I am running WM 10 and Fairuse4wm is no longer working for me. I tried following the instructions that were posted but no luck. I do not see WM as a running service. Was that step only for Wm11 users?

My question is, is there any way of removing DRM protection from a file you don't have a licence for?

A common misconception here seems to be that "people won't tell you how to do this because it goes against fair use". Although that is obviously a consideration, the main problem with it is, you NEED the license in order to be able to decrypt the file. If you don't have the license, you can't get the key to decrypt the file with.

and if i have installed the zune software previous to milOtis' fix, then i should be ok i presume.

does any one have a valid link to milotis's fix? I have tried to replace most of the wmplayer 11 rtm files with 11 beta 2 ones and fixed the registry version number settings (there are around 5 places where it stores the current version number) but every time I reindividualize it gives me ibx version 6000. i thought his fix avoids rolling back to version 10 and reinstalling the beta.

i also wrote a program to switch media player components, the dllcache files and the registry version numbers of wmplayer.exe, wmp.dll, and wmploc.dll if any1 is interested. So now i can easily switch from wmp 9 - 11 and anything in between. (7 doesn't work yet but i'm trying...)

Your path to the FairUse4WM.exe is invalid (you are using the default) You have to use the select button and point it to the correct location of the fairuse4wm.exe. FairUse Commander is only a front end tool that calls FairUse4WM.exe and does some file renaming.

You need to do the roll back. Check a few pages before for directions.

I have gotten the Napster 7 Day Free Trial and download over 1000 songs. I have WMP 10 and I am using fairuse4wm 1.2 fix and everytime I get the program open and then click ok and all that crap, it says pick an active licensed file and i go to one of my Napster songs and it says it doesnt have a license. What can I do???

That's because you don't have a licence! You have a trial of a service. You need a licence to UnDRM the tunes.

Enjoy listening to the 1,000 songs. While you are doing so, may I ask you to carefully read and understand rule 6 please?

I had WMP11......reinstalled WMP10(DO NOT DO THE UPDDATES)....

Played file,when asked for update......stopped...ran 4U..saved undrm'd file.......file now works in WMP10.....un patched.

This is a free download with DRM.......probably timebombed....but still....JIC you need to 'test' w/o screwing up anything.

I got a DRM Video Sample from ezdrm.com and i run fairuse and then it says close all windows media instances and i click ok and then it says find a drm file and i go to my sample video and then it opens in wmp and says do you want to open a page to get the license and i say yes and then it finds it and gives me the option to play or cancel, and i have played it and not played it and still fairuse just sits their aquiring licenses...help?

We'll...not for me. As I said I keep getting a message during decrypt that says it "requires a different key" then it fails to decrypt. Can someone point me to instructions on how to repair the FU4WM and WMP10 handshake or link or whatever? How do I get FU4WM to look for a new set of keys?

EDIT: NEVERMIND, I figured out how to force FU4WM 1.3 to recover a new set of keys..........:stupid: It now works with WMP10..:cool:


Could you tell me how to force it to recover the new Key.
I use 1.3 fix it still doesn't work for me.

If you don't have valid license, you're at the wrong place and need to contact the company where you bought your songs from. And you need to familiarize yourself with our forum rules, especially rule 12 and 6 or your stay here will be very shortlived.

I've purchased music from Yahoo! -- purchased, not rented, at the full $0.99/song rate -- and would like to remove the protection from those songs so I can back them up onto CDs or play them on my other networked computers.

I've actually been following this thread since late November. With due respect to the moderators (who I saw chew on the doctor who posted previously), this thread is now so incredibly cluttered, and filled with conflicting advice, that it's worse than useless -- it's downright confusing. Trying to follow all that conflicting advice has eaten up hours and hours of my time, and it's not done me a bit of good. It's just made me very, very frustrated. Could someone write a reply on this thread -- or, if the moderators think it appropriate, start a new thread -- with a detailed, from-scratch explanation of how to remove the protection (including links to such software, like FairUse4WM, as updated or patched, as is needed)? Please assume that your reader (like me) is starting with Windows Media Player 11.0, with all updates to it, fully installed.

oldshark1957, sorry I can't help fix this mess of a thread. Do note you can burn your purchased Yahoo! music to CD without any hacking. The license allows that. The songs will have no DRM after that. You can also play Yahoo! DRM music on multiple PCs... at least 3, if I remember. The license allows that, too. You'll need to login to Yahoo! Music on the other PCs and it'll load the license when it needs it.

Please assume that your reader (like me) is starting with Windows Media Player 11.0, with all updates to it, fully installed.

The problem is not one of patience, it's the simple fact that because of all the many different configurations of Windows PCs out there, the one-size-fits-all approach does not always work.

Since you have all the Windows Media Player updates installed, you would need to check if Yahoo Music will allow you to redownload songs, because the "roll-back" procedure that you would need to perform will destroy any existing DRM licenses you have (not just music but video too).

The reason why this roll-back procedure is needed is that the current version of FairUse4WM (1.3fix) does not support the latest version of Microsoft's "Individualized Black Box DLL" (referred to in this thread as "IBX" for short). This file is the critical system file which handles the encryption and decryption processes involved in Microsoft's DRM. A few forum posters here have discovered a method whereby they can obtain an older IBX by replacing certain Windows Media Player files with older versions. Unfortunately this seems to be a hit-and-miss process as not everyone has been able to get it to work. Also, because this file is individualized, you cannot simply download a copy of it from someone else, you have to obtain it via the proper individualization process which takes place on Microsoft's web site, otherwise it simply won't work at all.

I personally do not have any experience with the roll-back process since (so far at least) I haven't yet been forced to upgrade to Windows Media Player 11, and consequently I still have IBX version 11.0.5497.6285. If you wish to determine your own IBX version, you can follow these steps:

1. Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View tab.
2. Check "Show hidden files and folders".
3. Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files".
4. Load Windows Explorer.
5. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\DRM.
6. Right click Indivbox.key (may also be called Indiv001.key or Indiv002.key or something - pick the one with the highest number if so) and choose Properties.
7. Click the Version tab.

Your IBX version number will be displayed at the top. If it is 11.0.6000.6324 or higher then you will need to perform the roll-back process and hope it works for you. If not, then either FairUse4WM 1.3fix or FairUse4WM 1.3 should work for decrypting your files.

FairUse4WM itself is pretty self-explanatory... it is presented in a wizard style format and supports both dragging and dropping of files and also passing filenames on the command line. The first time you use it you will need to recover your DRM keys, but after that, unless for some reason your IBX gets upgraded or you have to reindividualize, it will remember them and go straight to the file chooser dialog.

hey guys, i have a strange problem. Fairuse4m normally works great here. I used it for *.wmv and *.wma files. But now, i got some kind of different .wmv file. The license for this movie isn't saved anymore; everytime i play this movie, the license is aquired again.

This has never happened before, normally the files are aquired once and then saved. With this "new" type of .wmv file, fairuse4wm says that there is no valid license found...

Yahoo!'s Jukebox is supposed to allow you to stream audio from the computer on which the purchased song was downloaded to another networked computer. But you have to disable the target computer's firewall, and even then I'm still getting the crippleware 30-second versions of the music used as teasers on Yahoo!'s website. When I emailed their customer service, the reply was prompt: I should turn up my volume or turn off my mute. Duh. One of those responses that leaves you wondering whether they're idiots or they just think I am. (Probably both.)

I had tried copying my downloaded .wma files to one of my networked computers and trying the roll-back procedure on it; heeding the FairUse4MW 1.3 warning, I had also downloaded one new song directly to that computer so it would have one working DMR license. But although the rolled-back WMP ver. 10 seemed to work fine, I still couldn't get FairUse4MW to work.

So I guess I'll sit tight and hope for a FairUse4MW ver. 1.4 someday. Thanks again for the time and effort you put into your reply -- I'm sure it will be very useful for other folks as well!

Actually I would expect that the reply you received was automated. That usually accounts for its seeming irrelevance to your problem.

what do you mean how did i get a license key? are you assuming i don't own the dvd? you should know for protected movies like this - if not music - you are given a license key to playback the movie for a period of time, just look up "terminator" and you will understand
