I bought (not rented) some movielink movies and am having difficulties converting them to a different format. The reason I want to convert them is that my portable media player (Cowon A2) has some difficulty playing the videos, even though they're DRM free, thanks to FairUse4WM. I would like to convert them to xvid/divx format. Any suggestions (besides tunebite)?

I convert my own movies to divx/xvid all the time, I'm glad you asked. Check out AutoGK or Dr Divx 2 OSS beta 2. Both are stellar programs.

@Negi: Are you saying that if you use an older version of WMP11 and not the final version, your IBX file is automatically updated to the latest and greatest version? So its forced upon you, is that what you are saying?

i just did it again this morning on a computer here at the office. still working because if you do the downgrade first, when you individualize, it sends you the IBX for whatever version of WMP you have...that's why this fix will always work as long as you don't reupdate WMP

it only downloads the IBX that corresponds to your WMP version, so if you keep the old WMPbeta2 installed (in that zip file) then your IBX stays old as well, that's how IBX works, it's directly tied to your WMP version...you can't have an old WMP and a newer IBX.

P.S. - there are no "forced" updates after you downgrade as long as you keep clicking "no" when it asks if you want to update. it will still let you use WMP even when you click "no" so it isn't forced

Now I haven't had the opportunity to read the instructions yet that I assume are in the rapidshare zip file, but I just want to point out that individualizing your computer for DRM is not necessary, but it depends on your situation.

Reason I say this is because I have had multiple computers where I installed wmp11 beta 2 and urge straight from an older copy of WMP. Downloaded a few sample songs, and verified that fairuse4wm can convert them.

No need to manually go to microsoft and invididualize my machine. However, it could be possible that WMP is doing it in the background at some point without my knowing and individualizing my machine for me automatically. Just thought I'd point that out.

yes, it individualizes when you download a song again, but for those having newer IBX problems they have to follow the instructions in that ZIP file to get it to work for them.

Actually, neither of these programs work for MovieLink files. The only program I could get to convert the files properly was MediaCoder, which is available here: http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/

I figured I'd post this in case someone else is looking for a way to convert MovieLink files after DRM has been removed thanks for FairUse4WM!

for conversion, after DRM is removed this is what i reccomend:

For AUDIO: (Free Programs will do)
- iTunes works great for converting WMA to MP3 once you change the settings in iTunes to 192K MP3 joinst stereo, and uncheck both boxes "smart" and "filter"

- Audiograbber has a free build in lame encoder, with quality vs speed settings, set to high, and use the free downloadble lame_enc.dll for encoding.

For VIDEO: (Paid program)
- Canopus ProCoder v2 is the only video conversion program I will reccomend. I would rather have quality and the options Canopus offers rather than a free program with no filters, or udio/video fade in or scene cut options.

P.S. - If you are using fairuse4wm, your obviously not the most ethical person in the bunch, so getting Canopus ProCoder from torrentspy.com or torrentreactor.net probably wouldn't bother ya.

well, it's a different world over here in the USA. Under the Millenium Act, the punishment for removing copy protection (per song!) is $25,000 + jail time. For downloading software you do not own, it's a slap on the wrist, second offense is somewhere near the $5,000 range

we speak from experience and our different perspetives, and it doesn't mean one person is wrong and the other is right...different environments create different people, with vastly different laws apparently too.

Yeah, I'm sure if you had a bounty on your head from a multi-billion dollar software company known for its unlawful business practices you'd give them your home address (not to mention the MPAA's backing). As unfortunate as it is that neither he nor monkeyboy have come back to update us, I don't really blame them, both for the issue I just mentioned, plus it's gotta be a bitch to keep the thing updated... a cat-and-mouse game with Microsoft when you're only one man is next to impossible. It's just like almost every other DRM-removal scheme before it, as it eventually breaks. We got our couple months worth, and now it's broken.

If you want to develop an alternative, I'll be behind you 100%.

I'm currently running version 10.00.00.4040 and I can't seem to get FairUse4WM to work. (And yes, they're files I already have licenses for, but I can always get the licenses again, so clearing them isn't an issue, if I have to.)

When I hit "recover keys" it says "IBX components do not appear to be present." Then it says "Attempting to recover DRMv1 keys..." and "DrmClien.dll has version 10.0.0.3802" I hit OK but then it doesn't let me move onto "Next."

I've tried loading a video from ezdrm.com but it just gets authorized right away and starts playing, no DRMv2 downloading or individualization going on.

What do I do?

The only thing I can think of that you can try is reindividualizing your Windows Media Player (http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp) (needs to be done in IE if you are a Firefox or Opera user). Unfortunately that could well result in your getting the unsupported IBX version, but since you're currently unable to unDRM things anyway, that wouldn't change much, and you might get lucky and get an older version as some other people seem to have done when they use an older media player version.

Also if you wanted, you could try updating your WMP player to beta 2 and get those IBX versions and see if you can get your fairuse program to work. It's worth a shot.

sry i haven't read the board rules yet , but i have a lil question about it. unfortunately i'm not familiar with coding an patchprograming. but is there a possibility for anyone of you to write a patch that makes FairUse4WM do this:
- batch"encode" including subdirectorys
- working directory fixed to <Use the Same directory>
- after "encoding" delete original files and finaly
- Cut the fist 8 digits of the file names ( [NoDRM]- )

??

Hi schakusch, what you ask for could be do-able, but I think that is too much work for any one of us to brush up on our programming skills and perform such a task (I could be wrong. :P).

Anyway, in the fairuse program, you can't batch encode, but what I do is add all the music files in the program, have it output the final music files in the same directory. After that, I'd have to go into each folder and delete the original files.

Then if you really want to remove the first 8 digits, use a freeware program called Bulk Rename. It can do that easily.

I realize that is a lot of steps and a hassle, but it gets the job done when no one else will do the job for you. :)

i mean 2 or 3 subdirectories are possible and easy to manage manually (with max 50 files) but if there are 40 50 u really drive mad : P

By-the-way, I would have posted this last week, except the 5 day 'cool your heels after joining' period by this board would not let me until now.

The "fix" you have discussed (that is, extracting and hence overwriting the final WMP 11 program directories with what appear to be the WMP 11 Beta 2 program files - a short cut to reinstalling/replacing WMP with the Beta 2 version), while I have not tried it would seem not to work (so I have to agree with rdn98). Here is why:

Windows XP has as one of its features a Windows File Protection system (see WFP at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/222193). This feature prevents the deletion or replacement of protected system files. In essence, it detects changes and replaces back the original protected files. The Windows Media Player core files are some of the protected files. As soon as your fix overwrites the WMP files, they are replaced with those original ones in the system32>dllcache directory. If you want to see how this works, just delete the wmplayer.exe file in the WMP program files directory and watch it magically reappear. As a matter of fact, delete the whole Windows Media Player directory and you will see all the protected files reappear. Then execute WMP and watch it work normally (some of the personal settings files are not protected and you will lose those).

So something else is going on or that you are doing that is making it work for you. Have you disabled the WFP feature or are you using a stripped down version of XP that may have had this feature removed?

rdn98 reported that when he reinstalled/replaced WMP with the Beta 2 version it worked. Believing this to be true, then your XP must have WFP disabled. Could you check and tell us? Perhaps this is why others like rdn98 have had problems getting the results with your fix as you did.

Sounds like you just changed the SFCDisable registry entry to a value of 1 or 2. UNLESS you had an external kernel debugger hooked up to your PC those options do not work (on purpose, to keep developers and us from defeating the SFC). If a kernel debugger is not hooked up through a null modem, Windows File Protection is not disabled.

So you really did nothing, you think you replaced the files but WFP put them back! To defeat the WFP system you have to get the SFC_OS.dll from an SP1 XP and modify it as in the document linked in my previous post, replace it for your SP2 SFC_OS.dll and then change SPCDisable value to 0xffffff9d.

The only other way replacing the files MAY work is by deleting every WMP file from the dllcache directory (so the protected versions are not available for the replacement), you will have to do a lot of comparing between the dllcache and the WMP program directories to figure which ones need deleting. Then doing the replace as suggested by MelOtis and clicking IGNORE when Windows asks for the installation diskette.

On this last method, BACKUP your system first!

Fairuse4wm still works for me without any problems. I just used it with soem napster tracks and it still works. I don't use it though since i already subscribe to napster-to-go. I can imagine the number of peopel signing up for free trials then downloading as much music as they can then cancelling.

Not sure how you are using the program, but for me, it seems that if I drop a large parent directory, I get all the files in every subdirectory converted. Using the "same directory" option the files are created in the same directory.

There are tools, both the javascript posted earlier and windowed rename&erase tools that can fix the "[NODRM]" filenames.

Without source code, it's improbable that someone would be able to patch the functionality to do this automatically.

I made some improvements to UserMan's source code for his C# app. Mainly it will save your path settings, it will batch up calls to FairUse so it will call it 1 time for X files (in some cases it may have to make multiple calls to FairUse), allows you to specify a seperate output path, allows you to delete the original files (assuming you use the seperate output path), and has the option to keep or remove the NoDRM prefix.

Use at your own risk, if you find any issues (I'm sure there are some) post repro steps and if I get time I will try and fix them. Thanks again to UserMan for his source code, I would have never gotten around to doing this if it wasn't for his code to get it started.

i tried doing the fix, but i cannot find the DRM folder located at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users. i made sure that all hidden files and folders are showing (as i can see Application Data, etc.), but i can't seem to find a DRM folder. how do i locate this folder so that i can do the rollback?
