I found the fix in windows XP where rolling back your media player doesn't roll back your IBX version correctly. It all has to do with the C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallWMFDist11$ folder. If this folder does not contain an actual backup of an older version of the distributable, you can roll back until blue in the face but you won't get anywhere, because windows does not have the older files to roll back to, so you keep looping to the unsupported IBX. I have a zip of the C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallWMFDist11$ folder (around 4mb). If this is something you're interested in, PM me, unzip it to your own C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallWMFDist11$ folder, THEN rollback, and relax and enjoy the anti-DRM ride in XP :)

vsaltv: Interesting point. You think it's possible to trick the uninstaller into rolling back to an earlier ibx? It should be fairly easy to edit the spuninst.ini file to use a different ibx (or change the ibx itself), or do you think it hash checks? If not, then this should make the rollback process that much more painless for new users.

One thing though: I thought different ibx components don't work across computers. If you're able to send this and have it work on another computer, let me know. You could package just the required files, along with a much less complicated rollback procedure than the one we have now.

It's not as easy to just edit .ini files, it needs basically every file related to the media player or runtime that you are attempting to roll back to. The zip I created allows you to completely and correctly roll both the media player and the distributable all the way back to WMP9.

But what if you're running WMP 11.0.6 and want to roll back to 11.0.57? Is there a way to put the 11.0.57 files in the folder so that it will rollback to that? How exactly does the IBX tie into the rollback process. IIRC, rolling back from 11.0.6 to WMP10 still kept the 11.0.6 IBX.


(and yes, I know it isn't as easy as editing the INI, I was saying that we could trick it into reverting to the older IBX that was placed in the folder...or no... I'll do some more looking into it).

lilhobo: What is the error message you get? Sometimes it will just grant you a license to stream (not download), and that could be the problem.

I just let Yahoo Music Unlimited upgrade my version from 2.0.2.042 to 2.1.0.174 and now I have 11.0.6000.6324 and can't unDRM my files.

Did a system restore and that didn't help.

FairUse Did its job if you were tricked into these services/online stores.
Then there was a way to get your music drm free.
But by now you should know better even with the lawsuit dropped it looks like the creator won't be coming back anytime soon and as the digital music stores/services and microsoft continue to update their software FairUse will become more and more outdated when dealing with the updates.

cdeviney (and hicux): If you look at the other posts in the forum (look back a few pages), you will see that it /is/ possible to revert to FU4WM-friendly components, but simply using system restore or the built-in tools Microsoft gives you will not work (obviously).

You should still be able to use the newer version of Yahoo! Unlimited, as the rollback won't touch those components, however. If not, just be glad it lasted for as long as it did.

One thing you can try: play the file in WMP, and while it's playing, try to decrypt. That usually works for me.

WalterK: The ultimate goal, of course, is to get rid of the DRM completely, from end-to-end, but for now, the only way to get most mainstream music online is through a DRM-enabled store. I agree that non-DRM'd content should be purchased whenever available. It seems that Viodentia will not be coming back, (or Monkeyboy, for that matter...no one ever remembers him...), but until then, we can all gather round in a circle and sing Kumbaya.

When doing a properties on music in urge it says they are 129kbps so that's where I got my info. I was inside windows vista RC1 and using media player. i installed the urge thing just to see it. did not sign up. doing properties on music it says 129kbps. if when downloaded they are better then 128k that's cool then.

Anahita: When you download music from URGE, the tracks are encoded at 192 kbps WMA (protected). See earlier in the thread for how to decrypt on Vista.

Question: I want to do all of my FU4WM stuff on a Virtual Machine so that I don't have to worry about messing with my Windows Media Player files (it also allows easy backup of your entire subscription account/fles/keys, etc for multiple PCs). I'd like the VM drive image to be as small as possible, so I have a question:
Is FU4WM Windows XP-only? Can I install WMP10 beta on Windows 2000 or something with a smaller footprint and still use FU4WM?

I think it's interesting how much credit people give Viodentia. Not that he isn't the man for creating this, but he even says in his first post that FU4WM is just a GUI for DrmDbg. Sure the updates to the program foiled Microsoft's patches, but it's really the codebase from DrmDbg that made it all possible. Monkeyboy is responsible for the latest fix, enabling us to use 11.0.57 and before.

I wonder what "lark" is up to these days


P.S. I'm curious as to why the files in my %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\DRM folder are version 11.0.6 when my ibx is 11.0.57. What's the disconnect here?

CZroe it might work in windows 2000 but i am not sure.
It was listed as being Xp only.

Secondly you can install a small version of XP on a virtual machine say an image about 350mb or less.
How?
Simply use nlite (google search) and have your original windows installation CD, you can then pick and choose what will be taken from the orginal cd and windows updates to be put on the image.
After creating simply mount the image with daemon tools or burn to a cd and install on your virtual machine.

Note Nlite does not work with Win9X.

I'm not sure if this has been brought up yet, but after I installed Zune, my undrm'ing process wouldn't work (and this was caused because of Zune)... so I just uninstalled Zune, uninstalled WMP and everything else, then reinstalled WMP, no Zune this time, and it works... only thing is, I'd love to have Zune accessible so I can play music from my HDD on my X360... but if I have to use my iPod... that really doesn't bother me, just was wondering if there's a way around this.

Blind Melon: Many people have had problems with Zune and FU, but I am not one of them. Just so you know, Zune is basically WMP11 with a few tweaks. You can use the 360's streaming option from within WMP11.

I was using FairUse to remove DRM from many albums in my library when it stopped working after I updated my system. Now I would like to determine which files in my library are still protected with DRM. Does anyone know how to search for WMA files that are still under DRM?

schil: WMP can tell you which files are still protected. Go to the songs menu item in your library and enter "Protected:yes" (minus the quotes) in the search box. This will list all of your protected files.

Another way is to use FairUseCommander, a program that works with FairUse4WM to batch convert protected tracks. If the checkbox is selected, it will find for you and que up your protected files to be converted. It's quite handy.

If you want to know how to revert your system to be able to unDRM again (it's really simple), or just want a copy of FairUseCommander, drop me a private message.

Hi all, I got a little lost in such long thread. But if I got it right, I can't unDRM wmv file, which requires for playing KB891122 installed, am I right?

I`ve tried to install Wmp10 on a german Vista 32Bit with the instructions of CademiaX. Now WMP 10 runs on my vista (Ultimate). The problem with the error message #File wmploc.dll is version 10.xxx and not 11.xxx, which was expected....# disappeared after i double-clicked on unregmp2.exe under the Programme/Windows Media Player folder.
Now Wmp runs fine.
The problem now is, that i can`t do the upgrade on the windows media individualisation site . The Upgrade Button
is greyed out. So I can't play files with licenses.
Has anyone installed WMP10 on Vista successful.
Please Help

Try going back through and deleting your DRM files in the DRM folder... I had to do that sometimes to get the Upgrade button to work.

and Cademix - YES...I have spent countless hours trying to do wmp11b2 on vista...no dice, so wanted you to know I worked on it hard also, and came up with nothing. I finally actually got it instgalled, but right when I opened it, it would crash, so technically it was on there, but I was never able to keep it running more than 10 seconds.

not true. if you have windows XP you can use windows media player 11beta2 with URGE all you want without updating. I have three PCs right now with that setup. Everytime I open windows media player it says "do you want to update" i just hit no, and I'm still downloading DRM music from urge to this day.

also, i have windows vista instlaled with virtualpc, and have windows xp running in that, and urge is using 11.0.5703.x version of media player also. (beta 2)

It doesn't force you to update, it just asks all the time, you can just click 'no'.

I have some WM files and when I'll try to play them in WMP10 I got message box "You need security upgrade for playing this file..." or similar message and the link leads to KB891122. So there's no chance to use FairUse4WM for these files? Thanks.

Ren: I use URGE, and the security update it prompts you for doesn't upgrade your ibx. I'm not sure what service you use, but if it's not allowing you to play protected files, the worst you can do is try (remember to restart afterwards, though!). If it doesn't work, you can always use the rollback procedure gone over many times before (I just did it last night with 11.0.57, so I know it still works)

that means you have wmp10 on there before, so it upgraded it to the most current version of 11. if you have ANY version of 11 install, you can just go to urge.com and download urge, it will see you have version 11.x and not update it...it just need to be 11 for urge to install, so 11beta2 qualifies, you just have to have it installed prior to installing urge. if the urge installer sees version 10 it will update it to the most current version of wmp on the MS servers at the time of install (if it sees 11.x, it skips the upgrade).

i am talking about when you open windows media player, and it pops up after 10 or 20 seconds, in a dialog box that says "A Windows Media Player update is available. Do you want to update now? YES NO" then you must always click NO so WMP will never update (thus your IBX will never update) - keep in mind it is a domino effect...you cannot upgrade you WMP without updating your IBX...don't do it!! Using FairUse4WM only works with WMP11beta2, and prior and ONLY on XP...you cannot install anything lower than WMP11Final on Vista, don't even try. CademiaX and I have spent days and days trying to get that working for you guys, and it's not just one problem....MANY issues come up like conflicting DLL versions, bluescreens, WMP totally crashing after 5 seconds, etc...so you are out of luck with Vista unless you run VirtualPC or have a service that lets you get away with WMP10 and doesn't require 11 (but most require version11 now).

Remember the motto: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and if you have a working FairUse4WM and music service that doesn't require you to upgrade, then keep it taht way! If you are on windows xp, my "12-27 fix" will work just fine for you on rolling back to wmp11beta2... (used it on my friend's computer last week that was 100% updated to the latest wmp11) This has been tested on xp home, professional, 64bit, and on dells, gateways, acers, shuttles, even intel imacs, and it works on all of them...the people who are having trouble with my FairUse4WM fix is anyone on vista, or who use more than one WMA-file music service, like Urge and Napster to download songs, or Yahoo and Rhapsody and something else...due to conflicting DRM data, the rollback does not work for those people, and their upgrade button is grayed out on the individualization site. So pick a service you like and only use just that ONE.

I just rolled back my install last night. I use Zune, so I had to get rid of that as well, but I know the rollback still works. (if possible, don't use Beta 2, it's much slower than the final version, and there's really no need). If you can't find WMP 11.0.57, pm me.
