@Gabest: Thanks for your effort that brought the best version ever ! (but I think it always can be told when a new version is out.)

@Everybody: and of course for this small community at doom9 forum, who will bring us always alpha builds that we can test.
Thank you too !

Insiders' information tells me that gabest might do that :)

Though whenever he will do it in the end... No one knows, not even gabest himself i'd say :)

Hi guys,

Some of us over in the CoreAVC thread have observed some playback issues with MPEG-4 AVC streams within the .TS container!

Is this a known problem?

MPC and Gabest's MatroskaSplitter don't recognize WavPack in MKV i.e. Codec ID=A_WAVPACK4, whilst Haali's splitter does.

Sample (http://www.faireal.org/tmp/SoC_%5bXviD+WavPack+MP3%5d-007.mkv) 2.1MB/16 sec.

What kind of codecs do you use? Quicktime Alternative?
I use for quicktime: ffdshow:
- video: H.264, SVQ1, SVQ3, QTRLE
- audio: MP3, DTS, AAC, QDM2

The only problem is with QDM2 audio quality (horrible, but no sluttering), which ffdshow mentioned too ('incomplete')...

Now (Video+WavPack).mkv (http://www.faireal.org/tmp/SoC_%5bXviD+WavPack+MP3%5d-007.mkv) plays flawlessly, actually better than played thru Haali Splitter. Thank you very much, Gabest!!!

i think the qdm2 audio quality has nothing to do with ffdshow decoder...
try play it with qt player see whether the quality problem still exist
(afaik the qdm2 adio codec quality isnt good)

I just tried the lastest build and I still have the crash with the crash-test.mkv.
All the internal filters are checked and I use the lastest ffdshow build. Any ideas ?

No more crash too with XviD+WavPack+MP3 sample (Even I don't have wavpack installed).
About the WavPack can I "activated" it from ffdshow?

crash-test.mkv now plays fine for me...

It seems my problem comes from "nvtrpdemux.ax" (Nvidia Transport demux). This is the error I get:
AppName: mplayerc.exe AppVer: 6.4.8.8 ModName: nvtrpdemux.ax
ModVer: 4020.177.0.0 Offset: 000013f4

Could you tell me which codecs you have selected in ffdshow (video and audio)? I think MPC crashes because it loads nvtrpdemux.ax.

Thanks

hello,

i am wondering if there is a way to get MPC to play files as they are being captured from dvb. programs like "zoomplayer" can do this quite easily, but MPC gives a "file not found error" with this latest version. with 6.4.8.7, it gives "cannot render file"

thankyou :)

@CoRoNe: please don't forget that these are "unofficial alpha" builds or dialy snapshots, that not the author has compiled. So it can easily possible that the developer (eg. gabest) had gone to sleep and his work is undone at that time, and the compiler (eg. celtic_druid) nothing knew about that ...

The question about MPC renderer and VSFilter is still controversial. I've just found another element. MPC supports ASS2 while VSFilter doesn't. The relative-to-which? concept in ASS2 (and in USF) is quite important for accurate control of subpic positioning.

If anyone knows more about ASS2, please reply to ASS2 or Extended Advanced SSA (SSA 4.00++) & MPC/VSFilter (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=108356). Tyia. Honestly I was a bit embarrassed for not knowing ASS2 for more than a few months now. Gabest is too great......

But incidentally celtic_druid's ffdshow 2005-11-13 crashes with CorePNG.avi (milan fixed that bug around 2005-11-15)

Now, everything in celtic_druid's Media Player Classic/external filters/unicode/ (http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/Media%20Player%20Classic/external%20filters/unicode/) is fresh, except VSFilter. Happy testing!

Just in case, I tar-ed up and backuped the previous versions (http://ffdshow.faireal.org/mirror/Media%20Player%20Classic/external%20filters/unicode/prev_versions.tar); And here's
newest_versions.7z (http://ffdshow.faireal.org/mirror/Media%20Player%20Classic/external%20filters/unicode/newest_versions.7z) for lazy downloaders.

Edit: (7z 7z 7z).tar was a bad idea. I repacked newest_versions as (solid).7z and got about the half size.

I think that particular MPEG-1 stream is slightly borked....

According to Gspot it's an elementary stream, but clearly it's not as it includes audio!

Running the stream thru' VCDGear, could possibly repair it. Or you culd try muxing it into the MP4 container ;)

So are you sure it's really 8 times in *each* direction? Cause it's 64 pixels downsampled to one, a bit too much I'd say.
8x8!!!
Now I know why CPU load is so high.
How about a manual control?

8 is hard-coded everywhere, not variables. Example from RTS.cpp (http://svn.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.cgi/guliverkli/trunk/guliverkli/src/subtitles/RTS.cpp?view=markup&sortby=date)

bool CRenderedTextSubtitle::Init(CSize size, CRect vidrect)

...
m_size = CSize(size.cx*8, size.cy*8);
m_vidrect = CRect(vidrect.left*8, vidrect.top*8, vidrect.right*8, vidrect.bottom*8);
...

Haali Render fix the speed problems :D
And I still don't think it's impossible. Well, I know what you mean, but that's not a fair comparison since Haali's filter doesn't support SSA/ASS. Altho I really wish it would.

If you are not happy with the VMR9 renderless, why not just using Overlay & VSFilter? That should be much faster already, and the output guality should be about the same with proper hw settings.

B.F.

@B.F. Maybe subbers' demands are too high. RadLight 'can' render SSA/ASS too.

My renderer calls back to the code inside MPC. The subs are identical to what VMR shows because they are generated by the same executable code in MPC. There are some plans to have my own subtitle renderer, but for now they are drawn by MPC.

Liisachan
9th March 2006, 16:16
oh, I see, B.F. was talking about your "renderer" and not about your splitter vs. Gabest's. Your renderer is radically faster for me too, Haali, especially when resizing video by specific combinations (among other things, bicubic+PS2).

My renderer calls back to the code inside MPC. The subs are identical to what VMR shows because they are generated by the same executable code in MPC. That shows even more clearly that Gabest's (Avery Lee's ?) sub renderer in MPC is fast enough i.e. the slowness in MPC's VMR9 renderless mode is not due to the sub renderer. Although more speed up might be possible...

Liisachan
9th March 2006, 16:44
I did more testing, and the result was not coherent. On my machine, if "Use regular offscreen plain surfaces" and Bicubic are selected, VMR 9 is faster. "Haali's Video Renderer" is faster if "User texture surfaces and render video in 3D" + Bicubic are seleced. Like I posted before, "Haali's Video Renderer" takes a while to open a video file, but once it is opened, it plays fine.

Anyway, B.F. if you think the subs from MPC are too slow, the first thing you should try is lowering the value in "Options | Subtitles | Maximum texture resolution". That would force MPC to use lower resolution. If your value is, say, "1024x768" and if we could assume MPC's algo is x8, the resolution would be x4 if you selected "512x384" (faster but lower-quality too). Also, increasing "Number of subpictures to buffer ahead" should make MPC faster, subtitle-wise.

That is EXACTLY the point. Reduce subpic to 0 and renderer is slow as hell. Of course I usually have 3 and don't experience much problems. But any value >0 disables karaoke, turns \move into \jump and so on :P

The thing which could cure that would be variable supersampling (adaptive). I.e. things which are rendered once shown many frames (casual subs) should be rendered 8x8, no problem there. But things which cannont be buffered w/o distortion (\k, \kf, \move, \fad etc) should be adjustable in terms of supersampling.

Cause atm I have to choose in many cases, either no effects and smooth playback, or noticably slower playback with effects :)

I am still having the problem of high cpu usage on Vobsub type subs with both VSFilter and the internal sub renderer. It happens on 9 out of 10 vobsubs. However, SRT textsubs work perfectly fine. I have already tried changing the various subtitle related settings, including the ones discussed in the above few posts.

So what is the major difference between rendering vobsubs (bitmaps?) and srt (text) subs?

I am not a real programmer, so probably I am wrong. Still... what you are saying is a bit weird. in a nutshell you suggested:
(1) MPC's subs are slow if temporal resolution is 1 render/1 frame, and it's faster if it is 1 render/3 frames. (That is a fact.)
(2) Therefore, MPC's sub would be faster if spatial resolution is lower.
---
(1) is caused by temporal res. and what you are suggesting is lowering spatial res. This may be wrong, but my hunch tells me "That is not the slow part." Making *8 to *4 would help a little, but not much. It's just an internal calc. I feel that way because VSFilter uses the same algo and VSFilter is faster, which suggests, that VMR9 plugin is slower because of its way of video rendering, not because of sub res. Again I may be wrong. Just a random hunch :)

As a side note, I believe in Haali :D Haali let a miracle happen already in that "Haali's Video Renderer". Plus, Haali is the one who improved MatroskaSplitter (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72086) first so that you could embed font files. It was 2 years ago, around March 2004. Needless to say, Haali's splitter was the first that hacked MP4 too. Talk about another genius.
