Yep, wonder if we should offer to code for them...

And I though Nvidia drivers were poorly managed (change control, fix 1 thing and break 5), guess I'll just wait until they release one with the features I need, then lock the driver down.

:) Exactly. Unfortunately, it applies to everything "today", not just drivers, and not just GPUs: mobiles, TVs, cars, etc ... you name it :)

Agreed.

have we all tried the driver and are we all having the same issues, i'll try it when I get home just in case, as it has two issues, HDR & raised blacks with EVR renderer, perhaps it fixes the EVR issue?

nope DXVA2 handling is still broken they just broke d3d11 processing too just for fun i guess.

Heaven knows who they outsourced the dev work to. Am sure they will get there.....

:D It's a good first step, now they can calmly start from scratch :D

You AMD guys are making me SO glad I opted for an RTX 2080 in my new laptop. LMAO Can't wait to play with that toy next week. But uhhhh wow I thought nVidia had some issues with drivers. The last few pages of this thread, though, really have not convinced me to go back to AMD any time soon.

to be honest AMD are usually pretty good, i've used them for years and only had minor issues, this is the first time they've really broken HTPC stuff for a long time, at least they've kept 3D - for now.

I've used amd in the past so I know how good they can be. Nvidia is no saint when it comes to features and drivers, however, lately it seems amd is making some pretty big missteps. Do these latest cards have hardware encoding and decoding support for h265? Driver wise they'll hopefully eventually get the issues worked out but I'm curious if they've come up to parity on features yet. Yes 3d is nice that they kept it but isn't enough to sell me on one.

I recently switched from a 1080 to a 5700. Main reason was the 3D support without having to keep an outdated driver.

For my use case I have no disadvantage at all, as I use a JVC7900 where madvr HDR-SDR conversion is superior to output in HDR.

When I look back at the difficulties I had to get my setup to run stable with nvidia for my use case, I feel like I'm in heaven now and don't regret the change at all.

I know my 960 has hardware h265 decoding...the reason I bought it so long ago :)

even the polaris card had 10 bit HEVC support.
it no secret that amd was ahead with the media capabilities.
nvidia didn't even support multichannel PCM over HDMI for a long long time and audio bit streaming wasn't possible too the first nvidia card to support dolby and dts was the 460 where this was a standard feature on AMD but that's been a lot of years and amd is not even competing anymore...

the 960 had VP9 support and guess what is still not working 100 % with amd up to this day VP9 they totally lost there edge and are now behind far behind.

the hardware encoder is a bad joke too compared to nvidia.

most of this is totally irrelevant for me but that doesn't change the fact i mean i couldn't care less about the hardware encoder to me even nvidia encoder is not great so it doesn't matter that the AMD one is awful i wouldn't use them anyway.

h.265 encoding is very important to the things I do on an almost daily basis. The nVidia cards do a good enough job in that category to satisfy my requirement. (It's basically for archiving whole seasons of TV shows recorded off my TiVo and I appreciate speed over insane quality for that given the source material). I've no issue with AMD at all. Like I said, I used to use them almost exclusively for many years. This driver situation with both nVidia and AMD, however, pretty much sucks. Right now nVidia is doing a fairly decent job not breaking stuff completely. Speaking of nVidia....did anyone else notice that they seemed to drop the standard driver vs the dch driver in this last update? At least, I didn't see it listed anywhere. I just thought it strange that's all.

huhn
5th February 2020, 21:54
if you care about speed why would you use h265 instead of h264?

SamuriHL
5th February 2020, 22:13
Because for tv compression h265 is considerably smaller.

huhn
5th February 2020, 23:01
it's only significantly better in bit rate starving and in term of speed/quality not at all for CPU and even for hardware it's questionable. up to this day x265 isn't generally better then x264.

nvenc is not really able to beat h264 faster preset in term of quality and i wouldn't be shocked if nvenc h264 is still better then nvenc h265.

so if you use a "high" bit rate you may just not doing yourself a favour by using h265 even with hardware.

testing of this is usually a waste of time by filtering with different denoising filter for example but for pascal i have no doubt at all that nvenc h265 doesn't stand a chance against nvenc h264.

In my opinion, 265 is much better. The only stuff I see that's 264 is crap that's meant to be mass streamed illegally or downloaded illegally. Lol

I've done a LOT of my TiVo stuff in h264 in the past so I'm well aware of what it can do. However, for the content I'm dealing with, I can say assuredly at the LOW bitrates I'm using (~3kbps) h265 is far higher quality and about half the space of h264. And while there is certainly a speed difference, for the size files I'm talking about the difference between h264 and h265 using nvenc is fairly minimal. A 45 minute show (with commercials cut) @1080 takes roughly 4 to 6 minutes on my RTX 2070 to encode. We'll find out how the new laptop will do with its RTX 2080 next week for comparison but I expect it to be almost identical. Those are speeds I can most definitely live with for what I'm trying to accomplish. Now if I were trying to compress lossless UHD streams and maintain quality, that'd be an entirely different story, of course. (Note, my use of the term lossless means unmessed with off a UHD disc, not that UHD is inherently lossless).

Holy cow, that's "Shrek on a floppy" level. I wonder how VVC does with that kind of stress test, since we already know AV1 is just barely watchable.

(I know, you means 3mbps, but testing the limits is fun!)

Roflmao wow that was a fantastic typo on my part lol! Yes if course I meant 3mbps but that was hilarious! [emoji23]

Just installed the latest nVidia driver...
Now in madVR, I can't play ANY NGU chroma upscaling without a ton of dropped frames...
May NOT be driver that did this, but reverting back to my last driver to be sure...

....or, maybe because I installed the latest MadVR test build...
Ugh

SamuriHL

No I think it's this driver as that's the only thing that changed for my setup and I'm seeing a similar problem. I'll be downgrading later to test it.

Still having drop frame issues now...
Even 1080p to 4k upscaling gives me issues if I use anything other than Jinc.
If I try any chroma upsampling in NGU, it's drop frame city.

Wondering if the test MadVR settings (even though I can't access them now) were retained when I over wrote the files and installed the stable version.

Check Nvidia power profile.

No difference for me with the latest driver. As ryrynz said, always check that power is set to "adaptive" instead of the default "optimal" after install.

SamuriHL

Not sure what's up with my system. I did a clean downgrade install to the previous driver and things are back to normal for me. I'll re-upgrade again tomorrow and see if it reoccurs.

Do all Navi owners have such problems with HDR on the latest driver version as mine?

I do, as the AMD API is not sending the BT2020 flag, which is why I have to use the Win 10 HDR Toggle, which forces the BT2020 flag.

DMU
13th February 2020, 10:52
I meant without the Win 10 HDR Toggle (AMD HDR mode). Previously, the image was a bit unsaturated, now super-saturated.

So, is it currently not (really) recommended to switch to an AMD setup ??

nevcairiel
17th February 2020, 12:08
The only reason to even consider that in my book is when you are absolutely set on wanting 3D, can't live with SBS/OU modes to get that, and can't use an older NVIDIA driver either.

mclingo
17th February 2020, 16:44
the other advantage is native 23,976 support but most people now have had a lot of success setting customs res in MADVR I guess, its nice to have though.

But yeah I guess nobody in their right mind would go AMD right now if they are not using 3D+gaming as we still have no BT2020 HDR flag fix and we've still got a problem with colour space in EVR renderer too, all have workaronds however so i'm still getting plenty of use out of my RX5700.

There is still no VP9 support via general D3D11VA/DXVA2 API with Navi cards. I reported this issue to them, nothing happened.
It works with Nvidia since GTX 960 of January 2015, just go team green...
(or use Linux with Navi and live with the restrictions vs. Windows)

huhn
17th February 2020, 22:06
nev pretty much found the issue. is just special...

nevcairiel
17th February 2020, 22:32
Yeah AMD violates the DXVA API. Only a little bit, but enough for software that actually checks (like LAV) to not accept it. I'm still pondering if I should try a workaround or just let them suffer.

aufkrawall
17th February 2020, 22:51
I suppose it doesn't work with plain ffplay either, since it doesn't work with mpv. So it seems there was absolutely no testing with upstream ffmpeg by AMD. Just another indicator in what a lousy state their Windows driver team must be.

mclingo
20th February 2020, 16:12
AMD users - have any of you tried signing up to the vanguard beta program, I thought I might give it a try in the hope I could open up a channel for feedback on the HDR issues as they should also be affecting gaming, however I made it quite clear I was mainly a HTPC user but suggested that maybe some feedback from this angle might be useful to them. I'm not expecting an acceptance but I thought i'd give it a go anyway as I'm getting pretty cheesed off with AMD right now.

huhn
20th February 2020, 17:03
this looks like fun.

just look how serious amd is taking this: primary GPU series no option for NAVI.
you can be sure that you are not going to be ignored.

foxyshadis

I hope it works, mclingo; for years Intel has been the only one that actually tries to minimize video playback regressions, and even their record is quite spotty depending on who got the ticket. (Which is still something; before then, no one bothered testing video at all beyond "it plays, ship it".)

So what is the recommended driver for nvidia anyways?
