@leoliver

Just make this trial:
- select "No Menu" from 'Settings'/'DVD Menu'/'Select DVD Menu Style'
- add one media file (as short as possible, for time saving)
- press start

If everything works fine you should have a DVD structure (VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS) with only the movie, playable by MPC and burnable by your burner.

Let's understand if the problem is into the encoding section or into DVD Menu handling routines.

;)

Bye

I selected "no menu " as you requested and received the same error message . The bug must be in the encoding section .
I'm ready for another trial run .

@manolito

thanks for your extensive testing and for your report.

I have to say that I have tried several VOB input files, produced by MuxMan/BatchMux and TDA3 and I really could not find any error in using DSS (AVS 2.5.7) + HCenc VBR 2pass. :confused:
Maybe if you can send me a short VOB sample, I could try to replicate the error....

Many of my projects are VOBs (of unknown origin, converting PAL to NTSC) from almost day one, and have never had any problems with HCenc 2 pass.

OK guys, I found it...:o

It is not DirectShowSource, it is HC. AVStoDVD always writes the *AVSRELOAD parameter into the HC.ini file, and this freezes HC on my machine. My computer is a little old and slow, and it does not have very much RAM (Intel Celeron 1.1 GHz Coppermine, 512 MB RAM), but until now I never had any stability issues with HC (well, I never used the AVSRELOAD parameter until now).

So it would be nice to have another option added to the HC advanced settings which allows me to uncheck AVSRELOAD.

Great! I am very happy to read you found the cause. :)

Do you think that editing command parameters at runtime (and delete *AVSRELOAD line) is not enough? I'm asking you that because HC advanced settings can be accessed only thru 'Edit Title' window and that settings are temporary for current project, just like editing command parameters...

@leoliver

go on with the simple project (one small clip - no menu). To reduce unknown variables, be sure that the small clip has a "standard" name and path (i.e. c:\movies\clip.avi), the output folder has a "standard" path (i.e. c:\movies) and if you save the project, its pathname is "standard" as well (i.e. c:\movies\project.a2d).

After pressing START, do you get the project summary message window (like this (http://avstodvd.googlepages.com/SummaryWindowMsgBox.png))?

It should not have an impact to this particular issue, but, I have taken a look to the attached codecs list and it is amazing! You really have hundreds of them! Do you really need them all? For 99% of application ffdshow should be enough.

;)

Yeah, you're right, it does not make much of a difference. I would probably prefer a method which could make this setting permanent. As far as I remember Hank introduced this parameter as some kind of workaround for cases where a mismatch between the two passes would occur. By default HC does not use the AVSRELOAD parameter. So my preference would be that AVStoDVD also had this parameter turned off by default and just give users a way to turn it on permanently if they experience problems (maybe even enable the LOSSLESS mode if AVSRELOAD does not help).

I tried again , with edited file names and experienced the same failure .
I have never seen the message window you posted. It hasn't came up on my computer. I'm posting 2-files showing the active AVStoDVD windows from my last test.
I do have allot of Codecs . There installed along with audio/video software I installed. Most came from MediaCoder's Codecs pack. But allot were from other software installs.
I haven't sorted them out because I'm worried about deleting ones I might need.

I'm afraid you have a major system wide problem, seeing as many apps don't work. Codec problems can be very hard to sort once they start. It is for this reason that I am very careful not to randomly install various vid apps. This is also where an Imaging program like Acronis can be a life saver. You can always have fresh image handy to restore in case of problems.

You'll have to start "sorting them out".

You might try uninstalling any unneeded apps. You could also try this app and look for 'broken' codecs.

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Codec_Sniper

You might also try this app and check what it has to say.

http://paul.glagla.free.fr/filmerit_en.htm

You have to be careful, but maybe you'll see some common problems between the two.

Although I don't have any experience with it, for some it has been reported that the K-lite codec pack can sometimes fix/repair some issues with it's Repair function.

I'll start to work on my codec problem. I fact one codec pack I installed for WMP 11 had a recent update available, and I declined the update after reading your last post.
I'll work on just using FFDShow for my codecs .
Thanks for your help. I'll let you know when I make some progress on solving this problem.

@manolito

frankly speaking, I do not think to add default HCenc settings change possibility, because AVStoDVD is not a HC GUI, but a one-click-solution for best mpeg2 encoding apps. I mean: today you are asking me to add *AVSRELOAD setting, tomorrow someone else another parameter, and so on... I believe you can understand me...
Another point, more general: if a currently developed sw (HCenc) does not handle properly an internal error (avs reload on low memory system), why a "third part" sw (AVStoDVD) should take care of it? I would ask hank to solve the problem from the root cause. Do you agree?

@leoliver

I have uploaded a very alpha (http://avstodvd.googlepages.com/AVStoDVD_213_Alpha081217_exe_only.7z) release of AVStoDVD 2.1.3 (exe only) which contains a lot of new debug instructions.
Download it, unzip it, overwrite current exe and start again your simple project. Copy and past here the log file.

SUCCESS , your new ALPHA build fixed the problem!!!

I ran the same small test clip tonight , and the process worked. It produced a "DVD folder" that when played on my copy of the SMPlayer , had very good audio and video playback . And it seemed to work at a good rate of speed.
The FFDShow filter popped up twice during the process.
I clicked use once on the first instance and don't use once on the 2nd instance . I think the 1st instance was during the video encoding and the 2nd instance was at the start of the audio encoding . It made me a little nervous , because I was anxious that the wrong answer would mess up the process after it started.
I did download the two Codecs repair tools you mentioned in a previous reply . One showed, one broken Codecs and the other tool showed 5 broken Codecs . The tools showed different Codecs as being broken , so I still haven't decided on a course of action for that problem.
But your new ALPHA build worked well regardless .
I'm attached 2 screen shot attachments , and below is the LOG file for the successful process ....................

On my last reply I tried to post 2-images but they didn't show up . I'm trying to post the images again . I may have went over my attachment quota limit , so will delete some older image attachments.

No, it was just 250K of screenshots showing that things work for you now. Is that really necessary? You can just say "it's working".

For large attachments we prefer people to use image hosts anyway.

Point taken . I guess I got a little carried away because I was happy that the new version solved my encoding problem.
So I will try this method to display the images .................

and also ....................

When I'm using AVStoDVD , FFDShow pops up and asks me if I want to use it with AVStoDVD . The FFDShow pops ups occur at both the start of AVStoDVD video encoding and audio encoding segments. Sometimes I answer yes to FFDShow and sometimes I answer no .
So my question is , will FFDShow make AVStoDVD encode better or faster ? Or does FFDShow provide no useful support to AVStoDVD ?
Thanks.

MrC

ffdshow is a set of directshow decoder filters, it is used to decode the input file you feed into AVStoDVD. Then AVStoDVD will encode it (thru QuEnc or HCenc) to MPEG2-DVD standard.

The choice to use (or not) ffdshow is yours. You should base your decision upon visual yield and decoding capability.

BTW, if you decide that ffdshow is your choice, I suggest you to answer "always" when ffdshow pops up.

A question to all users.

Since I am trying to reduce AVStoDVD trend to become a fat suite, what do you think if I remove from the package ImgBurn and add a routine to use ImgBurn only if it is already installed in the system? Something like DVDShrink usage of Nero/DVDDecrypter.

I think that most of AVStoDVD users should have ImgBurn normally installed...

Hello - I am visinting my inlaws this holiday and they have a harddisk camcorder that stores in mpeg-2 format. I think if I understand the camcorder, every hit of play and stop created a video clip. I do not have it in front of me to confirm but I know they would like to create dvds from the files, but would like a menu that would maybe be for all of jan of 2008 not one for each clip. Is this possible with AVStoDVD? I downloaded it recently and tried it with a few video clips I had and I cannot seem to find this option. In general, i think AVStoDVD is very intuative and I think they would understand it.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Anthony

Unfortunately not, AVStoDVD cannot merge more files into one title. If you want to use AVStoDVD, you have to join all the "Jan" clip together and then feed the "big" file as a title to AVStoDVD.

AFAIK most "Anything2DVD" converters only allow one source file per title. The one exception I am aware of is Devede for Windows. Check it out...

Not true. CXD3 is a very cool app that truly merges, no illusions, and it pretty much works for everything without worry about codecs/filters.

Well, it depends on a lot of variables: quality of input sources, quality of output, menu complexity, money in your wallet (CXD is not free)... Be careful to use the word "best" without defining the whole situation.

Installer package: ImgBurn will be kept, no more barely copied but as installer itself, like AviSynth right now. During installation, if ImgBurn is detected it will not be installed (by default). Viceversa it will.

NoInstall package: ImgBurn will be removed.

At runtime, if AVStoDVD detects ImgBurn, then ISO building and DVD burning will be enabled. Otherwise they will be grayed.

What do you think?

Sounds good to me, but I like to build the ISO, and then test in Demon Tools before I burn it. Of course, I could change the option. What would happen with your default if I ran AVStoDVD and forgot to put a blank in to burn? Just a thought.

By it's type I meant commercial (basically one click) programs like WinAvi, DVD Santa, Xilisoft etc.

No offense to you and your app which I always recommend over FAVC, Avi2Dvd, The Film Machine, DVDFlick etc.

I've recently tried to use AVStoDVD for the first time. my first 3 or 4 attempts have resulted in errors during the authoring process.
I am trying to convert some AVI's to DVD using the TS folder sys. I hate to be just another guy asking for help, but it seems that most of the posts that may address my problem are technically over my head. I've used a few simple programs to convert avi's to dvd before, but it was a few years ago, so i'm kinda rusty. the error referenced the log files, so i'll post them here. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Can anyone shed some light on what i'm doing wrong? I'm running XP pro SP3 on AMD athlon 64x2 4600+ with 2gb ram.

I hope i posted the right info.

This is one of the famous MuxMan errors again (BatchMux calls MuxMan for muxing and authoring). And MuxMan is very picky when it encounters anything nonstandard.

In AVStoDVD the two typical problematic situations are:
1. Overshooting max bitrate causing buffer overflows
2. A chapter point out of the movie length range.

Try to find the "..._Muxman.log" file and have a look what Muxman complains about. Most likely it will be a buffer problem, and you should lower the QuEnc bitrate (8000 instead of 8500) to fix this. If it is a chapter point beyond the movie length (happens only in rare cases) then only MrC can fix this.

Cheers

@MysticE

OK, got it. I did not understand to what type was addressed. ;)

@marcusmd

As manolito said, there are probably some bitrate spikes rejected by MuxMan. About chapters, the routine to determine them is quite robust, so I am confident it should not create errors.

The muxman log file would be useful and the FULL (you copied&pasted only the last 3 rows...) batchmux log file would be as well.

;)

I just re-ran the conversion after reading your suggestions.
1) I can find no *muxman*.* file anywhere on my comp except in the files installed with AVStoDVD. none appear to be logs.
2) I changed the bitrate to 8000 from 8500 for QuEnc
3) I have played around with the chapters- i had set it to 20min and had also tried 99min (to keep there from being any chapters, my bad) for this 24 min avi. same results either way. I used 10 min this time.

here are the new logs & a couple of error screenshots:

@marcusmd

1. OK the problem should not be bitrate spiking
2. To keep all the log files, you have to go to 'Settings'/'Misc' and uncheck 'Delete AVStoDVD working files' (sorry for not mentioning before). Working files are located in temp folder (E:\DOCUME~1\*\LOCALS~1\Temp)
3. BatchMux log file you attached is unfortunately not very "verbose", but the author timing could be compatible with a successful authoring.
4. Check the output folder (E:\Documents and Settings\*\My Documents\NewDVD\VIDEO_TS) and the files inside. If you can see all the "standard" ifo, bup and vob files, you can try to play the DVD structure (double click on video_ts.ifo) or burn it.

Let me know

Hello MrC and thanks for a great piece of software! However I have a issue that I cannot solve.

I'm trying to convert a 23.976 fps (NTSC) x264 encoded mkv file to dvd. The output has great picture quality, but as soon as some smooth transitions or faster scenes start the video gets choppy. I suspect it has something to do with changing the FPS from 23.976 to 23.970, which your program does by default.

I have tried using FAVC (same results, but expected because it uses similar backends) and TMPGenc (also same choppiness), so finally I tried ConvertXtoDVD and it made a skip-free video. Now the problem is that I want to use your software since it produces better image quality through HC encoder. I hope that you can help me, thanks in advance!

PS: I have noticed that unlike FAVC and TMPGenc, avs2dvd only works with ffdshow (my preferred decoder is CoreAVC).

The file you found (it full pathname is E:\DOCUME~1\*\LOCALS~1\Temp\** - S01E01 - Take Your Little Gun And Get Out O_0_Title_01_MuxMan.txt) is the txt file containing the chapters flags.

MuxMan log file is called E:\DOCUME~1\*\LOCALS~1\Temp\** - S01E01 - Take Your Little Gun And Get Out O_0_MuxMan.log. Could you find it?

A suggestion: for next trials (if any ;) ) do use smaller files. It is faster.

Hi toology and thanks for using AVStoDVD.

Some clarifications:

1. AVStoDVD does not convert to 23.970 fps but to 29.970 (that is NTSC film standard)

2. If you get choppiness you can try selecting a different HCenc matrix (somebody more expert could help us in that choice) or give a try to QuEnc.

3. AVStoDVD cannot decide what directshow codec to use. It is determined by your system's filters graph manager (use graphedit to visualize it). If you want your system not to select ffdshow as x264 decoder, you can de-select x264 in ffdshow "Video decoder configuration" section.

4. What is the origin of the mkv file?

Let me know

;)

Thanks for the reply!

It seem that perhaps there was a graph problem since your program and favc wouldn't start if ffdshow was disabled.

Concerning the frame rate, I am confused because I have done many conversions using FAVC on Windows XP and they all turned out fine. Recently I switched to Vista 64 bit and FAVC refused to create a dvd. When I finally got it to work, the video was choppy. Finally I tried several applications including yours (I liked it the best and want to keep using it) and TMPGEnc, all of them made a choppy video from two different files. The file is a mkv containing x264 video stream @ 23.976 fps and AC3 sound, it was made by a firend of mine from a movie he made with a hd camera and later compressed through AutoMKV (I think). The other one was a rip I made from my Blu Ray disc of 'From Hell'.

MrC

@toology

have you tried with both HCenc and QuEnc? Have you selected different HCenc matrixes?

Another suggestion: how many codecs have you installed? Try uninstalling everything and use only ffdshow (stable releases).

BTW, I cannot guarantee that AVStoDVD works fine under a 64 bit environment: I do not have any of them, so I cannot do any test.

;)

All of the programs work fine since 64bit OS can run all 32 bit application. The only difference is that I have 2 sets of codecs, 32bit and 64bit FFdshow, also 32bit CoreAVC. Since HC encoder is 32bit it uses either CoreAVC or FFdshow.

I'll try using QuEnc, up till now I only used 2 pass HC encoding, DC precision 9 or 10, best profile, main matrix. Can anyone recommend an alternate matrix?

Oh yeah, the last time I used TMPGenc at best two pass encoding option.

Thank you again, I'll report if anything changes!

Guys, new Year has brought a new Alpha.

AVStoDVD 2.1.3 Alpha build 090102 is out (https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=197340&package_id=269494).

Change log:

- Some bugs fixed
- Added 'KeepDAR' feature (keep thumbnails Display Aspect Ratio) in DVD Menu Editor
- Added 'HL Links' feature (display HighLights links/dependencies) in DVD Menu Editor (*)
- Added 'Muxed MPEG2 File' as Output Setup option (muxing is done by ImagoMPEG-Muxer) (**)
- Changed AC3 audio encoder: from QuEnc to Aften r762
- Changed MPEG2 video demuxer: from 'ReJig 0.5f' to 'FFmpeg r14277'
- Removed ImgBurn from 'NoInstall' package. It is still present in the 'Installer' package as installer itself.
- Improved errors logging in AVStoDVD project log file
- MediaInfo updated to 0.7.8

(*) Routine is not optimized, so you can expect some slowdowns with old CPUs.
(**) That is a return to the origin. Right, MysticE?

I have just finished playing with AVStoDVD and noticed a few things,

When I add a title that is allready 352x480 and select Half-D1, the avs script yields
Video = Video.AddBorders(144,0,144,0)
Video = Video.Lanczos4Resize(720,480)
Video = Video.Lanczos4Resize(352,480)

it seems it shouldn't be resized twice, or at all in this case, also if an addborders is needed, shouldn't it be the last thing in the video processing chain to reduce any performance hit do to the increased frame size?

Then I found that the dvd size is too big and I couldnt reduce the minimum avg bitrate below 1000 and still have autobitrate enabled without changing the setting in the registry, which resulted in a GUI crash (Run-time error '383':'Text' property is read-only) when I selected settings. However autobitrate still works, it changed itself to 923 to fit 695MB.

Before anyone comments or asks why 695? The answer is "It's what I want to do." (dvd on a cdr, I have not yet found a player it wouldn't play on)
