well "stereo" is ok as stereo doesnt mean 2 channels strictly speaking

lemme quote wikipedia:
In technical usage, stereo or stereophony means sound recording and sound reproduction that uses stereographic projection to encode the relative positions of objects and events recorded. A stereo system can include any number of channels, such as the multichannel audio 5.1- and 6.1-channel systems used on high-end film and television productions.maybe calling it "multichannel" would be more user understandable?

mp4box doesnt use any phrases for the channelcount

as i said it simply sets "1" for mono and "2" for stereo, as the specs define it

the rest is done by mpc

the specs are clear that there are only two allowed values: 1 and 2

the rest is not spec compliant, whether this is a good thing or not is a different question
for the sake of having a nice display in mpc i wouldnt want the specs to be broken. gabest should simply replace "stereo" with "multichannel" and everything will be fine...

I'm sure users would want to have a clearer indication as to whether the AAC streams within their MP4 encodes contain 2 channels or 6 channels.... I don't think the would want to see something like this: -

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/7183/yambremuxwith6chand2chaacaudio.png

.... whether it said "stereo" or "multi-channel"...

For all we know, when the "1" an "2" specs were originally drawn up nobody gave any thought for the inclusion of 6Ch (5.1) or even 8Ch (7.1) audio streams!

yeah, but this doesnt change that the mp4 specs dont cover storing the channelnumber on the container level
is there a field in all the other containers, which tells you the channelnumber of an audio stream? is there the need for this field? is it the job of the container to tell you the channelnumber? obviously MPEG decided that there is no need for such a field...

if you want this to be changed send MPEG a mail ;)

This is what you see in MPC when you play MPEG-2 VOB files: -

http://img104.imageshack.us/img104/9203/mpeg2vob2ps.jpg

So it would seem, yes there is a field in some of the other "MPEG" containers...

I wonder if the people who write the new MPEG specs refer to previous MPEG specs... for useful information such as this?

For Matroska, yes...:)One begs the question... Could you over-ride or provide an option to over-ride the way MP4Box displays this information?

One has to wonder how important is it to conform 100% to "the MPEG specification" in this particular regard?

I wonder too, if anybody has checked to see if an amendment has already been made. Or suggested that an amendment should be made?

For which part ? Extraction or Muxing ?Ideally both...

When an 6Ch AAC .AAC stream is muxed into or de-muxed from MP4, the "6Ch" information is lost

Thankfully, when you extract an 6Ch AAC stream from an .MP4 file with YAMB to an MPEG-4 ADTS in .AAC stream it is displayed in MPC as having 6 channels: -

May I ask if you are 100% sure that the MPEG-4 spec have not been amended.

May I also ask how allowing for the provision of altering one digit (ie: a "6" instead of a "2"), is going to "fuck up" anything!

I'm all for specifications... but I'm also able to understand that specifications are not 100% accurate from the date they were originally conceived. And like most things in life, they can under-go change.

At the end of the day it's people like us that are using all these applications and tools more than anybody else... I dare say, more so than any of the guys in "white coats" who draw-up these specs.

With this in mind, do you (or anybody else) know how to get in-touch with the creators of these specs so we can put forward our proposed amendments... as a "unified group" of forum members?

SMD, sorry to say this, but you dont have a clue and also not the will to even get a clue by reading the specs

all you are thinking about is that MPC tells you something that is correct, but you dont like what it tells you. and therefore it should be changed, altough your way to change this would break the specs and therefore potentially fuck up other players than the one you are using
thats imho plain ignorance

you dont have the will to check yourself or even ask other people whether there are ways to get your goal reached without breaking the specs
you dont have the will to ask gabest to change his player in a way it fits what you want.
you dont have the will to ask jeanlf to get mp4box do what you want

instead you go for the easiest way for you and that is to write a post on doom9 and bug kurtnoise to hack your files, altough yamb is obviously the last tool that should be used for what you want to achieve

With respect, it's not that I do not have "the will" to do this. I don't have the same level of understanding of the specs as you and the necessary resources to obtain "up-to date" versions of the specs (I understand the cost quite a bit).

This is why your services are most important... and why we call upon you to answer such queries!

When armed with the necessary information I will approach (and/or support anyone who approaches) any party who is willing to achieve the target goal.... Which in this case is... getting software media players to display the correct channel information....

Many thanks again for your kind efforts in this regard,

If the number is stored in some other place what is the point of this field then? mplayer devs and devs like gabest have seen many containers so I trust them more than others. When the specs say 1=mono and 2=stereo then it's very inviting to use 6=5.1. Shouldn't read reasonable specs otherwise 0=mono and 1=multichannel, I'm not well informed regarding containers and crunching bits and bytes so I hope there are more qualified opinions.

Hi guys,

A new build is out (http://yamb.unite-video.com/Yamb-1.5_20060301.zip) just for testing...

What's new:
- Update MediaInfo.dll (0.7.1.1)
- Timecode for split part supports milliseconds (i.e hh:mm:ss.ccc)
- Add a new Tab dedicated to tags (enable it in Options). I added this because during splitting or joining mp4box remove them. So, now we are able to read/write/remove mp4/m4a tagged files. Mp4tags is of course mandatory to write/remove tags. I'll add AtomicParsley asap. For the reading, I use my own library...;)

Next steps: fix "remove" bug, add chapters viewer/editor (almost finished) and improve extract infos part.

Feel free to test it. :)

btw, as I said in BeLight's thread, development has slown these days coz I'm busy with others things. So, my free time is very limited until April.

There's something missing with your MP4Box build of 20060301. When I tried to mux a file, a error message popped up about MP4Box.exe saying libmmd.dll was missing.
The previous MP4Box build did not have that error message.

Hey... I like the way you've laid out this window: -

http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/2406/yamb18vt.png

I see from this build the way the chapters have to be written/structured as a text file has changed....

Before they could be written/structured like this: -
00:00:00.000 The Beginning
00:00:05.640 Four Wise Men
00:00:09.040 Obi-Wan and Anakin 01
00:00:12.880 Yoda 01
00:00:14.440 Obi-Wan and Anakin 02
00:00:17.360 Mace Windu 01
00:00:18.400 Anakin 01
00:00:20.960 Mace Windu 02
00:00:26.640 Anakin 02
00:00:31.920 Mace Windu 03
00:00:34.600 Yoda 02
00:00:41.040 Obi-Wan and Anakin 03

Now they have to be written/structured (OGM Style) like this: -
CHAPTER01=00:00:00.000
CHAPTER01NAME=The Beginning
CHAPTER02=00:00:05.640
CHAPTER02NAME=Four Wise Men
CHAPTER03=00:00:09.040
CHAPTER03NAME=Obi-Wan and Anakin 01
CHAPTER04=00:00:12.880
CHAPTER04NAME=Yoda 01
CHAPTER05=00:00:14.440
CHAPTER05NAME=Obi-Wan and Anakin 02
CHAPTER06=00:00:17.360
CHAPTER06NAME=Mace Windu 01
CHAPTER07=00:00:18.400
CHAPTER07NAME=Anakin 01
CHAPTER08=00:00:20.960
CHAPTER08NAME=Mace Windu 02
CHAPTER09=00:00:26.640
CHAPTER09NAME=Anakin 02
CHAPTER10=00:00:31.920
CHAPTER10NAME=Mace Windu 03
CHAPTER11=00:00:34.600
CHAPTER11NAME=Yoda 02
CHAPTER12=00:00:41.040
CHAPTER12NAME=Obi-Wan and Anakin 03

I guess it's much easier to input this information into YAMB if you've "grabbed" it from somewhere.... It's more work if you're manually writing the chapters information though.

Great stuff though....

00:00:34.600 Yoda 02
00:00:41.040 Obi-Wan and Anakin 03

To this: -
CHAPTER01=00 The Begin
CHAPTER01NAME=our Wise Men
CHAPTER02=40 Obi-Wan a
CHAPTER02NAME=oda 01
CHAPTER03=40 Obi-Wan a
CHAPTER03NAME=ace Windu 01

CHAPTER04NAME=ace Windu 02
CHAPTER05=40 Anakin 02
CHAPTER05NAME=ace Windu 03
CHAPTER06=00 Yoda 02
CHAPTER06NAME=bi-Wan and Anakin 03

Why does it try and do this, I wonder?

there is a problem with chapterfiles looking the following:
