If I could make a single request however, it would be to add a batch mode (if possible). It would be great to queue up a directory of files to convert from .mkv to .vob and leave my PC unattended overnight to find the process complete!

I have not tried a dts file in 1.3 yet. It worked in 1.2 i know.

i noticed this on a couple mkv. I dont know if the orig mkv was like that or if its something that happens during the remux, but everything else was louder then the center speaker dialogue. I had to manually turn up my center speaker to better here the talking where as usually the dialog and center speaker are often the loudest.

hey 3r can you give us the command line that you use to transcode to mpeg2? I can do most of this manually but am having issues with that one. I assume you are using ffmpeg to do this but am struggling with the options.

I just wanted to reiterate what has worked for me. Originally I was set on playing from a fat32 ext. hdd as that is my preferred method with the 360 and wmv files. But the 360 can read from hfs+ formatted ext. hdd which doesnt have the 4gb file limit like fat32.

So, I started to realize maybe it wasn't the best method for playback on ps3 as the whole point of mkv2vob was a quick remux of mkv for compatible playback on ps3, but splitting the file took an extra step and time.

Using TVersity to let the ps3 see the file on your pc and then just copy it onto the ps3 internal hdd seems to be the best. I do it once just like transferring from pc to an ext. hdd and then i dont have to leave pc on to stream as the video file(s) are there on the ps3.

Now, as far as some mkv needed transcoding and others not, I loved how mkv2vob auto detects that for you and does what it needs to do. I can't understand ppl wasting media burning discs on files they aren't sure will work made from other programs wile mkv2vob ensures it will by autodetecting.

I just want to add that I think optical media is already kind of dated and will eventually be phased out by more and cheaper solid state options (hdd and memory cards etc.).

Now, my attitude with the mkv's and ps3 was that I would just usually go for the 1080p version if that was available, because I want the higher resolution. Its been said that the majority (i think 99% is quoted) of 1080p need to be transcoded, yes this takes longer and takes away a little from one of the main draws of this program of a quick remux of mkv to something compatible with ps3.

But I will say for a fact that it is 10x quicker then encoding an mkv to wmv. And yes it makes the file size larger, but again if you are using hdd then this doesnt matter as much. I've said before basically I just go with whatever mkv2vob needs to do, if it transcodes (to mpeg-2) cus its 1080p, I suck up the transcode time and the larger file size for the benefit of the higher res and the full ff/rw controls. Its more then worth it and thats probably my preference.

For the 720p stuff that can be remuxed to .vob (avc), I just appreciate the super fast remuxing and smaller file size at the sacrifice of no ff/rw controls.

But again my preference is 1080p transcoded to mpeg-2 because I dont mind the transcoding time (again its way way quicker then encoding to wmv) nor does the larger file size scare me. Now I will say that if doing a lot of 1080p that need to be transcoded and using the method of copying the file to the ps3 hdd then unless you dont have much on there (60gb) and just put like 3 movies at a time then remove them off there after you watch, you will prob want to upgrade the 2.5" sata in the ps3 which is no problem.

I'm looking into doing that but wanted to get a good price on the largest possible which is 320gb and wanted to make sure the ps3 can make full use of a 320gb 2.5" sata and didn't have a 250gb limit or something.

The only thing i'm thinking now with the 720p stuff that can be remuxed is that being there is no ff/rw, it may be worth splitting the file so at least you can watch half then the other half or whatever later and worst comes to worst if you have to start the clip over and do the slow 1.5 ff to get to where you left off (since it doesnt support resume either) then at least if your file is split you dont have as much to go through i dunno. So I figured maybe I will do the 720p remuxed vob stuff split and on fat32 again after all.

The only thing is, i still haven't heard of a prog that will split the finished .vob (already remuxed from mkv) into 3.99gb or smaller parts. So id have to just assume that most all 720p mkv were fine to be remuxed for ps3 and just split the mkv first then make a .vob of each split file using mkv2vob and selecting no to autodetect/transcode. that wasy the 720p stuff that can be remuxed and doesnt have ff/rw controls can go on the fat32 ext hdd and save room on the ps3 internal for the large transcoded mpeg-2's.

But that is extra work and defeats the purpose a little of the remux being quick, so I as someone else mentioned may also be interested in a program that just transcodes the mkv to mpeg-2 every time. Again I dont mind the time it takes so much to transcode nor the large file size as these days with a baby and coordinating watchign stuff with my wife, it seems the ability to resume where I left off plus full ff/rw etc. controls is vital.

I know some say, if your going to watch a movie then just watch it straight through. I feel the same way but when the wife falls asleep in the middle of the movie, even if i continue watching then for her to resume means she will have to ff at 1.5x (which is all the .vob's allow) which is really slow and is just like slightly faster talking etc. Its just not a very reasonable way to have to resume.

I just think the ability to resume and ff/rw is going to be more and more important to more ppl and the lack there of takes away from the usefullness of the quick remux. I think everyone is clear that it is the ps3's fault and not mkv2vob or any other program.

But, 3rlc, might I suggest maybe making an option in future version of mkv2vob to force transcode even if the file doesnt' neccesarily need it for playback on ps3. I mean the autodetect is great, only doing it if it needs it to play on ps3, where as ppl are using other progs like GotSent which doesnt have ps3 in mind and you can end up with a file that wont play on ps3 (especially wateful for ppl putting on discs) mkv2vob ensures you will have a file that is compatible on ps3.

But yeah maybe there should be 2 options. 1. Auto detect, transcoding only if neccesary. and 2. Force transcode no matter what.

I would think that would be all thats needed because why would anyone using this prog for ps3 playback (which is what it is made for) need to turn off auto detect, because if they make a.vob of a mkv that needed to be transcoded to play on ps3 well then they have a useless file.

Again I'm slightly torn between just remuxing to vob for the 720p stuff that doesn't need to transcoded and just splitting the file up for fat32 to make resuming or watching in parts a little easier and free up my ps3 internal hdd space for 1080p transcoded mpeg-2's but thats ultimately maybe not even worth it to have a split file with no ff/rw. unless i really did it multiple parts to ensure resuming is easier but thast more work and too many files and i'm still not sure if ps3 can play one after another from an ext. hdd like it does off an ext. fat32 hdd camcorder (though it prob does as its the same thing).

The problem with the .vob's with no resume or ff/rw is then when the wmv comes out (usually not too long after the x264 mkv) I end up just getting that if the version i currently have is a remuxed vob with no ff/rw which is then a waste that I got it in the first place and especially if split the file and all.

But if I have a 1080p mkv transcoded to mpeg-2 able to be copied to my ps3 itnernal and played anytime with pc off, then I wouldn't bother getting the WMV version, especially since most wmv releases are 720p (usually for the reason of fitting on dvd9). The only reason to ditch my mkv transcoded to mpeg-2 and get the wmv if the wmv is also 1080p would be for the smaller file size but that is kind of less important and as long as my mkv transcoded to mpeg-2 has the same resume, ff/rw controls as the wmv then I'd really have no good reason to reget something I already took the time to get and transcode etc. just for a diff file type.

so yes again, formal request here, as I saw someone else mention it also, to have an option in mkv2vob to force transcode (to mpeg-2 i guess is the only compatible choice) even for 720p mkv that dont neccesarily need it to play on ps3. For the ppl with kids and wives etc. or just really want/need resume, ff and rw etc.

i think I showed that one before but what does it mean and what can i do to it to get it to play on ps3 or 360? the MS in there is microsoft? in what prog can i look at this file to see exactly what it is so I know what type of prog to use on it to transcode or remux it?

I've used to extract h264 streams from mkv files and encoded the ac3 audio to aac and put everything into mp4 with yamb. Some worked and some didn't. Is my assumption correct that this had only to do with the supported avc level. If I change the level to 4.1 with h264info most of the streams should work even with mp4. Because I really like mkv2vob but sometimes I really do love to seek and the ps3 just won't seek with vob files. (Most were 720p not 1080p)

Well there are several ways of doing this. Either use Besweet with or without belight or do it the easy way: Just use MeGui.

could try to do the steps that mkv2vob does manually. It is pretty easy. All the executables are in the tools sub-directory.

first use command line to use mkvextract the mkv into two files (the first will be the video, second the audio).

note: you may have to do a additional step to convert the audio if it is not ac3 but am not sure on how to do that yet but i think you use tranzcode??

then use h264info gui to set the video stream to the 4.1 setting (as you see it do automatically).

then instead of using the default 23.976 that mkv2vob does just do the same ffmpeg command line manually using 25 as the frame rate like below.

ffmpeg -r 25 -f h264 -i video.h264 -f ac3 -i audio.ac3 -vcodec copy -acodec copy -f vob output.vob

where video.h264 is your extracted and patched video stream, and audio.ac3 is your audio stream.

Are you trying to convert 1080p as well? I have out of sync Audio with my 1080P mkv files as well lately. I have been trying to use AutoMKV and Ripbot264, but they take a looooong time when trying to downconvert 1080p ---> 720P.

Mkv2VOB and Ripbot264 authors should combine forces :eek:

it looks like it uses tranzcode to extract the dts file into a mux file then besweet to mix it back into ac3 stream. There is a newer version of tranzcode out there, you all may want to expirement with it instead of the one packaged with mkv2vob to see if you get better results with dts conversions.

also georg you can use options in besweet to set an audio delay but that means you would have to do all the steps manually including the mux batch for tranzcode stuff. there is a besweet gui out there but I am having issues getting it to work correctly. the beta .40 version of tranzcode seems to also handle ac3 files so you could correct audio sync issue with those too it looks like (though you shouldnt have that issue if your just copying ac3 in ffmpeg). I wouldnt mess with the video as 3r states it is fine.

also 25 fps is pal and 23.976 fps is ntsc.

if i get the error "Unsupported Video Codec: V_MS/VFW/FOURCC" when trying to use mkv2vob on an mkv, is it possible it is already in a format that plays on the ps3? when i used GotSent on it i saw it said something about it being an avi so maybe i can jsut rename the extension and it will play on ps3?

had an ep today that i used something on it to remux or transcode, i think mkv2vob didnt work on it, i had what seemed like a working file on ps3 but then a little into the show the video slowed down to a crawl for a few min, got normal here and there but then back to super slow or frozen. what is causing this?

What prog can just transcode these into mpeg-2? why is ps3 so frustrating like this? you get files that look like they work when you test only to find that when you go to watch them something happens a few minutes in and makes it unplayable. before this freeze up super slow mo problem i've had video files stop 10 min into the video and say unsupported, i could then ffwd back to that point and play and it would play for another 10 min before stopping and saying the same thing.

it makes it impossilbe to see what isworking and what isn't when you test files, they seem like they are working only to find they dont play in entirety without major problems.

mkv2vob already does this correctly.
this sync issue with 25fps was fixed months ago, make sure to use the latest version.

ignore the h264info error, its because your video height is 528 instead of 720, it doesnt matter.

i would say the problem might have something to do with all those "seek" headers in the mkv.
The a/v might not actually be in sync, the headers are just correcting it.

Do I close the h264 error popup when it happens or leave it?
How do I run the command line : ffmpeg -r 25 -f h264 -i video.h264 -f ac3 -i audio.ac3 -vcodec copy -acodec copy -f vob output.vob when my ffmpeg is here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Geo67\Desktop\tools
And do I have to give the names of the h264 and ac3 files?

could try to do the steps that mkv2vob does manually. It is pretty easy. All the executables are in the tools sub-directory.

first use command line to use mkvextract the mkv into two files (the first will be the video, second the audio).

note: you may have to do a additional step to convert the audio if it is not ac3 but am not sure on how to do that yet but i think you use tranzcode??

then use h264info gui to set the video stream to the 4.1 setting (as you see it do automatically).

then instead of using the default 23.976 that mkv2vob does just do the same ffmpeg command line manually using 25 as the frame rate like below.

ffmpeg -r 25 -f h264 -i video.h264 -f ac3 -i audio.ac3 -vcodec copy -acodec copy -f vob output.vob

where video.h264 is your extracted and patched video stream, and audio.ac3 is your audio stream.

but if you went that far, then to use ffmpeg you would go to where your files are and type

best to put this in a text batch file to make it easy to edit

From what I am seeing so far is if mkv2avg transcodes the video is where the audio sync issues seem to come from (ie you hit yes in the popup at the beginning). it seems that ffmpeg when it uses mpeg2video it is messing up the audio probably due to it being out of sync to begin with in the mkv file and the mkv file is using headers to correct it.

best thing that i found for those problem files is just say no to the transcode question and it will not encode to mpeg2, but will still transcode the dts audio to ac3, but even that may not fix your issue. you still may have to transcode the file to mpeg2 and play around with the audio sync options in ffmpeg.

well I used mkv2vob and GotSent on a bunhc of mkv tv eps and it made them .vob/.mpg but they only play for 5 min on the ps3 after which point every clip starts freezing going super slow and i see the kbps for audio and video dropping out when i have info up.

to have to play through each one at slow ff 1.5x just to get to between 4-6 minutes to see if it did it on each of 12 eps was a big waste of time whic is basically what video playback on theps3 ends up being.

i'm going strictly transcode to mpeg-2 now and hoping to find a program that does it. found a prog called super but it seems to do too much and more then i need it to in this case. need something simple that just makes an mpeg-2 for ps3 playback with no problems and full ff/rw controls.

what is your error? file not found? if so make sure your path to ffmpeg.exe is correct. also save it in a .bat file in the same directory as your video and audio streams. call it ffm.bat or something and run it.

but you lose the ac3 playback as the ps3 doesnt support ac3 in mp4 files from everything ive heard. hence the reason why 3r wrote this program (plus to save time and perserve the original quality of video and audio by just remuxing).

3r I found that this command line seems to sync up audio from out of sync source mks when using ffmpeg, you may want to play around with it. Seems to fix my issue with a mks that is out of sync after it is transcoded with ffmpeg.

nope looks like for mp4 its only AAC 2ch (no 5.1 option even in the "Super" prog for mp4 so its not a ps3 problem but just mp4 from mkv can only be done 2ch i guess?), so i wont be selecting mp4 as a choice anymore. I guess mpeg-2 is the best if you want mkv on ps3 with full ff/rw controls and 5.1 sound. i dont know why i bothered doing the mp4. I guess cus in 'Super', if you select ps3 as output file it automatically does mp4. why dont they offer mpeg-2 as a ps3 choice? it transcodes just as quick if not quicker I believe, it has the full ff/rw controls in ps3, and the benefit over mp4 of 5.1 sound with the one catch of the larger file size.

I wonder what other file formats work on ps3 that Sound can do (cus it can output to almost any video file type) and if there are any other choices that work, which is the fasted transcode with ff/rw controls and 5.1 sound. It probably is still mpeg-2 as the best bet but just curious.

I have used Super for everything else but the PS3. I didn't know it worked for it. Thanks for the info. Have you had success with 1080p mkv to MPEG-2 files? Mkv2VOB is an awesome program, but i still get out of sync Audio with 1080P files. I tried downconverting to 720p with AutoMKV and Ripbot264 and have had no success. AutoMKV took like a whole day for one movie to process the video, then it got to the audio portion and just looked at me dumb, lol. Ripbot just always hangs when it gets to H264.info part. I'll try Super:goodpost:

You must put " quotes around the path name if it has spaces in it man. Like my example.

dude your still not enclosing the path withen double quotes you only have a end quote you need to enclose the full path of the executable withen quotes like this but use your path "c:\ffmpeg\ffmpeg.exe"

then put the rest of your parameters after it.

ah glad to see someone else knew of and used Super. seems like a great prog but hadn't heard much about it. Yeah it has a ps3 output option but as I said that just does an mp4 with h.264/avc video codec. and at least from mkv, the only mp4 sound options are 2ch.

I dont know why they dont give you a couple of choices for ps3 playback, do they not realize that mpeg-2 plays on ps3 and has 5.1 (6ch) audio? the only drawback I thought was that mpeg-2 would be a considerably larger file and it is somewhat but I guess it depends on the bitrate, I just set the bitrate to as close to what the original mkv's was (double click your mkv after dragging it in there to see its specs) which is very useful. can't type in an exact bitrate but the drop down list will have something close to what the orig mkv bitrate was.

you choose ffmepg or MEncoder as the decoder and ffmpeg allows you to check DirectShow which supposedly can speed up the encode and increase quality but depends on a few variables. I just had a few that didnt work with DirectShow checked, you could see right away it just made a small file and stopped, but unchecking it makes an mpeg-2 fine.

Crazy how for one series, the only x264 720p mkv for each ep were mostly all different, but Super seems to work on them all. Can queue up a few at a time but since they seem to have diff bitrates i end up doing one at at time.

So far so good with Super on these particular mkv files after mkv2vob and GotSent didn't work.

I haven't dont many 1080p x264, but the ones I did mkv2vob seemed to transcode them to mpeg-2 perfectly with in sync audio and full ff/rw controls, with just the drawback of taking a little while (still much much less time then encoding mkv to wmv) and a larger file size (basically double).

I'm really not a fan of .vob avc now from mkv with no ff/rw controls so will prob only use mkv2vob for the 1080p mkv it transcodes, but at that point its prob best for me to just use Super to make mpeg-2.

But for some 720p mkv that are larger then just a tv ep, it may be tempting to do the quick remux to vob.

Just a shame Super uses mp4 with the 2ch audio for the ps3 output for ppl that dont know that mpeg-2 works perfect on ps3. I"m still wondering what other formats that mkv can be converted to and will play on ps3 but maybe thats it.

Yeah I didnt have much success with ripbot264 and i think i have automkv but dont use. Nothing worse then wasting time for it not to work which happens a lot with ps3 especially when it looks like the file works only to find it freezes up 5 min in or stops 10 min in.

I"m pretty impressed with Super to make mpeg-2 from mkv, simple enough yet enough settings to match it up with the original mkv which it lets you see all the specs of so there is no mystery.

i know i did 2hr 1080p mkv transcode to mpeg-2 using mkv2vob and it was only like 2-3 hrs and using Super on these 1hr eps also to mpeg-2 is like 45 min so no need to do anything that takes a whole day as you mentioned. Though I know encoding mkv to wmv can take 10-24hrs+ like that.

I want quick but i also want to retain quality and have ff/rw controls. so for mkv playback on ps3, mpeg-2 seems to be the way to go for me.
