just to tell you in the first place pure direct mode breaks 23/24p output is a panasonic special they do this intentionally with pride.
In what way is it broken?
I could create 23/24 custom res for 1440p but not for 2048p.
it's HDMI 1.3a so try a lower refreshrate and it can't do 3d and neither offically UHD (but the bandwidth is the same as 1.4).
scroll down to PC resolutions is may be listed there or try a custom resolution.
The port? How can you tell? I can't see it on the manufacturer's specification's list. I managed to get 1440p@60. So that's good at least.
(Though some desktop elements seem to have gotten magnified for some strange reason.) On the other end refresh rate seems to be firmly capped at 60Hz at whatever resolution.
I guess my GPU is more outdated than I thought.
DVI -> HDMI shouldn't work on passive it's just sending the same HDMI signal and a active cable would cost more then your GPU.
just get a "new" GPU.
I was thinking that they're different ports. Maybe the HDMI is restricted to 1080p. Rather than the 2560*1600 specified for DVI.
PS:
Since You seem to be familiar with Panasonic, can you tell me what "241p Smooth Film" does? Is it just interpolation?
And what's panasonic's fantasy name for black frame insertion?

smooth film is interpolation if the TV get 23p and if it get's 60 and has a 120 Hz panel it has intelligent frame creation which is the same again both are known to not work with pure direct mode.
my TV is still a firefox OS things may have changed.

it was 1.3a on release but whatever you can't do 120 hz (i have my doubt the TV can do it anyway) because you need HDMI 2.0 for 1080p120 there is no technically reason for that the specs wants it.
windows 10 doesn't like a screens which are bigger and is apply scaling automatic if it detect it you can change this in the display settings.
if you are enabling pure direct mode to get full chroma resolution and you are sending a 23/24p signal it will go and do a 3:2 pulldown (because we are on doom9 i should say it's progressive pulldown) to 60p even on a 120 HZ screen so a 6:4 pulldown (someone shoot me for saying this please). it's totally intentional and it's beyond me. panasonic doesn't know what blackframe interpolation is they may use it for frame interpolation but you can't control it individual like on a samsung or even better on sony which can do that without subsampling. there blackframe interpolation is not known to be good and more used to get some "math" behind there frame rate claim.
i mean 120 frames a sec with a 10 step blackframe interpolation is clearly 1200 HZ isn't it?

Quick question for those who kept track of this stuff.
I've used old 385.28 nvidia drivers for ages. Windows 10 forced an update and i'm pissed.
Before I downgrade to my old drivers, can anyone confirm that they are still the last that allow custom timings + 12 bits sticking on reboot ?
Has this changed ?
EDIT : well, apparently not.
Latest version didn't work. Couldn't create a custom res for my LG C8, even with CRU.
Reverted back to 385.28, works like a charm.
Go figure...

The the latest nVidia drivers claim a fix for HDR... but in gaming...?
Would this also translate to video playback?

I will check in a few to see if this latest hotfix reverts the current HDR bug. But as I've said before, HDR is fully usable with any of the recent Nvidia drivers, as long as a player UI isn't triggered for more than a second or so.

OK, to follow up on my post above: The latest Nvidia hotfix driver 445.98, released yesterday, does NOT fix the current bug with 10-bit full-screen windowed kicking back to 8-bit windowed when pulling up a player UI.

Well, dammit... I have dropped frames like crazy now, no matter what I do!
Ugh!
Edit: okay... Smooth playback now. Not seeing HDR kick on when toggling HDR metadata off and on in MadVR...
VBB

All I can tell you is, it works here. Same as every driver before it, except for that little bug that's been around for a few weeks.
WuNgUn
26th April 2020, 01:32
Still no HDR.... toggle metadata off and on does squat. Ugh!
And I can only get workable 4K playback with RGB full. Anything else and it drops frames.
VBB
26th April 2020, 01:35
That doesn't make sense. The color space has no influence on the frames. You sure you're not accidentally comparing 23Hz with 60Hz or something? And when you say HDR metadata toggle, you mean the pass-through option in madVR, or the HDR switch in Windows?
WuNgUn
26th April 2020, 01:38
Something is causing bad frame drop... It's like the video card is doing some extra processing to the signal, getting bogged down... Not just the video image, but mouse/laggy, etc...
Full screen I'm at 23Hz, windowed, at 60Hz, which plays smoothly. Is this what you mean?
Pass thru in MadVR, yes
I never touch Windows HDR setting
VBB
26th April 2020, 01:40
Did you make sure to set the Nvidia power profile from OPTIMAL to ADAPTIVE? That resets itself after every driver install, certainly if you do a clean install. Oh, and if the mouse is laggy, then you're not in 60Hz at that time.

Hmmm. I don't have too much experience with Samsung's, but it doesn't sound like the TV is at fault here. Just to make sure, you currently have the video card set to YCbCr 4:2:2 10-bit at 60Hz? If so, do you have smooth motion enabled in madVR? There would be stutter if you didn't. If your output is set to 23Hz, then the problem is elsewhere.
EDIT: I just re-read your respone above. Your desktop is at 60Hz, but madVR switches to FS 23Hz. So, there is no problem with RGB, only with YCbCr? Why not just use RGB Full 8-bit and call it a day? That might very well be the best output with the Samsung anyway.

No, I wouldn't say it's the TV either...
4:2:2 10 bit.... @60HZ, Correct, in desktop mode. 23Hz with video playback. MadVR is set to change the display mode with playback.
Smooth motion OFF

With 4:2:2 colour, I have to disable "enable windows overlay mode" or all I see is a black screen...
In RGB if I don't enable the overlay, the frame drops. With it enabled, playback is smooth.

I'm still not sure what card you have. You should not have to use overlay at all. Have you tried D3D11? What is it set to in LAV?

I might have to adjust buffers. Cooyback works well after 10 seconds of stuttering.

4:2:2 still stutters like mad
VBB
26th April 2020, 02:27
I only run 4:2:2 10-bit because of the quirkiness of the LG OLED I use (see the other thread LOL). Any other display, and I'd very likely run RGB full 8-bit. With the 960, I use default buffers in madVR. That card, old as it is, still works great for 4K upscaling and everything else, except tone mapping. I'm waiting for the 30xx series to finally upgrade. My whole rig is super old. I built it in 2008. Runs like a champ, though.
WuNgUn
26th April 2020, 02:33
Windows overlay mode is much better at smooth playback. With it off, it takes a long time for the playback to smooth, and even then, it gets the occasional drop out.
I dunno...
Tone mapping? HDR?
It has no effect on my rendering other than picture quality over here... No performance hit.
But seeing as metadata pass thru is broken :(
VBB
26th April 2020, 02:35

And full-screen windowed also does not trigger HDR on the TV? The bug in the current driver would cause what you're seeing in windowed mode, but FS should work.

Quick update: Tonight, I set madVR output to FS Exclusive after having used FS Windowed for what seems forever now. From prior experience, I expected nothing to happen differently, mostly because more recent Windows 10 installations supposedly don't allow for exclusive mode any longer (as witnessed by myself). But lo and behold, after a reboot and not touching anything else, I start a video and it goes straight into FS Exclusive (says so in the madVR OSD). You can tell it's different from FS Windowed, because for a split second there is a sort of discoloration flash on the screen, which I had seen before when FS Exclusive still worked normally. Anyway, the reason I wanted to test this to begin with was the bit-depth bug in recent Nvidia drivers. Turns out it doesn't do it in FS Exclusive, but there's a reason for it: It doesn't pull up the normal player UI, but rather the madVR search bar (if checked in madVR). Long story short, this is useful right now, because it doesn't kick the video out of 10-bit/HDR mode. Caveat: Apparently, it's tricky to get FS Exclusive mode to stick. I was able to play three episodes of a show consecutively, but when I played a test video right after, I wasn't able to trigger it anymore, until a reboot...
huhn
26th April 2020, 08:45
it doesn't stick is pretty much part of the issue that FSE stop working correctly and it's fake.
if you are really into testing more FSE you can do this at your own risk:
go to the mpc-hc64.exe right click compatibility and check disable fullscreen optimisation. this is supposed to make FSE again a real FSE like the old one and it may create some serious issues like crashing your system.

Is this specific to madVR HDR etc.? It works without issues in games with SDR output.
huhn
26th April 2020, 19:04
no but depends on the game.
games have problems with FSE to. the point of FSE is the exclusive part that means nothing else can be shown over it and that's simply not the case anymore.
VBB
26th April 2020, 19:20
I've had full-screen optimization for MPC-HC disabled for years now, so that's probably why I saw what I was seeing last night. But like I said, the brief flash before kicking in is an indicator that it somehow still works how it used to work, if it does work. Make sense?

I've never seen turning off FSO causing issues in any game with neither AMD nor Nvidia.
There btw. are no FSO for Vulkan fullscreen exclusive mode, seems graphics vendors hate this crap.
It's just D3D12 where there is only DWM direct presentation instead of FSE.

Intel 26.20.100.8141 driver released.
Well that's certainly a lot nicer than having to uninstall, delete via pnputil, & reboot first, recently, or a few years ago install a modded driver package.
It's not often that customers hating on OEM lock-in overcomes Intel's willingness to bow to them, but I'm glad they gave us some freedom again.
