what do u guys think about dialog normalization reduction? in which cases is it good, i mean, in 2-ch to 2-ch transcoding, or in 5/6 ch to 2-ch transcoding?
Most of the time this is recommended. At least with descent AC3 sources. Whatever, stereo or multichannel.
also, what does control rear channel filtering do?
From the Azid doc :
This option controls rear-channel filtering in 2/0 output mode. The
filter is a 2nd order Butterworth filter with at -3 dB point at 7
kHz. There are two major applications for this feature:
o To provide proper Pro Logic downmix of the rear channels
o Phasing-problems in the downmix (washy sound) caused by the rear
channel downmix into the L R channels.
Usually the rear channels are phased 90 deg in respect of the front
channels prior or inside the ac3 encoder. This is done to avoid
phasing problems when downmixing the program contents to two
channels. Some sources do not provide this shifting, and thus this
feature is added.
The filter provides an increasing phase shift according to
frequency. It is 90 deg at 7kHz.
NOTE: This option is only effective when 2/0 output mode is selected
(-d 2/0).

About the bug concerning multiple input files in the list. Check out this build (http://corecodec.org/frs/?group_id=45&release_id=299#r299) and let me know if it's ok for you. It works fine for me. So, I cross the fingers...:p
Thanks all.

I would like to release a new beta this week. So, please let me know if there are some troubles or if all seems to be ok...

Well, there are a few things:
1. Sometimes this appears http://img266.imageshack.us/my.php?image=snap00019vd.png
and sometimes this
http://img266.imageshack.us/my.php?image=snap00027fe.png
I do not know what you have to know, too.
2. When I abord encoding I have to press the abord butten a second time to get the green arrow. This is annoying.
3. Sometime I add an avi file by mistake. In this case the file size is set to 0 byte and it is destroyed. Very more annoying then the last one.
I hope there are not so many mistakes in this text.

Yeah...fixed.

Yes...very annoying knowing that there is a warning normally for AVI file : "Sorry, some input files are not supported yet. Use BeLight 0.21 if you want to transcode them." So, I guess you break the rules ?

which is the proper way to encode ac3 to aac in belight, i mean, with proper volume, does pregain suffice, and does dialog normalization reduction helps in getting good volume?
Kurtnoise

If your source is clean (i.e from DVDs), choose some Presets. It's enough.
@Eragon4ever : for AVI issue, I know why.

I'm having problems using Nero CLI and a 5.1 source. No matter what settings I pick, the resulting bitrate is 600k~, which nearly doubles the size of the source file (which was 384K). I've tried the other Nero method, the one that uses the .dll files, and that works fine.
I'm using the newest daily BeLight, newest BSN, and newest Nero CLI. I'd post a log, but there are no errors of any kind :(

Oh, that sucks. I didn't see any warning about the profiles not being accurate for 5.1 :( Picking .15 finally got the target bitrate I was looking for.

There are no warning because this is a daily build. Some improvements/changes might be available soon That's all.
and btw, if you looking for a target bitrate don't use quality level but bitrate mode instead.
edit: make presets for 5.1 is far to be easy, especially with quality levels. So stop to complain...

I tried making a 5.1 AC3 -> 5.1 AAC (Nero Digital) conversion, but seems like there is problem with either belight, besweet or nero. The straight conversion just ends up with corrupted .mp4 file, and trying to do 5.1 AC3 -> 5.1 WAV conversion and then compressing, ends up with a .wav file 2:04:16 long, when the AC3 is 2:51:21 long. When searching for track gain, the scan seemed to do the whole file, so I don't understand what's the problem with the output. The WAV file is well over 4 GB, so i don't think that's the problem either.
[edit] Made some calculations and maby the wav file is made correctly but the programs i tried to play it with can't go over the 4GB limit, as it seems the limit comes just on 2:04:16... Should -ignorelength on nero encoder commandline fix this? I guess I'll just need to try it out.
Shouldn't Belight signal the -ignorelength to the nero encoder automatically? It's annoying having to first decode to huge wav and then encode it yourself.

Made some calculations and maby the wav file is made correctly but the programs i tried to play it with can't go over the 4GB limit, as it seems the limit comes just on 2:04:16... Should -ignorelength on nero encoder commandline fix this?
Yes, you need -ignorelength to encode > 4 GB wav.
For an ac3 2:51:21 long 6 chan 48 KHz, the wav must be 5.5 GB.

Yes, the WAV-file is 5.51GB. Ok. so now I should get it encoded. Only wonder is why didn't straight encoding from AC3 to AAC work. Is it like I guessed and BeLight doesn't tell nero encoder to -ignorelength?

It uses this switch but you need the last bsn.dll with it...Check the link above.

hello
is the development for BeLight stopped ??

I wouldn't have thought so... Kurtnoise has been pretty busy with YAMB 2.0 ;)
Besides, I'd love to see FLAC encoding incorporated into BeLight :D

Not stopped actually...but I'm quite busy with other things at the moment (not Yamb or anything else but with my real life).
The more important : I'm waiting the next MediaInfo release which will fix some bugs for VOBs files (I need this to know the right duration to include VOB as input) and the next Tranzcode version for dts support.

About the bug concerning multiple input files in the list. Check out this build (http://corecodec.org/frs/?group_id=45&release_id=299#r299) and let me know if it's ok for you. It works fine for me.
Well, with this build, which seems to be the last one available, the bug is still there: multiple file processing is impossibe.
I know and appreciate, that you are preparing for a YAMB 2.0 release and are messing with real life trouble, but is there a way for a quick'n dirty fix? It is daring to speak up for the entire community, but I found this to be the most annoying bug to date. Reason: Multiple language DVD conversion.
And the last daily build was ment to fix this, but is 3 months old.
I don't complain, instead I ask, for I know it's your hobby in a real life world. :thanks:

I seem to be suffering from a plague of Error 84's moaning about being unable to configure bsn - even on encodes which I thought didn't involve bsn.
I'm using Belight 0.22b9 20060626 to transcode ac3 to aac. ATM I can't get anywhere using Nero - either the bundle or command line encoder. I have bsn_20060523, WA_aac-2.3, NeroDigitalAudio1002, enc_aacplus from WinAmp525-0868b-pro & the Nero dlls from 7.0.5.x
All my machines chuck out Error 84 when trying to transcode ac3 to aac using the Nero options.
I managed to get one machine to work with the CT WinAmp encoder. The others threw up more Error 84s.
Is this Error particularly informative? Searching on the forums seems to show lots of unrelated cases where it crops up. Can one get any more detailed logging out of Belight?
I compared my working install against the non working & eventually figured out the non working one was missing the nscrt.dll from WinAmp. Adding this fixed the problem.
This leads me to ask a few questions:
Wasn't Belight able to realise which dlls were required but absent & log this info?
Any idea how nscrt.dll got into one of my Belight installs, as I know I didn't manually copy it there? If Belight is smart enough to find & copy it itself, why didn't this work on the other machine nor lead to a suitable error in the log?
Can logging of problems please be made more detailed? :)
What does Error 84 actually mean? How is bsn involved in all these encode issues when it doesn't appear to be involved by examination of the command lines in use.
I know installation will never be entirely trivially as Belight uses many third party components, but could there at least be a readme which states which files need to be copied where & in the case of dlls, what versions are required?
It took me ages to realise I needed a newer version of bsn to utilise the nero commandline encoder. It took me longer to figure out I needed nscrt.dll for the WinAmp encoder (I've not read of this anywhere even yet). I'd guess my other Nero encoder problems are of a similar nature.
I might not spend 20 hours a day working in this area, nor be a genius, but I'm pretty bright & don't give up that quickly, yet I still find setting up Belight to be quite problematic in many respects.

1/ Uninstall Nero 7.xxxx.
2/ Grab & unzip in a fresh folder BeLight_20060626 version.
3/ Grab BeSweet 1.5b31 from here (http://dspguru.doom9.net).
4/ Replace bsn in the BeSweet package by the new one (bsn_20060523).
5/ Copy NeroAACEnc.exe from NeroDigitalAudio1002 in the same BeSweet folder.
Should be ok now for transcoding AC3 to AAC with the Nero CLI switches...
edit : in this case, Error 84 means that BeSweet is not able to set bsn properly.

1/ Uninstall Nero 7.xxxx.
If necessary I can do this for testing purposes on one particular machine, but it's not workable if part of a long term solution. For now I'll try without this step.

I have all of those already, but will try a clean install following your directions in a new directory - glad you don't rely on registry settings, as this makes it easy to test parallel installs.

And it is :) ...so back to a file by file comparison to figure this out...
Ah, interesting. In my original install I'd put NeroAACEnc.exe at C:\WINDOWS\system32\neroAacEnc.exe so it was in my path, & used Options->...->ExeFilesBrowser to inform Belight of the location.
It seems this it what's leading to the error & the failure. If I copy the exe into the Belight install directory & tell it to use that one, encoding works. Thanks for helping me find the problem. Is this a bug in Belight then?
Oh, re encoders, do you have an opinion on the comparative quality of the Nero CLI encoder compared to the WinAmp one? I'm mostly interested in 5.1 around 192 Kbps for use in video encodes.

If you don't use the burning app, Nero 7.xxx is not needed here.

my fault & bsn restriction...not really a bug.

Both are good for this target but *my* vote goes to the Nero CLI.

Indeed. I was just concerned you were suggesting there was an incompatibility, which would have been a problem for me, as I rely on Nero for burning & for Recode.

I have put BeLight-0.22beta9_20060926.
At coding wav_pcm in ac3 by means of aften.exe, BeLight writes " ' (the name of a file) ' is not valid intager value ".
At switching on ac3enc there is a same inscription.
Why?

Some news in the last daily build :
Aften & Flake support added (bsn_20060930 needed).
CT AAC encoder updated (WA_aac.dll v 2.4 needed).
Some new Priority Threads.
For the bug with multiple input files, don't use the Drag&Drop but Menu -- Files --> Add Files instead. I must have to rewrite this function I think...:o

the new bsn.dll and WA_aac.dll versions are available also on CC.org (Dimzon BeSweet plugins dir).
