Announcing DVDSubEdit Version 1.51

DVDSubEdit is a great tool I cannot live without anymore.
I'm currently authoring a big personal project of mine that includes subtitles entirely created by me (705 individual subpics) using an Aegisub script converted to SUP using avs2bdnxml and BDSup2Sub.

I need all the subtitles to be horizontally aligned in the middle, some are not because I created them in Aegisub with left alignment so that they are justified (it's absolutely needed, otherwise it looks odd). This "block" of left justified text is supposed to be aligned in the middle of the video frame and that's where it's getting really tricky. Here is a picture that illustrates what I'm talking about:

Btw, it's impossible to do this in Aegisub/ASS in the first place, as soon as you want a subtitle to be left justified it sticks to the left border. (Well you can still place the whole text manually but that's not going to be perfectly centered and it's very time consuming...)

Aligning this horizontally would be so easy to do in DVDSubEdit after authoring, first "crop subpic background" and then align subpicture in the middle horizontally (automatically), then apply to all.
Would it be possible to add a function that horizontally aligns a subpicture? It's all a matter of DCSQT x-coordinates as far as I know. It's sort of a feature request. :)
I'm currently struggling there. SubRip allows to crop and align in the middle but it's a big pain the butt and I don't get it to work properly.

Thanks for the useful tips.
I have followed rOIZ suggestion and managed to select 'Gimp' as bitmap editing tool (see attachment 3). Now when I choose 'Edit subpic with external tool' 'Gimp' is launched but I get the message (see attachment 4):
<Opening of "/usr/bin/C:\users\utente\Temp\tempbitmap.bmp" has failed: cannot open '/usr/bin/C:\users\utente\Temp\tempbitmap.bmp' in read mode: non existing file or directory>
I hope my translation from Italian is correct.

I have added a field in the ini file that allows you to specify the directory used to store the temporary file. It's not in the preferences, so you have to open the .ini file itself and edit the field (after opening the app and closing it once). In your case, you'd change the line to:
TempBitmapDir=/tmp

or something like that. Send me a pm to test the change if you're still interested.

What would I be doing without DVDSubEdit? It has become vital for my authoring needs. One of my main uses is replacing blocky menu subpics with my own anti-aliased ones (well, as we're limited to 4 colors the anti-aliasing is not perfect but much better than none at all).

Don't most menus have antialiasing to begin with? I've see a lot of that... Do you know that if you press on 'b' , 'p', 'e1' or 'e2' (the actual letters on the UI), the corresponding pixels will be shown (and only them)? Can be useful to see which pixel is used for anti aliasing, background etc.

Some have anti-aliased menu subpics but I still see many that don't have it. Even the look of the subtitles of a feature is often very sub-par in my opinion and I'm talking about big budget Hollywood releases. Poor font and no PAR compensation and the most annoying issues to me.

But what I actually meant was I replace automatically generated menu subpics of my own authored DVDs with better "new" ones that I scaled in 24-bit before the conversion to a 4-bit bitmap, hence the quality improves, although technically there was some anti-aliasing in the original subpic (and because of that I don't even have to mess with the CLUT, all I need to do is import the new bitmap and save).

In my case it's like this: if you're creating a wide + PS (or LB) menu with DVDMaestro, you can only feed it one subpic (your high quality "wide" 4-bit subpic), but the PS or LB one it will create by itself from the wide one which will naturally give somewhat inferior quality on those automatically generated subpics. Those are the ones I replace after authoring with proper ones using DVDSubEdit, and without it I would have to live with crappy PS/LB menu subpics. :)

Yes, I know about that function to display individual pixels of a subpic by clicking on the CLUT's letters. Can be very useful.

After a while the image changes from widescreen to LB, and the palette changes to automatic IFO. When I try to use the IFO CLUT it say that there's no IFO associated with the VOB. It never happened before. The DVD was reauthored with muxman and the subtitles come from MaestroSBT, if this counts.

Why is this?

Done a bit of research and it seems that the movie has been shortened to 1 cell (PGC has 1 cell, the vobs are however intact). Therefore the "missing cells" behave as indicated.

I'll do some other tests today to see the exact sequence that produced this error. So far I could only notice that the processing of the freshly remuxed VOBs shorten the PGC.

I'll be more careful to remember the exact sequence. It happened to me twice, both after remuxing external subtitles with muxman and opening the vobs in DSE. All my tries today were successful ie no errors.

I've been working with a disc that has issues with navigation if you disable P-UOPs and try to skip ahead in some places.

Every step of the process I've been preventing software from stripping the P-UOPs, but using DVDSubEdit to edit colors and then saving it is stripping those codes anyway.

Is there an option to disable this? Is it a feature or bug?

Are you positive about this? I don't think there's code to remote the PUOPs in DVDSE! I'll have to double check...

I'm really sorry, I think the problem is elsewhere. I'm using VobBlanker first, and although Remove PUOP's are unchecked, it's still doing it.

It always worked fine, even on 8.1. Just before posting this, I actually used DVDSubEdit and closed it normally. After that, it just won't open again. Is it possible that some Windows component (NET Framework or sth) or something DVDSubEdit uses got corrupted and needs reinstalling?

You should try to remove that .ini file.
In windows7 it's here:
C:\Users\jeanl\AppData\Roaming\dbdsubedit.ini

Not sure where that would be in windows8. Remove it (along with all other dvdsubedit related files) and try again. If you're lucky, that will do it!

However, after working normally with it and closing it, it will not open again and crash. I delete the file(s) again and it works, but only once. Even if I just open and close it without working on any files, it will not open a second time unless a delete DVDSubEdit.ini. (leaving DVDSubEditLastFile0 there is not causing problems).

It's possible that the mere presence of this file is what causes the issue (even empty) as it's possible that the functgion call used to read it is no longer supported...

Thanks again. Some quick tests: it does open with an empty .ini file. Of course the file is rewritten and it crashes again the 2nd time. Setting the ini file as read-only does not work, still crashes with all entries present.

This worked though: I deleted MainWindowPos and ScanWindowPos and set the .ini file as read-only. Now DVDSubEdit always works. Settings are not saved of course but it's not a major problem and can be easily bypassed. :)

OK then there must be a problem with the call. At the very least, I can put a try/catch around the corresponding calls so it won't crash the app if they fail, but I'm puzzled as to what's causing the crash... These are pretty standard calls...

I had the same issue as Weirdo yesterday. DVDSubEdit worked a few months ago and it just stopped working. Only thing that I could think of that changed was I did a system restore 2 weeks ago. I also am a Windows 8.1 user. I did the same "fix" as Weirdo where I deleted the DVDSubEdit.ini and it worked. Then the second time I opened DVDSubEdit, it just wouldn't open. Event Viewer didn't show any good information.

I did a windows update and that fixed the issue. The update was KB3000850 which is an optional update. Not really sure what was in it, but it worked.

I want the subs visible when dvd zoomed in for widescreen, but would also like them bottom-justified, meaning a single line subtitle will be at the same height as the bottom line of a two-line subtitle. Is there a setting for this in Dvdsubedit? I seem to have adjusted the single-line height accidentally for another subtitle file.

edit: never mind, figured it out. Click "flush" and adjust the borders rather than just the subtitles.

Yes, that's correct. Flush is the way to do that, and it does exactly what you want... :)

I use DVDSubEdit just for detecting "forced subtitles" when backing up my DVDs (i.e. load ripped VOB into DVDSubEdit). It's very useful for the purpose. I recently upgraded to Windows 10, and one feature which doesn't seem to work for me now is that when I load a VOB into DVDSubEdit, the dropdown in the "Subpic selection" section never seems to have any options in it except for "All Streams". Previously I used to be able to select an individual subtitle stream/language here and then tick the "Only show forced subpics" checkbox in order to see which streams contained forced subtitles, if any.

Is there something I'm overlooking? Or is it related to Windows 10? Or is it just something peculiar to the last several VOBs that I've loaded?

For the dropdown to be enabled, IIRC, DVDSE has to read the IFO files that are associated with the VOB file. Normally it just looks for them in the same directory the VOBs are in. So there could be a few things happening:
- There's no IFO file in the dir of the VOB
- DVDSE is not able to locate the IFO for some reason that's related to windows10...

I don't have windows10 so I can't reproduce your problem.... I would check whether opening the main IFO (VIDEO_TS.ifo) instead of the VOB helps...

Thanks for the prompt reply, which has allowed me to solve my problem. The problem was not to do with Windows 10, but rather the fact that (coinciding with my move to Windows 10) I've been using a slightly different naming scheme for my VOB files recently - I've started including the PGC number in the filename, for my own reference (like this: VTS_01_PGC_06_1.VOB), but this seems to interfere with DVDSubEdit's ability to autodetect the IFO file in the same folder - I suppose that DVDSubEdit looks for an IFO file with the same name as the VOB file (the same, that is, other than the final number in the filename), but since my IFO filename doesn't include the PGC number, DVDSubEdit isn't making the association between the VOB and the IFO. I've just retried it without the PGC number in the VOB filename, and DVDSubEdit successfully detects the individual subtitle streams as before.
