Well, it was fixed for sure. Doesn't matter if it's vfr or not. All is working superb :) Apart from some small, but annoying glitches: That's real good news. What Gabest fixed is a very basic problem, and now we can enjoy ourselves based on new MPC :D --OT but today I heard about Aegisub (http://aegisub.cellosoft.com/). It seems to enable you to hardsub a VFR clip via timecodes files. A cool feature.
Unicode rules :D What's bidi? bidi = Bidirectional = algo to mix left-to-right texts (english etc) and right-to-left texts (arabic etc) in one line: Not just supporting right-to-left languages, MPC now can display, for instance, an Arabic title that contains an English word.
Unicode rules, Gabest rocks! ^_^

By the way, Gabest has now added reading for this style of meta tagging in mp4 :)
Well, of course you're right but imho the topic changed quite a bit since this statement has been made and I commented on this. I don't care too much about this feature in mpc since my favorite audio player foobar2000 supports it completely and strangely chapters in audio files are more important for me than chapters in video files. I'll stop posting on that matter in this thread, sorry. :)

6.4.8.6 Officially Released
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&release_id=368904
Release Name: MPC 6.4.8.6
Notes:
d3dx9_27.dll is a separate download now because it is longer needed to run mpc, however to use pixel shaders it has to be put in the dll path.

That is great! You got an actual error message. My copy just pretends to work correctly. I get no video and no errors when I use 6.4.8.6. Oh well, time for a complete system overhaul.

Overall the new version works for me, but with a somewhat higher memory usage.
But I've found a regression regarding MOV playback. With MPC version 6.4.8.4 I could play at least the video track (SQV3) of some MOV files (handled by ffdshow 2005-08-22). With MPC version 6.4.8.6 it will not play the audio nor the video. The MOV files I'm talking about can be found here: http://www.starwars.com/clonewars/microseries/chapter/archive.html

So is everyone having problems or what?
From the previous two posts it seems that the latest official version is buggy. Any particular reasons why? Anyone know?
Elias
7th November 2005, 04:51
Since everyone is having issues with the latest MPC, I've got to ask: was the latest official version uploaded by Gabest? He didn't notify me about it. He usually does. Anyway, if this stable release isn't stable, then stick to th CVS I uploaded in the first post, I don't think it's much difference between them.

Well, the problem with mov files I've found happens with both the official 6.8.4.6 release (sourceforge) and the previously released 6.4.8.6 "beta" (linked in the first post).
But it seems restricted to that specific files. I've tried another mov file (Matrix Revolutions trailer 1024x532) and it did work fine (also SVQ3 video, but AAC audio).

I cannot play back AVC any longer in mov files. AAC in mov doesn't work, and probably won't, because Gabest found it difficult to implement full support for mov through his bento4 splitter. But AVC in mov should work, I guess Gabest b0rked some code with the latest release :) I'm sure AVC worked in mov with 6.8.4.5 or did it not?

Maybe this is not MPC's problem, but just in case:
I happened to find that MPC and MADFilter (http://sourceforge.net/projects/maddxshow/) (1.0.0.3) don't mix well. After disabling MPC's internal MPEG Audio Decoder, MP3 file plays fine on MPC,
but MP3 in AVI is foobared if played on MPC (doesn't play at all, or playing in an unstable speed).
The same AVI plays fine on GraphEdit etc.

AAC in mov doesn't work, and probably won't ...
Strange that you said that: I have lots of mov trailers from apple.com (normal and hd trailers, which contains h264/AAC 2.0/5.1) and I have tried several of them in the morning and plays them fine ... (Except that files with 5.1 sound is just stereo, but it's not Gabest fault, I have tried them in Quicktime: -> stereo too, so maybe a broken sound implementation by apple (I have a quadrophonic sound system))
I haven't tried AVC yet ... Where can I find files for that ?
Have Quuicktime player or Quicktime Alternative installed on your comp ? :)

the easiest way to fix the mov problems is to get gabest to not support mov at all in his splitter
after all there is no point at all in using mov imho ;)

AAC in MKV is rather soft compared to Vorbis due to no post-gain tag. Especially when you're down-mixing a 5.1 AAC to stereo during playback, you get an additional decrease in volume.
So my questions:
1. Why does the volume decrease further during down-mixing? We need a volume gain built into the AAC-decoder,I think. other 5.1 formats like AC3 don't decrease volume during down-mixing in WinDVD (for example), so should be possible.
2. If you implent such a gain, would it be possible to built some kind of post-gain into the decoder (just like in corevorbis)? And define a tag that could be written by BeSweet, for example?
That would make AAC more usable especially on notebooks. My movies are encoded 5.1 AAC, watching them on my laptop with down-mixing to stereo (laptop has only 2 speaker ;)) it's almost unhearable..
Thx

after all there is no point at all in using mov imho ;)I concur that. We have mp4 now, what can mov do that mp4 cannot? I know a lot of things mp4 can do that mov cannot. Open source for instance. Anyway, Gabest said that mov is somehow difficult to implement full support for through the bento4 splitter, and imho, I think there are things that need to be fixed with MPC of much higher priority than the mov issues. Just put the renderer for mov on QuickTime and you'll have no problems, or use Nero's NDParser.ax for mov files, it works great. I'm currently re-assessing whether or not I need Nero at all now, given that I only use Recode2 to generate 6Ch AAC streams and VOB subtitles in MP4.
I reckon I can live without VOB subs but I not 6Ch AAC and I can use YAMB/MP4Box to generate my chapter points and mux either XviD or x264 video streams into MP4
And MOV has become even less necessary since QT7 supports MP4 streaming better than QT6 did ;)

I'd rather want an MPC version that doesn't contain any decoders or filters at all. I'm fine with the player alone and inbuilt filters are imo bloat, you could use mplayer, VLC or sth. like that to begin with then imo. So please give us a MiniMPC that contains no filters and no webserver and such. Subtitler may stay, even though I never use it as imo VMR9 output sucks anyways.

i hope this will take d3dx9_27+.dll. IIRC these change for every dx9 release (ie, april, may, june dx9 release). i remember running into 4K demos that required a specific dx9 file (ie ?_23.dll). it turns out i loaded the month after the one suggested in the NFO file and it wouldn't work as the only file in the system was ?_24.dll...
edit: a 4k demo called "Parsec" required the Feb release of DX9.0c. i loaded a March or later version and the demo still asked for "d3dx9_24.dll." i looked in the folder, and, i think there was like a d3dx9_25.dll or higher. i simply renamed it to (or rather copied it to) d3dx9_24.dll and all was dandy.
i'd suggest that MPC 6.4.8.6 ask for d3dx9_27.dll and above (or whatever number)

So.... given the current Nero AAC situation (which is not likely to change). What we need is a more flexible (freebie) AAC encoder that offers 6Ch encoding ;)
It's a shame the iTunes AAC encoder can't be used to create 6Ch AAC streams.... like it's possible to do with QT7 Pro (which sadly you have to pay for also) :(
Surely there must be some clever people out there who can develop an 6Ch AAC-LC encoder (which can handle 6Ch AC3 streams as an input source)!
If development costs are an issue, I'm willing to put some money into the venture. Anybody else feel the same?

I'm sure I missed something, but what's so special about AAC anyway? I realize this is a bit off-topic, but why is everyone so excited about using it? For movie encoding, why not just include the original unmodified AC3 or DTS stream? I know my receiver won't decode AAC over the S/PDIF cable, and isn't quality lost in transcoding from a lossy format to another lossy format? And if AAC is lossless, what have you gained by transcoding the original AC3 or DTS to AAC?
Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I discovered that this does not work with OGM. If I save video in AVI format, I got é or à or ç but as soon as I mix OGG with my video and save it (using virtualdubmod) all accents are gone. A problem with OGM?
Liisachan
8th November 2005, 06:09
@RyosukeFC: AAC, per se, is not the "only one." Vorbis is good too. In higher bitrate, we have of course MP3, and much more (Musepack, WavPack, OptimFROG, FLAC, TTA, APE, etc, etc). Some of them are usable as the audio part of the movie too.
But (AVC+AAC).mp4 is today's de-fact standard for .mp4, and if you want to use AVC .mp4 is, probably, a natural choice. For one thing, you can make (AVC+MP3).mp4 or (AVC+AAC).mkv, but QuickTime doesn't like those files.
In other words, I'd say "they use AAC because they want to use AVC with it."
Another reason is technical interests: HE-AACv2 is not high-quality in the absolute measure, since it's designed for very low bitrate (48kbps or so). Anyone can ABX 15/15 if compred with the source. But it's relatively less bad as 48kbps, and parametric stereo is a challenging technology. (Whether or not you use it for practical purposes is another matter, though.)
Yet another reason is, AAC is usually higher-quality than MP3 at the same rate. Nero and Apple and Real all came in with AAC and AAC is now very popular. MP3 has its forte, but I guess many people here in doom9 forum like to try new things.
@LordIntruder: Texts stored in MKV/Ogg etc are usually Unicode (UTF-8), so they can be safely multilingual, but unfortunately that is not true for OGM. Basically OGM is not Unicode-based. 0.9.9.6 might be different, but 99.9% of OGM is 0.9.9.5-compatible. As a result OGM is not good at handling multilingual texts. However, since OGM is not Unicode-based, it works better on Windows 98 (i.e. the OS that is not Unicode-based) than other Unicode-based formats would. Each format has its good points & weak points :)
PS
If I save video in AVI format, I got é or à or ç but as soon as I mix OGG with my video and save it (using virtualdubmod) all accents are gone. A problem with OGM? é or à or ç should be mix well with OGM as long as your Locale is W.Europe. Maybe that's VirtualDubMod's problem and not MPC's problem.

LordIntruder> OGM is a dead format. I would suggest you to use MKV instead. AFAIK one of the advantages of MKV over OGM is that it uses Unicode. So your "fault" is probably a limitation of OGM.
Liisachan> As some people from HydrogenAudio proved, AAC in current implementations is quite often worse then MP3. But MP3 is only 2ch currently and I don't think the new MP3 surround will ever become a standard. The only formats that can beat MP3 always are MPC and OGG Vorbis. MPC seems to be dead, but Vorbis probably has a bright future and supports multi-channel. The problem with Vorbis is the fact, that in order to have support for it in standalone players, they have to support Matroska container first. There is no regular way to get Vorbis in MP4 or AVI container. I know you can do it, but it is not standardised (did I get the word right?). For this reasons it makes sence to use AAC.
The best AAC encoder seems to be WinAMP. You can use WinAMP's filters in BeLight a you don't have to download 100MB of Nero's all-in-one, which can do everything, but nothing correctly.
Regarding d3dx9_27.dll, what are pixel shaders good for in video playback? Does it work if I put the .dll in MPC's folder?
