@jmac698

ok, I will put CC support in my ToDo list

@rendez2k

source title audio track should be DVD compliant (DTS @16bit) and AVStoDVD should have kept it without re-encoding. Instead Aften+Wavi started with 1536 kbps bitrate setting (wrong, not supported by AC3). Have you changed anything in 'Edit Title'/'Audio'?

Nope! Just left everything as is and hit start! Tried another MKV and it worked fine. Re-tested this one and it failed :-(

...
You also have to set a flag in the IFO file.

I have never gotten CC to work in DVD. IFOedit doesn't let me set the flag, and ccmux didn't seem to work.

Jmac, did you ever try using AVS2DVD (current release) and feeding it with a m2v file with the user data containing CC information?

I feel it should work!

I mean, if you make a suitable (off line) preparation of the m2v assets, by using the SCC tools, the closed caption information should be - in theory - kept unaltered by the AVS2DVD operations and by the underlying muxing engine (MuxMan). This should also take care of the VBV potential issues raised elsewhere.

Concerning the setting of the IFO flags, this operation should be also NOT NECESSARY, since the IFO files are produced directly by MuxMan, at the end of the muxing stage, in a way that makes these files consistent with the input assets. In other terms, if the m2v assets contains CC, MuxMan should detect this situation and should produce (together with the other files) also suitable IFO files.

Sir,
Thanks! That's the best answer I've had. I will try again. It sounds like if I use muxman directly I can do it. I did look at muxman but found no mention of cc or user data. I had one hope that usiing ifoedit to set the flag would only be enabled if the input stream actually had cc data, so that would make more sense.

@jmac698 I've not followed this thread very carefully, so maybe you have reasons for wanting to keep CC, but you do know don't you that a tool called CCextractor will readily convert closed captions to .srt files, which you can use to make conventional DVD subtitles.

could you please post a screenshot of 'Edit Title'/'Audio' tab? I would like to understand how AVStoDVD has messed up the audio section of that mkv title...

Sure! Posted my settings also just in case. Could the MKV be damaged? I've run another couple of MKVs through with no issue.

@MrC
Thanks for the welcome... I have been totally absorbed by some personal and professional duties in the last months/years, but I am still following - in a more or less continuous way - the AVS2DVD developments, at least as a "silent" users...
:cool:

@laserfan
Your suggestion is an excellent shortcut, however IMHO there are still very valid reasons and use cases for adopting CC in the DVD production. CC can be (optionally) showed TOGETHER - I mean, simultaneously - with a given subtitle stream. For instance, for hearing impaired people the CC is an optimal solution in order to preserve the original DVD content, including the original subtitles. There are no other ways, AFAIK, to present simultaneously two streams of subtitles: one - the classical subpictures - based on bitmaps, and the second - the CC - which is based on pure textual information...

Cheers,
SD

@rendez2k

I'm trying to replicate the issue with the sample files in my library, but I cannot. Do you have the possibility to upload somewhere a portion of the mkv?

@Sir Didymus

actually no big improvements in the past months... just some more encoding options and GUI maquillage. No progresses on the authoring side. I'm waiting for BatchMux native support to nested chapters menus :p

Ho, ho...
:scared:

Sigh... I think I have to admit very frankly that I completely missed to make whatever improvement to the BatchMux frontend...

I an not in the position to ensure anything... Please consider that the topic is much more complex than it may appear at a first glance...

However, from an old PM discussion, I remind that the pending relevant improvements, from the authoring support side, are:

1. To save the BatchMux echo into a log file instead of using the stdout
2. To add audio/subs submenus for the language selection
3. To add chapters submenus, in order to select the chapters

Is the above list still complete?

Cheers,
SD

Whats the best way to make a sample of an MKV? And how long would you need?

MrC
14th October 2011, 21:05
@Sir Didymus

I'm sure the topic is absolutely complex and I know (and appreciate) the scrupulous way you have developed BatchMux. No hurry, take your time, when the update will be ready, we will be here. ;) And, sure, from my side the list is complete. I don't know if other users would require anything else... :)

@rendez2k

I would use Avidemux:

- load the mkv
- trim the first minute
- select Copy Video and Audio (default)
- select MKV as output format
- save

Avidemux could eventually fix mkv muxing errors (if any).

;)

Well, Avidemux also failed (just an unspecified error when saving). So, I used mkvmerge and that worked OK. I retested the sample and that still failed with AVStoDVD.....

I got .mkv file made from BD. The DAR is 2.353. When I convert to DVD program change DAR to 16:9. Is it possible to keep DAR 2.353?

Thanks,

@shreeit

2.353 DAR is not DVD compliant.

bug found, it is releated to the combination of PAL-SpeedUp and DTS track. Next release will fix it. Now, as workaround, go to 'Preferences'/'Audio' and toggle off 'Keep AC3/DTS/MP2 DVD Compliant Audio', save as default and restart your project.

Hello there. I'm frustrated. I keep getting the "output video duration shorter than expected" error and I don't know why. As soon as I get the error, I choose not to continue, who would?, and I click 'no' which aborts the whole thing. I'm working with an MKV file, but I've also gotten the error with an mp4 video. Here's the log.

hmm I've been having countless audio failed errors since installing and no matter how many different setting setups I try I couldn't figure it out! I use the pal speed up function and use mkvs usually with dts audio. I wonder if this has been my issue :D

MrC,
Regarding the feature request for CC, I found two tools which do this and at least one has source. It seems compatible with muxman as well. I haven't tried the methods yet but I can tell you if they work; in that case you have some simple binaries you can just call from your GUI and it's done. Should be simple.

Hi Mrc,

Can you plan in to do list to save batch process when you save the current project? I had sometimes for some reasons to reboot computer in remote and i want to save batch but doesnt supported yet.

Also, the magnetic suggestion for the batch windows ;-) *Already replied that you put in to do list*

Thanks :-)

Do you mean when running through the wizard? Not that I'm aware of. I run the wizard, then go to the editor, change the titles and disc menu text, then exit the editor, is there a step I'm missing?

So I attempted several changes to the menu options and still getting the error. So I went and downloaded the Beta release (2.4.0 build 110422) and over wrote my AVStoDVD directory which kept all my settings. Again attempted the same DVD and this time it worked with no problem. It appears the new version is failing when "generating dvd background" then it is supposed to launch quenc, which is working properly in the beta release. Any ideas? Was a fresh install required for 2.4.1?

Was a fresh install required for 2.4.1?

See Help/FAQ/General/Q1.7:

Q1.7 When I download a new release, should I uninstall a previous installed one?
A: Yes, that's a better choice.

Thanks MrC your works appreciated here :D.

I was just wondering whats the best media player to have installed? I don't have windows media player 12 installed cos it messes with my music folder which I don't like!! So for music I use MusicBee and normally have vlc for my video playback but with this combo I'm having problems converting mkv to dvd (no audio or audio errors) So after reading the FAQ I installed FFDshow and this fixed the probs I was having. So I guess my question is whats the best setup Ie media players and filters? should I stick with vlc + FFDshow or go for a mediaplayer that has filters avstodvd can use? I like the cleanest sytem possible :D (think I have OCD).

Whats everyone else doing???

Hope its ok posting this here

Cheers M.

Hi MrC,

I have a bunch of MPEG2 files with 160kbps mp2 audio I'd like to put on DVD losslessly. But AVStoDVD insists on doing a full audio encode instead of a Direct Stream Copy. I think the DVD specification supports 160kbps audio. Would you think about adding 160kbps audio Direct Stream Copy support?

Thanks,

Sjakko

Taurus

can it open *.vob files?
Yes we can!
Reading the ? Help and search for "vob" in the Help will give you some hints.
But better practice: Open the coresponding ifo file to avoid lags and other trouble with your vobs.
And of course: They must be copyrightprotectedfree :D
And why don't you try to open your vobs with AVStoDVD?
Is there an error message?

dado023

got it,... drag and drop for *.vob wont work, but Add tittle works fine

Can I request a feature for some sort of bit allocation for the opening/end credits?

Or is there a custom AVS function I can add in manually?
An average of 2-2.5mbps would suffice for credits.

abyss616
13th January 2012, 01:35
@MrC: When you tell the program to encode a 720x480 file in 16:9 format, why does it crop 36 pixels off the top and bottom? In the Avisynth tab, it resizes it (720,480,0,-36,0,36 - something to that effect, going off memory).

MrC
13th January 2012, 10:56
@Big Vern

some trials:
- uninstall and reinstall AviSynth
- uninstall every kind of codecs pack and use only ffdshow stable releases
- use QuEnc CBR 1-pass encoding profile

@Sjakko

will do

@dado023

that's strange: from my side drag and drop works with vobs

@Sparktank

please elaborate a little bit more your request

@abyss616

there's no general rule: it depends on the input file width, height and DAR.

@Sparktank

please elaborate a little bit more your request

I remember using an old, dated program, AutoGK.
It had a function in the hidden options to change the bitrate for the end credits to allow the rest of the video to have a little bit more bit allocation.

Basically, tell the program to encode a certain section at a lower bitrate.
For example, if the end credits start at 1:26:21 and ends at the end of the file (let's say 1:29:01) and you want to that window of time to be encoded at a CBR of 2mbps, this would allow the rest of the movie to allow more room for bit peaks.

End credits are, normally, white text on black background. Unless they're they're fancy like in Star Trek (2009) or have credits scrolling by on one side and outtakes/bloopers on the opposing side (like most Jackie Chan movies).

Usually I notice that frames with large sections of text require more bit allocation. (While watching the movie on Cyberlink's PowerDVD and on-screen "Information" enabled, it shows the bitrate fluctuating as the movie plays; or even playing a movie back with FFDshow set as the default decoder and OSD enabled with bitrate showing).

If we make the entire end credits (based on start time and end time of the credits) a CBR, or even lower it to an average bit rate, this would help a little bit for movies that are closer or beyond 2 hours.

Cinema Craft Encoder has similar bit rate allocation as AutoGK, but more advanced, of course.

I hope that helps a little more.

I can look up some documentation on "bit rare allocation" if that helps.

MrC

@Sparktank

ok, got it. That sounds interesting.

Solution 1
Two different encoding parts (m2v), to be joined by Muxman during the authoring step.

Solution 2
Use the *ZONE command from HCenc. You can already use it by "Edit encoder command parameters at runtime".

Let me think about it and verify the result of encoding @2mbps a standard credit footage.

Thanks for the suggestion

;)
