christopheramos, setarip is right, DVDSubEdit can't help you with that. In general, it will be pretty much impossible to remove these subtitles and recover the picture under them. Sometimes you can do that for a small logo, but what you describe, I'm afraid you'll have to live with it...

If you reencode the video (with VirtualDubMod or AviSynth) you can try to add the "delogo" filter. Works pretty well to remove a permanent logo like the "5" in your example.
It is theoretically possible to remove also the hardcoded subpics, but since those subpics are constantly changing, you cannot define them with enough precision. Therefore, the part of the image under the subpics will be very damaged. IMO, it's better and simpler to keep the subpics.

I try to change colors (and/or transparencies), then press "save modifications" (all as described in guide by CoNS on videohelp.com). If I open these files again with DVDSubedit, it shows me new (modified) colors, all seems OK. But both PowerDVD and standalone player shows old (initial) colors! What have I do wrong? ;)

Don't forget to "apply to all", or you will change only the colors of the current subpic.

Does DVDSubEdit show new colors on all subtitles, or just one? Are you sure you modified all the subtitle streams, or just one? Are you looking at the wrong subtitle stream in PowerDVD?

???? That's very strange. Can you describe how you changed the colors? Did you change the CLUT colors, or did you change the color assignment (i.e., change the CLUT tile used for a given pixel)?

Then select Edit > Apply last modifications to all and then File > Save all modifications. Result is old (unmodified) transparency and colors... I'm still :confused:

What's strange is that when you reload in DVDSubEdit, you get the right modified colors.
Oh wait. Do you have multiple DCSQTs in your subtitles? (look at the DCSQT selector, does it have multiple values)? That could be the explanation, if you only modify the first DCSQT, and it's followed by another one you don't modify, then you won't see the modification. The area at the bottom left will also show you how many DCSQTs you have in any given subpic...

Easy:
1) Select "All DCSQTs" in the DCSQT drop down selector
2) Make your changes to transparency/color
3) Apply to all.

That should do it...

P.S. It's normal to have 2 DCSQT, one to start the subtitle and one that simply stops displaying it. If that's what you have, it does not explain your problem. If you have more than 2, and more than 1 has a color or transparency assignment command, that could explain your problem.

There's 8 DCSQTs :) They continuously changes transparency from 0 to 9 and then to 0.

Maybe I dont't understand something, but I have no "All DCSQTs" position in drop list... Only "DCSQT 0" - "DCSQT 7"

This is a small update with a few bug fixes and a couple improvements.


Added display of timing in the subpic info.
Added ability to change the transparency or color in all DCSQT at the same time.
Fixed a crash that could happen when removing hearing impaired text.
Fixed a crash that could happen upon startup on Win ME and Win 98.
Added a quick fix for the startup crash problem. Put a line in your ini file with NoSize=1 to avoid resizing the window on startup (which causes a crash).
Fixed a problem in the timing info saved in .srt files, thanks mpucoder for the clarification.
Cleaned up the GUI.

Did you plan to include a direct command editor for sub commands in all DCSQTs? E.g. I want to remove "Stop" commands in some subtitles.

Well, I didn't really plan on doing that, it could be quite tricky. In the meantime, you can delay the Stop command until the next SPU, which will achieve almost the same result as removing it. Simply change the duration of the subpic to its maximum value...

I have a DVD (Wimbledon) with annoying feature of subtitles. Subtitles makes with "fade (in/out) effect" and most of it displaying with flash (fade-in - normal displaying - fade-out - none - very short flash). I think the "Stop" commands are reason of this flashing.

President, you can post a small snipped of your subs for us to look at. Save one of the streams as a .sup file and post that somewhere. I'll take a look at it. The stop command should not make it flash, there must be something else.
But you could also edit your VOB with VOBEdit yourself. You'd have to find the stop command (0x02 I think) and replace it with an "end of command" 0x0F I think, and see if that changes anything on that particular subtitle. A bit tedious, but OK for a test.

AFAIK there is no way to save a modified file with VobEdit, that part was never written.
But I, too, would like to see what makes it flash, probably a mistake in the sequence of commands used for fade out. Most likely the last DCSQT contains only a stop command and no CHG_COLCON, so the subpicture reverts to its original set of colors and contrast established by SET_COLOR and SET_CONTR. The terminate command is 0xFF

By reauthoring the sst stream with MuxMan, the result seems ok (with DVDSubEdit all of the pictures and the transparency levels are ok, apart the duration ---> should'n be two frames, i.e. 80 ms ?):

SD I think we're talking about two different problems here. I'm downloading the sup right now, but my guess is there are no stop commands and the sst file is wrong. The way it is written the subs should flash (on for one frame, off for one frame). Change the stop time to 00:00:00:00 and they will be compiled in either Scenarist or MuxMan (not sure about DVDPlanner on this) with no stop code.
But this is an ugly way to do a fade, only one bitmap is required with multiple DCSQT's using the CHG_COLCON command to change contrast - which, I believe, is the way Scenarist performs a fade if compiled as that effect. Note: sst does not support effects, only scp

Well, the point is that I did not find any means of translating the sup file into a working sst file because all of the available tools I tryed (subtitle format translators) are actually placing stop commands into the compiled output.

I also already tryed your suggestion - to set the end time of each SPU to 00:00:00:00, but the stop command after each picture is still there...

Anyway, the CHG_COLCON command is not used in the original asset (this is the reason the file is huge); I understand it is a bad practice of authoring, but it's here in the original asset, so it should be possible, with the same procedure, to "simulate" the fade effect using the sst format, right ?

My mistake (doing too many things at one time), duration of 00:00:00:00 in the mxp file removes the stop command. In an sst file you set the stop time to a minus sign, eg

.SST has a limited command set, so doing advanced DCSQT stuff really is a pain, since you're forced to work frame-by-frame.

DVDMaestro's .STL format is more comfortable to use, but I am unaware of any tool that would accurately translate your .SUP commands into $fade* and $wipe* .STL commands...

I didn't know that - good thing the rippers I use leave the files as read-only. (I just checked, and that is the reason none of my files get changed when I play with them in VobEdit)

I would use it for subtitling normal dialogue lines. If used with a light touch, i.e. 3-frame fadein + 5-frame fadeout, the effect looks professional and increases readability a little bit (IMHO). I do it in DVDMaestro now, but that authoring suite annoys me...mostly because I can't use my preferred workflow: SSA->MaestroSBT+VDub->MuxMan->DVDSubEdit.

It's definetely eye candy, but 99% of the DVDs I watch are subtitled, and I guess I've grown picky about things ;)

That's true, and that's the reason I thought President was facing some similar troubles with another title: it seems to me that the reauthoring using such type of sub assets can only be performed based on the vobs (i.e. with the integrated demuxer of muxman :) ) or based on the stream as is, straight demuxed in the sup format, and authored by applications supporting this compiled format.

No modification seems possible at all to the picture contents, apart by using DVDSubEdit, since, apparently, with this type of asset no program can make a valid sst from subs without stop commands.

Even with formats different from sst the problem of automatically decompiling such type of assets seems unsolved: tryed for example the usage of the very basic DVD SupTools (DVDSupDecode + DVDSupEncode), that fails too in this case...

Thank's jeanl and mpucoder. But... one thing. May be it's a not subtitles bug. Today I watch this movie on PowerDVD 6.0. All is Ok. Flashing appear in PowerDVD 7.0 only. Who is right? I don't know. Maybe you helps me. I can't uploading a big files like VOB. Maybe you can detect an error by .sup file only.

For remove a fade effect just choose "All DCSQTs" in DVDSubEdit and set it transparency (p, e1, e2) to max (15). Apply last modification to all. Save all modification. That's all. Fade was killed:-). Extremely fast operation:-).

And I don't see a problem with this, the last DCSQT sets the contrast to transparent and stops the display, so it looks like a bug in the software player.

Oops. I meant to write "3-frame fadein + 5-frame fadeout". DVDMaestro's GUI labels the Fade edit fields as "frms"... Somehow that made my wires cross, and it came out as "ms".
