There must be some difference you are overlooking. Start by comparing the output of both programs given the very same test file and compare them in MediaInfo.

Well, you're not giving a lot of info. No sample, no encoding logs, no MediaInfo, no nothing. There has to be a difference. If it's not the encoding side it must be decoding/filtering.

Well, you're not giving a lot of info.
It's an extremely big task to supply you with all infos that cost me a couple of hours, and you don't need them really if you do a test on your side which is a much easier task to do. There are lots of samples if not all where Staxrip x264 quality suffers on the same x264 preset.

This is a particular odd one since Staxrip produces a much bigger video output on a similar input bitrate, input bitrate has to be much lower for the same video file size ouput.

so from a quick look i can notice this myself and it does suggest the the same preset was used however the bitrate isn't the same :(

Output File size is the same, I told this video is an odd one. If I would use the same input bitrate as in Handbrake, the Staxrip x264 output is much bigger as a result.

The sample seems to really mess up x264's 1pass ABR algo. When vbv is turned on it hits the target bitrate better but in the end I think I would go 2pass or CRF. (Other differences x264 version and keyint)

I love StaxRip over the all time of use since years.
But after last night... ;-)
And now seriously: I've a strange case with "internal" crop engine in last test build.
After encoding I've a huge green transparent bar on top of video with any crop values
(strongly divided by 4, 8 or 16 px). With other encoding software like MediaCoder Pro
or Adobe ME with nvenc_export plugin by nvenc4everyone this issue is not present.
My specs & encoding parameters:
Asus Strix GTX960 DC2OC 4GB
StaxRip 1.3.3.9 Test Build
Source -> AvySynth+ & DGSource (with DGencNV, march build, donate version)
Filters/Misc -> aWarpSharp2 (thresh=96, blur=3, type=1, depth=32, chroma=4)
Preset -> Nvidia H.265 (with some custom options like:
--vbr2 2560 --codec h265 --bframes 2 --max-bitrate 12288 --aq --avcuvid --crop 0,24,0,24 --cu-min 8 --cu-max 64
--fullrange --colormatrix bt709 --colorprim bt709 --mv-precision Q-pel --transfer bt709 --sar 12:11)
Decoder -> NVEncC (NVIDIA CUVID)

I could reproduce it and think it's NVEncC cropping, left crop gives an error message and top crop gives green bars. I had reported the left crop issue to the NVEncC author some weeks ago and because it's probably a nv api problem he could only make a error message. Somebody has to report it to NVIDIA, I don't know if the author has contact with NVIDIA.
You don't need to add --avcuvid to the custom command line because it's the default.
There is a big issue with your settings! Choosing CUVID as decoder in the NVEncC options dialog will bypass AviSynth/VapourSynth entirely! Take a look at your NVEncC command line, there is no avs/vpy file! You have to select AviSynth/VapourSynth as decoder if you want to use AviSynth/VapourSynth, you can still decode with CUVID using either DGSource or DSS/DSS2/LAV Filters CUVID.

I noticed that the program causes madvr in full screen exclusive mode to fail. This happens right after it finishes its encodes. The program window activates and FSE is disrupted. Is there a way for staxrip not to do this?
Before StaxRip activates the window it tries to detect which app is in the foreground and in case it's a known player in don't activate, right now only mpc, vlc and mediamonkey are known, I can make this a editable setting.

What a fabulous work regarding Intel's HW encoders!
You have spent a lot of time on HW encoding GUIs and this time rigaya should advertise and maybe "steal" your GUIs for all his HW encoders (Intel, Nvidia, AMD)
I think you literally have put every switch of the CLI apps in your GUIs!
Really great work and great progress regarding HW encoders in general, inside StaxRip.

I had asked rigaya about a year ago (!) and he had told me that scenechange was visible using some specific encoding modes in HW encoding.
He had disabled it by default in both SW & HW encoding.
Also keep in mind that scenchange is incompatible with b-pyramid.
If you enable b-pyramid, then scenechange is off by default.
Run --check-features to see the table of encoding modes supported on your platform.

Hi all,
just switched from MEGui to Staxrip and as for encoding x265 this is definitely the tool I like more.
I have a weird issue, hoping someone will be able to share some light: encoding speed (can post settings in case of need).
I tend to encode BR tv series to 720 hevc files, bitrate 3000. Ok, my choice, dont want to start any issue here :)
The real question is: same encoder version, same (checked 3 times!) encoding settings, bit by bit I would say ans encoding speed is very different!
Tried different files and chunks: no matter what MEGui (ABR 3000+ command line switches) is faster than Staxrip (mode bitrate set as 3000).
About 17/18 fps Vs 11/12 fps. This is really bizarre, and quite annoying to be honest.
One thins I have noticed (medium preset for both) is that on Staxrip in basic options window I set 3000 as bitrate but have to select one QUALITY value as well (this is not needed in MEgui).
Question now would be: am I doing anything wrong or why encoding speed is so different?
I add extra switches in use for my profile: --bitrate 3000 --profile main --rd 4 --tu-intra-depth 3 --rdoq-level 1 --early-skip --fast-intra --b-intra --tskip --tskip-fast --limit-modes --qg-size 16 --nr-intra 400 --nr-inter 400 --vbv-bufsize 10000 --vbv-maxrate 10000 --me star --merange 38 --max-merge 3 --weightb --bframes 6 --rc-lookahead 40 --ref 6 --no-deblock --no-sao

im trying one of the new functions in 1.3.40 for the user scripts

When I convert BT709 videos from SDR to HDR using Staxrip's conversion script they look identical on my HDR TV when I play them via USB.
I also get incorrect brightness/colors when I play them on my PC Monitor via MadVR no matter which HDR brightness setting I select in MadVR settings menu. I see from your screenshots that the HDR video looks slightly darker than the original. If you play with HDR brightness (nits) settings in MadVR you can make it brighter or much darker, but you can't make it look identical.
That's the reason why there is a fine print/comment in the HDR conversion script that says "You must have a HDR compliant TV to play the output file". Currently perfect HDR playback on regular monitors is not possible via software players.

The audio text box has a 'Execute' menu item to execute a audio profile, this works with or without a video source being opened, for multiple files you can run multiple StaxRip instances.
If you have a video source open you can add audio only processing to the job list by selecting 'Just Mux' as video encoder and 'No Muxing' as container.

Im on an I7 Skylake 6700k OC'D to 4.5ghz and on the first pass it doesnt go faster than 19.40 fps and then on the second pass it drops to 17fps.
Is there something im doing wrong? Is there a way to have better fps? Thanks

Nope, you done nothing wrong. There is simply no way to get better fps other than disabling many features (laymen term = use ultrafast preset which practically disable many encoding options)
From the benchmark here http://x265.ru/en/x265-hd-benchmark/ , what make you think 6700k 4.5ghz is 'godly' in first place? After all Core™ i7-5960X with 20Mb cache, 8 cores 16 threads that OC-ed to 4.5ghz only get paltry 32.42fps. ~.~

You using 1500 if use 2000 i can download :) 1500 good but bad for dark scene :(
