that? Is there a solution? Thanks.

Since the v2.2.2 update, I am getting "muxing failed", even when tested on files where it previously worked ok. I have tried a full re-installation. Doesn't help.. Running Vista Home Premium.

Anyone having the same problem. ?

Unfortunately, yes - I get a similar problem on Vista (Ultimate) since v2.2.2. In my case I get a VirtualDub Error box saying: "Cannot detect file type of "xxxxxxxx.xxx".

Because all recent versions force an upgrade to the latest (or can I just rename loader.exe?) I have fallen back to v1.05 for the time being.

Still, I'm not complaining. This is still a fantastic tool for PS3 owners.

i have a very similar problem but no know seems to want to even acknowledge my question. I have multiple videos where they just end, some are about 20 mins before the end while other are only half the movie.

Yup, it supports multi-threading. I use a QX6850 Quad Core Extreme 3.0GHz (running at 3.0Ghz, not overclocked) and it completes a standard x264 transcode in around 1hr.

Not experienced any compatibility issues with mencoder on my setup.

When I pick the file I'm assuming you then hit add file as soon as I do that I get the error getting mkv info and that's happeneing on every different mkv file I pick......Jeff

are you sure you dont mean .mts file? i dont think there is such thing as .m2t. just .m2ts whic you are right tversity wont see, which is why i usually have to change those to .vob or .mpg. I didn't realize that .mts will allow the ps3 to see the file via tversity.

if this is the case then 3rlc, you could make a quick easy change to the output file extension choice of .m2ts to .mts instead. I know its just an extension but the fact that tversity can't see the .m2ts makes it much less usefull of a file extension for mkv2vob and would save ppl from changing it themselves.

I actually prefer .m2ts/.mts extension for avc files (x264 that didnt need transcoding) and .mpg for mpeg-2 files (x264 that needed transcoding)

I have a popcorn hour btw that i use to watch 1080p mkv with dts but its in a different room and it has bugs of its own so I still use mkv2vob and ps3 to watch stuff also.

speaking of .ts stuff. I had a recent cirque du soleil .ts that didn't play on the pch. I think i tried running it through tsMuxeR to make it a .mts that ps3 could play and that didnt work either but mkv2vob took the multiple .ts files joined them and made a file that will work on the ps3 and should on the pch also (as pretty much everything that works on ps3 will work on the pch so its kind of best to put stuff through mkv2vob anyway so i can play on both)

I believe it had to transcode the .ts video once joined but again it was the only thing that worked and this way i have a file that works on the ps3 and popcorn hour.

Yeah, I'd love this issue to be resolved too - to save having to use other software to compensate.

mkv2vob is coming close to being a perfect application.


Also, I'd be very interested if Mr. 3r1c could clarify how his proggy determines if an video stream needs to be transcoded for playback on the PS3. Is there a list of which resolutions the PS3 supports without having to transcode?

i have just converted a film with subs (the orphanage 720p).

it was in a folder with the srt. i added directory, checked always encode subs and load from srt. i also had the split fat 32 feature on (for external hd with ps3).

however the second part of the output file has no subs transcoded. anyone else had this problem? is there a fix?
