i think gabest removed the theora support again, for whatever reason (tough i thought i told him to enable it again?)

Gabest doesn't hate Theora, just native theora.

Sorry, theora is not supported natively and will never be, it is a seriously broken format. You have to use 3rd party filters.

Oh I see.
So native theora (theora in OggFile) is that bad?

I hope V_THEORA.mkv will be supported by MatroskaSplitter.ax...

EDIT:
Ok, I found it.

I think the latest Ogg Splitter that supported Theora to a degree, was the one from 26-02-2006 (this one is still hosted (at least, the internal one in MPC); see Liisachan's signature)

At the moment not only the MKV Splitter doesn't support Theora, but the whole thing. E.g. MKVToolNIX doesn't even recognize a Theora stream (the Vorbis stream in that same file > no problem).

illiminable (http://www.illiminable.com/ogg/) has released some new ogg codecs last month. Perhaps his splitter supports the whole bunch correctly.
I guess I have to make a choise again. For my package it's either the RadLight Ogg Splitter with Theora support but also with some Vorbis Audio timing problems, or the one from Gabest which handles Vorbis Audio pretty good at the moment but doesn't support Theora anymore (perhaps the reason for Gabest to remove Theora support was because it caused Vorbis Audio handling problems...), or the ogg codecs from illiminable (which I'm unfamiliar with at the moment).

Liisachan

In my test MPC can play Theora.ogg nicely with Haali's splitter + ffdshow (libtheora seems better than libavcodec here). illiminable's one is getting usable too. RadLight one is unadvisable. Last time I checked, frame-timing is not accurate, but jitter-ish i.e. fluctuating. Its uninstaller does a poor job too. As a side note, RealPlayer + xiphplins can play Theora too (the earliest support on win). Anyway I'd use MPC with Haali's filters for Theora.

Newer mkvmerge can mux V_THEORA too. If you see "ogg audio/video embedded in OGG" for mkvmerge -l that's it. That's why I'm hoping there will be a way to play theora.mkv on Windows.

As for Vorbis, CoreVorbis is probably the safest. ffdshow is ok as long as you don't use tremor. If you use tremor, you'll need celtic_druid's special build (ff_tremor) but just using libavcodec is easier. But ffdshow's def is tremor, right? I'm wondering why milan uses low-accuracy mode here...

For OGM, most probably Gabest's OggSplitter/MPC is better than OggDS 0.9.9.5 (0.9.9.6 is broken), but more testing is needed to make sure it works with AC3 and AAC in OGM.

Btw, I took a quick look at your page, and am having an impression that you are not supporting vobis acm (http://svn.xiph.org/tags/vorbisacm_20020708/) aka Vorbis-in-AVI. It's an almost-obsolete hack but it was already there before OGM was even born.

With my package I try to offer people a very small package of filters which are capable of handling many filetypes together with FFDShow as you may well know :P. And...well, I have never seen any AVI[Vorbis] file anywhere, so why should I include support? And to be honoust, the same goes for Theora. There's only a handfull OGG[Theora+Vorbis] files on the internet, and probably no one who's using my package is going to use for OGG[Theora+Vorbis] files I think.

There are a few things I'd like to see (fixed) in future releases of Gabest's filters:
-MPA Splitter: Does a great job splitting MP3 and AAC files, but with MP3 files it still shows the VBR file duration bug. For example I encoded a track with a duration of 10:33 to CBR 160Kbps and VBR 5 (Lame). The CBR file duration is shown correctly, but with the VBR file at the beginning it shows a duration of 10:54.
-MP4 Splitter: The issue with mono IMA4 sound (tyson bite).
And I don't know, but can some one tell me if FFDShow is ever going to support the other QuickTime formats like TWOS,ARAW?
-MPEG Splitter: I've seen this one got updates pretty often, but I can't tell what has changed actually.
There's one thing I'm having problems with, and that's with one particular MPG[MPV1+MP2] file I have. Perhaps it's a VBR video file I don't know, but uppon timeseeking in this file the video part hangs and the audio part continues. Timeseeking this file with the standard MPEG1 Splitter shipped with Windows XP is no problem at all!

Well, I was working with some newer ffdshow version from ffdshow-20060224.torrent so I just switched back to ffdshow-20051103.exe and everything works fine as usual. Sorry for wasting your time. :stupid:

@CoRoNe yes, that one. And I thought you were interested in supporting 'rare' formats, as OFR & WV are supported too. (btw, maybe mpp via DS too?)

Anyway now is not the time for theora. SSF! SSF! Gabest means it! SSF is now being supported by VSFilter (http://svn.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.cgi/guliverkli/trunk/guliverkli/src/filters/transform/vsfilter/DirectVobSubFilter.cpp?sortby=date&r1=549&r2=559&pathrev=559). I can't wait to test it

@Waleska 20051103 is celtic_druid's one and is reliable, except that CorePNG doesn't play (but almost no one would care)

DVD-Video with external subtitles is working now.

Newbie questions:

Will the next official build have this bugfix?

I mean, all the changes in the celtic_druid builds will be in the next official build from gabest?

Liisachan
27th March 2006, 17:22
@ Goras
Most probably. It's not that celtic_druid is creating his own version by modifying Gabest's source code. Celtic_druid is compiling (=making .exe file) faithfully using Gabest's files. So you can assume changes/fixes/new features in Celtic_druid's build are in the next official version too, unless anything unexpected happens.

I don't think this is a good idea:

All white-space will be compressed into one space character.
(ssf-specs.txt)

Many subbers put 2 spaces, not one, between 2 sentences. Sabbu even has the "Join Lines with 2 Spaces" options (maybe that's default).

In my testing, I had to use
"Shoot!\h\hI'm late, I'm late!"
instead of
"Shoot!  I'm late, I'm late!"

but ok for ZP +hdtvpump

Ok I have a bug report:
Using MPC 6.4.8.5 (and older versions) and disabling the inbuilt "MPEG PS/TS/PVA" source filter to try another TS filter such as HDTVPUmp http://www.dvbportal.de/projects/hdtvpump/ or TSFileSource http://nate.dynalias.net/TSFileSource/TSFileSource.html. When trying to play a TS it errors out with the generic "Cannot render the file" error.

Can anyone get this Quicktime file working with the latest Media Player Classic + ffdshow?

File is here: http://www.wendtnet.com/movies/Cat_Herders_360x243.mov (10 mb)

Here's a blog post about it: http://www.duncans.tv/?p=74

The video is the famous EDS Cat Herders commercial from an old Superbowl Ad. I've been trying to get the very best quality version of it but I can't find the 27 mb one. This is the best quality I could find.

From what I can tell it's SVQ1 video and Twos Complement (Big Endian) audio. When I load it into Media Player Classic it just locks up :(

Is there a way to demux Quicktime streams? I've figured out how to demux the audio but not the video. (Using Quicktime Player's 'Save wave' option)

It crashes easily espefially if RGB output is forcfed. Seems it likes YV/Overlay.

With this method it plays perfectly:

why ASS support is not implemented on *nix is actually quite a mystery to me. Check vlc-0.8.5-test. Unlike 0.8.4, it now supports SSA/ASS color and positioning, so afaik better than mplayer. vlc works on OS X too.

Should be fairly straightforward (especially since even the code is available). I think SSA and VSFilter are quite Window-centric. For instance, 134 in {\fe134} has meaning only for Win32 API. To support it on Linux, they would have to emulate this Windows Code Page. On Windows, this 134 can be directly passed to, for example, lfCharSet in LOGFONT. That's just a random example, but Mosu said he would ignore \fe in MKVToolnix for such a reason (iirc).
Also a drawing command in a {\p} section can be directly translated into a corresponding Win API32 function; even tho this part of ASS is very complicated as we all know, it's basically calling given functions in SDK. On Linux, maybe they would have to begin by emulating such functions, like WINE devs would do. (I'm not sure.)
It's NOT "fairly straightforward" anyway.

But you are right... they could at least support font color...

Long live to MPC for best-atm subtitle renderer (until Mr. Haali does his own :P) Totally agreed. ASS is really messy but really hackable too. It could even control the RGBA of each pixel of each frame.

But hey, no one knows what Haali could do when he means it... I'm feeling something revolutionary is going on now, including the hidden idea behind SSF.

Well you're true to some extend, but i don't think that many sub files actually use \p and \feXXX commands. At first, such complicated commands can be omited (though i don't think drawing will be actually much more complicated than on win32 gdi anyway)

-MPEG Splitter:
time seekings hangs with certain MPEG-1 files.
-MP4/MOV Splitter:
1. bad rendering of mono IMA4 sound.
2. support for TWOS audio?
(I really hope FFDShow will also come up with ARAW audio support soon)

btw. Does anyone notice that the video part of MPG[AVC1+AAC] files isn't shown? While in the filter properties you can see FFDShow is loaded...
