View Full Version : FairUse4WM - a WM/DRM removal program

You're good.... That's exactly what I am doing. I am using the Imtoo WMA MP3 converter. Do you know of any other program that will do the conversion AND take the proprietary tags into the MP3 ID3 tags??
Many thanks again.
I personally don't, but I asked around and apparently iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/) and Foobar (http://www.foobar2000.org/) can both do this.

Yes, I think foobar does it too in terms of id3 tags. I've done conversions from WMA to mp3 using foobar and it is pretty quick.
Hey, where did you get your DRM files from so that your files can be successfully stripped and mine can't? I get that dang IBX error :).

The tip to avoid the IBX error is to not allow your music downloading program to update. FU4WM can't deal with newer IBX, and therefore cannot convert files on a machine that uses the newer version. Even transferring DRM'd files from the newer machine to the older doesn't work to play the way it does for the other way around. Basically, if you have the option to use a machine that hasn't updated yet, do so, as there is no way that I know of that to downgrade IBX (if someone knows something, it'd be incredibly useful...)

You can also use dbPowerAMP, which I find works wonders (download a LAME encoder to convert to mp3). dbPowerAMP is incredible for preserving ID3 tags and generally messing around with formats within an environment.

I can use Fairuse4wm to remove DRM on Rhapsody files but when I try to use it on Yahoo Music Unlimited files, I get a 'You do not appear to be the owner of this license" or something like that.
Why would one work but not the other?

Version 1.3 shouldn't have this problem, but .. There's a few things you can do.
A future version of FairUse4WM will verify the content key better. It's likely that you are running into a case where a provider reuses the same KID multiple times -- but with a different content key each time! Try running this while prompting for a license, that may help get the "correct" content key.
If that doesn't help, plese send a PM with more details
I'm having the same problem with the "you don't appear to be the owner" warning. Runinning fairuse4wm 1.3. Every file downloaded from Rhaspsody works fine. It's just the files I download from Yahoo Music that get this error. I bought one file from Yahoo and used it to recover a key (so it says I have 2 keys). Didn't help. I downloaded a Yahoo file to my library, didn't play it, changed the option in Windows Media Player to NOT automatically download licenses, opened the file and when the dialog came up, I ran fairuse and tried to remove drm but got the 'you don't appear to be the licensed owner' message.
Help! Can someone step me through it. I've seen messages regarding people removing drm on Yahoo files. Note that an important distinction is that it works on Yahoo files I've purchased. I have some songs I bought on CD that a long time ago I ripped to poor quality. So I already own these songs. I'm just trying to get a better quality version.
On Rhapsody I can remove the DRM for songs I don't own. But not on Yahoo. Has anyone been able to remove DRM on songs they don't own downloaded from Yahoo?

Please do not ask questions about files you do not own. Read rule 6 carefully and the announcement at the top of this forum. You've been here long enough to know better.

Only thing preventing me from switching.
EDIT: Oops, my bad its just because of the IBX being 6234 that its not working.

Previous DRM removal programs (like drm2wmv and its frontends) won't work for Vista because Windows Media Player is now a Protected Process. The latest FU4WM seems to try and extract the keys directly from the IBX. Unfortunately Microsoft changed the IBX around, so it doesn't work any more, but if FU4WM is ever updated, it should work fine on Vista. Also FU4WM already writes its data file (blackbox-keys.txt) to My Documents instead of in its program folder, so that complies with Vista restrictions too.

How about if the DRM processor issues an invalid licence this has happened to me with a content service I use -on my entire library when I tried to restore my licneces after re-installing windows on my Desktop PC.
It took DRM Networks 2 weeks to restore my licences on their end and they basically had to reset my whole DRM count for my content provider. And DRM networks continues to give my content provider headaches like not enabling CD burning for some tracks within my content providers download manager but the tracks can be burnt in Windows Media Player it shows you how poorly designed Windows Media DRM really is .
FU4WM came up with the error of these files are not licensed to you during the time my licences where invalid .
So as soon as I got my licences restored I ran FU4WM on my entire library so I would not have DRM issues again ;).

Hi!
As an impartial observer to this thread (I'm not a music aficionado), I have to ask you two questions about your post:
1) How can you claim, or possibly think, that this part of the post by "consultant" is NOT a clear indication that he/she is talking about files that he/she doesn't own?On Rhapsody I can remove the DRM for songs I don't own. But not on Yahoo. Has anyone been able to remove DRM on songs they don't own downloaded from Yahoo?2) Do you really think it's a good idea to publicly challenge a warning to another poster by the moderator of this sub-forum? (I believe doing so is a violation of the rules of these forums)

The problem with FairUse4WM 1.3 is not the version of Media Player, since it no longer has to load Media Player to extract the keys. And you can't simply "roll back" the IBX - the clue is in the name Indivbox.key - it's a file that's individual to you and you alone. You can't replace it with someone else's or even with an older copy of your own, since the keys needed to decrypt your content won't be present (quite apart from which, attempting to roll back the IBX will trash your drmstore.hds and invalidate all your existing licenses, I tried it before).
Also, it's not a question of "not updating"... if your music provider forces an update on you, you have to accept it if you want to continue purchasing music from them.

the fact is, this works though. if you do what is in the zip file it works. part of the instructions include deleting the indivbox.key file along with others under All Users/DRM folder
It works, already tried it on fully 100% updated computers with the latest/final wmp11 installed , using the latest URGE service update as well.
I cannot speak for napster/yahoo/rhapsody, but this makes urge downloads convert flawlessly with fairuse4wm, and since ive done that ZIP file, there havent been any forced updates

was my mistake, it did roll it back properly, i wasent using 1.3fix. Still dosent work though :( i get the following error:

see, your version is still "11.0.6000.6342" which means you did something wrong. Here's what this fix does and this is why it works...
When you downgrade media player to the one in the zip file "11.0.5705.5043" and you reindividualize after deleting the DRM files under "AllUsers", the new "Indivbox.key" is individualized BASED ON your version of Windows Media Player, so the IBX is based on 11.0.5705, and not 11.0.6000...and since fairuse4wm can handle 5705 you are good to go.
::: milOtis
P.S. - The good thing about this fix is that it is not just a crack/patch, but a physical file downgrade meaning to couter this Microsoft would have to release an entirely new version of Media Player that installed in a different folder, and used a different DRM method other than IBX.

Newbie questions here, thanks in advance for your patience.
My interest is in burning a CD containing .wma files I bought and paid for (not rented) at the rate of $1 each from Yahoo!'s music service.
I'm keenly interested to know if this works, and admit to having only a very limited understanding of the technical aspects. To the extent I do understand this new "fix," it basically makes your computer think it's running an older version of Windows Media Player 11 -- an older version that still works fine with fairuse4wm1.3fix. But what is there that stops WMP from insisting on updating itself after running this fix?
And what risks am I running? Right now I can't burn a CD with this music, but I can at least still play it from my PC. If Microsoft does another tweak, how much risk am I at that suddenly I won't be able to play these files (whether with WMP or some other application) even from my PC?
Last set of related questions: Although I wasn't able to burn a CD from which these files were playable, I was able to sync them (using WMP) onto my Motorola MotoKRZR K1m phone, and they play just fine there. Although I'm grateful, I'm curious why these files will play from my cellphone but not from a CD. WMP appears to be doing some sort of fairly quick conversion as part of the sync'g -- .wma to .mp3? Is there some way to emulate that process for files I'm burning onto my CD? If I could do so without loss of quality, I wouldn't mind something extremely slow, like the "sound stream capturing" techniques and software I've seen mentioned here. Do those result in a loss of quality, or just bigger files? If the latter, does anyone have a good freeware or cheap recommendation for an app that does this?

Hey, as far as your wma files are concerned, I think it is best if you use the "sound capturing" techniques for copying your wma files to unprotected wma files or mp3 files. I use tunebite for music that I have legally bought in the past from URGE, and it works perfectly.
How it works it plays the song using WMP, but it records it on the fly at a super fast playing speed. You can choose to have it record straight to wma, ogg, or mp3. In theory, wma comes originally as a lossless format (or is it lossy), and I convert it to wma just to retain the fidelity. However, I suppose I could convert it straight to mp3 and save some disc space, but the audio quality will be slightly degraded (not like the average human ear can detect anyway). That is what I suggest you do.
As far as free alternatives, there are none that I know of. Maybe a google search will do you well, but I think tunebite is the best of them all hands down.

ok #1 - a log file is saved of updates, so no updates will be forced on you that have been undone by this downgrade, because the update log file is still intact.
#2 - risk? there is none, since the whole point of fairuse4wm is removing the protection so you can burn it, transfer it, convert it, do whatever u want with it. just use fairuse4wm to remove protection from your WMAs (rented or purchased) then once they are unprotected it doesn't matter what you do with them, they will always be unprotected.
to RDN98 - using tunebyte to conbvert songs is ridiculous, it takes like 30 seconds per song, where fairuse4wm is lossless, and does 150-200 songs per minute.

Yes I too use Tunebite to copy straight to Mp3 the songs I purchase from Yahoo or even iTunes. I bought the newest Bob Seger album and it works.
Also it works on Video files you Pay for on Cinema Now.
Tunebite is a bit slower than Fairuse4WM but who really cares. Use what works best for you. I never got the video files I purchased to work when I convert them to DvD with ConvertXtoDvD unless I use Tunebite to convert to a WMV file first. Tunebite was around way before this Fairuse4WM program and I've used both. The both have their ups and downs. So get them both and try them and see what works for you.

i CARE because you lose quality with tunebyte. it is recording only what the soundcard hears, and resaves the file to another format.
fairuse4wm is lossless.
i don't know why anyone would use tunebyte, fairuse4wm still works perfectly.

You're not going to get a higher-quality output by encoding to 320kb. To be quite honest, you're just wasting space. You can't get more out than what you put in (as my coach always says), and you're probably actually sacrificing quality by converting. By contrast, using FU4WM to convert keeps the file lossless (and probably loses a few kb by getting rid of the DRM). DRM wears down battery life, and is the cause of a million other problems, including cancer. But all kidding aside, if you want your files in mp3 format, either get them from eMusic, or use FU4WM on the protected WMAs and convert using a program like LAME. Remember that you aren't going to get anything you don't already have.

Yes, I know you will lose some details when using tunebite....all I'm saying is if you are getting IBX errors (or when the above file is deleted), then tunebite is a good alternative.
Don't get me wrong, I've been trying for days, if not weeks trying to find a fix to get fairuse4wm to work again, and I would use that over tunebite anyday.

Well, I downloaded this file and looked at the instructions and it seems pretty clear that this method won't work for music you already downloaded, since deleting the contents of the DRM folder will trash any existing licenses you have. So anyone who wants to do this, make sure you backed up or removed the DRM from all your existing music, including any that you ripped to protected WMA yourself.

I don't mean to be offensive or anything, but a lot of people seem to have trouble understanding "IBX Version 11.0.6000.6324 isn't supported yet". What part of this do you not understand? It means that it can't work with that version of the Individualized BlackBox DLL (the file that does the "donkey work" of Windows Media DRM) because it is newer than what the program supports. There is no magical way to make it work, and nobody other than viodentia or some other programmer can figure out what to change to make FU4WM able to extract the keys from it.
If you attempt to "roll back" your IBX version as has been suggested on here, even if it does work you will still lose any existing content licenses that you have.
The long and short of it is, people have to hope that their music provider does not force an updated IBX on them if they wish to continue removing DRM from their existing music.

well Windows Media Player , and URGE arent forcing any updates on me, and I've used it everyday since I did the rollback fix 7 days ago. FairUSe4WM still working like a charm, even using version 1.2 works.

Yes, you are correct. Sometimes it is best to rollback to older versions of the software instead of running the latest WMP version. It's not like you are missing much if you aren't using the final version anyway. :)

exactly, all i use windows media player for is downloading songs from URGE...regardless of the version of media player i am using, i STILL get the same quality audio files. i mean URGE is $10 a month for unlimited downloads, better than any other service.
once ive downloaded what i need from URGE through WMP, i just drop them into fairuse4wm, then itunes makes them into MP3s retaining all the ID tag info and even the album art.
I don't know why people are having so much trouble finidng a good workflow for getting DRM-free music
My Workflow: URGE --> FairUse4WM --> iTunes
(this gets you 192K quality MP3s)
From the moment I click to download a full album, to having DRM-free MP3 files, takes about 2 minutes. Yeah you can use Tunebyte but then it takes 30 minutes per album, and you lose quality. I can burn these files, convert the files, use them in video editing, do whatever I want at a fraction of the time...this is not difficult people.

As far as converting from wma to mp3 is concerned, are there other programs out there that will convert but retain the album art besides Itunes?
Only reason I'm asking is because Itunes is sort of like bloatware and it be nice if there were alternatives available.

milOtis: I don't think that's really what this program was intended for (see the first post). Please keep it legal for the rest of us.

rdn98: yes. dbPowerAMP seems to work great for me in converting files, but you'll need to pay extra for mp3 support. As I said, LAME should work for you, but if not, there are plenty of other options available. I agree with you that iTunes is bloatware though.

I bought (not rented) some movielink movies and am having difficulties converting them to a different format. The reason I want to convert them is that my portable media player (Cowon A2) has some difficulty playing the videos, even though they're DRM free, thanks to FairUse4WM. I would like to convert them to xvid/divx format. Any suggestions (besides tunebite)?

Thank you!
I've managed to keep from getting the updated IBX thus far, but it'll probably get pushed on me eventually.

But like I said, Megashares is pretty good. Instead of deleting the file with an email, like a lot of hosts do, they'll comply to the DMCA but only after a formal written letter with a bunch of forms and stuff.
Josh2,
I followed your instructions down to this one:
5. now go here, and click "upgrade"
http://services.wmdrm.windowsmedia.com/indivSite
When I got there, the upgrade button was disabled. So now I'm stuck... do you have any suggestions for me?
Thanks!
