Oh, and disabling the ffdshow decoder cause AVStoDVD to hang. Apparently, NicDTSSource doesn't like loading a .m2ts file as a source, which is understandable.

Yes, NicAudio filters accept audio only streams. You should say to AVStoDVD to demux the DTS stream when loading the input file (check the option box on the lower left side of the audio selection window).

Yeah, I thought of that after I posted the previous response.

I've got an encode with Quenc running back home, so I'll see how that turns out and test with NicDTSSource.

Adub
9th January 2010, 20:37
Okay, so the Quenc trick works with DTS-HD. Yey! One Blu-ray to DVD conversion down!

Now, I'm trying my Dark Knight Blu-ray. Several problems so far.

1) When extracting the main AC3 source, FFMPEG gets 88.06 seconds into the audio track, and then just sits there, eating CPU cycles.
2) When I attempt to extract the main TRUEHD track, I get the following error:
http://mirror.adubvideo.net/truehderror.png

I'm updating my FFDShow build (fixes an error with ffmpeg-mt) and then I'll try using AC3 loaded directly (no demux). I expect that this will work just fine.

Adub
10th January 2010, 03:46
Okay, even using the AC3 source, it fails. Here is the error.

http://mirror.adubvideo.net/ac3error.png
After I close the crash window, it says: "ERROR: Could not write to standard output"

After I close the main cmd window, FFMPEG comes up and tries to give the audio stream a try, and then proceeds to pause at around 85~88 seconds.

Something definitely fishy is going on here.

MrC
10th January 2010, 14:00
The first successful attempt with QuEnc was done demuxing the DTS-HD track or reading the container as it is? What about trying again with QuEnc on the Dark Knight Blu-ray?

AVStoDVD release 2.2.5...
Change log:
...
- Added Text (Subtitles) info reading using MediaInfo.dll
- Added possibility to demux Subtitles streams (SubRip SRT and VobSub IDX/SUB format) when processing Matroska contaneirs with Subs
- Added support to Unicode and UTF-8 text format for SubRip SRT Subtitles
- Added support to MKVExtract (if already installed - not included in AVStoDVD Installer package) to demux audio and subs from Matroska containers
...
Any feedback is welcomed, as usual.

Hi, MrC...

I found your great program just recently as I was searching for something to convert my hd.mkv to DVD for my parents to watch on their dvd player...and your program is GREAT. Fast (one hour per 720p movie), no bugs found so far, stable, predictable (meaning you get what you set it to make)...

One thing that was missing (for me) is ability to demix subs from mkv and put them into dvd (I do this, mix my subs into mkv, so a don't have to worry about them later...).

A now, you say you made that too!! WHOA!!!

But, I can't find where to 'activate' this feature...as it doesn't work 'out of the box'...

Using title info, I get all the sub streams, but how to select one (or more of them) into DVD?

Also, DTS audio track was not processed, but that is not my first concern now...Subs are what I need...

Great work MrC, keep it coming....

Hi glisoni,

when dealing with mkv having subs, AVStoDVD prompts an small option window showing the selectable subs. BUT following conditions must be fulfilled:

- source file is a matroska container
- vobsub/UTF-8 subs tracks are present
- 'mkvextract.exe' file is detected in the system (path is taken from reg key 'HKLM\SOFTWARE\mkvmergeGUI\GUI\installation_path')

Do you get that subs option window?

;)

Well,

I fixed the 3. issue, but still no success. It does register external subs, if they are in the folder, but embedded are not detected...

This is the log:

'21:16:35' AVStoDVD Release 2.2.5 loaded!
'21:16:35' AviSynth 2.5.8 is installed.
'21:16:35' ImgBurn is installed ("D:\util\ImgBurn\ImgBurn.exe").
'21:16:35' MKVExtract is installed ("D:\util\video_tools\mkvtoolnix\mkvextract.exe").
'21:16:35' New AVStoDVD Project started!
'21:16:49' MediaInfoLib - v0.7.25 initialized.
'21:16:49' Title 1 "F:\movie\OK\.HD_720\Pandorum\Pandorum.mkv" added.
'21:17:46' Subs "F:\movie\OK\.HD_720\Pandorum\1\Pandorum_Trac.srt" added to Title 1.

I added the sub file manually...

Any ideas?

MrC
Quenc was used on the container as-is. I will try using Quenc encoding from the container as-is on the TrueHD track. If that fails, I will try with the AC3 track.

It's odd that Quenc can handle any of these sources, but ffmpeg and wavi+aften fail...

MrC

@glisoni

You do not get any option windows, don't you? One possible cause could be the UTF format of the embedded subs: only UTF-8 is accepted so far. Could you copy&paste here the mediainfo of your mkv (subs section)?

@Adub

yes, you are right, it is quite odd... QuEnc is a ffmpeg spinoff... It could be Wavi having problem with DTS-HD tracks.

MrC,

so far so good, it detected the subtitle track, and is demuxing it.
But, when I tried 'edit title' app crashed on me ('index out od bounds - runtime error 35600' error), or any other option from context menu.

Hi all,

I've been using AVStoDVD to create DVD's of some off-air recordings of some of my favorite shows. The last time I used it was in June, and I'm finally getting around to creating some DVD from my recordings again.

Anyway I upgraded to the latest release 2.2.5 and went about doing what I did before. I use HCenc 023 to create the video files in a DVD compatible format, demux the AC3 audio, and grab the subtitles using CCExtractor.

Once HCenc is done I can usually fit three episodes on one DVD (4.7 GB). The total file size of the three m2v files, ac3 files, and srt files I created is about 3.94 GB leaving plenty of room for AVStoDVD to create motion menu clips, and put it all together. So I did this and had it output to a DVD folder structure which I then burn using Nero.

Here's the problem: The total size of the output folder is 2.16 GB which is smaller than the original files! AVStoDVD appears to have passed through the m2v files since they were already DVD compliant as it should. But for some reason each episode only contains about 21 minutes of video when it should be about double that. Everything (the video, audio, and subtitles) works perfectly for those 21 minutes, but then it just cuts off. It looks like the second VOB file is missing, e.g. "VTS_01_1.VOB" is there, but "VTS_01_2.VOB" is not. Also I notice that at the final step when the muxman progress is displayed, it gets to 50% and then, suddenly jumps to 100% and AVStoDVD tells me the process completed successfully, even though it did not. I'm pretty sure that the problem has to do with this last step.

I'm willing to send you anything you need to help figure this out, but I'm really frustrated here. I never had any problems with AVStoDVD before, and I'm hoping I can get things back up and running. Thanks in advance.

@QuadraQ

1st question: why don't you use AVStoDVD to do all the steps from source files to DVD?

2nd question: if you feed directly MuxMan with your footage (m2v+ac3+sup), do you get same issue?

Moreover a log file could surely help.

1) I'm using some specific things in the AVS script that help avoid some stuttering problems when the second third graphics are placed on screen. It also allows me to break up the job into parts, instead of one long process.

2) I've always used AVStoDVD to do this... I see that it has a GUI, so I'll give it a shot and let you know the results.

The log file and the project file are attached in a zip. Thank you.

OK I tried loading in one of my m2v files with the corresponding ac3 file. I tried also adding the srt file, but muxman doesn't support that type, so you must be doing some conversion there. With just the video and audio it worked fine, creating both the first and second VOB files which played fine using Nero's DVD player software. All of the video and audio were there.

I used version 0.16.6 to do this test since that's the latest version. (Updating the muxman in AVStoDVD's folder for it was one of the first things I tried, but it didn't help. I still have the original version of muxman AVStoDVD installed available.)

UPDATE: OK I restored the original 0.15R version of muxman that comes with AVStoDVD and tried the same test (again just the video and audio) and it gave me this error at the end:

---------------------------
Multiplex operation halted
---------------------------
Failed to open vob file C:\Users\My Name\Videos\Temp Files\DVD\VTS_01_1.VOB, multiplex pass 2
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

However when I check the directory, the two vob files are there (along with the ifo file) and contain all the video and audio content.

QuadraQ

FOLLOWUP: I was able to get things working by first muxing the m2v and ac3 files using ImagoMPEG-Muxer. Then I pull the resulting mpg files in and add the srt files. Now it's outputing correctly with all the video, audio, and subtitle content. I burned the DVD and tested it and everything was good. So the problem must be related to the differences between a single mpg file and the separate m2v and ac3 files.

Separate question: Whenever I use srt files created using CCExtractor 0.53 I get the following error message when building the DVD directory in AVStoDVD:

---------------------------
Illegal characters encountered!
---------------------------
Subtitle contains illegal characters, e.g. non closing brackets <. Please fix before continuing!
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

I usually get it twice for each title I add to the project. I click OK to dismiss it, and the end result appears to be working fine despite the error messages. Do I need to convert the srt format to something else? What problems could result from illegal characters? I could attach a sample srt file if that would be helpful.

MrC
15th January 2010, 14:00
Muxman accepts subs in 2 different format: IfoEdit (.sup) or Scenarist (.sst). When you have a SubRip Text (.srt) format, AVStoDVD converts it to .sup and then author it. You can do that step manually using SubtitlesCreator, a sw that comes with AVStoDVD package. Be careful to setup the screen layout (font, size, position). If your srt file has problems, then SubtitlesCreator should inform you about that.

If CCExtractor supports IfoEdit (sup) output format, you should use that option instead to convert them to srt.

What happens if you feed the m2v+ac3 (not muxed) to AVStoDVD without the srt?

;)

You think you could add deadzone quantization to the hc options? Or I way I can use it with your program? Thanks for your time.

QuadraQ

What happens if you feed the m2v+ac3 (not muxed) to AVStoDVD without the srt?

The first thing I tried was to remove the srt files from each title. I thought since I was getting the error messages, they might be the reason for the vob files cutting off prematurely. However they had nothing to do with it, because feeding in just the m2v files with their ac3 counterparts alone, gave me identical results sans subtitles. The vob still cut out at exactly the same place.

Conversely when I tried the already muxed mpg files, I added the srt files as well - after all removing them hadn't helped before, so I might as well include them. Sure enough the vob files came out correctly and even included the subtitles correctly.

Whatever is causing the error when converting the srt files, the program seems to be compensating for it in a way that doesn't hinder muxman at all. I'd just like to know more specifically what's going on, and be able to eliminate the error messages, because they halt the process until I click OK. I'm also worried that even though everything seems OK with the subtitles, that perhaps problems I haven't encountered yet, could show up eventually.

BTW I want to thank you for creating such a useful, and easy to use program. :)

MrC
15th January 2010, 17:53
@gizzin

deadzone quantization is from HCenc 0.24 beta only, and I have not yet added support to 0.24 beta. Anyway, if you want to use 0.24 you can and you can edit its command parameter by toggling on the 'Edit command parameters at runtime' advanced option.

@QuadraQ

Have you tried to analyse the srt file with SubtitlesCreator? Any errors report?

Could you setup CCExtractor to output subtitles in sup format? One conversion is better than two....

I have a suggestion, however if this option exists and I just can't find it I do apologise.

As I had 12 smaller files in queue to make a DVD the other day I found that I could not edit the avisynth script and apply to all clips in DVD queue (only for that 1 DVD). I found your option to copy but that then meant I had to copy from clip1 to clip 2 clip 2 to clip 3 etc.

An apply script to all files in queue would have been awesome. Or similar.

I don't know what's wrong...

Since switching to Windows 7 I never had luck encoding an mkv to DVD with avs2dvd.

Tried out the new version... still... no luck.

I always end up with choppy output.

Sometimes it's just at the beginning of the movie and smooth after 10 minutes.

Used HCEnc... forced QUenc...

The movies are always choppy.

Framerate of the mkv is 23.976.

@veco

honestly I cannot understand where you are getting the error: from the screenshot and the log file, everything is ok. Are you worried by the "stop" icon? Do not mind, it only means that muxing step is not required. BTW, where did you get that avi?

@flebber

good suggestion, will put in ToDo list ;)

@katzenjoghurt

directshow filter issue? Have you installed ffdshow?

I am having trouble with audio encoding. It aborts with error to review log. I am not understanding the log error.

Edit: I am trying again now with quenc as audio encoder instead of wavi and aften.
2nd Edit : Quenc was succcessful

edit: No... still choppy. :(

Indeed... no choppyness in Vista.
But when encoded under Win7 with avs2dvd the result's always choppy.
At least in the first 10minutes of the movie.
It's much smoother afterwards...

What might I have done wrong?

MrC
17th January 2010, 15:05
@flebber

Audio is already DVD compliant (PCM 48kHz). AVStoDVD does not encode it, but it tries to demux audio (using FFMpeg). For some reason FFMpeg fails to demux audio and gives an error (while video demuxing process ends successfully).

It makes no sense to me (in this situation) that QuEnc works instead Wavi+Aften do not, because none of them are used...

Since FFmpeg fails to demux, I suggest you to set AVStoDVD to re-encode audio to AC3 (use 256 kbps if you want to preserve quality).

Hum... I set H264 to ffdshow in 64bit and to AVCcore in 32bit.

It's still choppy.

By the way... should I install ffdshow 64bit AND 32bit?
Only 32bit? Only 64bit?

@katzenjoghurt

I'm running out of ideas (I do not have win7). Let's try again:

1. If your OS is xx bit you should install the ffdshow xx bit version.
2. Remove (temporarly) AVCcore.
3. Make sure you have installed Haali Media Splitter.

Do any other win7+a2d users have same issues?

This is the exact same problem I had (I use vista 32bit). The only way to fix it is to use ffmpegsource as the filter. We never got to the core of the problem.

Hey gizzin!
Thx.

I will try this when I'm at home.

I just need to install ffmpegsource or do I have to set it up somehow/somewhere?

edit: Okay... I see. It's just a dll...
Hm... what to do with it?

Go to 'Preferences'/'Encoding' and select 'FFMpegSource' as 'AVS Source Filter'. Save Preferences, if you want. Then load your mkv.

@QuadraQ

Have you tried to analyse the srt file with SubtitlesCreator? Any errors report?

Could you setup CCExtractor to output subtitles in sup format? One conversion is better than two....

The output options in CCExtractor doesn't list sup format. The available options are:

.srt
.sami
.txt (transcript, no timing)
.raw
.dvdraw
.bin (native CCExtractor format)

I don't suppose any of those options would work?

When I open the srt file in SubtitleCreator v2.2 I get an unhandles exceptions with the following details:

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

After I click Continue though everything seems to be in order.

I just wanted to try AVStoDVD but encountered several hickups that I didn't like that much.

1. When loading an Avisynth script a new script is created. AVStoDVD does not recognize the video as 16:9 so it will add it as 4:3. Switching in Title Edit to 16:9 will automatically add bars (to a 16:9 video stream). So I have to manually change the Resize options (which have been reverted later when I've added an audio stream).

2. I can only add one audio stream!? Is that true?

This audio issue is the real reason I quit the application. Else it looked good especially the (albeit flawed) ability to use Avisynth scripts to feed streams.

MrC
25th January 2010, 13:55
@QuadraQ

well, if sup is not supported by CCExtracton, then go with srt (as you have done yet).

You have said that after the error msg, SubtitlesCreator loads the srt file. Is it displayed correctly? Can you see all the subs?

@Alba Ra

what is the Display Aspect Ratio (DAR) of your avs file? Remember that AviSynth script does not have any DAR flags, so DAR is equal to clpi.Width/clip.Height.

So far only one audio track is supported. Multi audio tracks feat is in the ToDo list.

Alba Ra
25th January 2010, 16:28
I want to create a DVD from the original VC-1 stream (1920x1080). I created (as basically described in this thread by Jeremy Duncan (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=147977)) a Matroska file (with a DAR of 16/9), a Graph file and a AviSynth script. It opens alright in VirtualDub.

For AVStoDVD I tried two ways. First by resizing the HD stream inside of my original script to NTSC values (720x480), then by leaving the HD unchanged in size (i.e. 1920x1080). Both times AVStoDVD adds the video as 4:3. That can fortunately relatively easily be amended by manually editing the internal script used to open AVS files.

As for adding multiple audio tracks: when can that be expected to be implemented. What are you programming with? I see the language is VB6 but what program?

MrC
25th January 2010, 17:01
If your script ends with a 720x480 image, then input DAR is 1.5 and output DAR will be 4:3. Letterboxing is added.

If your script ends with a 1920x1080 image, then input DAR is 1.778 and output DAR will be 16:9. No letterboxing.

Why don't you feed directly AVStoDVD with your VC-1 stream?

About multiple audio tracks feat, I hope to implement it by the end of QTR1. Language is VB6. What do you mean by "program"?

Alba Ra
25th January 2010, 18:02
For some reason I didn't think of feeding the VC-1 stream. In your case this might be just the solution for this.

As for "program" - VB6 needs to be compiled, doesn't it? I mean, you may write the code using Windows' own notepad but in the end it'll have to be compiled. I wanted to know whether you work with an IDE or whether you write the code directly (say, with Notepad++, as I do) and use what compiler!? I haven't used VB yet but this would an as good as any opportunity to learn this language (as I am supposed to be able to)...

MrC
26th January 2010, 11:56
I'm using VB internal IDE. I can't imagine the difficulties in using an external editor (even as good as Notepad++) without commands autocompletion and context help...

BTW I suggest you to learn a more modern and complete language (there is the .NET family).

:)
