BTW I'm planning to install a virtual machine to test W7 interactions with AVStoDVD ASAP. Until that, I cannot declare that W7 is supported.

;)

Bye

BTW, I'm running W7 with HCenc with no issues. i've ised Menu's once and worked fine.

This doesn't make sense to me either.

I just made a DVD with 1 clip and motion menu on W7 64bit (Intel Centrino Duo). I used HCEnc 2 pass (for the title).

As AVS Source I use AviSource because I installed Cedocida DV Codec and that's a VfW Codec. AviSource uses VfW, right?

Everything's fine.

This configuration is exactly the same on my other machines.

I tried different settings earlier on my P4 3.4GHz (Hyperthreading?) under XP SP2:
- Title encoding ALWAYS works with HCEnc
- Title encoding ONLY works with QuEnc if "Enable Multithreading" is disabled

- MotionMenu encoding NEVER works with QuEnc (menu.avs plays fine with MPC-HC, so I assume it's not codec-related)

I also uninstalled and reinstalled AVStoDVD...

My third machine runs XP SP3 on an old AMD Athlon 2400+. Everything fine there (except encoding time )

Probably there is a sort of incompatibility between QuEnc and your system multithread encoding. Is P4 Hyperthread troubling QuEnc? Maybe.

By default, I have left multithread encoding always ON during menu creation step. Next release will adapt to Advanced Option setting.

Well, my 1800+ still rocks...

How do you enable Multithreading for Quenc?
Via Commandline or in AviSynth?

Is there a way for me in the current release to disable it?

Hi Mrc,

I don't think it's a bug, but it is a little annoying. I just created a test DVD with 1 title and used FadeIn/Out via avisynth option. And I selected motion menu. In this case the fading also appears on the menu page. This doesn't look nice when all thumbnails come up slowly from black.

Do you feel encouraged to change this behaviour? Maybe it would be an good idea to take the part of the video beyond selected fade-in time...

BTW No issues with QuEnc under Win7 64bit & Centrino Duo.

Unfortunately it is not possible. But 2.3.2 is not so far...

Well, it's really not a bug, since menu thumbs take the corresponding title avs script as it is (just size is adjusted).

Somebody would say that remove a fading effect is good and somebody would say it is bad. I think that leaving it is better than removing it at all.

I would prefer to give the option to tweak the thumb avs script during DVD Menu editing. What do you think?

No issues with QuEnc under Win7 64bit & Centrino Duo.

Thanks for the feedback. It would be great if anybody else with a P4 HT could give us a feedback on motion menu creation as well. :)

That's OK. Would it be possible that customize dialog pops up right after starting (and after the "normal" encoder params)? So I don't have to get up at night :)

Thank you for your great app and for your continous work on it.

When will 2.3.2 be released. I want to bore my family with weddings and birthday parties :p

2.3.2 is almost ready. Just some beta testing with my set of sample clips. Probably next week it will be out.

That's what I meant. Maybe you should think about an upgrade for your 1800+. Your sample files will encode a lot quicker then and 2.3.2 comes earlier :)

LOL

Well, my usual PC, where I do most of A2D development, is a core2 duo centrino T8300. The Athlon 1800+ is used mainly as printer and files server. Anyway I'm seriously considering to upgrade it, because even latest web flash apps run slooooowly...

Hi MrC,

I just encoded a small video with 1 subtitle: I had a .srt file in my folder and A2D detected it automatically on inserting the video. Cool :). But the subtitle stream is disabled by default. Is there a setting (that I am missing) that enables this.

I know that I can edit it with PGCEdit afterwards...

MrC, love your GUI!

Just a little problem I ran into. I am loading about ~50 short avi clips and am wanting to output a basic DVD with chapters at start of each clip. No problem! But if I want to apply some extra avisynth filtering to them ALL, I must apply my script to each clip manually? There is no "Apply To All" option?

I am also interested in last poster's question, about subs ON by default!

Thank you MrC!

there's a button "Copy settings from title X" on the title Edit Screen. Look in the help file.

YEP noted that, ggtop! The thing is, you can apply settings to another title - NOT TO ALL OTHER TITLES! :(

That's why I suggested an "Apply To All" button! :)

(EDIT: If you have a large number of clips you are compiling to DVD (from same source, say), and want to apply same settings to them ALL... how do you do it?? There is no "Global" setting!?)

Mr. Monte

Using AVStoDVD 2.3.1

If I select a MKV, right click to edit title and remove audio track. Then click start to encode (using HcEnc) i get a argument error in the HcEnc info line and the process aborts.

If I do th esame exact steps, but DO NOT remove audio...works fine

Reason I attempted to remove audio is that a good majority of my BluRay MKV's have 24-bit DTS. I've had a good many AVStoDVD encodes with faulty audio in the finished product.

I Have found:

MKVExtract the DTS track from the MKV
Use EAC3to and convert and downmix to 16 bit AC3
Use Rejig and DVD Author the M2V & AC3 file

My final project works flawlessly in a DVD HW Player.

Also, in AVStoDVD 2.3.1, if I highlight th eDVD output size box at bottom right and try to edit the setting (change from 4450 to say 4000), so I can leave room for my converted AC3...the GUI will not allow me to change that setting

Thanks :thanks:

Unfortunately BatchMux (the wrapper to Muxman) does not allow to customize that option. You should address the request to Sir Didymus (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=116297).

First of all thanks for the kind appreciation.

Right now there's no "Apply to all" option, just copy from one title to another. I will add this feat request to the ToDo list. ;)

To change the output DVD size you must choose 'Options'/'Disc size'/'Custom Size' from the main window menu or toolbar.

Any idea why the audio conversion with the applications your GUI is using has issues with DTS 24-bit tracks and EAC3to (with Arcsoft DTS decoder) does not?

I have a similar question (I think) that he had, just in a different way.

Please see this thread: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=156357

Is it possible to do what I want in your program?

Please do not generalize.

AFAIK Aften (AC3 audio encoder used by default by AVStoDVD) has troubles when dealing with intermediate wave files larger than 4GB. This appens, i.e., when a source file has 6 channels and is longer than 2 hours:
768 kbps x 6 channels / 8 bit/byte x 7200 s = 4147200 kB

Thus AVStoDVD should not have troubles in re-encoding DTS 24bit streams shorter than 2 hours.

Next release will fix this "6 ch - 2 hours" issue.

Exactly the same. ;)

The "no audio" issue has been introduced (my bad) since release 2.3.0 (multi audio support). If you dowload and use release 2.2.6 you won't get any error.

Thanks a lot, MrC! It is an important feature for me, eg when tweaking an avisynth script and wanting it applied to ~50+ clips! Similarly, when I have a handful of mono clips I want to make 2-channel, I have to edit audio properties for each clip, because there is no "global" setting that is applied across all the clips (or am I mistaken?).

Thanks again, keep up the great work with AVStoDVD!

Report an conversion issue.

- Before starting the conversion, i uncheck AUDIO DVD Compliance

When the conversion of audio has give the error, i close the error, try another conversion method and project output is okay. Sounds is there.

Here log for knowing purpose ;-)

That's exactly the approach that will be used in the next release: skip Wavi+Aften (or FFmpeg+Aften, or QuEnc) and go directly with FFmpeg (only) if input audio track is 5+1 and time is more than 2 hours.

I posted in this thread, but SD wasn't around a while. Let's wait if he can implement that in BatchMux. Deank, author of MultiAVCHD, is in contact with mpucoder for the same issue (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1428829#post1428829).

AVStoDVD release 2.3.2 Alpha 100827 is available...
As usual let me know if there are any issues

Hi MrC,

I just tested the new release a bit...until it crashed :p
I could select an external player now on Win7 64bit (default path was "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe".
But on running the menu wizard the first time I got a message like "text property is read-only" an when hitting "Run Editor" there was another msg "with block not set" or something similar. A2D crashed. But now it seems to work...

When creating a motion menu there are no thumbnails. I only can see the button highlighting.
And I hoped that a could get a chance to edit the avs file before the menu will encoded but couldn't find such an option.

@ggtop

thanks for testing the new Alpha and report back your impressions.

About menu, do you get same error running 2.3.1 release? I fear that you have made too many changes to AVStoDVD reg key. I suggest you to manually delete all reg key associated to AVStoDVD (*) and then run again your project with 2.3.2 Alpha.

About thumbs avs file editing, it is still in the ToDo list ;)

;)

Bye

(*)
After some tests with W7, finally I have met the weird redirections for both *important* paths (i.e. 'Program Files') and *important* registry locations (i.e. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE). If UAC is set to standard user, then any write attempt to HKLM is redirected to HKCU/Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\[opt]Wow6432Node\AVStoDVD.
In 2.3.2 final, HKLM\Software\AVStoDVD will be replaced by HKCU\Software\AVStoDVD, which is considered *editable* by W7 too.

What do you mean with changes? I only tried to change values regarding "external player" in 2.3.1 and I set them back.
Now I have both versions installed. 2.3.1 in the standard folder and 2.3.2 in an other folder. Shouldn't I do that?
I'll test it on XP tomorrow.

You're right. Thumbnail videos are not there in 2.3.1. But I'm pretty sure it worked before...as I said earlier I'll test on XP tomorrow.

What do you mean with changes? I only tried to change values regarding "external player" in 2.3.1 and I set them back.
Now I have both versions installed. 2.3.1 in the standard folder and 2.3.2 in an other folder. Shouldn't I do that?

If you just edited one reg value and bring it back, then it's OK ;)

I have suggested you to reset the AVStoDVD reg key because the error you get could be caused by a strange/wrong reg key value.

Thanks again for your tests and feedbacks.

I have suggested you to reset the AVStoDVD reg key because the error you get could be caused by a strange/wrong reg key value.

I did so on W7 64bit and everything is fine again. I assume this has happened because the way these 2 versions access the registry has changed. I noticed this because I couldn't open prefs in 2.3.1 after changing the external player in 2.3.2 Alpha. Motion Menu Encoding works in both versions with a "clean" registry.

I have a question regarding Button Generator. You led the user create buttons with any size, but when inserting them into the layout the dimensions have to be a multiple of 4. Don't the buttons get deformed when doing so? Wouldn't it be better to check for the correct dimension also when creating?

Hi Mrc!!

2.3.2 beta is looking good for the stability. I have the 4th conversion in a batch process. Each conversion is faster than before. In less than 1 hour, i convert an m2ts 9GB into a dvd in 1 pass (avergage 77,7 fps) with DirectShowSource Spline36Resize.

Question: What is the better quality filter? For now, i prefer Spline36Resize, not listed in defaut then Lanczos. I research for the better fiter for the quality.

Thanks for your hard work!! :p

I've got an error:
Microsoft Visual C++

avs2avi.exe;

It's crashed with that movie, but project exported sucessfully

That's related to the new 'AviSynth FrameServing Check' routine: before starting to encode the title, I have added a small check to see if the title can be properly read by AviSynth (all required codecs and splitters are installed, source filter is suitable, etc.).
Avs2Avi is used for this purpose. Sometimes I have noticed that it crashes, so the check routine is performed max 3 times before giving a negative result. There's still the annoying msg that Avs2Avi has crashed.

What do you think? Is it better to put the AviSynth check as an optional step (new checkbox in 'Misc' preferences) or live with an occasional Avs2Avi error msg?

;)

In 2.3.2 the audio bitrate in "Edit Title" isn't set correctly. It is always 448 instead of the value in prefs.

Hi Mrc!!

Question: What is the better quality filter? For now, i prefer Spline36Resize, not listed in defaut then Lanczos. I research for the better fiter for the quality.

Lanczos4 is the filter option, not Lanczos. The only difference between the two is the number of taps that the filter uses. Actually setting to use Lanczos filter with 4 taps should be identical output to Lanczos4, although that may not be the case (haven't tested it). If it is different its an Avisynth anomaly. Anyways, Blackmanresize is supposedly similar to Lanczos but produces less artifacts. Spline36resize is similar but probably better than blackmanresize.

If you want quality, use:
Spline64resize <-- Corrected my error as per MrC's post below, I was thinking of Blackmanresize :)
Spline64reize should provide the optimal quality out of the provided settings, and also spline36resize and blackmanresize, for both upsizing and downsizing.

@ggtop

From 'Help'/'How to use it'/'Edit Title Window'/'Audio'/'Audio BitRate':

Default value and available options are based upon setup in Preferences - Encoding [in 2.3.2 -> Audio] and selected Audio Format.
Exception: if source audio stream has more than 2 channels and its BitRate is higher than Preferences BitRate, then the former will be used (to preserve quality).

Another exception is if MediaInfo detects 0 kbps as input audio track bitrate.

@burfadel

from 'Help'/'How to use it'/'Preferences Window'/'Encoding'/'AviSynth UpSize and DownSize Filter':

Available options are:
- "BilinearResize"
- "BicubicResize"
- "Lanczos4Resize"
- "Spline16Resize"
- "Spline64Resize"

My friends, please, do use help... maybe sometimes it is inaccurate (improvement is always possible), but I spent a lot of time in writing it... take just a little time for it.

I don't want to steal your time, but this behaviour is new. In my files audio is PCM (1536 kbps) and I want to convert to AC3. Of course it has a higher bitrate as it is uncompressed...

@ggtop

you, thief, are very useful indeed! AVStoDVD grows just because of guys like you.

Next release will have following rationale to go with highest bitrate:
IF (InputAudioTrackBitrate = 0 OR InputAudioTrackBitrate > PreferencesAudioBitrate) AND InputAudioChannels > 2 THEN OutputAudioBitRate = MaxAvailableBitRate

If your file is a 2ch PCM, it will get AC3 192 kpbs (or whatever you set in Preferences), if it is a 5+1 PCM (very rare), it will get AC3 448 kbps. What do you think?

That sounds great!

I also have some strangeness in regards to audio. If the input is a mkv file it works fine, however if the input is mp4 the encoded DVD ends up having no audio. There is a 192Kbps AC3 audio stream, but its silent!

I've tried changing the audio from Wavi+Aften to FFMpeg+Aften and Quenc, but nothing works in that regard. I did manually check with Wavi+Aften, it seems Wavi fails to read the avs input, upon which the command window has to be manually exited. It then uses ffmpeg and the audio works fine (mostly?)...

It doesn't matter whether the mp4 file has AAC audio or MP3 audio, both seem to fail!...

I'm not sure what the cause of the issue is, I'm on Windows 7 x64. I don't have any issues with media playing etc with these files. I don't know whether it was something to do with Haali (which I have since removed) having muffed a Windows setting or whether it is another related issue...

Has anyone else experience that? any suggestions for a workaround I could try?

MrC
31st August 2010, 16:35
@burfadel

Just some thought:

1. Haali is necessary, ffdshow too. Are you sure that W7 is using them? Check it with Windows 7 Preferred Filter Tweaker.
2. Using Preview, do you have sound?
3. Any chance to try on a WinXP machine?

;)
