Hi selur,
I wouldn't call it a bug, but I think it's a situation hat Hybrid could manage. I'll explain.
I use as temporal path a folder that is not mounted as default.
If I try to run Hybrid without mounting the temp folder, Hybrid shows a message window saying something like 'Cannot append to DebugOutput.txt' and if you click on OK it keeps opening the message window again and again.
In this situation, an error from the user, I would expect a warn from Hybrid ('Could not find the destination path and Hybrid will close', or something) and then close, or set temp path to default and keep running, or opening Hybrid with Config tab selected and temp path with a red background...
Once again, thank you for this very helpful program.

fixed it locally, Hybrid will now simply disable the debug output after the first message.

Hybrid is returning vertically flipped video when the source uses Ut's (http://umezawa.dyndns.info/archive/utvideo/) RGB format.
These source are created by FlashBack Express's conversion from their screen capture format to AVI.
Can other people verify this behavior? Looking to verify if cause is inside Hybrid. All my systems have the same codecs/configuration so would be helpful to have some "outside" tests.

Does this change if you dis-/enable "Config->Input->Decoding->Flip raw rgb" ?
If you upload a small sample I can try to reproduce and fix it, I suspect that "Flip raw rgb" might either have to be changed into a 'Flip RGB' or it's accidentally not only checked for RAW input. :)

Hybrid won't take very short files. A 5-minute source is 7G! Screen captures were made at 8 fps but the AVIs created by FlashBack are 30 fps. Haven't found a free decoder for .fbr format. :(

Solved, thanks. "Flip raw rgb" was enabled by default. ut RGb is a form of raw RGB but it's not flipped so perhaps Hybrid should test for specific codec.

perhaps Hybrid should test for specific codec.
It would if I knew what to look for, which is why a sample would be useful. :)

As selur says, it isn't hard to setup.
Install all dependencies
Download and extract last version of Hybrid for your Linux architecture
In Config tag select Tools and verify/correct paths to needed tools

saving the defaults after changing tool paths is also a good idea :)
btw. if some one has the knowledge and motivation to setup a .deb package (with all the dependencies) for Hybrid I'll happily link to their site or host the .deb file on the official site, since I simply lack the knowledge about .deb files and I lack the motivation and time to read up on it. (same goes for other package systems)

Try clearing the Tools Cache (Config->Tools->Clear all cached tool infos), restart and try again
If that didn't help, go to Config->Tools->Tool Versions and post the info about the MP4box version. My guess is that there's some problem with Hybrid grabbing or analysing the version string.

Hi selur :)
I'm testing your last Hybrid 64bit 2014.02.14.1 version.
I lost some of my configuration on first start, mainly paths and tools paths.
I added them and saved GlobalDataModel.
But I then realized that a x264 profile I created was not selectable in the Configuration drop down menu in x264 tab. I changed default configuration and tried to save it. Hybrid opens a path: /home/me/.hybrid/.hybrid/profiles/video, that does not exist (there's no /.hybrid/.hybrid). My x264 profile is already at /home/me/.hybrid/profiles/video, but Hybrid looks for it in the wrong path.
I guess if this was also the problem with my default configuration.

i can't find hybrid in the menu
That is because Hybrid doesn't come with an installer and has some dependencies, read the linked 'Hybrid&dependencies for Ubuntu'-thread.
For example to be able to start Hybrid itself you need to have 'libqt4-core libqt4-gui libqt4-network libqt4-dbus libqt4-opengl' installed, then you should be able to double-click it (+ depending on your system you might have to mark it as an executable), if you want an entry in any menu you have to create it. Also on start-up Hybrid will probably complain about a lot of missing and required tools, to install these follow the instructions on the 'Hybrid&dependencies for Ubuntu'.
(most of the tools should be available through the package manager)
As a general note, since I wrote the 'Hybrid&dependencies for Ubuntu'-thread quite a while ago the ppa's I mentioned it it might not be up-to-date any more and the versions in the package manager might be newer.

The current and last two previous versions of Hybrid x64 Windows drop video frames on some S3 HD TiVo MPEG2 source files. The source play properly with common players.
Prefered MPEG Decoder (Config/Input tab) has been set as "no preference." Now it is set to FFMPEG12 and the checkbox for Prefer FFmpeg is enabled.
what are the performance differences between ffmpeg12 and mpeg12 decoders?
Which would Hybrid use as the default for 1080i HD MPEG2 source?
Is there a way to force Hybrid to use DirectShowSource (AviSynth) to decode the source video stream?

The current and last two previous versions of Hybrid x64 Windows drop video frames on some S3 HD TiVo MPEG2 source files.
never heard of "S3 HD TiVo MPEG2 source files." -> can you provide a small sample?
The source play properly with common players.
Strange if players like VLC, (S)MPlayer or MPC-HC can decode the content properly livav (and therefor mplayer/mencoder) should be able to decode it properly.
what are the performance differences between ffmpeg12 and mpeg12 decoders?
...
Which would Hybrid use as the default for 1080i HD MPEG2 source?
No clue, never checked it. By default (no preference) Hybrid let's mencoder decide which decoder to use. When a specific decoder is selected it enforces that decoder.
I added the option to enforce the mpeg-decoder, since:
a. mplayer/mencoder offers different options
b. I had a source, not sure which, where the default selection produced artifacts
c. I enforce ffmpeg12 for transportstream files since, a bunch of files in transportstreams crashed when mpeg12 decoder was used
Here's (roughly) how Hybrid decides on the decoder:
If prefer 'Prefer FFmpeg as decoder' is enabled FFmpeg get's used and the deocder choice doesn't matter since that option is ment for mencoder/mplayer.
If the source is inside a vob / DVD structure and Avisynth isn't used, mplayer/mencoder decides which decoder get's used
If the source is inside a transport stream container, Hybrid would use ffmpeg12 (unless decoding is done through Avisynth), otherwise it doesn't force a specific decoder an let's mencoder/mplayer decide.
If the source get's decoded through Avisynth:
- and the source is inside a mpeg/transportstream container and DGDecNV is present it get's used, otherwise DGMPGDec get's used
- and the source is inside a mp4 container and DGDevNV is present DGDecNV get's used, otherwise
- if "use L-Smash for mp4 input" is activated L-Smash get's used
- if 'LibavVideoSource instead of FFmpegSource' is selected, LibavVideoSource get's used otherwise FFvideoSource get's used
- and the source is inside a mkv container and DGDevNV is present DGDecNV get's used, otherwise
- if 'LibavVideoSource instead of FFmpegSource' is selected, LibavVideoSource get's used otherwise FFvideoSource get's used
- and the source is inside an av container and 'Prefer AviSource for avi input' and there is a vfw decoder present for the FOURCC of the content AviSource get's used, otherwise
- if 'LibavVideoSource instead of FFmpegSource' is selected, LibavVideoSource get's used otherwise FFvideoSource get's used
- and the source is inside some container I forgot and 'LibavVideoSource instead of FFmpegSource' is selected, LibavVideoSource get's used otherwise FFvideoSource get's used
Is there a way to force Hybrid to use DirectShowSource (AviSynth) to decode the source video stream?
Not atm. since DirectShowSource seemed to system dependent and I don't know of a (programmically) fast way to check whether there is a DirectShowFilter present which supports the content.
(never really cared about DirectShowSource)
-> If you can provide a sample of such content, which allows me to reproduce the problem, I can look into it.

Hi selur,
I have not worked a lot with Blu-ray sources lately. In my last encode I see a strange situation.
After finishing a x264 encode and viewing result I see some artefacts in the encode. I went back and previewed the same scene in Hybrid and I also see this same artefacts.
But when I play the original Blu-ray m2ts file in VLC, it plays smoothly, with no artefacts.
I put a capture to illustrate the problem. It is not exactly the same frame (I don't know how to get a capture with frame precision), but in original it was not there.
Original m2ts (VLC)

Encoded 264 (mplayer)
http://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=0B2vWFHTx0g4VVVBWQUVnNndWZkE
Is it a problem related to my mplayer/mencoder version?. I ask because mencoder is used to feed x264, isn't it?.
Is my system decoding badly the m2ts file?. Is it related to the ffmpeg version?

If either mencoder or ffmpeg is used depends on the settings and the input. -> check your job queue :)
An yes, different mencoder/mplayer/ffmpeg version can have an impact on the decoding (assuming you are not using Avisynth).
Just out of curiosity: Is the source interlaced VC-1 or interlaced AVC, both have are better decoded with more recent version.

The mencoder call:
"/usr/bin/mencoder" -lavdopts threads=4 -really-quiet -ofps 23.976 -of rawvideo -o - "/home/The_Island/BDMV/STREAM/00000.m2ts" -ovc raw -vfm ffmpeg

I run Hybrid interlacing check and it reports the source as being progressive.

finding more up to date ffmpeg and activating 'prefer ffmpeg as decoder' might be an easier solution ;)
digitall.h
2nd March 2014, 21:26
You're probably right.
I found a ppa from Jon Severinsson that is up to date.
But it says that
Please note that this is *actual* FFmpeg, from ffmpeg.org.
Recent Debian and Ubuntu packages feature Libav (from libav.org), a prominent FFmpeg fork, instead. You should be safe upgrading from Libav to FFmpeg, as the FFmpeg developers regularly pull from the Libav git tree, and thus have all Libav features, as well as several of their own.
However, both Libav and FFmpeg periodically break backward compatibility in order to more easily provide new features, so applications built against one version will not always work with the next...
I'm afraid it can break my system.
Anyway, I'm going to try to use the version of ffmpeg I have installed in my system as decoder, to see if it works better than mplayer/mencoder.
Just a doubt: if I select ffmpeg as decoder, when I hit preview, will ffmpeg be used for preview?, or just at encoding time?.
Hmmm, I ran a test and it seems that preview uses mplayer. So I don't really know if in preview is ffmpeg used...
On second thoughts, I read that ffmpeg is deprecated, and to be substituted by avconv... is that true?

On second thoughts, I read that ffmpeg is deprecated, and to be substituted by avconv... is that true?
ffmpeg is NOT deprecated. It's very actively maintained and developed. This is usual propaganda by Debian/Ubuntu packagers as they're on the side of libav instead of ffmpeg

Hi selur,
I compiled latest ffmpeg version, and configured Hybrid to use ffmpeg as decoder.
I created a job and started it.
But I think the code is the same:
"/usr/bin/mencoder" -lavdopts threads=4 -really-quiet -ofps 23.976 -of rawvideo -o - "/home/La isla/BDMV/STREAM/00000.m2ts" -ovc raw -vfm ffmpeg -noskip -vf scale,format=i420,crop=1920:800:0:140,scale,format=i420 -forcedsubsonly -nosub -nosound -mc 0 -vid 4113 -tsprobe 100000000 | "/home/x264-VLC/x264-r2389-956c8d8" --preset veryslow --tune film --profile high --level 4.1 --ref 4 --aq-mode 2 --vbv-maxrate 62500 --vbv-bufsize 78125 --qpfile "/media/INTERCAMBIO/TMP/Isla_00_35_04_1910_01.qp" --output-csp i420 --fps 24000/1001 --input-res 1920x800 --output "/media/INTERCAMBIO/TMP/Isla_00_35_04_1910_02.264" -
Wouldn't ffmpeg be used as decoder instead of mencoder?.
There's another strange thing. I managed to compile mplayer/mencoder and have the last SVN version, I confirmed running them in terminal.
Hybrid reports correctly mplayer version, but keeps reporting previous mencoder version, even after clearing cache tools info.

Series 3 High Definition TiVo DVR which saves in MPEG2 format. S4 and more recent save in MPEG4
If you can provide a sample of such content, which allows me to reproduce the problem, I can look into it.
This doesn't happen with all streams. The problem files are all at least 8G because they're 2 hours of HD. I'm not sure what causes the issue so can't create a sample. Posting an 8G file will be a challenge.
Hmmm...wonder if there's a problem with livav and large MPEG2 files. I'll load source and output streams into 2 instances of VirtualDub and compare frames after the 4G point.
Is there a frameserver which Hybrid will accept for input? Maybe that will work for the video input and the audio could be passed through. (I'm only encoding video, keeping source audio.)
Selur

Just for encoding. Preview is always done with mplayer (Avisynth inside the AvisynthPreview)
Hybrid reports correctly mplayer version, but keeps reporting previous mencoder version, even after clearing cache tools info.
If you clear the tool cache, Hybrid will run 'which' to find the tool, so if the new version isn't the first one listed Hybrid will not find it and you manually have to tell Hybrid where to find it.
Wouldn't ffmpeg be used as decoder instead of mencoder?.
Normally it should. -> a debuglevel 1 of the job creation should explain why mencoder is used and not ffmpeg.
-----
Is there a frameserver which Hybrid will accept for input? Maybe that will work for the video input and the audio could be passed through. (I'm only encoding video, keeping source audio.)
Nope and that is not planned, since the whole analysis of the file will probably fail with a frame server.
