Yes exits some SW players (e.g. PowerDVD 15) that can reproduce 3D Bluray isos with PGS subtitles, etc. although some requirements still needed: Graphics card with HDMI 1.4 or better and Windows 8.1 or 10 (Windows 7 or lower cannot output 3D video trough HDMI) and of course 3D TV or monitor.
Other alternative are network media players as Mede8er (http://www.mede8er.com/mede8er_product_med600x3d.htm) can stream 3D isos from network shared folder.
Or recently LAV filers (https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases) is beginning to support MVC decoding but requires compatible player that also support 3D Blu-Ray (probably MPC-HC developer/nightly builds but I don't known current state).
Wow! That's a start! I was thinking about something like Plex that can easily manage all my media, but this is a helpful start!
I have been ripping my 3D BR's into a TAB format and play them via Plex on my Toshiba 3D TV, but that is not *FULL* 3D resolution from what I understand. Although, I do usually rip my disks to ISO as well, I'm not looking to get the full disk. I would like to find a way to rip just the main movie, but not lose any of the original quality.....but still play it like any other movie in my collection. Just pick the movie and hit play.
In the past I have done this sort of by using PowerDVD within Windows MCE even in Windows7. However, it was kind of wonky. What it basically did was put a PowerDVD menu item into WinMCE. I would have to mount the ISO prior to doing that then PowerDVD would play it as a physical BR. Not very automated and the interface didn't match the rest of WinMCE very well. Buggy as well.
I was hoping that in the couple years since I last did this, technology had caught up!
EDIT: in a quick Amazon search I found this which lists a bunch that claim to play 3D:

I use Plex for all of my side-by-side 3D content and it works beautifully. I need to switch my TV to 3D mode manually, but otherwise it looks gorgeous.

I use TAB mostly. I'm not sure if there is any functional difference. It just looks more symmetrical in my mind so I stick with it. lol
It does also look pretty good, but I understand it's NOT actually full resolution. It kind of muxes two, half-resolution frames together to make the 3D effect.
Know anything about that?

SBS Is better than TAB. It's a simple comparison - let's take full-HD material, which is 1920x1080.
If you go TAB, you're sacrificing vertical resolution. It will be halved to 540 pixels.
If you go SBS, you're sacrificing horizontal resolution. It will be halved to 960 pixels. But you keep the full vertical resolution of 1080 pixels!
With SBS, you're sacrificing less of the image. Especially so when the video is widescreen with bars above and under the video.

Version 2.5.5 (04/04/2016)
Fixed: conversions from MKV to MKV fails (only in version 2.5.4)
Improved: Bitrate calculation when m2ts/mpls durations mismatch (bad authored BDs)
Updated: Mkvmerge to version 9.0.1.
Updated: x264 encoder to version 148.2684.
Updated: x265 encoder to version 1.9.108.

Wildfire beat me to it. The pixel count is the same regardless of which one you choose, but things like stair-stepping on slanted surfaces will be practically unnoticeable with SBS whereas it will stand out a lot more with TAB, especially when watching it on a really big screen.

Yup. That's why I always encode to SBS instead of TAB. Always go for the best quality possible!

I have, by the way, never understood why TAB even exists. There's just no need for it, or am I missing something? :?

Interesting. I have used TAB because it just SEEMS better on a widescreen TV. SBS is just a long, narrow band of stuff. Yes, I know this is all in my head, but it just intuitively made sense. I did not know there were quality differences between TAB and SBS. I thought it was just a preference.
That being said, I DO in fact have a passive 3D TV. It is a 2012 vintage Toshiba. Are you saying that I am better off with the TAB format from a quality standpoint?

Really? I have used PowerDVD (not sure of version, but not new) to play 3D ISO's through a decade old laptop with Windows7 on it via HDMI. I am not an expert in this and I'm not going to say it was a pleasant experience, but I did this via WinMCE with the PowerDVD add-in. It was a clunky solution to begin with, but the WinMCE going away and PowerDVD not being used for anything useful EXCEPT for playing 3D, that's not a real solution, IMO. It's just one more step for a comprehensive home theater experience.

Do you know of ANY HTPC package (Plex/Kodi etc) that is looking to integrate this? Do you know of any forums that talk more about MVC software playing in general? I have Googled, but........Google.....
Thanks as always for the awesome insight!

Sure? :)
From Wikipedia:
HDMI 1.4 was released on May 28, 2009, and the first HDMI 1.4 products were available in the second half of 2009.[70][101] HDMI 1.4 increases the maximum resolution to 4K × 2K, i.e. 4096×2160 at 24 Hz (which is a resolution used with digital theaters) or 3840×2160 (Ultra HD) at 24 Hz/25 Hz/30 Hz; adds an HDMI Ethernet Channel (HEC), which allows for a 100 Mbit/s Ethernet connection between the two HDMI connected devices so they can share an Internet connection;[46] and introduces an audio return channel (ARC),[45] 3D Over HDMI,....

Sure? :)
Pretty sure........I haven't tried it in a couple years, but the same system is in place in my living room. What I recall was a wonky solution that would sometimes play in varying levels of 3D and sometimes not at all. I remember scouring forums back then trying to figure out of maybe my video drivers weren't the "proper" ones. In the end I did have the "best" drivers and never found a real solution. It could simply be that what I was trying to do wasn't meant to work, though

Okay, so here's a question for you and with VR and Google Cardboard becoming popular, this might be a cool feature to add.
I have instructions on my blog for people to use BDtoAVCHD as a part of converting 3D Blu-ray to something that can be viewed on Google Cardboard. Yes, it's more of a just-for-fun thing than being really practical, but it's definitely an alternative way to watch a 3D movie (or any movie really) in private without bothering anyone else or using up the family TV.
The problem is that in order to keep a full peripheral view, VR headsets use a lot of "overscan", which focuses primarily on the center area of the screen for each eye. That means that for movies a lot of the outside screen areas are out of sight. Is there a way to integrate a 3D function to reduce the left and right eye views separately to allow more of the screen? The results would be something like this:
http://widescreen.org/avengers_3D_small_vr.jpg
instead of the regular one:
http://widescreen.org/avengers_3D_small.jpg
I've been trying to figure out a similar way by running the SBS file through ffmpeg or something along those lines, but I've had no luck thus far. It would be great to have this option available in BDtoAVCHD if possible.

This seems more a matter of rendering (player time) that file format/encoding.
Have you ever thought Stereoscopic Player?

That a Windows player, though. I'm talking about encoding it in a way that the .mkv/.mp4 file can be moved over to Android or Apple devices as well, especially with Google Cardboard gaining more popularity and more devices like View Master's new 3D unit being advertised. Portable 3D files for VR/Cardboard would be great to have. And think about parents -- download and make a Google Cardboard unit, get an old phone, slap it in, keep the kids quiet on long trips with their own 3D movies. :)

@pistacho: I have ripped the movie Saw (region ABC) and tried to convert it to x265 .mkv file but it fails at some point, not sure where the log files are kept.
But if I use another program to do the same it converts it with no errors.
Have you or anyone that came across this issue have a solution for this?
Thanks in advance
cgp
EDIT: It seems to be doing it to every movie I rip, I have installed and uninstalled BDtoAVCHD a few times but still the same issue. Even with v2.5.4 which was fine before updating to version 2.5.5.
EDIT 2: OK, it seems that BDtoAVCHD has problems trying to convert Blu-ray's with mpeg video to x265 but it has no problems with converting them to x264.

Seems a problem with a decoder part. Since Intel Media SDK is used as a decoder/frameserver for x265, post info from Intel Media SDK System Analyzer tool.
On BDtoAVCHD menu opens Help > Intel Media SDK System Analyzer and copy text here.
Probably the issue is due an old Intel Graphics driver or dual graphics card configuration.

Ok. All is correct: Your system is not using Intel integrated graphics and decoding is in SW mode (libmfxsw32.dll).
Is not a drivers/HW issue. Seems a bug in libmfxsw32.dll when decoding mpeg2 stream. Also I reproduced the bug in my side using another system without intel HW acceleration.
I'll try to fix or workaround in the next BDtoAVCHD version.

How do I know I'm picking the correct title?

Hi robl45,
I've noticed a strange thing:
-[17/07/2016 - 15:15:28]--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LAST CMD LINE => "C:\Program Files (x86)\BDtoAVCHD\MVCenc.exe" "C:\Users\Rob\AppData\Local\Temp\BDtoAVCHD\JOHN CARTER (2012) 2D+3D.job_0.avc.h264" "C:\Users\Rob\AppData\Local\Temp\BDtoAVCHD\JOHN CARTER (2012) 2D+3D.job_0.mvc.h264" 189933 "C:\Users\Rob\AppData\Local\Temp\BDtoAVCHD\JOHN CARTER (2012) 2D+3D.job_0.264" 60000 4 60000 30000
EXIT CODE => -1073741510 (0xC000013A)

Why do you use a bit rate of 60,000 Kbps? It is greater than the bit rate of the source (makes no sense). If you select a BD-25 output size the program should calculate a bitrate between 25,000 to 30,000 Kbps. If you want maximum quality (60,000 Kbps) just do a BD-Remux without re-encode.
2nd Edit: I tried old version of BDtoAVCHD, still hung on hardware encoding. At this point I don't think its my system. Here it is working fine doing hardware encoding in staxrip.
staxrip can do MVC hardware encoding? I think not...
Tips:
1) try lower bitrate 25,000 - 30,000
2) do SW encoding and wait to finish (several hours)
3) if SW works OK and HW not the problem is (probably) in the drivers / HW configuration or Intel MSDK bug.
4) try another source: sometimes determined MSDK bugs affecting only determined sources or source can be corrupted.

I have not touched the bitrate, that is what the program generates when I select BD25. I've been trying to do BD9, and I've been flipping between the settings to try to make the hardware encoding work.
EDIT: In testing just now. It auto sets to 60000 bitrate. It also is saying in green below that it wants to use bitrate of like 300000. I set the bitrate to 25000 and then if I go and change the subtitle selection or the audio selection it sets it back to 60000. Also BD25 SW encode that finished this morning was 68GB.

No staxrip can do intel quicksync hw encoding. It appears to be something with the libmfxhw. I tried an older version of the drivers and it tried to do hardware 1.17 and hung. Latest drivers it hangs. Yet Staxrip uses those files fine so how can it be a driver issue? Is there something in the bios I need to change? This is a brand new build, built this past Friday. The software encode is done in an hour and I'll try another source, believe I did that already previously and report back. Are there any other logs I can provide?

How come when I open an mkv file from makemkv with the mvc file in it, BDtoAVCHD doesn't pickup the MVC part? I have to grab straight from the folder structure for it to see the mvc part.

Because BDtoAVCHD is Blu-Ray (2D/3D) to AVCHD/MKV conversion tool.
Not MKV to X.
As exeption MKV (2D) to AVCHD is supported also.

okay thanks, wasn't sure if it was a bug. any thoughts to how I can get mvcenc to work in hw mode?
EDIT: When doing 3d MVC, is there anyway to adjust the subtitles? When I did forced for John Carter, they are flat

pistacho,
Is that possible with your tool to
1. modify generated .avs script and then
2. relaunch x264 2-pass encoding only with modified script?

Yes for x264/x265 H-SBS/H-TAB conversions but robl45 wants MVC encode.
MVC encode not use x264 either .avs script, only MVCenc.exe

Subtitles in MVC are same as original Blu-Ray 3D PGS subtitles and depth are preserved (from version 2.4.0).
Version 2.4.0 (03/20/2015)
New: When source is a 3D Blu-Ray information is shown about 3D-planes assigned to each subtitles.
New: On conversions 3D Blu-Ray to BD-9/BD-25 2D+3D .ISO original subtitles depth are retained (subtitles 3D).
Improved: detection of correct playlist in some BD's with various similar or duplicated mpls.
Updated: MVC tools to Intel Media SDK 2015 Update 1.
Updated: eac3to to version 3.28.
Updated: Mkvmerge to version 7.7.0.
Updated: x264 encoder to version 146.2538.
Updated: x265 encoder to version 1.5.331.

Yes, I believe the issue is the player for the subtitles. When I play through Kodi I can adjust the subtitle depth. When I play through MPC-HC with madvr the subtitles are just flat.

I have been using this program for a long time. Works great!
Yesterday I started ripping a movie (Lorax 3D) to 3D-TAB, CRF18. This is the exact same way I have been ripping disks for a year or more.
Last night for some reason this one started out like they all do. I set it to go and went to bed. I woke up this morning and it is still sitting at:
[STEP 2/3 - X264 CRF] Recode video using x264, single-pass CRF..."
I mean it is at the beginning of this step. There is barely a yellow progress bar.
Normally the entire process takes MAYBE a couple hours. 8 hours is out of the question. I have no errors or anything. It's just sitting there like it's doing something, but it's not. The system is not locked up or anything.
They only thing that has changed is that I upgraded this system to Win10 yesterday. I don't know that it is related, but it is the only thing that has changed.
Is there something special you have to do to get this to work in Win10 that I didn't have to do in Win7?
Thank you!
