Can you make your own root menu and also add your own background image?
No menu generation capability, right now. Maybe in the future... :)
What is this program like for converting nstc 29.97fps to pal 25fps?
Try it and give us your impressions :)
Q?
Could you please add more "verbosity" to this question?
Can this program convert a batch of avi files?
Yes
:)

Batch to me means adding 5 separate movies to 5 separate discs. You want to author a full disc, surely with a menu for navigation which AVStoDVD won't do. Theres lots of other tools on this forum alone which will do that.

I mean 5 avi tv episodes onto one dvd. A batch of avis means more than one avi onto one disc not five separate discs. Hope this helps

As I said, AVStoDVD can't do this. It will accept one movie per job, so you'd need to join them together first, which is probably useless for 5 TV episodes!

Taking the big brother (VSO) as the master reference, that issue is the most hard task to a free gui to accomplish
- people like speed, with good results, that's a fact
What strategy should a gui use for this ?
A) convert separately, and author all together in authoring stage ?
B) join the movies and subtitles like VDub append segments ?
--
A) it is only effective if you use 1 pass
5 episodes = 5 passes each
imagine more passes
5 episodes converted at 2 passes = 5 * 2 = 10 passes total
takes a long ... long time
B) it is the best way for fragmented movies, but less effective with episodes due to the limitations of : same bitrate..same samplerate...etc...
correct me if I'm wrong

Yes you hit the point: batch encoding (at least for AVStoDVD - click "Jobs List" on the toolbar) means a series of separated jobs to be done one after one.

In my first test the encoding took far longer than I thought it should with such a simple script and QuEnc. So I opened the log file and saw this:

WARNING: Cannot find 'C:\Program Files\AVStoDVD\Plugins\MultiCoreEnc.exe'. MultiThread disabled.
I looked in the plugins folder and found this:

I'm finding 1.1.3 to be a bit confusing. I was hoping it would remember some of my settings, vid bitrate and Muxed MPEG2 Streams output (it does remember the audio bitrate). It also took me a while to figure out why HCenc wasn't being used even though I picked it in settings, although the ability to quickly change to a quicker (with QUenc) encode from the main page has it's uses. And for some reason the preview does not switch to 16:9 (it used to) when WS is chosen.

I'm finding 1.1.3 to be a bit confusing.
Very sorry: my purpose was to make GUI more friendly... :(
I was hoping it would remember some of my settings, vid bitrate and Muxed MPEG2 Streams output (it does remember the audio bitrate)
As it is said in the History file, "Quality profile", "Max video bitrate" and "audio bitrate" are remembered. Not Avg video bitrate because it depends from input streams and DVD size choosen.
It also took me a while to figure out why HCenc wasn't being used even though I picked it in settings, although the ability to quickly change to a quicker (with QUenc) encode from the main page has it's uses.
Yes, by choosing "Standard Quality" or "High Quality" profile, QuEnc is automatically used (1-pass); instead by choosing "Very High Quality" profile, the proper encoder specified in the Settings Window is used (QuEnc or HCenc or CCE SP, 2-passes). I find this change more intuitive and quick to setup project. Don't you?
However in the next release I'm planning to stop CCE SP support (is anyone still using it in AVStoDVD?), to include HCenc in the installer package and to use HCenc as unique "Very High Quality" encoder. What do you think?
And for some reason the preview does not switch to 16:9 (it used to) when WS is chosen.
I will fix it in the next release.

Havent tested much, but if theres no video source file loaded
and you hit the preview in the avisynth script window, avs2dvd throws an runtime error 53 with description file not found Path:\preview000000.jpg and then exits.
Which is of course natural since theres nothing to preview, and why would anyone try to preview nothing, but i thought id mention it anyway for coding completeness :)

... Muxed MPEG2 Streams output ...
@MysticE
Since the next release, I will replace DVDAuthor with MuxMan/BatchMux. That means multiplexing m2v+ac3 step is no more necessary. Will removing "Muxed MPEG2 Stream" choice cause you any troubles or may I do it?

Cool...
I am very happy you feel BatchMux is suitable for the usage in AVStoDVD...
I planned to ask for such feature in the future, but you have been faster... :)
Please feel free to get in touch with me (in the public forum, the Italian one, or this one, or via PM) for any contribution or information I can provide on the matter...
In the meanwhile, may I ask to you to evaluate the possibility to keep BOTH authoring engines available for the users ?
I can easily provide good (objective) reasons for adopting MuxMan insted of Mplex/DvdAuth, however sometimes there are conditions where some glitches - more or less severe - in the input assets lead to fail the authoring job.
In these (rares... ) circumstances the availability af a valid authoring alternative can be useful, IMHO...
Cheers,
SD

If I may ask: what is the purpose to have one .mpg file instead of two .m2v+.ac3 files? I mean, if you play them with MPC, it will automatically append the audio; if you feed them to a DVD authoring program, you should be able to feed both video and audio.... so, why having one .mpg file only?

One question: have you installed on your system .NET Framework? The issue seems to come from MultiCoreEnc (wrapping QuEnc) which is written in VB NET.... :(
@G_M_C
Yes CCE SP support ended. As said before, I would push AVStoDVD users to switch to HCenc for very high quality encoding. Give a try to HCenc, you will be surprised by speed and quality. Or stay with AVStoDVD 1.1.3. ;)

Ok, let's move ahead, if you will. :)
1. What Avisynth release do you have installed?
2. Did you have same error using release 1.1.3 (with multicore enabled - remember to rename file \AVStoDVD\Plugins\MultiCoreEnc_.exe to \AVStoDVD\Plugins\MultiCoreEnc.exe)?
3. Release 1.2.0: open AVS Script Window, uncheck "Automatic Script", and delete ".Normalize()" from end of line 2. Start encoding.

Could be 2 old VB6 ActiveX (OCX). In the next release I will add the "Overwrite only if newer" check to the installer package for those files.

Found the problem
Since release 1.2.0 I have created the installer on Vista (before I had XP), using CreateInstallFree as usual. That software picks up some DLLs (VB6 runtime libraries) from my Windows\System32 dir, like comcat.dll which Vista version is 6.0.6000.16386 and puts them into the installer package.
When the installer goes on a XP system with Windows Defender, it overwrites current comcat.dll (XP version 5.0.2600.1). Then Windows Defender wakes up, does not want new version (6.0.6000.16386) and restore old one.
I really hate M$

First of all, I would like to say that this software is wonderful. From some random movie conversions at maximum quality (2 passes), the output looks superb. However, I came across two problems:
1. I've tried adding subtitles (using the supported formats) to the converted AVI to DVD, but when playing it back on my DVD player or computer no subtitles show. The option to enable English subtitles is available during playback though.
2. Converted movies with AC3 audio do not have any audio. I'm just curious, but why does it request an AC3 filter/codec if we're keeping the AC3 audio from the source AVI file?
Thanks again for this great software.

What AVStoDVD release and what subs format are you using? Release 1.1.3 supports txt-based subs and 1.2.0 support graphical subs.
2. Converted movies with AC3 audio do not have any audio. I'm just curious, but why does it request an AC3 filter/codec if we're keeping the AC3 audio from the source AVI file?.
When you feed AVStoDVD with a AC3 movie, the program detects if AC3 stream is DVD-compliant. If yes, you are prompted to keep that stream. If not, AVStoDVD forces audio recompression and outputs a warning to correctly configure the AC3 filter.

AVStoDVD support only muxed subs (thru dvdauthor/txt-based until 1.1.3 and MuxMan/graphical since 1.2.0).
For burnt-in subs, you could use AviSynth filter VSFilter.dll that support both txt and graphical based subs: modify AVS script adding:
TextSub("C:\subs.srt") ### txt based
or
VobSub("C:\subs.sup") ### graphical based
