Here's an update:
http://download.videohelp.com/DVDSubEdit/Downloads/DVDSubEdit1.4107.zip
It should fix alfixdvd's problem, and it allows selecting multiple lines in the OCR to erase them...
Give that a shot...

It should fix alfixdvd's problem

Bad news jeanl the problem of garbagge he persists in 1.4107 as in version 1.4106.
version 1.41 dont has the problem of DvdSubedit's window garbagge when open a sup file.
I think is a problem of "refresh" or "repaint" when closes dialog of load sup file, and brings dialog of load ifo file. it is then when it appears the black garbagge on the DvdSubedit window.

When opening a 'Full domain' I can only select VOB files, but when entering an ISO filename and press OK It does load it properly, so would it be possible to add at least '*.* all files' to the selection or '*.ISO'..
thanx..

????????? You can load an ISO with DVDSubEdit?! First I've heard!
Jeanl
EDIT: :D :D :D Indeed, it seems to "work"!!! This is clearly a bug! but it might be a useful one as it allows you to change the ISO (which is normally read-only) directly. There are problems though: of course, it won't find the IFOs, and all the colors will be wrong, also, I'm guessing it treats all the subpics found as belonging to the same VTS, combining all titles, all menus etc! This is a recipe for problems, but if you know what you're doing, you can probably get away with it.
So, my answer is, it's a bad idea to allow loading ISOs (because the program does not have the necessary safeguards), but I won't prevent it, for people who know what they're doing...

Bug, Feature, what's the difference anyway? :D :D :D
If you know what you're doing, then it's a feature, if you don't then it's a bug! Your pick! ::D

Amazing!! Would it be very difficult/time consuming to add such safeguards in case of loading an ISO?
jeanl

But why? There's a bunch of stuff wrong with opening an ISO, unless you can parse the filesystem. I don't even want to go there! But you have to admit it's of limited use...

ahh k.. I'll extract it then and change it, because that's exactly what was wrong, you can't change everything in one run because of the menu's etc.. but ofcourse it would be great if eventually it would be supported, as it seems you already are able to load about everything.. hehe.. and I'm clearly someone who doesn't know what he is doing, the only reason (at the moment) I use dvdsubedit for is adjusting the position of the subs in 2.35:1 movies so the subs are in the picture and not in the black bars (I have a projector and then having subs in the black bars is very annoying).. hehe...
jeanl
15th June 2008, 06:09
Well, instead of doing that on your ISO, you can just do that on the files, then burn them with ImgBurn in just one shot without the need to create an ISO. Selecting just the movie when you open an ISO is going to be very difficult, unless the VCIDs are unique, which might happen, but would be lucky.
I too have a projector and I too adjusts my subtitles to be where I like them to be. I"m guessing you're talking about movies that have already been letterboxed in a 4:3 format (I have seen that, it's horrible), in which case they put the subs in the black bars, but your projector can rescale the pic so it occupies an entire 16:9 screen so you need the subs inside the picture.
Anyway, I don't think I'll do anything on that anytime soon! :D :D

But why?
Obviously in cases where you have the DVD stored as an ISO on the HD, like I often have, it would save you the mounting, extracting and re-creation of the ISO.

A new question: I want to set new defaults for the Border, so I go and edit dvdsubedit.ini, but then I see the following:
Border4_3S_N=48
Border4_3S_P=58
Border4_3LB_N=60
Border4_3LB_P=72
Border4_3LBS_N=89
Border4_3LBS_P=106
Border1_85_N=10
Border1_85_P=12
Border2_39_N=62
Border2_39_P=74
What does the _N and _P stand for? (at the moment for the current movie I'm trying to move the subs the default seems to use the _P..
jeanl
3rd July 2008, 17:21
N stands for NTSC and P stands for PAL :) ... I guess I could have made that a bit clearer! Sorry about that! You must be in PAL land then...
Jeanl
SuperDre
3rd July 2008, 19:56
ah.. thanx.. and yes I'm in a PAL country, but it depends on the dvd (I've got PAL & NTSC).. great tool, I use it for positioning subs into the 'active' part, if only there were some dvd-players (or a firmwareupdate for the PS3) which can do it on the fly... thanx for the tool...
jeanl
3rd July 2008, 19:58
I fully agree with you! It would be very easy for a DVD player to do that on the fly, completely trivial! I don't know why they don't allow you to do that, but I guess it would be a bit of a UI problem, and probably not that very many people are interested in such a feature.

hi jeanl, i have a little problem using dvdsubedit
i add new subtitles to an existing DVD using muxman & vobblanker
but it seem the color gone weird & the position one the sub is out of range so when i play it in stand alone player i can't saw that sub
so i tried to change color & the position
for position i did it like this way :
open full domain - select ifo ( i select the vts_02_1.vob ) - adjust position in subpic vertical position - apply last modification to all - save all modification
then after fix the sub position with dvdsubedit, then i check with powerdvd when i press play button it goes straight to scene menu not play the movie instead, and in scene selection menu i tried to choose scene 1 , 2, 3, ..... but it keep in scene selection page , can't play the movie
i mean when we press play button it have to play movie
when we press scene button it have to go to scene selection menu, right ?
after doing with vobblanker have tried to play it with powerdvd it didn't have any problem everthing go smooth except for color & position sub
so sorry my english is not very good

Hi Tandi...
Tell me if I understand you correctly:
- The original DVD plays OK in PowerDVD before you make any changes with DVDSubEdit.
- After the change of color and position your make with DVDSubEdit, the DVD no longer plays normally (play movie goes to scene selection and scene selection never takes you to the movie).
Tandi, I suggest you start again from scratch, from the beginning. I can't think of anything that DVDSubEdit does that could cause this to happen. DVDSubEdit does not modify the navigation (it really can't!). I suspect something got corrupted in your IFOs, or your IFOs got out of sync with your VOBs, but I really don't think this has anything to do with DVDSubEdit...

i just tried over & over again , just after muxman
so have add the sub , only have main movie , didn't have any menu yet

Sometimes when I try to ocr subtitles, dvdsubedit mistakes 'I' for '['..
any ideas on what to try / change etc?
I usually end up editing the srt file manually but if I could prevent this, it would be more convenient.

Difficult to fix that and make it work for all fonts in all cases. That's one of the shortcomings of the OCR technique used in dvdsubedit (gocr). It's not so easy to fix problems like that without creating other problems with other fonts... Manually editing is the only viable solution I can see for now, sorry...

Version 1.5 of DVDSubEdit is now available here (http://www.videohelp.com/~DVDSubEdit/)...
There's an important bug fix having to do with moving subs by odd numbers of pixels, but the most important improvement is the preview with audio.
This is the change log since version 1.41.
Added support for real-time playback of video with audio and subtitles. There are two new buttons that can be used to play the video while displaying the subpictures. One plays the video normally, the other one loops around the current subpic. There is a drop down in the preferences for the frame-per-second adjustment, in case your machine is running out of cycles when playing video (which is possible because DVDSubEdit does not use the overlay buffer, and therefore consumes more cycle than a normal video playback engine).
Added support for VOB files larger than 1GB.
Added an option to only select subpics that are fully transparent.
Changed the behavior of the "Hide" button. Instead of making all pixels transparent, it assigns all pixels to "background".
Added better handling of non MPEG2 video (the video isn't displayed, which avoids crashing!).
Added an ini option (AutoForceDisplayVideo) to not automatically display the video when opening VOBs etc.
Finally fixed the problem of vertical moves by odd numbers of lines, by swapping the top and bottom fields when the top field ends up below the bottom field after a move. This should fix the problems with media player classic and other players.
Fixed a display problem that occurred when loading sup files with IFOs.
Fixed a bug that occurred in the OCR when subtitles were present at the top and at the bottom of the display, and one attempted to erase some characters at the bottom.
Fixed the wrong display of the number of MB scanned during the scanning of a VOB file.
Removed the "Not enough room for padding block" error (changed to a warning in the log since it's not crucial anyway).
When reloading from the MRU, the list of subpics is now updated as the reloading takes place.
Added better reporting of errors found in the subpic streams.
If the user aborts while a vob file is being analyzed, the vob is no longer put in the MRU.
Fixed a (very old) bug that could cause a subpic that had been moved down to cause a UI spillover when the background video wasn't displayed.
Fixed a problem that could occur when no CLUT was found (no IFO file for example).
Fixed cosmetic problems related to showing or hiding the background video.
Modified the way the subpic info is saved and loaded (for fast reloading of previously scanned DVDs). This simplifies the code and the file. As a result, the first time you run this version, none of your recently-used files will be available for fast-reload.
Fixed a bug in the "Save as sup file" function that prevented a new sup file from being created.
Added code to deal with a padding stream smack in the middle of our subpic data, as seen in DVDs created by ConvertXtoDVD.
Fixed a problem in the timecode display. The value didn't correspond to the time shown in a player if the PTS of the first VOBU wasn't close to 0.
Enjoy...

Thanks very much for the hard work Jean - especially on the preview.
A small feature request please? Maybe have a preference for always answer OK to switch to autoclut when editing BMP with external tool when 2 colours collide. It's just a bit of a pain to always answer yes (I suppose I could change to autoclut anyway).

Thank you very much for this new version of DVDSubEdit!
One minor "bug": You have forgotten to update the version
info in the VERSIONINFO section of the resource file (still 1.4/1,4,0,0).
I am not sure about the source code (dated 09-Sep-2008 18:27).
Is it version 1.5 or 1.4103?
VERSIONINFO shows 1.4, whereas VERS is defined as "...1.4103..."
And BTW in DVDSubEditSource.zip the file Resource.hm is missing.

Hi Jeanl,
We corresponded a few years back about the horizontal positioning of subs in DVDSubEdit at the time you were implementing that feature and back in beta-release days and I beta tested horizontal positioning for you.
DVDSubEdit has continued to be a most useful tool, many thanks for all your work on it.
Today I came accross what I think may be a bug, certainly it is an error somewhere of some kind.
I was testing the forced subtitles of 'The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King' DVD (opened full domain) of which there are just 3 in the 185 minute movie. I told DVDSubEdit to display only the forced subtitles of its single subtitle stream and I noted the time of all 3 so that I could check just the 3 forced subtitles were displayed correctly when viewing the movie.
The 3 starting points of the forced subtitles are:
01:15:56, 01:16:02, and 01:28:15.
The first 2, 01:15:56 and 01:16:02, were both correctly shown when playing the movie and at the time DVDSubEdit had said.
However the 3rd at 01:28:15 was the wrong scene, not the same frame that DVDSubEdit had shown which corresponded to 01:28:15 into the mivie, and no forced subtitle was displayed there. On further investigation I found that frame which was very near the end of the movie at 02:57:25 and sure enough at that point the frame that DVDSubEdit has shown to correspond with the forced subtitle appeared the correct forced subtitle was displayed.
It's no problem for me, all is working and the 3 forced subtitles are displayed during the movie playback at the correct time. However I thought you would like to know that for some reason DVDSubEdit said the 3rd of 3 forced subtitles should be displayed at 01:28:15 even though the frame shown by DVDSubEdit actually occurs at 02:57:25 as does the forced subtitle during movie playback.
There is a problem somewhere, I hope this rather long explaination helps you diagnose the problem.

mattstan

Thanks for this nice program. With the recent release I have discovered an issue.
If you open a .sup file without loading a IFO the screen is garbled.

Hello.
Thanks for the update of the program.
The below text seems to be redundant. Saving a second time in DVDSubEdit1.5 seems to have updated the IFO CLUT to the correct colors.
(I have a question.
I opened my DVD and made changes to first all subtitles (White) and then some subtitles (Blue).
Then I saved the project.
I checked the DVD and found the blue color to be wrong. I opened the DVD again and made changes. Then I saved the project. I opened the DVD again and checked the colors in WinDVD.
The color changes had not been implemented.
If I open them in DVDSubEdit again the right colors are there in the stream.
Is it possible to open a DVD and change things a second time?
The program doesn't seem to save the VOB changes. Only the ifos and since the ifos doesn't seem to update with the correct colors...
I should mention that the color blue is a new color that wasn't in the original CLUT.)
Thanks.

I am using the version 1.5 and when I Save selected subpics as .sup file the created file has the attribute of read only. If I try to open it with dvdsubedit it does not show any stream. Not warning of error is showed.
If I remove the attribute of read only everything works well.
What happens?

jeanl: I think my problem was ifo-related. This ifo had 3 VTS but the DVD (video vts) only had one. The subtitles in VTS 01 had the correct info from DVDSubEdit. VTS 02+03 (episodes 1+2) didn't. I just copied the colors of VTS 01 to 02+03 and it worked fine.
Now, I'm trying to find out about subtitles with different colors.
I'm doing some projects where I have one regular color for the dialog and another for the song subtitles.
The colors look like they should in MaestroSBT when I check the preview but when I make the SST and the bmps the colors change.
When I open the result in DVDSubEdit the subtitles are blue with a red outline.
The information about a different color is in the clut but how do I change the clut so that I don't have to edit the color of the song subtitle manually?
I think I have noticed that the second color combination is in the left pair of the clut. Is that correct? So if I change that for one subtitle and have the correct color on the right for the regular dialog, then save changes for all subtitles, will the two different subtitle styles have the correct color all through the subtitle stream?
It's really tedious to go through every subtitle you want to change colors to and then save that edit manually (Ctrl+v).
Any way to make this easier?
Or is it something I can "fix" in MaestroSBT? I tried many different settings for the 4 colors in that program but never managed to get the subtitles to look right without any color edits later.
Thanks.

Are you sure the problem is really related to sy and ey being odd?

18th February 2009, 20:17
Yes, the problem is when one is even and the other is odd. With both even or both odd, no problems. The garbage is only on TV using SAP and not appear in the DVDSubEdit preview.

mmm, do you see the problem with anything other than a DVD player? I.e., on a soft player on the computer?The problem is only on standalone players.
OK, then this is going to be hard. Did you see the problem with several standalone players? or just one? I can add the code just for you, but it's best if I can understand if I'm doing something not legit. I have never observed the problem and I'm using DVDSE daily to move my subpics...

Maybe it's the bug I had with my KISS player. When I've tried to locate the problem, I was convinced that it was related to the even moves, but we have never really fixed the bug. We have never checked the sy values.
jeanl
18th February 2009, 23:37
Well, if all you're doing is moving the subpic, both values should change in sync, so they should both be even or odd at the same time. I'm wondering how Mtz is getting one odd and one even after a modification if that wasn't the case in the original subpic...
Jeanl
Mtz
19th February 2009, 05:31
The subtitles are created with Subtitles Creator.
Edit:
as far as I can tell, standalone players will try to display the same number of fields (top and bottom) for a given subtitle.
When those are not equal (ey-sy=odd), it displays garbage (which is not really garbage, is the very first line of the subtitle)

Please be very very careful with subtitles generate with SC!!!
The bug you are observing depends on the fact that this application very easily generates subpictures out of spec.
The bug (whose solution is pending since long time) is known. See here for details on the matter:
