It seems the latest versions of MPC [2006-02-16] and the OGG directshow filter 0.995 won't work together when using the latest Haali media splitter [2006-01-30]. I get an unknown GUID on file open for MKV with OGG audio. Enabling the builtin splitter works just fine.
Unfortunately, the builtin splitter won't work with anamorphic MKV played back using ffdshow 2005-12-22 - it always shows 1:1 pixels (with Use Overlay Mixer in ffshow enabled, of course). All later ffdshow builds cause a warning dialog to appear which warns of an invalid C call when any avi or avs file is opened, regardless of decoder used. My CPU is an Athlon XP 2500+, so perhaps all the later builds are SSE2? I can't find any newer builds than the above version that are MMX/SSE only.
However, both the internal and Haali's MKV splitter will work with the Nero MPEG 1/2/4/AVC decoder, which always shows the correct aspect ratio.
So everything's ok so long as I don't have to play an anamorphic MKV file with OGG audio and non-mod16 resolution. The nero decoder pads non-mod16 with an ugly green bar on either the bottom or right side of the frame. Using ffdshow would mean incorrect AR, and to make it work would require using Haali's splitter, which would prevent the OGG audio stream from decoding.
I'd be very pleased if anyone could point to a newer ffdshow that doesn't need SSE2 and/or their preferred OGG stream decoder which works with Haali's splitter.

I used FFdshow's video decoder filter
ah, ok... that makes sense as CoreAVC won't respond to AR signalling 'till now...
Hmmm.... That file contains Sorenson Video 3 with MP3 audio: -
I did know that and the strange thing is that I did get to work... before I had to reinstall XP (because of a silly HD crash) but I can't reproduce my settings anymore :( testet every splitter in conjunction with every decoder/ renderer...

I noticed that quite some time ago. The workaround currently is to manually add ".bmp" to the filename when you're typing it. Then it saves the image as it's expected.

A lot of SVQ3 MOVs I've got really stutter. There's one with MP3, one with AAC, and yet another one with "TWOS" Audio. The last one with "TWOS" Audio is actually the DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil Trailer. Of course TWOS I can't play, but the SVQ3 video part does play normally.

MOV playback results of MPC (09022006) + FFDShow:
MOV[AVC1+AAC] & MOV[MP4V+AAC] --> good.
MOV[SVQ3+MP3] --> CPU: 100%, audio: very bad and a lot of glitches, video: very bad.
MOV[SVQ3+AAC] --> CPU: normal, audio: normal, video: very choppy.
MOV[SVQ3+TWOS] --> CPU: normal, audio: ... (available?), video: good (hmm!), time seek: good.
MOV[SVQ3+QDM2 or IMA4] --> CPU: normal, audio: ... (available?), video: very choppy.
MOV[SVQ1+IMA4 or ARAW] --> CPU: normal, audio: ... (available?), video: good (the RTCW trailer has some colour problems though), time seek: good.
MOV[CVID+TWOS or IMA4] --> fails to render at all.
MOV playback results of MPC (18022006) + FFDShow:

Still I'm very impressed with the capabilities of the MP4 Splitter concerning splitting MOV files though! ;)
I also tested the OGG Splitter with THEORA --> CPU: normal, audio: normal, video: the video image hangs.
But with another THEORA file the video part crashes and only audio is rendered.
First THEORA file I used --> http://www.polycrystal.org/lego/movies/A_New_Computer--small.ogg (3,46MB)
Second THEORA file --> http://www.novell.com/linux/xglrelease/transparency.ogg (3,74MB)
Although I didn't mind testing this, I find it really irritating all the updates come without a changelog! This way we have to guess the things that changed :(. For example; does anybody know what changes were made to the MPEG2 Decoder filter??
I do have another question.
What's the purpose of Gabest's RealMedia Splitter when FFDShow isn't capable of handling RealMedia (besides RV10,20 that is)? We always have to install Real Alternative for this reason...

Well, he's doing it for free you know. It's either this way, or a changelog and less frequent updates of MPC.Yes, you're right. But it's just that information can save you so much time. Information is everything. Just a little bit of information would suffice imo; like "OGG Splitter: added THEORA support" for example. Just my two cents.
It's just that I like the idea of playing as much content as possible with some splitters and FFDShow. And we're well underway if I might say. But I do really appreciate all the work Gabest (and co. ;) ) has done so far.
There is a realmedia decoder for other types if you didn't know.True, I don't know. Which one would that be then?
SeeMoreDigital, I don't have QuickTime installed, so I also wasn't able to make such a file, so thank you.
I don't know if you know the http://codeccorner.com site..
This site has a lot of testing material, mostly video only, and in the QT/MOV section you can find a MOV[SVQ1] for instance, but such a file in the shape of SVQ3 isn't available. Are you able to encode the uncompressed sample in the AVI section to SVQ3 for testing material? (well, it's just that I dont feel like watching this casting.mov all the time :p)

@ Gabest:
I just dragged some OGG[Vorbis] files into MPC and Zoom Player (with the external OGG Splitter installed) and I noticed that with half of all the Vorbis files I have or so, the OGG Splitter has some time seeking difficulties. In this case playback starts from the beginning again and time is frozen (almost looks like the program hangs or something). It's kinda weird though since with the previous release this wasn't an issue.

I'm not sure if this is your case but that can happen when Haali's splitter is enabled (ie MPC's internal splitter is disabled). I asked Haali about it a while ago, and iirc it's not a bug but a known limitation.

Well, it was fixed for sure. Doesn't matter if it's vfr or not. All is working superb :) Apart from some small, but annoying glitches:
The problem (MPC's sub renderer is 1 frame too late (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=565649&aid=1280326&group_id=82303)) is still there, if the file is MKV or DSM with softsubbed RealVideo. I assume it's the problem of MPC's internal sub renderer, because VSFilter works ok for the same files.
Here's small samples (~50KB) for anyone who'd like to test them.

cvs builds always have some strange behaviour. say, the latest cvs builds does not link ffdshow as postprocessor when playing dvd, movs don't play (or plays crappy), aso, aso. as i've experienced, such kinda errors always gets healed when a stable version is released.

If the last stable works for mov's then surely that is because mov is set to quicktime not dshow or because MPC didn't have an internal mov splitter back then so something else is being used. You could have the cvs setup exactly the same so I don't see that it means much.

The latest MPC build does not permit smooth play back of SVQ3 video in MOV using FFdshow's or Nero's (NeQTDec.ax) DSdec filter.
Could a totally separate MOV (instead a combined MP4/MOV) "Source filter" option help with this issue?

My apologies if this has been asked recently, but has there been any plans for the built-in MPEG-2 Video filter to decode 4:2:2 MPEG-2 files? libmpeg2, which I believe the filter is based upon, is capable of outputting 4:2:2 files, so it should be possible without too much hassle. I wish I had more time so I could help do it myself,

Am I the only one who would find an "Load Audio" in Menu near "Load Subtitle" usefull?
Currently external .mp3 Audio Tracks (often alternative languages) are only selectable in MPC when its name is exactly the same as the video file. Now, if there are more than one external Audio Tracks (and with Language indicated in name etc.) it would be really usefull to be able to load any Audio Track simply per File Menu...

One thing has been bugging me for a long while. Since Gabest seems to be quite active again nowadays, I hope he might be able to fix this. Both the internal subtitle renderer and VSFilter use a lot of CPU power. But only for VobSubs (idx+sub), srt subs work fine and use almost no cpu at all. Playing an xvid movie with VobSubs requires about 3 to 4 times as much cpu as playing that same movie file with the subs disabled. I have already tried all possible combinations of VSFilter settings. I have tried older versions of VSFilter, all have the same problem. But the predecessor of VSFilter, DirectVobSub v2.23 works OK! The ffdshow subtitle renderer can also display the same subs using only little cpu. Please fix this in VSFilter.

I'm not really all that up-to speed with subtitle reading filters etc...
But do you still need to install/use VS Filter and/or VOBsub Filter with these new MPC test builds.
I seem to able to read VOBsubs in MP4 and VOB okay (I don't have any VOBsub in AVI samples).
Cheers

As for subs from MPC vs VSFilter, I'm always wondering about this: why do subs from VSFilter look prettier when the video size is 100% whereas MPC's subs have much higher resolution (which is very obvious when video is enlarged)?
VSFilter @ Video ~ 200%

MPC's subs @ Video ~ 200%: MPC's subs = much higher-resolution

Nevertheless...
VSFilter @ Video 100%: Oddly enough, at this size, subs from VSFilter look clearer

MPC's subs @ Video 100%: Why blurred while MPC's subs should be essentially higher-quality???

Well, I use Overlay Mixer, so I need an external subtitle filter. If you use VMR-9, than you can use the internal subtitle renderer of MPC (which is almost the same as VSFilter).

The question about MPC renderer and VSFilter is still controversial.
The good thing in mpc is that you assign target resolution for rendering (i.e. in my case the fullscreen resolution). Whilst, afaik, VSFilter renders always in the script resolution. I.e. if script resolution is 640*480 then watching @ 1024x768 the subs will be upsampled, right?
As for MPC, I also heard some information that it does supersampling on rendering as well, effectively rendering at higher than target resolution, but I wasn't able to confirm it from other sources.
BTW, what actually annoys me is that VSFilter and MPC sometimes produce non-identical results, for same video+subs and same settings.

That's obvious because VSFilter is in the upstream: a downstream video renderer gets the image that is already subbed by VSFilter, so if you resize your 640x480 video to 1024x768, the algo is "draw subs on a 640x480 canvas, then enlarge the canvas" and so the sub resolution is 640x480. That's what happens with VSFilter. On the other hand, MPC's VMR9 Renderless thing does not render the video before adding subs, i.e. the algo is "First enlarge the image to 1024x768, and then draw subs on that canvas" so the sub resolution is 1024x768. Basically that's how it is afaik...
Technically tho, VSFilter's internal algo is sub-pixel too when, for instance, antialiasing. That's why you can specify non-integer border width in ASS.
Softsubs are like HTML pages. The user may change the font-size etc as he/she likes. For example a weak-sighted user might prefer bigger font size than specified in ASS. Such customization is possible thru MPC's "play | subtitles | styles" That's something softsubs can and hardsubs can't. It's one of softsubs' fortes.
So, basically, when softsubbing, we should try not to be too dependent on a specific sub renderer's default settings... It's just like we shouldn't make a web page that works only for IE and only when font size = small. I guess quite a few people use mplayer on Linux, or other sub renderers, so it'd be pointless even if VSFilter and MPC were 100% compatible. In other words, if absolute positioning is critical, you might want to hardsub that part.

The only thing I noticed with the version of today is that it is capable of splitting QDM2 for FFDShow to decode. Playback is very bad though :P
Does anybody know what kind of splitter is (or will be) capable of splitting NSV[VP31+MP3]?
