Hmm, but how is it possible then to let Quicktime Alternative play normal movs and let AVC movs be played by ffdshow (since they are too slow with Quicktime)? - Would be glad if this is somehow possible in MPC without the renaming trick...You have to enable MPC to play mov files with directshow. Press O when MPC is opened, go to format and change the renderer from QuickTime to DirectShow. Voila.

Edit: you might want to uncheck MPC's internal mp4 splitter if you're going to use Haali's. Otherwise, MPC's kicks in for mov files as well.

Well I think I didn't get it because if I do that I don't have sound :-(

With some mov I simply don't have sound and on some other I have a message from MPC (see attached image). With the renderer QuickTime I have sound of course.

Should I set something else in ffdshow or MPC ?

I have the latest version of MPC, quicktimealternative 167 and ffdshow-20051201.

thanks

Hhmmm... I'll give it a try !

The problem with QT Alternative is that it uses Cyberlink's QT Source filter which is far from perfect (currently v1.0.0.1016, C:\Program Files\QuickTime Alternative\QuickTime.ax). It's the cause of the sometimes missing sound in standard mov files ... In this case ffdshow and Halii's splitter is not used.

Ditch that bullshit (QT Alternative), it's not good; it's like using the official QuickTime Player, but without installing QuickTime. It's just as slow. Combine ffdshow with Nero Digital's NDParser.ax and you have mov files playing perfectly.

If QT Alternative is bullshit, can you tell what formats this Nero Digital Splitter is capable of splitting? And where can I download it? (I don't want to download some 30MB Nero kinda file just for one splitter)

(I don't want to download some 30MB Nero kinda file just for one splitter)It can splitt mp4/mov and I believe 3gp. Its mov splitter works better than MPC's internal mov splitter, but the rest is better with MPC since Gabest has coded his mp4 splitter to kick ass.

Nero ought to release their stuff as codec packages instead of having to install the entire 30 mb package. So in protest, I've uploaded the NDParser for you guys to check it out :D

Hhmmm... I'll give it a try !

I have tried it (v3.2.0.20): it's much worse than the QuickTime.ax .
NDParser is perfectly plays the hdmovs, but with standard movs the result is critical: about half of the files didn't play (there were no picture, or didn't play at all).

Or Have I something missed in ffdshow ? Which codec must I enable ?

for playing every file in directshow you need two things:
1) a file parser
2) a decoder

if you have a parser (like the one from nero), but not the decoder for decoding the audio/video stream, the file obviously will not play

therefore you need to find out what the stream was encoded with (eg in quicktime) and than install a decoder filter for that format

obviously its a problem when the .mov uses proprieatary audio/video formats not being supported in any dshow decoder but only in quicktime, cause than you are back to use quicktime (or qt alternative, which simply wraps the qt decoders)

decoding open formats, like avc and aac, which are used since qt7 in apple trailers aso, should be no problem tough with ffdshow

Reino
14th January 2006, 14:44
I just tested the NDParser. Uhm...it seems to have no problems with the QT7 trailers (AVC1) (with still the .mov extension), also Sorenson (SVQ1) (I guess that's QT4 or 5 or similar) play's fine, but I guess for QT6 you really need the QuickTime Video Decoder because it fails with the NDParser.

And I don't know how, but somehow the Nero Digital Parser disables the AAC Parser Filter, to play AAC Audio files. But the NDParser can't handle it because you get a big error. This is some really weird stuff.

And besides, is it free?

Elias
14th January 2006, 15:13
Why don't you guys just demux the avc/aac streams from the mov container, with YAMB and then put them into mp4 so you won't have to go through all this hassle? It's a lossless process and it won't take you long.

No thank you. It's all about finding the perfect MP4 Splitter, and at the moment that would be the one from Elecard imo.mov and mp4 are not the same container. As for the perfect mp4 splitter, imho Gabest has the best one. The fact that MPC doesn't parse mov very well doesn't degrade the quality of Gabest's mp4 splitter.

If you want force MediaPlayer Classic to play .MOV files using a "direct-show" filter, you should really be visiting and changing these MPC options...

because of that feature for me it is like having an extra alternative to switch back to QT [Alternative] (if really needed) for decoding files in question...

nevertheless the NDParser is really, really good!!

but concerning AVC streams I like to have CoreAVC decode these streams but at the moment CoreAVC isn't aware of AR signaling if latest Haali's Media Splitter isn't used...

as bond stated...

still the case with 0.0.0.4

anamorphic resize works with haali's mp4 parser, but not with nero's (and all the other mp4 parsers acting the same way as nero, like gabest, elecard...)

therefore i think haali does something different than all the others making coreavc not resize and therefore the support in coreavc is, unfortunately, still incomplete

Afaik all DirectShow QT parsers suck at supporting old mov files. It's best to just use MPC to play those files (using QT renderer). I tried Nero's filter once, and it crashed several times.

If I want to play new mov files that have AVC through DirectShow, then I just rename the .mov file to .hdmov. I find this a better solution than configuring MPC to use DS for mov files, because that breaks compatibility with old files. These old files will become less and less common, so in the future we can hopefully ditch the crappy QT renderer altogether.

Haali + CoreAVC is the best choice atm imo.

qt4/5/6/7 are versions of the quicktime player, nothing less, nothing more

.mov is a container that can store lots of different audio/video formats. recently apple switched to using avc in mov for their trailers (before they used sorenson)

obviously the container itself stays the same over time (normally ;) )

And I don't know how, but somehow the Nero Digital Parser disables the AAC Parser Filter, to play AAC Audio files. But the NDParser can't handle it because you get a big error. This is some really weird stuff.hm, seems the nero parser is, like every other good mp4 parser, not able to handle aac-in-mov (as braindead apple stores aac differently in mov than in mp4)

the nero parser is therefore a nogo for aac-in-mov

And besides, is it free? no

No thank you. It's all about finding the perfect MP4 Splitter, and at the moment that would be the one from Elecard imo.imho the best mp4 splitters are without a doubt haali and gabest

I said it before, and I'll say it again: demux the avc/aac streams from the mov container and put it back losslessly into mp4, and you won't have any of these issues. Don't be stubborn with mov.

hi, im new to the forums and got a question about MPC, often when i start it it returns a " MPC has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorr for the invonc.... "

if i check the details it says: AppName: mplayerc.exe AppVer: 6.4.8.7 ModName: kernel32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 00083001

and i choose to " dont send " report to ms.
if i do this like 4 times more the fifth time it starts with no crash.

Im running windows xp sp2 eng valid license no cracks
codecs installed:
XviD-1.0.3-20122004.exe
ac3filter_0_70b.exe
iv5setup.exe

nothing else, anyone know how to debug this in the best way?

iwe also searched the forums and found 0.

You don't have to do anything in the overrides panel:
just do a noraml install with Halii's Splitter, then in MPC go to Options -> Filters then uncheck the desired built-in filter (in this case MP4 source filter), now MPC uses the Halii's Splitter.

YES. use without any install.
All settings MPC get from *.ini file in our directory, codecs files to.
For example - try copy div*.ax or xvid.ax (with some .dll-s) from system32 folder to mpc folder and use overrides future.
Then uninstall all codecs from your system.

maybe the uninstall leaves some settings in the registry or mpc is able to register the filters itself?

btw how come a not registered filter is shown in the mpc override menu? how should mpc know that the filter exists?

NO.
MPC can store settings in ini file (check settings)
Open settings on Filters\overrides and drag to this window *.ax codec file

Haali Media Splitter requires some registry keys to activate it for each of the containers that it supports. Without those it won't work.

btw how come a not registered filter is shown in the mpc override menu? how should mpc know that the filter exists?the filters must be existing sw on the hd. they are added by browsing/pointing them, so mpc knows exactly where they are. they can be enabled/disabled by ticking/unticking them on the override panel.
it is a 'very old' feature of mpc. dunno how it goes technically, but it can be considered a kinda 'run-time-registration'. that's the way i use some dsfs, say, vsfilter and the nero ones. a quite handy feature, imo.

Gabest is working on making MPC region free for DVD drives. It will work pretty much like VLC, but it won't use libdvdcss for decrypting the region drive codes. I've tested it, and it works great. However, I can't upload this beta-test version to you because Gabest doesn't consider it stable, and he doesn't want this version to spread around because of that.
Cool. Are there also going to be improvements in DVD playback performance?

If you speak with Gabest, could you ask him to reb0rk some mpc subs rendering issues?

E.g. it's quite easy to crash subs renderer by feeding it malformed data (i.e. styles). In fact I believe you can take any .ass and change several bytes in "Styles" section and mpc won't show ANY styles during playback and attemp to access context menu "styles" option would cause a crash.

More user frendly interface will be more useful then decryption ability.

That's good news! I have got a feature request that you could hopefully pass on to Gabest.

I would be cool if MPC would be able to (optionally) detect if a .mov file is HD (H.264+AAC) and play it through DirectShow, if a graph can be created successfully, otherwise fallback to the default QuickTime renderer. Old movs should just be played with the QT renderer.

I know it is possible to configure MPC to (always) use DirectShow for .movs, but it sucks to switch back whenever I want to play a non-HD mov. Currently I just rename the .mov file if it is HD.

A stand-alone QT splitter/parser (like RealMediaSplitter.ax) would be cool to, for use in Media Center (or WMP for the wierdos who fancy that above MPC).

Why? because it's pointless to use the QT renderer since ffdshow can decode the mostly used codecs that happen to be in the mov container. ffdshow decodes ten times better than QT. Hell, I have serious issues playing back 480x360 resolutions in QT.

But if Gabest still reads this thread, he'll perhaps include this feature. I can't promise anything; it's up to him if he cares. Personally, I think there are much more important issues to prioritise with MPC than the mov container.

A simple option to fallback to QT renderer when DirectShow graph building fails (instead of displaying error) would do the trick.

Another reason for such an option, besides the backwards compatibility that I mentioned in my previous post, is that MPC can only play streams when the QT renderer is used.
