i tried doing the fix, but i cannot find the DRM folder located at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users. i made sure that all hidden files and folders are showing (as i can see Application Data, etc.), but i can't seem to find a DRM folder. how do i locate this folder so that i can do the rollback?

Not only hidden files, but also "Hide protected operating system files" needs to be unchecked.

Well, when I want to acquire DRM license today, WMP ask me to security upgrade before I can play it. I still haven't done it and wonder will it install the new IBX that can't be handle by FU4WM. I am using WMP10.

I tried playing napster files in my wmp9 which had my older ibx files but they wouldnt. I updated to official ms wmp11 then they would play but no fly on the fairuse4wm. Uninstalled and still no go. Tried installing the 11.0.5705.5043 beta from the net and that didnt help. Tried re-individualizing when I rolled back to v9, as well aswith the beta. Still keeping same version. Tried wiping out DRM folder...
I also still have a copy of my drm folder from before I even started this... V 10.0.0.3930 - but if I revert to it I still cant play any newer files downloaded from napster....

Hi all, I just wanted to come back and chime again as to how I got my fix to work.

Knowing that if you have a final version of WMP11, and trying to downgrade in whatever means is just not worth it. I never had a chance to look at Milotos instructions as to how he did it. I mean I would, but doing so at work prevents me to anyway. :p But from what I gather, if you have final wmp11 installed, you do some kind of rollback install and it magically solves your problems?

I don't know if that is true or not, but I do know this. If you have an older version of WMP, say WMP9, then upgrade to WMP11 beta 2. From there, I install and run the urge installer. The IBX version which is then installed is compatible with FUWM1.3fix. I just log into my account, download a few songs, and convert them for archival use without any problems.

If you have the final version installed already, then you are out of luck, unless you want to:
a) run a virtual machine with WMP11 beta 2 inside
or
b) reinstall the OS and upgrade to WMP11 beta 2.

If there are other surefire methods, post here.

As far as Vista goes, same idea. You got WMP11 final installed there, and I doubt it if you can go back to an older version of WMP11. Therefore, you got to run a virtual machine, which might be excessive, but it works. If there are better ways, let me know.

I could kiss you man, that fix worked. I installed xp sp2 with wmp9 fresh on one of my other partitions and followed the instructions TO THE TEETH. Sure enough as of right now it worked 100% perfectly :-)

Looks like all you get in the zip file is the contents of an installed 11.0.5705.5043 wmp and windows media connect 2 folder... works though :-)

For those who may not get the file before its taken down this is whats in instructions.txt:

OK...do not whine when this doesn't work for you, because if it doesn't then you did NOT follow the instructions word for word, letter by letter.

You MUST do these steps in the order they are in, or you will still not have the right IBX version and thus will never get fairuse4wm to work. Do not make assumptions on what you think you are supposed to do, just follow the numbers below to the letter and you will not have any problems.

NOTE: All programs MUST be closed, and no music/audio services or media applications can be open. Make sure you are at your windows desktop, with nothing running in the background, then proceed...

1. Click your "Start" menu, then "Run..."

2. At the 'Open:' prompt, type "services.msc" and click "OK"

3. Scroll down until you see the "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" and double click on it

4. At the bottom, click "Stop"

5. Change the 'Startup type:' to "Disabled", then click "Apply", then "OK"

6. Now go to the following directory...
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\DRM\

7. Delete everything in that 'DRM' folder. If you do not see any files, then see the note at the bottom of these instructions on how to show all files. After you have done this close the DRM folder.

8. Now, from this release, right click on the included "Program Files" folder and click "copy"

9. Open up "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer" and right click on your "C" drive, then click Paste
(select "Yes to all" when prompted to overwrite)

10. Close all open windows, programs, etc, then open this website:

11. Click "Upgrade" and "OK" or whatever pops up to complete the individualization/IBX process. (This is re-individualizing your computer which downloads a new indivbox.key file, based on your version of Windows Media Player. Since we downgraded WMP in Step 9, your new IBX version will be based on an older/downgraded version or WMP which is compatible with Fairuse4WM 1.3fix)

12. Now, if you use URGE, go to urge.com and download the latest URGE addin for WMP, sign into Urge after completed, and you can download and convert all you want now. If you use Naspter, Rhapsody, or some other service, don't do any upgrades, just download and convert. This will work with downloads from here forward, not older downloaded DRM music files.

Well, I can report that I use my other computer with WMP9 and accept the security upgrade (yesterday). FU4WM 1.3 still work with some error message. But, I have not tried it with WMP10/11. Good luck!

Well, milOtis if you want to play the media and WMP stop, when you in the processs of acquiring DRM, and ask you to upgrade security before you even be able to play (get the license) it.
If that is not a 'force' update then I don't know what is. Of course you can click no but you won't be able to play/unDRM it since the license has not been given at that point.
I decline to upgrade in my main machine with WMP10 but on the other I have WMP9 and accept upgrade. FU4WMP can still work OK with some error message (just ignore it).

so DUH, if you are hoping this FIX will make old files work then you are out of luck. this is only for files that you download after you do the fix.

Jeez, people, this is not a hard concept, and many have gotten it to work just fine. You will NEVER have any forced updates since all your new downloads will be based on the downgraded IBX version, AS EXPLAINED IN THAT FIX!

Since it doesn't work on old files, just redownload any old files you might have. I use URGE, and since they charge a flat $10/month fee whether you download 10 songs, or 1,000,000 songs then redownloading isn't a problem.

If you use a crappy media service that charges you PER FILE, then that's your fault.

melOtis - Perhaps others that cannot make your fix work have a point and are not as ignorant as your posts imply. I will repeat again, if one has a stock (i.e. unomidified) XP install and follows your instructions 8 and 9 (in the 'fix' instructions file for replacing the Windows Media Player directories) the replaced files that are 'protected' by Windows WFP system will inmediately be set back to their original versions. All the WMP .exe and .dll files are protected!

If anyone dis-beleves this, check the version of wmplayer.exe in your C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\ directory before and after the replacement instructions referenced above. For example, WMP 11 Beta 2 is version 11.0.5705.5043, which is what is included in the melOtis 'fix' zipfile. If you have a different version to start with, say WMP 11 Final version 11.0.5721.5145, and do the replace it will revert back to what you had to begin with. So melOtis, there is some yet unexplained peculiarity of you XP set up that is allowing this to work for you. So do not get on everyone's case that is frustrated with your instructions as there is a possibility they may be performing them line-by-line, word-by-word and yet not getting your same results.

In any event, it is just a matter of time before a forced DRM update is forced on you to shut it all down. Just as well, because large masses of free riders (abuse of Fair Use rights)just increase the cost to those who use it properly.

windows file protection protects dll's and exe's in the system folders under the WINDOWS directory and in the root drive.

this fix replaces files in the program files directory, and files do not get revered, on xp, xpsp1, or xpsp2. obviously you haven't tried it yet though to fin dout.

windows file protection does not monitor program files, only system files. this even applies to microsoft programs like WMP

Sorry Bud, you better read up. ALL SYS, DLL, EXE, and OCX files that ship on the Windows XP CD are protected. Even True Type fonts are protected. They are all "backed up" to a special folder called dllcache. The location of this file is:

C:\system32\dllcache [edit: setarip_old is right in his post below, of course. It is %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\dllcache and in most installations %SYSTEMROOT% is C:\Windows. My Bad]

then why haven't the 6 computers i have run this fix on, over a two weeks ago shown any change since i downgraded? fairusewm still works on all of them...2 are running xp with sp1, three are running xp sp2, and one is running xp with no service packs installed.

the people that are saying the files will be replaced by windows protection obviously haven't tried the fix, because they don't get replaced. sorry. your theory of file-replacement sounded good on paper, but doesn't actually happen with the (11-27/12-09) fix - fairuse4wm still works buddy.

BTW, anyone got this fix and FU4WM 1.3fix? I only got the 1.3. All download related to DRM and FU4WM have been deleted fast by file sharing server.

Follow on report, I download another DRM file since FU4WM seems still working. After finished d/l then I use FU4WM but it gives error (forgot to note what is the error) and refuse to un-DRM. I reboot and try again this time work flawlessly without any error.

Have no clue what happen here so I am still buying DRM file until FU4WM stop working.

There is one little problem that I have already encountered, and I'm not sure if it is possible to work around it. Whenever someone installs the Microsoft Zune software, it automatically upgrades the version to the latest version. Is there anyway to work around this? It requires that the software be installed in order to obtain the licenses.

Also, when I am going through the instructions, I don't have "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" which milOtis referred to in step 3.

I just found the free converter: "Free wma to mp3 converter 2", but could there be any quality issue with the conversion with these converters, assuming a constant sampling rate of 192kb/s?
Is there any reason to pay for a converter because it's giving a better quality conversion at at the same sampling rate? If you think so, then is there any audiofile site which rates these converters for quality. (my current headphones are not the best to test with, and I want great quality for future use on better equipment...)

I'm not using i-Tunes. I think its rediculous to buy limited-use music, and when I had the app loaded, it seemed bloaty and spy-like, so I took it off.
I prefer MusicMatch for playing stuff.
But I didnt know i-tunes had a converter. At this point, doubt it's worth the install, unless someone knows why one converter is better than another...

Hmm... I haven't noticed that. I've used Zune and WMP 11 on three computers without incident.

Computer 1: WMP Beta 1 --> Beta 2 --> Final, and installed Zune via download (before I installed WMP final)

Computer 2: Beta 2 --> Final, Zune via download

Computer 3: Beta 1 --> Final, Zune via CD.


It should be noted that computers one and three no longer work with FU4WM, but played fine together before I stupidly allowed them to update. I dunno if something happened on your computer, but I had no prompt to update WMP while installing Zune.

Hi - am a newbie to the forums and definitely not a computer expert so would like to thank Viodentia firstly for an excellent program - its very annoying when you buy music/video and aren't allowed to do what you want with it!

Secondly just to note that I tried MilOtis' rollback fix and whilst using those instructions didn't work for me (yes I did follow to the letter but somehow still had WMP11 and the same old IBX number at the end!) - I kind of adapted it and did it this way:

Used the Windows Rollback from WMP11 to WMP10, then also rolled back WMP11 Runtime.

Then I deleted the stuff in the DRM folder and upgraded through the microsoft site. hurrah! I got the older IBX. Can now use FairUse4WM again. Only prob I have is that some of the licences I used have gone and the provider says I have used too many times and has "expired" even tho I have "backedup" my licences (as an aside - anyone know how to fix this/get the licences to work again from backup?).

However, this doesn't really bother me as I'd already used FU4WM on them and backed up onto DVD.

So thanks everyone for input and I hope some of those stuck with WMP11 can use the above info.

Shame that the original programmer got slapped with that suit from Microsoft - no wonder he went into hiding, but thank you anyway - I wish I was as clever as that. :D

I did say this instruction needed a warning, but it seems like people didn't read my post. It doesn't matter if you back up the files or the licenses or whatever, if you delete the contents of the DRM folder, your existing licenses are trashed forever. If you try and back up the drmstore.hds or other files from the DRM folder, then restore them afterwards, even if you didn't do anything else, you will get a "secure storage error" which will prevent you from using your existing files. The only way you can get them back is if your provider is willing to allow reissuing the licenses.

I made some improvements to UserMan's source code for his C# app. Mainly it will save your path settings, it will batch up calls to FairUse so it will call it 1 time for X files (in some cases it may have to make multiple calls to FairUse), allows you to specify a seperate output path, allows you to delete the original files (assuming you use the seperate output path), and has the option to keep or remove the NoDRM prefix.

Use at your own risk, if you find any issues (I'm sure there are some) post repro steps and if I get time I will try and fix them. Thanks again to UserMan for his source code, I would have never gotten around to doing this if it wasn't for his code to get it started.

they didn't need to read your post, the warning was and is already included in the ZIP file download in the instructions for the rollback fix, so i don't know why you'd need to warn everyone, the warning was already included in the info file.

i personally use audiograbber with the lame_enc.dll file to encode. it is fast and free, and takes up like 1 or 2mb total in your program files. i do use iTunes to listen to music though since it has a much better quality equilizer when using high-end speakers or headphones.

It should do this by default as it certainly works on my machine. The settings are saved in a XML file that should be stored in your Application Data path.

On you machine you should have a folder something like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\<insert your login>\Local Settings\Application Data\WMFMetadataReader\FairUseCommander.exe_Url_<insert guid here>\2.0.0.0

with a user.config file in it. This is a XML file where your settings are being saved. Do you have this file? Does it update when you make changes?

Newsflash...anything downloaded from URGE (the original downloaded files) still work after your stop paying for the subscription, so if that isn't "owning" then i don't know what is. this is what sets URGE apart from iTunes, Rhapsody, etc...you own anything downloaded, even when the subscription ends, cause the DRM files still plays w/o an active subscription.

As I read it, the All Access plan is clearly a limited licence to play and only while you keep paying.

yes I did in fact read your warning (and saw it in the instructions) - I actually read almost every one of these pages/posts whilst trying to find a way to get back to using Fairuse4WM) and I did expect that to happen, but I just wondered about getting them back from backups, so thanks for the rest of the info in your post - luckily I have backed up the files to DVD anyway but I take on board all your advice re the licences.

using fairuse4wm v1.3fix gives me error,

G:\Music\music\Discography\album1\01.wma UNABLE TO DECRYPT: Error opening "G:\Music\music\Discography\album1\01.wma" for reading.


and in
fairusecommander i get
ERROR: Exception from HRESULT: 0xC00D07F0 G:\Music\music\Discography\album1\01.wma


any ideas?

1) It may be a corrupted file.
2) If you had to downgrade to WMP 11 Beta, make sure you play the file again in WMP as it may need to download the license again.

anyone know if its possible to remove WMDRM-PD (janus) off encrypted wmv files? FU4WM doesn't work with WMDRM-PD, but i was wondering if there are any other versions of it that work with PD DRM...

hey man first of kudos for everything you've done in the thread so far and stuff, great work

just reading your instructions it says to copy your program files and past them in to my c:\,

wont this erase all my install program files? and replace them with just these 2 folders? just weery about doing that that's all man.
