@OAKside
what do you think saving the +Settings last selection in the registry?
I'd like to see the '+Settings' options stay open and visible when I re-open the app. I long for the good old days when many options were readily available right from from the main screen. :)
So far the latest build has been working fine. :thanks:

3.
MediaInfo bug:
GSpot recognises the correct dar: 16/9.
MediaInfo GUI seems to recognise it too: 16/9.
But in AVStoDVD MediaInfo couldn't recognise the correct aspect ratio, so AVStoDVD tried to make 4/3 video.
I had to manually delete all Video.AddBorders(24,0,24,0) rows, and alter the VideoAspectRatio: 0 to VideoAspectRatio: 1.
If MediaInfo is not reliable (and I think it's not), an option would be good to change the aspect ratio for ALL files in one step
manually before DVD creation.
After some searching I have found the clue. MediaInfo has 2 DAR tags: DisplayAspectRatio and DisplayAspectRatio_Original. The latter is to be used, if it exists. And for DV files, it does exist.
From next release DV aspect ratio will be correctly detected.
;)

Hi, MrC!

Thanks!
According to my other questions:
> 1. 2. The limit of 99 titles is set by BatchMux. We should address your request to Sir Didymus (the author), but he is very busy in the last months...
I searched for Batchmux, and yes, it states that 99 file can be used.
Though I think it will report an error when it has reached more than 64.
I can live with that for now, but I still have the question:
How to add files, so that they won't be separate titles on the DVD?
Example:
I want a 60 minute DVD with 2 titles. The second title starts at 30
minute. I would type that 30 minute somewhere like I can type the
chapter starting points.
But to make this DVD, i would use 10 separate files. They should be
seen as 2 titles (separeted at 30 minute), not 10 titles.
How can I make this?
> 4. Are you sure you have changed the encoding preferences before starting a new project?
Hmmmm. No. I changed the preferences while working on the project. I think the project has been saved once.
So to modify a setting while working on the project, I have to press "save as defaults" ?
It's still confusing to me, why a simple "apply" won't do the job :)
> 5. I agree with you. A general stop button could help. I will put it the ToDo list.
Thanks!
One more thing:
Which one gives better quality at high 7000-8000 bitrate:
QuEnc or HcEnc OVP or HcEnc two pass?
MrC
4th August 2009, 21:54
@ohmy
1 and 2.
Actually you cannot join small clips into one title directly in AVStoDVD. The limitation is "one clip"->"one title". Better solution is to join your AVI using VirtualDub and then feed the big clips to AVStoDVD.
4.
Pressing 'Save current preferences as defaults' does not change current project settings. It only writes preferences to Windows Registry. Reason of 'Apply' absence is that project settings are really a lot, always increasing and often each other dependant. It has become a mess to reflect a Preferences change to the current setup (until release 2.1.4 it was like that).
6.
If the source has a decent quality, when using bitrate higher than 7000 kbps, even crappy mpeg2 encoders (do not ask me which, please... ;) ) are good enough. So I suggest you to go with QuEnc CBR: it delivers good quality with a small amount of encoding time.

Well there is an eBayer (one of many) who has been selling open source discs for many years (Audacity, Cdex, GIMP etc). He has well over 10,000 transactions.

Got an odd problem which I just noticed. For some reason I'm not getting all the chapters as specified. This has happened with 2 projects.
On my last project, runtime 1:37:35 24fps (to NTSC), the chapter tab shows 19 chapter points (every 5 min). But the final DVD has only 16.
I'll try again to get a Muxman log.
Just tried another, no problems except the chapters, the tab showed 20 were to be created, but only 17 were. The muxman log showed only the 17 chapters.
MrC

@MysticE
sorry for the delay... but I am in vacation with my family (I have 2 little babies)... really no time to take a look at doom9...
Do send me the logs (avstodvd's and muxman's) and the screenshot of chapters tab. I will check them next week.

Ok, got the issue: when NTSC 23.976 fps is soft pulldown to 29.97 it retains the original encoded video frames. Even if DVD displayed frames are more (29.97/23.976 ratio). Surely MPEG2 experts can give more accurate details than me.
So right now chapter positioning in NTSC 23.976 to 29.97 projects is wrong. Bug will be fixed with next release.

MrC,
Great product! I use it to make simple Backups of our BluRay disks as we do not have a BD player in the bedroom. Anyway, sometimes it works flawlessly, other times, the audio track selection, Track 0 True HD gets me a French language track. If I try to select another track it will not even open Quenc or HCenc. It does some work for quite some time, but then fails with FFMpeg. I can't remember off the top of my head. The original input is an M2TS file. Has this been a problem before? Am I doing something wrong? You probably need a log file, and I think I deleted them all, but if you need more info I can easily recreate the problem as I own the disks.
Thanks!
MrC
1st September 2009, 12:50
Hi nozuul and thanks for the kind words.
AVStoDVD uses the capability of FFMpegSource to select different audio tracks than the main one (track 0). If you choose track 0, then it is likely that DirectShowSource will be used, instead if you choose track 1, 2, etc. than FFMpegSource is called.
There should be some fights between FFMS and your m2ts files. If you can, send me a short sample of the m2ts.
A quick try you can alway do is to launch Preview Clip before starting to encode.
;)

Thanks for the response!
Unfortunately, any track that I select other than 0 the preview fails and the program crashes.
As for sending you a clip...how would I go about cutting a snippet out to send?
MrC
1st September 2009, 22:26
Do not mind, I have found an "old" m2ts sample with 2 audio tracks and FFMpegSource does not seem to like this kind of container.
A workaround is needed. I will think about it. Thanks for the input and any suggestion (from anybody) is welcomed.
BTW you can extract the video/audio stream you wish processing your m2ts file with TsRemux and then feed AVStoDVD with the elementary streams.

Thanks MrC!
Still trying to figure out which stream it is in TsRemux, there is probably an easy way to figure it out, but I am clueless, but it looks like this solution will work. I had been using BD Rebuilder to do a movie only copy which allowed me to select the stream, then feeding that into AVS2DVD...Loooooong process...
Thanks for your help, and a great product!

Can I have that file for my collection?
Here you are the ts sample (http://avstodvd.googlepages.com/football.7z) (9 MB).
It has 3 video streams and 2 audio streams. When trying to load audio, FFMS (1.21) says "bleh, bad audio decoding".
FFAudioSource("football.ts", atrack = 1, acachefile = "FFA1.cache", acachefile2 = "FFA2.cache")
Thanks

I am having a little problem and I could use some help. I am trying to make a DVD from a MP4 file. I get a runtime error when QENC starts saying that the App requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way. The video is AVC 320x240 29.97 fps progressive. 1. No, MKV but not MP4. Also, this is the first AVC I've tried, before it was .264
2. How do I pick the encoder? that is the first thing I thought of, but I don't see how to override the default.

2. Go to 'Edit Title'/'Video', toggle off 'Auto Video Setup' and select 'Video Encoding Profile' #2 or #3

1. I have FFDShow, and the MPC standalone filters. I can play in MPC with FFDshow or the built in filters. I tried to demux the video with yamb and the video file is not playable by itself. Going to try one more thing and then skip this thing.
2. Never played in there, henc gave the same error.
Richardw322
7th September 2009, 15:18
OK, I am done with this file. I just tried demuxing with yamb to AVI and media player classic doesn't play it. Chalck it up to a badly encoded file. I am doing this for a friend and he tried Nero and it wouldn't go either.

I do have another project for later today. I have 4 avi files that I am making into a dvd. All about the same length and bitrate, but one is 29.998 fps, and the other 3 are 23.98 (or whatever the rate is). That shouldn't be a problem, right?
MrC
7th September 2009, 21:59
@Richardw322
It should not.
Coming back to the mp4 file. Last question: did you install a mp4 splitter, like Haali Media Splitter (it comes with AVStoDVD exe installer package)?

Now, another question. I turned the AVI files into an ISO with AVS2DVD. They are 3 at 24 fps, one at 30fps (or there abouts), all 350 meg, and about 900 bit rate. Why is the iso only 3.20 gig? It used Henc 2pass. (It doesn't help that my DVD burner seems to have died this weekend!! Burned the iso 3 times and it wouldn't verify. Just tried on my HTPC and it was bat out of hell. Off to the Imgburn forum)
MrC

Since the DVD bitrate could be around 8500 kbps:

Hi,
I just converted the download of "Home" from Azureus ( It is also available from YouTube at a slightly higher bitrate ) and here is the the AviSynth Script I used:
LoadPlugin("c:\Program Files\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\Msharpen.dll")
LoadPlugin("c:\Program Files\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\ColorMatrix.dll")
Import("C:\Program Files\AVStoDVD\Lib\A2DSource.avsi")
Video = A2DVideoSource("C:\Documents and Settings\oem\My Documents\Azureus Downloads\HOME.mkv", CacheFolder = "C:\DOCUME~1\oem\LOCALS~1\Temp")
Video = Video.ConvertToYV12
Video = Video.ColorMatrix(mode="Rec.709->Rec.601")
#Using DGPulldown to upsize FPS
Video = Video.Lanczos4Resize(720,576)
Video = Video.Msharpen(8,60,true,false,false)
Audio = A2DAudioSource("C:\Documents and Settings\oem\My Documents\Azureus Downloads\HOME.mkv", CacheFolder = "C:\DOCUME~1\oem\LOCALS~1\Temp")
Audio = Audio.SSRC(48000)
AudioDub(Video, Audio)
Using HC with AQ=1 and Lumigain=1 and Fox2 matrix, it gave suprisingly good results with slight jerking due to the PAL conversion, but the extra 96 lines are worth having.
I used convert ColorMatrix as I assumed it came from a BD disc.
Do I have "Video = Video.ColorMatrix(mode="Rec.709->Rec.601")"
in the right place?

There is a problem with title 1: HCenc encoded only 50 seconds and then it stopped.
You can try following list:
- Verify the AVI file is not corrupted (does it play fine from beginning to end? You can use AVStoDVD Preview Clip to check)
- Retry the project (if you have not done yet)
- Try to force DirectShowSource instead of A2DSource (FIRST go to 'Preferences'/'Encoding'/'AVS Source Filter' and select 'DirectShowSource', THEN load your project)
- Use QuEnc instead of HCenc (FIRST load your project, then go to 'Title Edit'/'Video'/'Video Encoding Profile' and select 'QuEnc CBR 1-pass)
Let me know
;)

Darn, I never checked that one that!! The second one is the one with the "oddball fps, and I jumped straight to that. I am going to try all and see what happens. BTW, I checked in MPC-HC with both internal decoder and FFDshow, and it played well. Now we have a problem I tried to play it in Preview clip and I get audio and no video. Is that right? Tried a couple of the titles, same thing. No video, only audio. Is that normal?

Think I found the answer, at least I think so. I tried changing to directshow source first, and it came to 68700. The next file was at 80000, so I aborted. Changed back to default, and tried qenc, and the first title was only 1200!! Checked in Virtual Dub, and the first video has 68700 frames!! So the key was using directshow source. At least I think so. I just started the new encode and I'll know for sure when it writes the ISO.

OK, finally had a chance to tewst out the DVD. It worked great when I changed the source from A2D to Directshow. Any idea why? The first AVI acts just like the others in MPC-HC both with and without FFDshow, and virtual dub complained about the audio but nothing else. (Virtual Dub complaigns about the audio in every file I throw at it) Any ideas? I kepyt the log from the new run if it will help.

Well, just a guess. A2DSource tries first to use AVISource to open the file, if it fails it shifts to DirectShowSource and finally to FFMpegSource. Probably the first AVI (at least the beginning of it) goes thru AVISource but after 50 seconds it quits. Maybe a not properly encoded XviD.
You can confirm by selecting AVISource as default and then try to convert again the "problematic" XviD. Just to know, where did you get it?

Heya MrC!
Will the newest release of FFDShow affect your program at all? Latest version: r3078 2009-09-17 (Sep 17, 2009)

@noozul
really do not know. I usually download and use only ffdshow "stable" releases. Latest stable release is ffdshow_beta6_rev2527_20081219.exe (Dec 2008).
BTW, if you want to make a compatibility check, your effort will be surely appreciated

It's a TV cap of Mad Men, in AVI format. Maybe when the comercials were cut out it screwed up.

I have a DVD that was released in letterbox 4:3 AR NTSC. The original image is 1.66.
When I load it into AVStoDVD, in order to resize it to full 16:9 AR with black pillars on the sides, the program crops the image on all sides.
This is the script it suggests:
Video = Video.ConvertToYV12
Video = Video.ChangeFPS(25)
Video = Video.Spline16Resize(720,576,0,66,0,-66)
To start with I don't know why it's changing it to PAL, because the file is NTSC and I want to keep it that way.
Which is the proper way to load it and set the values?

@carlmart
1. If you selected PAL as default video standard, then any project will be set to follow PAL standards (resolution and framerate)
2. A 1.66 letterboxed to 4:3 DAR DVD should be kept as it is, without trying to force it as widescreen. Anyway if you want to force it, AVStoDVD by default will crop top and bottom to reach 16:9 proportion, as you have seen. If you want to have left and right black pillars, then you have to play with AviSynth:
- Crop() top/bottom
- Resize()
- AddBorders() left/right
- Resize() again
Check it out by yourself. If you are smart enough, you can have just one resize. Good scripting!

Of course I am not selecting PAL. I go to Preferences > Audio/Video and deselected it there.
But I do have two descriptions for the file I am loading, which is an m2v demuxed from my DVD:
1) In Source/titles it's listed as 720x480 29.97.
2) In View/Edit Title settings is listed as 720 x 576 PAL. It doesn't matter is is I set as NTSC in Preferences.
Why is that?
2. A 1.66 letterboxed to 4:3 DAR DVD should be kept as it is, without trying to force it as widescreen.
Why would that be? At least I eliminate the horizontal bars, even if I keep the pillars. At least the latter are considerably smaller than if there's a 4:3 image inside my 16:9 plasma screen.
Anyway if you want to force it, AVStoDVD by default will crop top and bottom to reach 16:9 proportion, as you have seen. If you want to have left and right black pillars, then you have to play with AviSynth:

I am trying to learn a way to compute that for less than 1.77 aspect ratios. Can you tell me how can I do it in one resize or tell me where to find that out?
Thanks!
Edit: just went have a look at another French film of mine I had also resized, with excellent results. The combo script used crop() and resize().
In my present case I ended up with:
Crop(0,44,0,-44)
Lanczos4Resize(720,480)
It looks very good.

1.
Are you sure you have selected FIRST 'Preferences'/'AudioVideo'/'Video Standard' (as NTSC) and THEN you load your input title?
2.
A 1.66 letterboxed to 4:3 DAR DVD should be kept as it is because that does not involve any re-encoding, while going to 16:9 does. Remember that every time you re-encode, you loose quality. I think you can always adjust your plasma screen DAR settings without much pain. ;)
3.
I would not give you a ready-to-copy AviSynth script. I would like you to play a little bit with AviSynth (basic) functions to write a working script by yourself. Don't be lazy, my friend! Just try, I can assure that your satisfaction will be great.
:)
