View Full Version : New release of Media Player 6.4

Gabest,
First of all thanks for all your hard work on this player. It has quickly become my only player.
I know this has been brought up before, but I would like to second the request for a Forced full screen mode or default full screen mode.
When Playing movies for family/friends, there is a much greater dramatic effect to putting a dvd in the drive and going from full black screen to the movie auto-playing. (Vs going to file, open dvd, then full screen mode).
Your reasoning before was that this would not allow you to see error messages. However if the movie does not play, it will be obvious that something is wrong and then you can try again without full screen to see the error.
Thank you,
Yancy
PS Reply Post # 900 :-)

Hey, that's a similar idea to what I was thinking...
When a video is opened by MPC, MPC takes a default size until the movie parses, then assumes the size of the video.. Would it be possible to have MPC save the previous window size and automatically scale the video to the previous window size upon opening?

I totally agree and in fact I requested this feature a while ago. Having MPC start in window mode and switch to fullscreen only when it knows it can playback the media is the only think that is making me stick with Zoomplayer for my HTPC. It's a shame because I would like to use MPC instead.
For the same kind of purpose I have 2 additional requests:
* option to exit MPC automatically at the end of playback
* when in "forced" fullscreen mode, have MPC exit automatically in case of error
Gabest, maybe you could follow up on IE and Opera, and call the "forced" fullscreen mode: kiosk ;)

Hi !!!
One more suggestion for this great player...:p Just add a command line for chapters, because I would like to have the possibility to start at nth chapters...So, maybe a short command line like /startime=xxx ms or frames.
Thanks

In addition to Kurtnoise13 suggestion, don't forget to add starttime or frames in the playlist, for my multi disc slightly overlapping movies. And dont forget seamless playback! Thanks very much for your wonderful player.

When the playlist window is detached from the main MPC window, and "Remember last window position" is enabled, when MPC is restarted the playlist is no longer detached from the main MPC window. It would be great if MPC could remember that the playlist window's old position and that it was detached. ^.^

Possible bug:
When clicking the speed up arrow, the track increases speed to 2x correctly, but to go back to normal speed, clicking the slow down arrow makes it play at 0.5x instead of 1x. Doing the exact reverse works correctly, slowing down once, then speeding up brings it to the correct speed.
Feature request:
Clicking the play button when playing restores the normal 1x playback speed.

uneasy: If I select one or more file in explorer and choose to open them with wmp9, it also only loads one (the one I right clicked on). When multiple files are selected and launched then explorer runs the assocciated application for each file, for MPC this means it closes and opens each, replacing the previous files. But if multiple player instances are enabled, each file launches a new player of course. The most I can do now to allow more files in command line and all of them will end up on the playlist.
I'd like to see that too. ^_^
Edit: Random Thought: Once the Nero Team figures out the iTunes M4A tagging, will basic MPC tag reading (as seen with MP3/Vorbis/etc) be implemented for M4A/MP4? Maybe a full-fledged tag reading/writing system now that Matroska is here?
Again, thanks for all your hard work.

I'm having issues playing Shoutcast streams in MPC, I did a search and couldn't finda anything to solve my problem. I have a PLS playlist from Shoutcast (www.shoutcast.com) and whenever I try loading it, it causes MPC to hang indefinately. I tried loading the exact url listed in the PLS, but that produced the same result. I tried activating and deactivating the internal Shoutcast filter, but to no avail, it still did not work. Any help from anyone who got Shoutcast to work in MPC would be appreciated. ^_^

just wondering...
anyone using cmedia cmi8738 6ch with the lastest driver from windows update...?
when i open media files with media classic (6.4.5.7)
the soundcard will be automaticlly changed to 2 channel mode...?
is there anyway to keep it stay in 6 channel mode?
i tried to play with the custom channel mapping but no matter what i do the outcome is the same.....

How does it change to two channel mode? Do you mean the speaker configuration in control panel?

First I wish to say that you player, gabest, is really good. It's the only one I'm using now.
Second...I get a problema similar to intoxicated. I don't know if it's a known condition or something, but if i'm playing an mp3 in winamp for instance, and then open MPC, the sound quality changes dramatically. It gets a lot lower. Also, the volume bar in MPC controls the volume for the entire system, right? Because if I mute the volume in MPC, closes the program, and try to play anything in any other program, the volume is still muted.
That's it.
Thanks a lot for the wonderfull player (and Matroska filters, :) )

Longinus: This is only true if you are running a shockwave file, all other files have their own renderer and mpc changes their volume level. For dshow which audio renderer do you use, waveout or dsound? waveout may change the global, but that's not mpc's default choice, unless you changed it. Also, the sound quality depends a lot on the decoder, since winamp has its own and dshow players all have to use the fraunhofer filter (comes with windows), there might be a difference.

[There seems to be some stuttering every few seconds on heavily used SHOUTcast streams, WinAmp doesn't produce the same result. ;_; ]
Edit: Scratch that, there's stuttering across the board, they are just bad streams.
Edit2: It seems that once the stream plays for a while (> ~1 min) stuttering.
The title tag isn't updating for me either.
I'm using the built-in filter (the stand-alone doesn't seem to have been updated?), MPC 6.4.5.8.
Edit: I would really love an option to have the playlist open in a separate window upon opening of MPC (if the playlist was in a separate window upon the previous closing of MPC.), i.e. if the playlist could remember being separated from the main MPC window.

Wow. I just started using your player, and I have to say that it is by far the best. Easy enough reason: it's not cluttered up by a bunch of stupid bulls#!t. Really nice. And it syncs muxed subs on my system, which is a plus; neither BSplayer nor zoomplayer do.
Couple comments (or maybe suggestions?) though.
The player seems to randomly crash out when I play files. This happens almost 100% of the time when playing directly from a disc, unless I first open the player off a file on the hard drive and then from there open the files from the disc. This isn't unique to MPC though it does happen more often with it.
For some reason RM playback only triggers the nView overlay catcher in fullscreen. Taking it out of fullscreen, it'll play in the window but the image on the TV is locked.
Is there a way to make it autoresize itself to 100% zoom? It did originally I think, but I must have hit an option that I can't seem to find anymore. It keeps defaulting to this tiny little window now, and even after resize it doesn't keep trying to match size. For overlay catch/fullscreen it doesn't matter, for everything else I can use alt+2, but it's still a bit irritating :)
I have an MSI GF4-4200 with the vidcap and I can make it work in Vdub, but for some reason it doesn't work in MPC with the same settings, which is kind of a bummer because my only RCA inputs are on my SBLive, meaning I have to be able to pick both. :) Any idea what's wrong? I've tinkered with the settings and tried nearly every combo and nothing seems to work.
A couple suggestions: maybe a button on the toolbar or a preference to make the skip button go to chapters in formats with them? (Or maybe it does that already... I haven't been able to tell.) And desktop overlay would absolutely rock. Apart from that, really really cool. Never saw the point of skinning media players... why is it that the programs I look at the LEAST have the most skinning functions? (Music players spend 99% of their time minimized or behind something, video is always fullscreened...) Anyway, nice job. :)

I agree with the 1st one :))))
2nd) in the View -> Options -> Playback
check the Auto-zoom checkbox, and select the 100% in the Zoom drop-down menu ...

Media Player Classic can't seem to play really big wav files (3.28GB or 5 hours 33 minutes long). Arguably neither can the original media player 6.4 or media player 9 (says that the buffer is not big enough), but winamp, realone and quicktime cope fine, so media player classic should be able to do it (if you can detect the buffer not being big enough error you could probably play the wav through either the real media or quicktime interface).

Hi DC.
Could it be possible for RM content to switch between RealMedia and DirectShow from the file extension automaticly?
Thanks!!! :D
gabest
30th July 2003, 02:29
Sirber: Maybe I'm not understanding very well what you asked, but it is already based on the file extension. Only those files which have the extension from the two real media format categories will be opened through real's engine, unless you changed it to directshow of course, then it will use the new dshow filters.
wertherman: Once I wanted to make a new wave reader, but after reading about how hacked format it was at www.wotsit.org, I decided not to...

Hello,
Thanks for the great player; it's full featured, yet streamlined, a paradox that somhow holds true for your player. It's been playing my AVIs flawlessly and I am really glad to use this great program.
However, I am having some strange issues with OGMs that have subtitles. I'm using MPC 6.4.5.8. My standard configuration is to use the DirectX 9 renderless output mode. In this configuration, an OGM with subs freezes upon open. The only way to unfreeze it is to turn off the subs from the OGM system tray icon. Then is plays, displaying exactly one subtitle, before continuing without subs. This happens regardless of whether I seek before turning off the subs.
I decided to try using the rendered and overlay output modes, and the same freeze on open occurs. However, this freeze does not end by turning subs off. Regardless of whether subs are on or off, seeking ahead fixes the freeze, however, subtitles are not displayed.
My guess is this is a conflict between your subtitle rendering built into the player and the subtitle renderer of the OGM DShow filter. I tried unchecking auto-load subtitles in a last effort, but this had no effect.
If I've messed up some setting or something, I'd appreciate some advice. If this is a bug, I hope my description can help you squash it - this is a great player that I hope can get such bugs resolved so it can really shine.

About the OGM subtitle bug: I had exactly the same problem, with 6.4.4.7 and 4.8 (haven't tried others), when I installed it on a new computer. Installing VSfilter solved the hanging and now everything works - so my guess is that it might have to do with somehow broken reporting of unrendered pins (normally works) or something like that.

Thank you, Yusaku.
I was a little wary at first of installing vsfilter because I could not get ffdshow and DirectVobSub to work together a while back, I believe version 2.09 of DirectVobSub. I gave it a try, though, and it's working great. Of course, I had to rack my brains to remember the DLL registering program. They should just pack a small readme with the file. I wonder if this subtitle bug will be fixed in the next MPC, though. Currently, VSfilter is serving no function except to rest happily in the system tray while MPC renders the subtitles. Oh well...
Now I just have to get used to turning off my anti-aliasing before watching videos.

kilg0r3:
firstly it's VMR and not WMV...
Overlay uses a dedicated display surface originally implemented in cards around 1995. Quality differs between cards, I find overlay quality rather sucks on all cards.
VMR7 still uses overlay, but adds a few image composition features that hardly anyone really uses.
VMR9 moved everything to Direct3D. The video is rendered on a polygon and scaled using the 3D hardware. You get a better scaler so the image isn't as pixelated or aliased as with the Overlay. And since the overlay is not in use, you can have multiple hardware assisted videos open at once on multiple monitors.

Thanks Blight! Just one last question: What's the difference between the windowed and renderless modes?

In renderless mode, the vmr doesn't renderer the picture on screen, instead it passes it as a dx surface to a module supplied by the player.

Hello
I am having a problem with MPC 6.4.5.8 and subtitles. I have set Playback==>Output==>Video==> to Video Mixing Renderer 9 (renderless). Still the option to load subtitle in File menu is greyed out and subs arn't displayed. I have the Vob file and the srt file with the same name in the same directory. I was using BSplayer (latest stable and nightly build) to show the subs with DirectVobSub and it worked fine except I prefer the MPC interface and BSplayer was introducing artifacts into play back (looked like a noise filter or something had been applied to the picture it was all 'dotty' you could see little dots making up the picture). I am using the Powerdvd 4 XP filters with Hardware mode on and Auto BOB/Weave on. When I play it back just through Power DVD the picture is perfect.
Any way back to MPC.
I couldn't get MPC subtitles to work as explained above so I tried using DirectVobSub 2.23, but it won't load with MPC or Powerdvd. I have set it to always load and placed it in MPC filter list, but it still won't run (no green arrow in system tray). It runs with BSPlayer though, due to artifacts mentioned previously I'd like to use MPC instead.
I have read this whole thread looking for solutions! (took a while I can tell you) and searched and searched.
I have a Radeon 9800Pro, running Cat 3.6 Drivers, perhaps that is the problem with VMR 9 and MPC built in subtitle support. Though if it is a vid driver problem it does not explain why bsplayer works with directvobsub and MPC doesn't. I am also running Windows XP and have DirectX9b.
What am I missing?
Thanks
Update:
I just found that it is DirectVobSub introducing the artifacts, horizontal type lines and dots like compression artifacts. So my main goal now is to get MPC built in subtitle support to work as DirectVobSub is introducing artifacts for me.
I tried VMR7 Renderless as well as VMR9 Renderless still subs won't display :(
Yusaku
1st August 2003, 14:54
(wild guess, post detailed system info - when there is not subtitle support in renderless mode, it means it is not working and it performed fallback to default renderer)
1) do you have DirectX 9 installed? VMR7 renderless works only with WinXP
2) do you have some recent videocard drivers? Default OS drivers won't get you far concerning DirectX interface.

Oops, I better wake up before I post next time... Are other Direct3D applications working fine?
