Forgive me if this has already been answered, searched through this thread but didn't find an exact answer.

I know PC mode is preferred for gaming presumably for the low latency and better image/text in 4:4:4. However, if I am running in non PC mode to avoid banding in HDR, etc. won't the latency be the same as in PC mode if I am in using the game preset in non PC mode?

Just wondering but how important is 4:4:4 chroma actually in games, or when doing stuff like Photoshop, and what white point are you all using for the C8/C9 model D65 looks too green for me.

Also has it ever been mentioned why exactly there is more banding in PC mode?

senzaparole

I have activated PC mode but I have not notice any band

Watch Episode 3 "the Long Night" of season 8 of Game of Thrones in HDR... What a banded mess in PC mode!

Are you able to get no frame drops in 4k without using SM? If so, can you share what you have done?

Thanks

I get frame drops but they're not too bad. I didn't do anything special. One of these days I should probably use CRU to create a custom resolution to make it even better. I forget exactly what the rate of drops I'm getting now is but I can live with it until I get motivated. Ideally you want to find a way to make 1 drop every 3+ hours. Anything over that is good.

Update: Doing great under RTX 2060 442.19 studio driver. No frame drops!

I was wondering how did you come up with those values?

FYI for those who are considering in switching to the video refresh rates, I have observed that under 4k refresh rates, 23FPS is the only one that is not supported under the EDID.
This needs to be customized in CRU. Using chros example, we are able to achieve a flawless playback under this setting.

Just beware of that example: if your original edid values are different it can cause issues. Now you made me curious what's your C9 (in your setup) edid values are (reported by madvr).

That's strange, your attached image tells the same, but I swear that madvr had an EDID row on that screen for me.

So, these're - again - the very same values that I got on mine and Mark on his.

So, the conclusion is, if you have these (preferably EDID) values and you have only couple of minutes reported by madvr OSD, then you can try to use my values (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1868998#post1868998) in CRU without the need for measuring it with madvr.

Anyone else using a higher Gamma with their 2016 models? I noticed with my c9 that I found the low light scene compression handling remarkable. By far the biggest upgrade in picture quality for me was due to that. In running black crush test patterns I noticed that the lower IRE's had much less brightness than on the C6. With my C6 and a 3DLUT i used MadVR to process a 2.6 pure Power Gamma to achieve similar results. It made low light, grainy and high compression noise scenes really look so much better. Not quite the C9 level but a huge upgrade nonetheless.

The previously mentioned method wasn't reliable, so I came up with this "mpc-be.cmd" script for MPC-BE/HC with the help of aiopylgtv (https://github.com/bendavid/aiopylgtv) (witten in python) and psshutdown (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/psshutdown):

REM Script to run mpc-be and commands after it exited

cd d:\Progs\MPC-BE\

mpc-be64.exe && aiopylgtvcommand 192.168.1.78 power_off && C:\Windows\psshutdown.exe -d -t 00

How to use it:
- create a shortcut for it on the desktop and run it if you need this functionality
- set "Exit" (!) in "After Playback" in the player if you want them to turn off (e.g. with this remote (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1823602#post1823602))
- you can still close the batch window (it doesn't close the player) if you don't want to turn them off

What are your guys thoughts on Lgs dynamic tone mapping?

It's unpredictable and often brightens midtones. So for many it doesn't follow the PQ curve.
Otherwise, in my opinion it makes some scenes too bright for no reason.

VBB
25th March 2020, 21:40
I used it for a while, because it made things seemingly brighter, but for about a year now, I've had it disabled, and I will never look back. It just messes with the picture in ways I do not appreciate.

SamuriHL
25th March 2020, 23:29
I can't stand it personally. Especially once you calibrate your display and use madvr for tone mapping, the limitations of LG DTM are glaring. As others have said, it badly messes with the picture in not so pleasant ways.

Thanks for these values! Finally I have perfect playback with madvr. Do you happen to have timings for 59 hz and 25 hz?

I actually don’t have any 25 hz content, but I do have Gemini man at 59 hz and it’s dropping frames every minute.

Be certain that's a timing issue and not a rendering issue. That's a much more demanding framerate for UHD playback in madvr.

It’s a timing issue. My render times are at 10 ms and the render time for 60 hz is at slightly above 16 ms.

SamuriHL

Ok, just wanted to rule that out because 60Hz UHD's are punishing depending on settings used. Hopefully someone has the timings you're looking for on that one.

Oh yeah, I had to turn chroma to jinc to keep it under 16 ms. I can’t use pixel shaders dynamic tonemapping either. Just pass through hdr.

I tried measuring the timings myself, but madvr is giving me an error that says the gpu has rejected it. It does it for both 59 and 60 hz in the custom mode.

Thankfully both 24 FPS and 25 FPS content plays perfectly with nvidia default timings. So the only content I can’t properly play back is 59/60 hz content.

I copied your settings. The result seems a little better to me. I leave your settings. I have activated LG's dynamic tone mapping.

I created only one profile for HDR.

I created several profiles instead in scaling:

LG's Tone Mapping is NOT recommended. I used to think it was a good addition, but now every time I turn it on to see what it looks like for reference, I immediately turn it back off... it does more harm than good

As for my HDR profiles... it is only for the TWO movies so far that have been released that are 4k60p... I have even more scaling profiles setup... Thanks for the tip, but I have been using profiles since they were added to madVR :)

I write some considerations:

1. if I change the value of "dynamic target nits" I don't see any differences. For what reason?

2. if I activate LG's dynamic tone mapping, I only see a small but pleasant increase in brightness. I have not found any defect. I'm sorry to disable LG's DTM.

Are you able to play back 59.940 content like geminiman back without frame repeats?

The default 59 hz repeats frames every 40 seconds and nvidia won’t let me do custom timings for 59 or 60 hz. It keeps getting rejected.

QBhd
6th April 2020, 09:31
I don't use nVIDIA so I have no idea how you would go about setting custom resolutions... I just recently started using WASAPI audio renderer (I did not use this when I watched Gemini Man) and now there are no values reported back for clock deviation... I am not entirely sure I am going to keep this setup, but it does do away with the need for custom resolutions, or at least it seems to for the content I have watched so far.

The timings are measured in madvr and they are rejected. If I enter it into cru the resolution just won’t show up in Nvidia control panel.

I’m using Tapatalk, so I’m not seeing a signature.

Read again the old post I wrote the 24p values: using CRU won't add anything to NVCP but replace the set refresh rate in the operating system level!
That's the whole point using CRU (instead of madvr + NVCP)!

They actually do show up for me in pc resolutions when I use cru. My custom 66 hz 4k shows up as well as my 23.976 refresh rate which is listed as 24 hz. I dropped back to a previous driver and imputed edid timings into cru (59.940 hz)and it actually did show up in nvcp this time as 60 hz.

Unfortunately I’m still repeating frames every 40 seconds.

I wanted to use madvr to measure timings that wouldn’t repeat frames and then just use cru to make the custom resolution. Unfortunately with the previous game ready drivers I still get the driver rejection error.

I might have to drop back to way older drivers, but then I’d lose gsync functionality and I do game, so it wouldn’t be worth it.

40 seconds is typical issue of 23.976 fps played back at 24.000 Hz, see intel HD 24p bug.

Here it is similar, your 59.940 fps file is played back at 60.000.

It is the fps:1.001 which causes the 40 seconds issue.

I’ve tried turning off switching in madvr and just using 59 hz and get the same thing. Composition rate is reading 59.940, but my display is something like 59.913 which definitely isn’t 60 hz.

After several tests, I decided to go back to the HDR to SDR conversion.
My settings are these:

Tips?

which definitely isn’t 60 hz.

You want 59 Hz.

Please be sure to know the basics of refresh rates:

23 Hz -> is for 23.976 which is exactly 24.000/1.001 Hz
24 Hz -> is for 24.000 which is exactly 24.000 Hz
50 Hz -> is for 25.000 Hz / 50.000 Hz and is exactly 50.000 Hz
59 Hz -> is for 29.970 Hz / 59.940 Hz and is exactly 60.000/1.001 Hz
60 Hz -> is for 60.000 Hz and is exactly 60.000 Hz

The other refresh rates are irrelevant because you want to playback your interlaced content like it should be viewed with "double motion resolution" of 25 Hz/29 Hz at 50 Hz/59 Hz
