MilOtis: do you know how to disable the "upgrade now" dialog? I've tried setting wmp to never check for updates, but that doesn't work. I've also tried hacking with the dlls, but nothing really came of that. Do you have any ideas? Or is it just a minor annoyance that I'll have to put up with every now and then?

Yes there is. . . .

1. Reboot Windows in SAFE Mode
2. Go to Program Files>Windows Media Player
3. Find setup_wm.exe
4. Rename it to anything else (e.g. setup_wm0.exe)
5. Reboot Windows

Works also by deleting setup_wm.exe, but renaming is better just in case you want o put it back. There may be other ways of avoiding the nag, but this one works for me.

Note: You have to be in SAFE Mode or else the Windows File Protection feature will put a new setup_wm.exe in the directory.

And di3111: I downloaded it, but it didn't seem to do much. I'm running 11.0.57, but I'll try it on a machine with 11.0.6 to see if that might be the issue. Before fairuse came out, I used drmdbg with mixed results. Hopefully someone can port it into fairuse, but I won't hold my breath.

Episodio1 (and I assume Ren as well): Earlier in the thread, there was talk of DRM removal in WMV files, but I haven't tested it myself. You should just need a valid (playable) license to unDRM it. Either that, or you can use the tools FU4WM is based on (like drmdbg, drm2wmv, etc.), which I know were designed to remove WMV DRM.

I have another question.

On another computer, I am able to right-click on a song and select convert. Then a Microsoft program would open, and I would be able to convert the wma file to an mp3.

I can't do it on a different computer. Why?

What do I need to do this?

You say it was a Microsoft program, and without further clarification, I'm going to assume you are talking about either Plus! Audio Converter, which came with the Plus! Digital Media pack for Windows XP or Windows Media Encoder.

To replicate this functionality on other computers, you can install either of the aforementioned Microsoft products (which I wouldn't recommend, having used both for audio conversion), or a number of inexpensive and/or free alternatives available (installing a LAME plugin to dbPowerAMP, for example). Basically what allows you to right-click a file and select it to convert is the result of allowing a process to add itself to the "shell", the user interface between you and the operating system. Any conversion software should have an option to allow itself to be added to the shell, and if not, there are several registry tweaks to facilitate this.

Please let me know if any of this was confusing or if you have any further questions.

Not confusing at all.

I forgot my original computer had the Media Center version of XP. I have other converters, it was just more convenient to highlight all my songs then right-click and select convert audio format.

As far as I'm concerned, hicux can take as long as he needs to make sure it works properly. I'd rather have a well-tested release that works on Vista (one of the only reasons I have for not updating yet) than one that doesn't work at all.

Though I do have a few feature requests:
1) Scrubbing of the unique content identifier. I don't like the thought of being tracked by my software.
2) Implementing FairUse Commander right into the shell (making it even easier to use than before)
3) Removal of Zune DRM (not likely, but just thought I'd throw it in)

4) An explanation of what they did to break the tool. I read over the way WMA DRM works, and I'd like to contribute to the project, but I'm wondering what exactly happened to make it stop working...

Of most concern should be number one on the wish list. A lot of users may not be aware of the 'unseen' information that is in the WMA tag. This information even transfers to ID3 tags with most converters and is not evident (seen by programs like Tag&Rename, dBPoweramp, MP3Tag, etc). It will track you as the downloader. All you can do now is strip the tag completely and recreate it with clean information.

This should not be a part of FairUse4WM itself, since it would firmly place it in the position of being a tool of piracy, instead of the legal grey area it currently inhabits. If information is needed to be stripped out of converted files it should be done by a third party tool, so that no blame attaches to FU4WM.

Agreed! I just wanted to give those mis-using FairUse4WM, either on 'rented' or purchased tracks (by sharing them), fair warning.

Danj: Perhaps you are right. I don't want to draw any more heat to FU4WM than it has already earned. I wouldn't share the files in the first place (and it's easy enough to do it manually or with a tagging tool), but I just really don't like the idea of a unique content tag.

I almost hate to correct it (because it seems most everyone here is using this to violate subscription agreements - ARGH)... but I can guarantee you that isn't a numeric used to track an individual buyer. Sorry, paranoid copyright violators... go be paranoid about something else.

Hey, I have a Zune, and use zune marketplace, which updates my IBX, but it's the only way to put songs on the zune. So is there a way to do a virtual machine and set that up with zune and use my main machine to run wmp 11 beta2 with fairuse? I don't have an xp disk, just the setup cd's that came with my computer, I'm on XP home. What program would I use, I tried the VM player that so miltois suggested, but I may be downloaded the wrong version because it asks for Vista. Any suggestions. I've been reading this thread since it was on page 28, but I can't figure this out

AFAIK, Zune doesn't itself update the IBX (it hasn't on any of the machines on which I've installed WMP first, and then Zune), but it does rely on the WMP Runtime, upon which both Zune and WMP are based.

What you can do is follow the rollback instructions (look earlier in the thread or pm me for a condensed version) and you should be fine. As I type this, I'm running both WMP and Zune, simultaneously downloading, unDRM'ing, and syncing to my baby, all on XP home. If you need help, just let me know, or if you're interested in pursuing the VM method, it should work for you (if not, there are plenty of alternatives available).


P.S. Sonicbox: Yes, I think that's what I'm talking about. I'm doing my best to stay true to the spirit (if not the word) of my agreement, and have and will purchase tracks to keep this wonderful service running. I have not passed around my unDRM'd music, I'm just concerned about the ramifications of someone else taking my music (http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=493).

Ok, I'm going through the rollback instructions, at what point do I install the Zune software, before I put back on WMP or after. I'm not sure what happened then because I installed Zune and now I can't unDRM anything, do you unDRM using files downloaded from WMP or Zune software? I'm using the instructions from Xarus's site. Derfnolsen: After you have installed WMP and confirmed that your unDRMing works, that's when it's safe to install Zune. I use URGE with great enthusiasm (I like it better than marketplace as well), but FU4WM can't yet unDRM Zune files (which are protected with "DRM 9.1" as MS calls it--supposedly just DRM 9 with a new trick).

Also, Xarus' site is slightly outdated. Instead of using Beta 2 like it tells you, you're much better off using the final version, 11.0.57 as it's stabler and faster. You can get it from MilOtis' April 29 fix or pm me and I'll send you the download link.

Also, if you disable the marketplace (http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/completed/4828-drastically-increase-zune-program-performance.html#post37096) in Zune, the program will run MUCH faster. (At the expense of some minor sync issues... Leesmann and I have been trying to work on it, but the solution seems to be just to switch it back on (http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/completed/5444-zune-marketplace-alternator.html) when you're syncing).

What is fairuse4wm commander?

Ever since I installed the Zune software, my FairUse is not working. I tried a few steps to fix it, like uninstall Zune and roll back WMP, but nothing seams to work. Any help would be apprieaciated, thanks.

Sincere303: FU4WM Commander is an external program that pretty much automates everything FU4WM can do. If you specify the location of your FU4WM executable and the folder your music downloads to, it will automatically search for all DRM'd tracks, and only return those inflicted with DRM. It then batch processes this list in FU4WM, deletes the original (or saves it if you so choose), and removes the annoying "[No-DRM]" tag FU4WM places at the front of the unDRM'd file. Basically, it's automation now more automatic.

As for Zune: assuming you're running XP, just uninstall the Zune software and the WMF runtime from Add/Remove programs (you might have to click the "show program updates" checkbox in the upper-right corner of A/R). Next, roll back your WMP installation (also from A/R), restart your computer, and open up an explorer window. Go to Tools | Folder Options and click the View tab. Scroll to the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" radio dialog (it should be the first of its kind) and select to show the files. Scroll down just a bit to find "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" and uncheck it, and confirm that this is what you want to do when the dialog pops up. Click apply and close the box. Now navigate to %AllUsersProfile%/DRM (the default location; if you can't find it, your location is stored in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DRM) and delete everything in the folder, but don't delete the folder itself.

You can now install WMP11. If you have a copy of the installer for 11.0.57 or earlier, you're fine (don't use 11.0.6 or later!). If you don't, just pm me for the download link. When it's finished installing, you might want to restart, or you might not, depending. Open up IE (it won't work in any other browser) and head to http://services.wmdrm.windowsmedia.com/indivSite/en/indivit.asp

Click the upgrade button. If it's grayed out, it's because you're not using IE. Do it.

Do a test run to make sure you can still unDRM using your favorite P4S downloading service. If successful, you can install Zune, which shouldn't modify any of your DRM settings.

The most important thing is that you don't allow Windows Media Player to update. Security component updates (despite how scary they look) are actually fine to install, as should be any update to your music store. Also, don't install Update 929399 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929399), as it will update your ibx as well.

i dont get this drmdbg thing...when i use it by itself, or with automate undrm 2.0 (replacing the old drmdbg) it just opens windows media player...waits like 20 seconds, then gives some error about setup_wm.exe not working

i've tried using it as a command line tool also, but when i type "drmdbg /?" at the prompt, to see all it can do, it doesn't give me any text, just opens WMP and then gives me the setup_wm.exe error

how do i use this until fairuse4wm 1.4 is released?

To use the drmdbg.exe until FairUse 1.4, you simply run the program and when WMP opens, add a DRM-protected file to the playlist and tell WMP to start playing. A dialog will pop-up with the KID for the SID, and the KID will also be saved to the key file needed to run DRM2WMV. It works for me with Vista and WMP 10, with an 11.0.6000.6324 blackbox.

Zune DRM? Well, it's not so much that I'm against it as that I'm surprised anyone actually cares about the Zune. It's done so badly that they didn't even bother releasing it over here in Europe (they're allegedly planning a 2008 launch but my guess is it will just fizzle out and they just won't bother). There are many better players on the market these days.

GuyPaddock: It doesn't work for me under XP SP2 running 11.0.57 (a.k.a. runs FU4WM). It will launch WMP (or maximize it if it's already open) and doesn't really do anything. Anything I'm missing? Do I need to be using 11.0.6?

Hi all I'm new here and would like to know is it true that I have to play the downloaded song at least once to obtain the DRM code? The WMA titles that I have downloaded required to be played on WMP 11, then there's no way I could ever use Fairuse 1.3 to strip DRM since I must upgrade to WMP11 to have the song played and I now get the "XXX.wma requires a different private key" and "IBX Version 11.0.6000.6324 isn't supported yet." errors.

Im currently trying to get rid of drm from some files, and I have get hold of Fairuse4wm, and when its first run it want to recover keys (whatever that means).

It says "no keys loaded, and when I click "recover keys" it gives me this message "IBX component does not appear to be present".

when I pres "OK" another windows appear, called "extract DRMv1 keys" with some mublejumble telling me i have "Drmclien.dll version 9.0.0.3250" !?

So can someone please tell me what I have to do, to make this thing work ?

Does anyone know how to get around this error message: "UNABLE TO DECRYPT: Packet truncated, 25467 needed, 2683 remains, at offset 13317."
I downloaded it last month, never had time to watch it. License expired, so logged in & got another license for it. The file now plays fine on WMP but when I use FU4WM on it, the error message above appears!

This drmdbg received and united a lot of valuable advice from Mr. taku. Therefore, it opens it to the public as drmdbg of the taku & inoyan version.

It opens it to the public for the time being though the possibility
to be planned easily is large because the confirmation is taken only with IndivBox.key v11.0.6000.6324.


System requirements

1.Win2000,XP?VISTA uncorresponds.
2.Wmp v8 or more(This : because it is the ..can confirmation here.. oldest. )
3.Less than IndivBox.key v10.00.00.3802 or v11.0.6000.6324
4.Only wmp v10.00.00.3650 corresponds when the target is DRM1.


How to use.

1.Drmdbg start
2.Selection -> reproduction of DRM assistant's animation because of start of wmp. Or, it reproduces from "URL is opened".
3.When the console window (DOS screen) is made the foremost side, and KID becomes appropriate. Some keys are pushed. If it is necessary to select this because KID exists also in CM etc.
4.The message box is displayed, and KID and SID are forwarded to the clipboard. In addition, drm1\drm1-i.key or drm2\drm2-i.key is made on desktop.

- Drmdbg.ini is not used in this taku & inoyan version.

Please inform me if trouble etc. are found.

FairUse4WM does not work with the final version of wmp 11, only previous versions. You have to role back wmp 11 to wmp 10.
