After further investigation, this might just be an issue with batch converting. I tried converting a few files individually and they appeared to come out fine. I noticed this because I set the resolution first and then when I load the vob file, it auto changes the resolution to 384, and I have to manually change it back to 400. So, probably when batch converting, it's auto changing all the files to 384 and I don't have a chance to change it back to 400. Does anybody know on batch converting if there is a way to lock in the resolution, so that StaxRip can't change it?

it tries to resize while keeping the original aspect ratio as closely as possible.
scaling to a given resolution would either mean distortion of the image (i.e. changing the ar) or cropping into the image.
which one do you want and why? black bars at two edges of the screen are normal, since it would be rather lucky to have content and screen ar match exactly.
i would recommend to not do weird things during encoding, but rather during playback. i think in mpc you can do both, scale disregarding ar and "touch screen from outside", which keeps ar but crops away part of the image to completely fill the screen.
JasonR
17th February 2013, 18:43
It's not like I'm trying to crop the black bars off of a 2.35:1 AR movie and then stretching the frame to fill my screen. These are 1.85:1 AR movies that usually fill the screen but sometimes they have really thin borders around them that I like to crop off. They are so thin that they don't distort the picture at all when cropped, but they just annoy me.

I am using "Just Mux" for my audio but the end result is always a .WAV (PCM) file though the source audio is AC3. I'm using DirectShowSource since the source is a .ts consisting of AVC/AC3. Any suggestions how to have it demux the AC3 and not do any conversions? Note: This happens infrequently but it happens, always been perplexed by it. All suggestions welcome.
Anyone know why Staxrip decodes AC3 to PCM/WAV when 'Just Mux' is selected? (happens often enough that I'd like to know how to solve this, using latest version)

I have a problem with x264 ripping:
Since a few days I get a Windows message "H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) encoder has stopped working" (APPCRASH in x264.exe v0.128.2216.9, module yadif.dll v1.7.0.0) every time I try to rip a HD x264 (mkv) to a lower resolution/bitrate one. Preset is 2Pass -> x264 Film Slower. The error occurs at around 40% of the first pass.
I replaced the StaxRip folder with a redownloaded version. I tried a newer version of the x264.exe. Both didn't help.
Any suggestion?
Thank you

I think StaxRip is a great encoder program, it's just a pity that the audio is coming out of sync often when converting DVD. It's strange that only some DVD causes this. Do you have any tips to overcome this problem? I'm converting the sound from AC3 to AAC, 192 kb/s, VBR. And the audio is equally out of sync whether I'm using eac3to, besweet, or ffmpeg.

I've ripped with DVDShrink (movie only) and anyDVD. But if you mean that DVDFab do a better job at this, I sure can try that one too.

It's just that I convert to mp4. So I guess that means that I cannot use MakeMKV to rip DVD's. None of the ripped DVD's have sync problems. It's only when converting to mp4 with StaxRip. When converting the same DVD's with Handbrake, they are in sync!

Of course you can. MakeMKV just rips the DVD into an MKV container, it does not do any encoding by itself.

Ok, then I'll try MakeMKV. Does it demux the video and sound before putting it in the mkv container?
I have managed to isolate the problem a bit with StaxRip and audio-out-of-sync. I demuxed the video with DGIndex, and the ac3 sound-file which it came out with is out of sync. In the film the sound starts at 3 sec. While in the demuxed .ac3 it starts at 1.42 sec. So it is DGIndex which has a audio problem. And StaxRip use DGIndex.

With an MKV source StaxRip uses mkvextract to demux the source. And IIRC it indexes the files using ffms2 instead of DGIndex.

But if you mean that DVDFab do a better job at this, I sure can try that one too.
I had sync issues back then with AutoGK I attributed to "leftovers" from some of the more aggressive copy protections. Fengtao wrote on his board that ripping main movie only would definitely remove any copy protection from a movie and since I'm doing this I've run into no sync issues with my encodes.

Now I've tried a solution that worked. I re-encoded the .ac3 sound in MeGUI, and added a delay (the difference in sec.). I re-encoded to .ac3 using the ffmpeg choice in MeGUI. And then I used the fixed audio in StaxRip when encoding the video. Finally I got a video with the audio (aac) in sync! I converted the sound to aac in StaxRip.
I've also tried MakeMKV to ripp the dvd, and then I used MKV extract GUI-2 to demux mpeg2 video and ac3 sound. But when I play the mpeg2 video it doesn't look nice.

But, when I play the files while they're in the mkv container it shows well. And audio and subtitle are in sync too. And also when encoding with staxrip directly from mkv container, the result is good. So I guess it's not wise to extract mpeg2 and sound from mkv container with mkv extract gui.

I'm trying to use the auto crop function and it doesn't seem to work properly. After loading the source file it always disables cropping and my aspect ratio error is over my limit of 2

Have you ever encountered this?

Why do you want to crop?
Why not just encode for 1280x720 without cropping.
Make sure that you fill in right DAR=16:9=1.78.
Is the source blu-ray?
And are you coding to divx?

I've been encoding all of my movies to XVID/AVI files with a resolution on 720x400 so that it keeps it's widescreen AR, becuase as you know 720x480 in XVID/AVI will result in a 4:3 AR. Lately, though, the 720x400 resolution has been bothering because videos are losing some detail when downsizing the vertical resolution from 480 to 400. Off-hand, does anybody know what a good horizontal resolution would be to pair with the 480 vertical resolution to keep the WS AR and not lose any detail? Let me know and thanks in advance.

You could use resolution: 848 x 480

Hi folks,
Stax76, first of all I LOVE your program.
I by chance decided to download your program and use it today for the first time. I happen to download StaxRip 1.1.8.0, so I expanded the folder and I chose to place the folder under a Different Directory C:\Program Files Z\ and Not the C:\ ... I use that Z Directory for my Standalone Portable Proggies ...
BTW, my laptop runs on Vista Home Prem., X64.
So, I started StaxRip and walked me thru the Setup ... only asked my to redo AviSynth ... which I allowed it.
I had made a Clip that I made from my main file (which I made from my DVD) ... an MKV Clip ... I wanted to see if I can compress it from 7799KB to almost half size, approx. 3900KB ... with Not Too Much of a Quality Loss (not to my eyes anyway) the conversion went thru ... BUT, I have NO Audio.
BTW, I tried the complete file 3.35GB and I got no Errors but I did Not want to Encode it yet until I can decide on Quality setting 21, 22, or 23 ... u know.
So then, I happen to see someone's comment on VideoHelp ... he said he had to revert to StaxRip 1.1.6 ... so, I went to that version and viola now my new Recode HAS Audio.
Q1: May be you can check and see why 1.1.8.0 has No Audio but 1.1.6 gives Audio!?!?
Q2: Or is it my setup's problem?
Thanks!

Don't resize at all. If anything, clip the letterboxing in videos if necessary, and encode as is, and simply specify the AR in metadata. Best way to keep all maximum original detail and playback at the correct AR.
Don't resize the video, specify AR Ratio instead in the metadata of the container format.

hello everybody!
does a higher percentage in compressibility´s "aimed quality" make any difference to quality?
I did a test with a 2 hour vid in bitrate mode, one with it at 50% (balanced) and the other at
95% (extremely good quality, huge file size). the end files are the same size, the encoding
took almost the same time, the 95% one just 12 minutes less...... I thought this one would
take a lot more.... the picture quality looks the same, I don´t know, I can´t tell there is
any difference.
thanks!

Good question! Maybe in regards to how a specific encoder using the final stats to work things out, but visually I have never noticed any great improvements.

I never used that option, because it's under the tab "Compressability Check" and that can be run manually if you choose a two or three pass encoding mode. It seems to serve as a guideline to modify your encoding settings, as (after you run a Comp. Check) you get quality and compressability results displayed within the "Target" area of the programmes ui (and at the bottom in the "Quality" area). As I see it, it doesn't affect the actual encoding in any way.
But I have some other questions myself:
- Will there be a x64 version of StaxRip (or one supporting the 64bit version of x264) any time soon? Afaik the limiting factor currently is the 32bit implementation of AviSynth.
- Will there be an update function for used programmes like x264, mkvtoolnix or ffmpeg? I know that compatibility issues may arise, though.
-> Alternatively it would be nice to be able to configure programme locations outside the StaxRip folder, so that one doesn't need to install them and then copy the files manually to StaxRips applications folder.
- Would it be possible to make audio streams selectable for TS input files? Currently I have to remux the created MKV with the audio from the source, if that has more than two audio streams - or feed StaxRip sources with 2 or less audio streams. (Setting the audio streams language within StaxRip would also be nice. ^^)
- Sometimes I get async files when encoding MKVs, though audio is set do "Just Mux". When remuxing the created video stream with the audio from the original MKV everything is in sync. Any ideas on that?

There are no plans. Yes, AviSynth is the biggest problem, I've not yet compared the 32-Bit performance to workarounds yet.
Will there be an update function for used programmes like x264, mkvtoolnix or ffmpeg? I know that compatibility issues may arise, though.
Definitely no, you have to replace the applications manually and go to the Applications dialog, select the updated application and press F12 to edit the version.
Alternatively it would be nice to be able to configure programme locations outside the StaxRip folder, so that one doesn't need to install them and then copy the files manually to StaxRips applications folder.
I don't understand what you mean exactly. There is a somehow hidden feature in the Applications dialog to point to alternative locations, press F1 in the Applications dialog. Showing a file browser to edit the location was needed to locate the exe and dll for DGDecNV which isn't included, it can be used for other applications too though you have to be careful because certain applications must be in certain locations like nero in the besweet folder, AviSynth in the system folder via setup etc., the feature is hidden for a reason. The next version will verify that it's in the right location.
Would it be possible to make audio streams selectable for TS input files? Currently I have to remux the created MKV with the audio from the source, if that has more than two audio streams - or feed StaxRip sources with 2 or less audio streams. (Setting the audio streams language within StaxRip would also be nice. ^^)
Possibly if you provide a sample source and a problem description.
Sometimes I get async files when encoding MKVs, though audio is set do "Just Mux". When remuxing the created video stream with the audio from the original MKV everything is in sync. Any ideas on that?
I would need a sample source and a StaxRip log file, possibly the split feature of mkvmerge and mmg can be used to create a short source sample but after splitting you have to verify if the problem still exist with the sample.
@icezellion
Please mail the log file.
@gonwk
Not all download locations can be trusted to have the latest and unmodified application. StaxRip is distributed without a setup, it's never smart to put a application without a setup to 'C:\Program Files...' since such application ofter require write access to their startup location and since Vista it's a read only location, some applications included with StaxRip require write access to their startup location.
@brusno
You would just rip with MakeMKV and open the MKV file with StaxRip, the next version has a changed dialog making it clearer that a single source file is the best source type, especially when it's MKV with all the powerful tools behind MKV:
http://thumbnails105.imagebam.com/26305/a9d3da263048886.jpg (http://www.imagebam.com/image/a9d3da263048886)
StaxRip by default demuxes everything so usually manual demuxing is not required, previously it demuxed some video like AVI from MKV but I've disabled this in the next version and I changed AVI to be handled by FFVideoSource to avoid problems with missing and non working VFW decompressors.

so if someone wants to know what is new in a new version of staxrip in order to decide if the upgrade is worth it, he is forced to install it and then check the menu to see the changelog. why not posting a changelog txt along with the zip file of the new version of the program as all developers do?

Hi,
I get the following message:
Unsupported Colorspace
x264 requires YV12 input. Right.click the filters, select, "Add" and coose "Misc/Convert to YV12"
I did that, but that menu entry is not present, all I can select there is "assume 25fps" or "assume 23.96 fps". So how do I get that filter in Staxrip?
_______________________________________________
That error appears when there is a syntax error in your filter chain. Deselect all of the filters (except source filters of course), and the error should disappear. Then reselect each filter until the error occurs again, and you will know at which point the error occurs. This is of course, if you can't find the error by looking at the filters manually.
Since it is a filter chain error, selecting converttoyv12() will not resolve the issue.

I've not yet compared the 32-Bit performance to workarounds yet.Me neither, but I assume that there are some and they might be relevant on a 3,4GHz 8-core machine. ^^
I could test it using Hybrid, which supports 64 bit.
There is a somehow hidden feature in the Applications dialog to point to alternative locations, press F1 in the Applications dialog. That's exactly what I meant. But it would be nicer to have that either documented or even a button. Or just having to click on to the path to open the dialogue (same for the version). I think that would be easy to do and it would be more convenient/intuitive.
I don't know when I'll find the time, but I will provide the needed samples/sources for the before mentioned problems. Danke schon mal für die schnelle Antwort. (:
regarding importing the settings, ..., just copying it over to the new program´s folder, doesn´t work well if you have set up a new startup template.
Copying over worked just fine for me. Where are your settings stored? Mine are in the users folder of windows (8).
Edit: One additional question just arose with 1.9.0.0: Is it no longer possible to use an already installed YUV-codec? I have K-Lite installed with a YUV-codec. With 1.8.0.0 StaxRip used to ask which to use (ffshow or another, I do not remember, I guess huffyuv). And why not use Helix YUV 1.3 (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=56972)? (Though according to the changelog the only difference is the supported resolution up to 8192².)

this piece of software, at least the versions I´ve tried so far, 1.1.8.0 and 1.1.9.0, is installed (no installation needed really, it´s extract only) on a xp machine. I first did a search in c: for any staxrip settings/config file but there was no trace of any leftover files. the settings file is in the root folder of the program. I can see it by simply opening manually staxrip´s folder or through its menu link. I tested it a couple of times: if I copy over the settings file before my templates, my startup template doesn´t open at startup. it does though if I first copy over the templates and then the settings file.
ok, so I guess this is the right way to update the program keeping your old settings, by just copying over the settings file of a previous version of staxrip.

thank you. I already saw it after having had to install it.
it would be nice if the changelog of newer versions could
be posted along with the zip file once released. anyway,
thanks again to the developer of staxrip for this, although
not perfect, very useful and nice piece of software, indeed.
